No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

The war in Vietnam didn’t kill Peter O’Keefe. Neither did his run-in with ruthless crime boss "Mr. Canada" in the Arizona desert. But chasing after justice in his own hometown just might.

A year after the private detective uncovered a criminal ring disguised as a mink farm in the Ozarks, O’Keefe is back home and back in trouble. A high school crush of O’Keefe’s turns up dead, but the details don’t add up. His pal, Mike Harrigan, has put his trust in the wrong people and now stands accused of crimes that could put him in the slammer. And O’Keefe? The mafia has put a price on his head.

In their search for the truth, O’Keefe and his team will have to venture into the criminal underworld of their city, each step forward bringing them closer to the edge. As trouble begins creeping closer to home, O’Keefe must decide if he’s willing to pay the cost of justice — before someone else makes the decision for him.

"...Flanigan manages to conjure deft, hard-boiled, but literary prose that’s reminiscent of Raymond Chandler’s best work. A gritty and eloquent crime novel." - Kirkus Reviews

Dan Flanigan is a novelist, playwright, poet, and practicing lawyer. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Rice University and J.D. from the University of Houston. He taught Jurisprudence at the University of Houston and American Legal History at the University of Virginia. His first published book was his Ph.D. dissertation, The Criminal Law of Slavery and Freedom, 1800-1868.

He moved on from academia to serve the civil rights cause as a school desegregation lawyer, followed by a long career as a finance attorney in private law practice. He became a name partner in the Polsinelli law firm in Kansas City, created its Financial Services practice, chaired its Real Estate & Financial Services Department for two decades, and established the firm’s New York City office and served as its managing partner until October 2022. View his legal bio at https://www.polsinelli.com/profession....

Taking a break from the law practice for two years in 1983-1985, he and his wife, Candy, founded Sierra Tucson, a prominent alcohol and drug treatment center located in Tucson, Arizona.

Recently, he has been able to turn his attention to his lifelong ambition—creative writing. In 2019 he released a literary trifecta including "Mink Eyes," the first in the Peter O’Keefe series, "Dewdrops," a collection of shorter fiction, and "Tenebrae: A Memoir of Love and Death."

"Tenebrae" is a bracelet of verse and prose poems dedicated to his wife, Candy, to honor her last illness and death and their 40-plus years together, a work that has been described as “celebratory” and “heartbreaking and exquisite.” It was a Finalist for both the 2022 IAN Book of the Year in Poetry and in the 2022 American Book Fest “Best Book” Award in the Legacy: Autobiography/Memoir category. The audiobook version will be released in 2026.

Dan’s novella, "Dewdrops," was originally written for the stage and enjoyed a successful full-cast staged reading at the Theatre of the Open Eye in New York. Its then well-known and regarded director John Cappellatti described the play as a “powerful” work about “addiction in America—addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex, danger, power, and to finding the Answer,” with characters that are “well drawn, real, and actors love to portray them.” The short story collection comprised of "Dewdrops," "On the Last Frontier" and "Some Cold War Blues" was a Finalist in the 2022 Independent Author Network Book of the Year for Short Story Collection and a 2022 American Book Fest “Best Book” Award Finalist in Fiction-Short Story.

In 2025, Dan published a second edition of "Dewdrops" to include a new story, "Dude." As an Editor’s Pick, Book Life called it “a short story collection that’s as heartbreaking, raw, and real as it is beautiful and tender” and said “Flanigan’s prose is melodic and hypnotizing, jarring and chaotic, exploring the human condition through a series of tense, often melancholic tales that still capture the imagination with their reality, sweetness, and sadness.” Writer's Digest said it more simply, "The writing is truly flawless." "Dewdrops" was a 2025 Global Book Awards Gold Medalist.

"The Big Tilt," the second book in the Peter O’Keefe series, was published in 2020 and has been described as “deft, hard-boiled, but literary prose that’s reminiscent of Raymond Chandler’s best work.” "The Big Tilt" won the 2022 National Indie Excellence Award for Crime Fiction and was a Finalist for the 2022 Independent Author Network’s Book of the Year in Thriller/Suspense. In 2023, "The Big Tilt" was a Legacy Fiction finalist for the prestigious Eric Hoffer Award as well as making the 2023 Eric Hoffer Book Award Grand Prize Short List.

"On Lonesome Roads," published in 2022, is the third book in the series and was a Notable 100 Book in the 2022 Shelf Unbound Best Indie Book Competition and 2023 IPPY Silver Medalist in the Best Mystery/Thriller eBook category. Most notably, "On Lonesome Roads" followed up "The Big Tilt’s" 2022 NIEA Cri

A completely successful thriller – further adventures of Peter O’Keefe, PI

Author Dan Flanigan is a novelist, poet, and playwright, and screenwriter. His debut novel was MINK EYES, the initial volume of this Peter O’Keefe series. He now continues that excellent series with THE BIG TILT as volume 2. His other publications include TENEBRAE (poems) and DEWDROPS (short stories). Dan practices law and divides his time among Los Angeles, Kansas City and New York City.

The author has an extraordinary flair for creating memorable characters and for placing them in credible settings that proliferate into situations that morph into surprises. His main character, Peter O’Keefe, grows more visual when he enters after a telling first chapter that provides a prelude to the tale. Chapter 2 - ‘Just as dusk was fading into night on a Saturday, the phone had rung. ‘That must be her.’ Picking up the phone, O’Keefe said, “You?” “Yeah, me,” Sara Slade said in a low voice, just above a whisper. “And they just took her in. I think the house is full of them, just waiting for it.” “On my way,” O’Keefe said…in less than five minutes he had climbed into Sara’s car, switched on the portable phone he had temporarily installed in it, and called the direct line to the Missing Persons Division…After five rings, someone answered. “This is Peter O’Keefe, Who’s this?” “Sergeant Briggs.” “Maybe you know my name. I’m a private investigator. I’ve been working with Morrison on a lost girl. She’s in immediate danger of gang rape or worse…’ Tension is established and the episode begins.

This continuation of the life of Peter O’Keefe is well distilled in the author’s synopsis – ‘: The war in Vietnam didn’t kill Peter O’Keefe. As trouble begins creeping closer to home, O’Keefe must decide if he’s willing to pay the cost of justice — before someone else makes the decision for him.’

And that is the barest outline of the thrilling venture this book reveals. Dan Flanigan has proven his gifts as a poet and short story composer and author of two plays, and his second novel focuses a spotlight on his important position as a significant contemporary literary figure. Highly recommended.

Apparently Flanigan is writing a series about his trusty detective, Peter O'Keefeq, one for every year after 1986. Judging by the damage he receives each book so far he is going to be an interesting case whenever this stops. Leaving that aside, this is a thriller set in 1987, but with only the odd example, the time is not terribly relevant. The story has at least three threads, and these are put together quite well, although to start with I felt that the lack of connectivity, while it might truly represent life of a private investigator, that does not necessarily mean it will be appropriate for a story. They do come together, but the ending then becomes, in my opinion, a little forced.
The writing is clear and easy to read, the characters plausible and well drawn, the descriptions good, except for the part where our hero is always running out of cash. If the book is going to include an economic aspect, the characters should not go on as if it were not there apart from the occasional moan. They should be doing something about it, and it should be explicit. Otherwise, leave this out. The author has a law degree, and this has made the court case scene work well. Overall, a good effort.

As the second book in Dan Flanigan’s Peter O’Keefe series, The Big Tilt tells of Peter O’Keefe’s adventure in the Ozarks as he tries to uncover a criminal ring that’s operating as a mink farm. During his investigation, sinister things start to occur, including the murder of O’Keefe’s high school crush. He also finds that his former friend has made some questionable choices that put his life in danger. Along the way, O’Keefe must also watch out for the mafia who is angry at how he has jailed some of its members. Will he bring the culprits to justice or will they destroy him first?

If you enjoy thrillers or mysteries, definitely check this story out. Not only is it filled with memorable characters, but plenty of shocking plot twists that will make putting the book down hard to do. At 308 pages, it’s somewhat of a long read, but that shouldn’t deter you from enjoying this captivating novel.

Author Dan Flanigan writes about contemporary
themes. Set in 1987, “The Big Tilt” is the second installment in the Peter O'Keefe Series.
This work of fiction unfolds during a financial
crisis going on at that time and shows how it affected everyone. O'Keefe has fought in the Vietnam War and survived, but he is now back in trouble since the mafia has put a price on his head, though I will not spoil why.
This thriller has it all: suspense, revenge,
fantasy, among other condiments and Flanigan has made great use of his writing skills to pick florous vocabulary items and simple grammar to develop this solid story. He has resorted to the third person singular to tell this story and he has included pieces of dialogues among the lines.
Even though this is the sequel of Mink Eyes,
readers would be perfectly able to follow this narrative along if they read it as a standalone.
The twenty nine chapters that make up this
book seemed like 5 pages to me, it is fast-paced and entertaining. Great one!

An unputdownable novel

This is an enticing reading that will hold your attention throughout story. “The Big Tilt” is the second part of the Peter O´Keefe collection written by Dan Flanigan.
After going through difficult situations, Peter O´Keefe is alive and faces another tough situation that puts him in danger. He is on the spotlight but needs to find who is chasing him. Will he catch this person?
This novel is well-written and very intriguing. From the very beginning, I was immersed in the plot. I wanted to know everything about the main character and his “chasers”. This was possible because of the way each character was developed and the way their own stories were told. I mean, the plot was so interesting and unpredictable that I could not put it down. Of course, there were some turns and twists that make this book very compelling. For these reasons I thoroughly recommend it to readers.

The Big Tilt" by Dan Flanigan is a gripping detective novel that thrusts readers into a world where justice comes at a high cost. Set against the backdrop of Vietnam and the Arizona desert, the protagonist, Peter O'Keefe, finds himself entangled in a web of crime and danger.

Flanigan's narrative is relentless, blending the aftermath of the Vietnam War with O'Keefe's run-in with the ruthless crime boss "Mr. Canada" in the Arizona desert. However, it's back in O'Keefe's hometown where the real trouble begins, a year after his uncovering of a criminal ring in the Ozarks disguised as a mink farm.

The novel takes an intriguing turn when a high school crush of O'Keefe's is found dead under mysterious circumstances. The details surrounding her death don't add up, setting the stage for a thrilling investigation. As O'Keefe delves deeper into the case, his friend Mike Harrigan becomes entangled with the wrong people, facing accusations that could lead to imprisonment.

The stakes rise dramatically when the mafia puts a price on O'Keefe's head, adding an extra layer of suspense to the narrative. The author skillfully weaves together a tale of crime, justice, and personal redemption. Each step forward in the search for truth brings O'Keefe and his team closer to the edge, creating a palpable tension that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

Flanigan's characters are well-developed, and O'Keefe's determination to uncover the truth, even at great personal risk, adds depth to the story. The exploration of the criminal underworld in their city adds layers of complexity, making "The Big Tilt" a thrilling ride through a gritty and dangerous landscape.

In conclusion, "The Big Tilt" is a pulse-pounding detective novel that combines elements of crime, suspense, and personal sacrifice. Dan Flanigan delivers a compelling narrative that keeps readers hooked until the very end, making it a must-read for those who enjoy a gritty and immersive journey through the darker sides of justice.

“The Big Tilt” is a novel of suspense and mystery that has as its main character a private detective and Vietnam veteran called Peter O´Keefe, who is back home from an adventure in the Ozarks (book 1 in this series). In this second book, author Dan Flanigan sets the story in 1987, when the savings and loan crisis put the financial foundations of the national economy in danger. In that context, detective O’Keefe is in the eyes of the mafia, while his high school crush appears dead and his mate Mike Harrigan is accused of imprisonable crimes. Peter O'Keefe should face those trials in his own city while keeping himself steady.
One of the qualities of Flanigan´s novels is that they are cunningly plotted, and so is this one. There is never a dull moment; it kept me intrigued the whole time.
Moreover, the characterization here is exceptional. The mystery-detective O'Keefe is a kind of modern hero that makes every reader empathize with him and his emotional battles.
The book is exciting and action-packed, and I couldn´t stop reading it. So, I recommend it to everyone who likes the mystery and thriller genre.

The Big Tilt
4/5

I enjoyed the story. There were quite a few moving pieces, but not too many to keep track of. Additionally, there is a connection between the various threads that helped keep the score card understandable. The inter-tangled plots are fun to follow.
There were a few things that could have been better. The characters are a bit too theatrical. By that, I mean they are too stylized as a particular type of person. I have no experience with many areas the story delves into, such as interviewing for a job as a pole dancer, or how a drug dealer would react to the overdose. But I was suspicious of many of those depictions. And part of that is due to the inaccuracy of an area that I am familiar with.
There were some serious failing in the depiction of firearms. Those inaccuracies colored my view of the authors authority on those areas I wasn’t familiar with.
Despite those failings, I enjoyed the story enough that I’d likely read other books in the series if I have the time.

American novelist, poet, playwright, and practicing lawyer Dan Flanigan is the writer of “The Big Tilt”. This incredible novel is the second book in the Peter O'Keefe Series. This story is set in the year 1987, at a time when the nation was going through a crisis that threatened the financial underpinnings of the national economy.
Everyone was going through hard times and Peter O'Keefe was not the exception. O´ Keefe´s life takes an unexpected turn when an old friend turns up dead. The details of his death do not match but he is determined to find the culprit. Could he do it or will it be too late?
The truth is that I loved this thriller. The characters are very well developed, in general the scenes are very well described and the world building is fantastic and original. The author is very careful when choosing vocabulary and this is noticeable throughout his work. I definitely plan to read the entire series.

What a ride! “The Big Tilt” is a book written by Dan Flanigan. Part thriller and part drama, this novel is amazing down to the last page thanks to the author’s ability to maintain the suspense during the book.

The book relates the story of Peter O’keefe, who works as a private detective, but he is in real trouble when he discovers a criminal network disguised as a farm. Moreover, his highschool love is murdered and his friend is accused of committing a crime. How will Peter solve these situations?

This book contains two-hundred and thirty-two pages divided in chapters. All of them are really exciting and a rollercoaster of action so I can’t choose my favourite one. While I was reading the novel, I grew more and more compelled with the story.

Personally, I think that this book is perfect for action fans who like to be sitting at the edge of their seat, wanting to find out who is the culprit. I highly recommend it!

Author Dan Flanigan continues entertaining and captivating his readerS in this second volume of the Peter O’Keefe series. ‘The Big Tilt’ is a thrilling novel that combines suspense, action and mystery.

Private detective O’Keefe’s life is at risk as the mafia wants him dead. As if this wasn’t enough, O’keefe’s highschool crush appears dead. Along with his team, Peter joins a dangerous world to solve this crime and to serve his purpose: justice.

The vocabulary that the author uses to describe the action scenes are so accurate that you can feel you are part of the adventure. The language is not complex which makes this amazing book an easy read, not to mention that the plot itself is truly absorbing.

If you haven’t read the first part of this series, you will be able to fully enjoy this one anyway. Yet, as a Dan Flanigan’s follower, I highly recommend both of his books.

“The Big Tilt” is the second book following the story of P.I. Peter O’Keefe. First of all, I would like to point out that the description the author makes about O’Keefe helps the reader picture this main character as if we were seeing it. I liked how we see both sides of him, one part more vulnerable showing his struggles in his life and on the opposite side we have this relentless detective striving for information to help him solve the case.

In this novel, we are going to see at the same time as him, how he is being hunt by the mafia. O’Keefe is trying to make sense of the death of a former crush from high school and saving his best friend who happens to be a lawyer pushed into some sketchy situations. These three scenarios will keep you entertained from the start, wondering how far Peter will go in order to help everyone and managed to keep himself alive.

A dazzling financial thriller
The Big Tilt is the second book of the saga. This saga puts Peter O’Keefe as a main character which, at first, it’s difficult to understand and to relate to.
As you follow his adventures, as you discover what this character has been through, he turns impossible to dislike.
The situations the character encounters are not ordinary. For these reasons, readers need to pay attention to the details, settings and everything that is cleverly described and included in the book.
The Mafia wants O’Keefe’s head. In order to save himself and his pals, he has to go to the darkest, unimaginable places. Will he be able to prove the mafia wrong?
This book is perfect for thrillers followers. With its only 200 pages, this book will leave any reader with a thirst for more.

The big tilt was written by Dan Flanagan, poet, playwrite, novelist and lawyer. The author created very good and believable characters making it easy to empathise with. They are fully developed and very well portrayed.
Moreover, the plot for the story is very good and caught my attention from the first pages to the last. I enjoyed the whole book and I did not find any part that was boring. In fact, I read some of them at the edge of my seat. The author did a great job here.
This is the second book in a series that shares the name with the protagonist: Peter O’Keefe. As I enjoyed this one very much I would be glad to read the rest of the books in the series. I surely recommend reading The Big Tilt.

I enjoyed this novel very much. I liked the choice of aesthetics for every chapter and also the choice of the cover because it immediately invited me to read the book.
The characters and events portrayed by the author were very good; characters were complex and completely developed and the description of events and places greatly accomplished. Also, dialogues were accurate to real life, so it was like reading what someone actually said.
I found the pace a little slow in some parts, so I believe that the book could have been shorter. But, anyways, it is a very good novel with well rounded characters. I recommend reading it.
