A man has gone missing on the eve of his wedding. Is he dead or alive? While trying to solve that mystery, Jill must also track down the second compass stone with help from an old friend. And who has upset Winky this time?
This book was really flat for me. It took me longer than usual to finish this one because there just wasn't any part of it that was of any interest to me at all. I feel as if the series has fallen into a rut and this book is just an endless series of spinning wheels. The mysteries were boring. The whole gold fish saga and the endless hobbies of the temporary secretary were ridiculous and more frustrating than entertaining. I'm tired of the twins and their constant losing schemes to draw customers to Cuppy C. I don't even care if she ever finds all the stones. I've forgotten what the danger is, why she's looking for the stones, or what's supposed to happen to Florence if she doesn't find them. I hate to say it, but the kid is so obnoxious I don't even care that she might be in danger. I'm growing impatient with the lack of growth or maturity in the characters. Grandma, Jill and Florence are all the same character at different ages but all stuck at the same immature stage of development. I do like Bob. I hope he stays around.
Wanda, her goldfish, complains all the time and Jill has to keep buying things to stop the complaining rather than telling the goldfish (remember, she can talk to animals) either shut up or it's the toilet for her. The entire series has Jill being someone that others take advantage of.
One case is about a series of studio recordings that, upon playback, are severely messed up. She needs to find out who did that and why.
Then there's a book on famous witches that is coming out and Jill signs up (and we know where that will end up.)
There's neighbors with a brat kid that can do magic and does so in class in full violation of what magic users are not supposed to do. Then there are dogs that go missing but show up soon. Jill's saving of the Lido? Someone else claims credit. (Guess who.)
There's a crossword competition, a warning about ghouls at a music concert, a thieving teddy bear, a company moving out of the building her office is in and the situation about Braxmore gets worse when a potential ally backs out.
Overall Jill continues to allow herself to be used by others. Her grandmother continues to be as nasty as always. The only saving factor is how quickly Florence is developing her magical spell abilities.
As all of the books Adele Abbott writes in this series each are similar yet uniquely different as well. If you are looking for easy to read stories containing Similar storylines then this is exactly what you are looking for.
As the song says, "lets start at the very beginning...a very good place to start...
What could possibly happen next with Jill and company??? It seems that every time she solves a case someone gets very surprised and disappointed. So what's next? Onward to the next book.
This is a really good book by a very talented writer. The storyline kept me on my toes. I can't wait for the next book by this author. She is a very good and original storyteller! You won't be disappointed at all.
Twists turns and mysteries solved! Very good plots and solutions never a boring moment. Cats, dragons, unicorns and camels who knew they could be so interesting.
I still am not certain how this series stays readable but it does. I have to admit that I find the series entertaining. Where the series is going is anyone's guess but it should be an interesting read.
This is book 41 and it's filled with cute stories involving little Florence, plus several cases for Jill to solve. Winky remains a nuisance and Jill's ability to speak with animals continues to work against her. Pressing on to #42.
This series of books has been one of my pandemic lifesavers. Quirky, made me laugh, and temporarily lay aside the seriousness of tge current situation. Pure, wonderful escapism
I really like this series, but a few scenarios happen too often now and I struggled to finish this book as quickly as I usually do.
Jill is constantly being conned out of something, falling for the smallest trick, she lost something. Florence is quite the brat and getting quite annoying. The twins are becoming boring too, trying to exploit a dragon for money now... Grandma is just Grandma, she still rocks.. Some of the cases are still interesting, but I'm guessing the culprits too easily... I hope the next book improves as I would love to see her facing off with Ma Chivers...
