Kelly Turnbull, the hero of PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC, INDIAN COUNTRY, WILDFIRE, and COLLAPSE, is back this fifth novel that tells the story of how America split apart into red and blue. Brought back to the United States to work with an elite group of operators who are seeking to stop the slide to open civil war, Turnbull pursues a leftist terrorist mastermind who will stop at nothing to burn down the country. His odyssey takes him from an attack on Capitol Hill to the “liberated zone” of Minneapolis to a desperate battle in the California desert. Turnbull is once again locked and loaded, with his trusty Wilson Combat .45 and his trademark bad attitude. With action and snarky humor aplenty, CRISIS is torn from the headlines and provides a powerful warning about where the trends we are seeing today could lead our country.
Kurt Schlichter is a trial lawyer, and a retired Army infantry colonel with a degree from the Army War College who writes twice a week as a Senior Columnist for Townhall.com. His new novel "People's Republic" is now available!
Kurt was personally recruited by Andrew Breitbart in 2009 to write for Big Hollywood. He is often on the air as a news source, an on-screen commentator, and as a guest on nationally syndicated radio programs discussing political, military and legal issues, including Fox News, HLN, CNN (Well, maybe not anymore), the Hugh Hewitt Show, the Dennis Miller Show, Geraldo, the Greg Garrison Show, the John Phillips Show, the Tony Katz Radio Spectacular, PJTV's The Conversation, The Delivery with Jimmie Bise, Jr., the Snark Factor, and WMAL's Mornings on the Mall with Larry O'Connor, among others.
He appears weekly on the Cam and Company Show with his own brand of caring conservative cultural commentary.
His previous book "Conservative Insurgency: The Struggle to Take America Back 2009-2041" was released in 2014 from Post Tree Press
As a stand-up comic for several years, he has gathered a large and devoted following in the world of social media for his amusing and often biting conservative commentary. He is an active user of Twitter (@KurtSchlichter) with over 71,000 followers, which led to his #1 selling Amazon "Political Humor" ebooks "I Am a Conservative: Uncensored, Undiluted and Absolutely Un-PC," "I Am a Liberal: A Conservative's Guide to Dealing With Nature's Most Irritating Mistake," "Fetch My Latte: Sharing Feelings With Stupid People," and "50 Shades of Liberal."
Kurt is also a successful trial lawyer based in the Los Angeles area representing companies and individuals in matters ranging from routine business cases to confidential Hollywood and entertainment industry disputes and transactions. A member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, which recognizes attorneys who have won verdicts in excess of $1 million, his litigation strategy and legal analysis articles regularly run in such legal publications such as the Los Angeles Daily Journal and California Lawyer.
Kurt is a 1994 graduate of Loyola Law School, where he was a law review editor. He majored in Communications and Political Science as an undergraduate at the University of California, San Diego, where he also edited the conservative student paper California Review while writing a regular column in the student humor paper the Koala. He also drank a lot of Coors.
Kurt rose to the rank of Army infantry colonel on active duty and in the California Army National Guard. He wears the silver "jump wings" of a qualified paratrooper and commanded the elite 1st Squadron, 18th Cavalry Regiment. A veteran of both the Persian Gulf War and Operation Enduring Freedom (Kosovo), as well as the Los Angeles riots, the Northridge earthquake and the 2007 San Diego fires mobilizations, he is a graduate of the Army's Combined Arms Staff Service School, the Command and General Staff College, and the United States Army War College, where he received a master of Strategic Studies degree.
He loves military history, red meat and the Second Amendment. His favorite caliber is .45.
Chronologically first in the series, but I now see why the author recommends for it to be read later on. After the satire-heavy Wildfire, the change in tone is striking. This one is unrelentingly dark and more plausible now than when it was written. After reading Crisis, it's impossible to keep accusing the author of "wishful thinking" as there's zero doubt it's only a tale of dire warning.
That said, with the knowledge that the series ends with the country coming back together, it's a fairly enjoyable read. The pacing, characterization and action are all solid. As an author myself, I appreciate watching Kurt's writing skills improve with every new entry. Moving on to The Split next since this one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.
I shelved it under dystopia on GR because it's "The US Gone Bad" premise, but the beats and style are more those of a military/political thriller. Fans of both genres will find it worthy of their time.
I’ve read all of the Colonel’s books a s enjoyed them all, as I enjoyed this one, even if the degree to which they are becoming a plausible prediction of the near-future diminishes the enjoyability somewhat.
Another fun romp through dystopian America with Kelly Turnbull - the proverbial bull in a china shop as America falls apart. Like the Star Wars saga nothing is sequential so this one is more of a pre-prequel while incorporating some of the most recent events of 2020 into the story which require a certain degree of suspension of belief on the part of the reader. As always the author pulls no punches (as his podcast declares) and has a lot of fun with our current crop of liberal loonies. It will be interesting to see where he goes in Book 6.
The previous books in this series were set in America after it had split into Red (conservative) and Blue (progressive) countries. The books are funny and entertaining but also meant as a precautionary tale and are therefore kind of sad. The setting for Crisis is current time and just before the split happens. There are many tongue in cheek references to current politicians and celebrities, but my favorite was about Larry the Cable Guy as a militia leader.
Action-packed and paradoxically funny and damn scary at the same time
Yet another exciting and action-packed novel in retired U.S. Army Colonel Kurt Schlichter’s Kelly Turnbull series, this time a prequel detailing then-CPT Turnbull’s initial recruitment from OCONUS to CONUS ops as well as the details leading to the (fictitious) Balkanisation of the (dis)United States of America. The running gags on Politically Correct terminology running amok are darkly funny but at the same time paradoxically scary & depressing as they ring way too true to life.
Crisis, though being the fifth installment of the Kelly Turnbull Series, is a prequel. All the other Turnbull novels take place after the current U.S. (yes, the one we now live in) has split into two countries due to the ever-increasing inability of the Right and Left to have any kind of civil discourse.
Crisis is a story of the death throes of our great nation and a description of the birth of The People's Republic (composed of what are today's blue states- basically the East and West Coasts along with the Northern Rust Belt states) and the new USA (composed of the red states with Dallas as the capital).
Kelly Turnbull begins the story as an army special operator hunting jihadis in Iraq until he is drafted into an ultra-secret assassin/special action team by those in the deep state still loyal to the U.S. Constitution. At this point Kelly doesn't really give a hoot about Left or Right - he's just pro-USA and does his work because he wants to keep the country in one piece. His missions include interdicting an Antifa - Iranian fund raiser, trying to forestall a false flag massacre in DC and taking command of a cavalry troop in the opening battle of the civil war in Southern California.
The previous books in this series were a bit more fun to read as they were set in a more distant future and the dangers seemed smaller and more remote. Now the corruption of leftist politicians and their comrades in the media and deep state, while written about in this book as fiction, are more and more factual and in your face. Colonel Schlichter who wrote this one during the pandemic and after the George Floyd riots explains in the introduction that he was often tempted to stop writing and just transcribe what was happening into the novel.
Still, Crisis has all the action, humor (and surprise cameos) of the other Turnbull novels. I think Col. Schlichter had a lot of fun adapting the combat scenes from the movie Zulu to the modern warfare he has taking place in Southern California - right down to the bugler having trouble sounding the call for the troops to change fighting positions! I certainly had fun reading it and identifying the references.
And Kelly's internal dialogue is always good for a chuckle or two:
It was raining, but luckily it was not cold enough for snow. Turnbull offered a silent prayer of thanks for global warming as he pulled off the interstate on North Franklin Street in Cuba, Missouri.
Plus it's always good too see beloved political and cultural celebrities in bizarre situations. For instance:
“I was just in the can and it smelled like death and then Eric Swalwell comes walking out of a stall,” Casey Warner said. “Nasty.”
or
Ten feet away, Lindsey Graham was grappling with a rioter and pulling his hair. Nearby, the elderly Senator Richard Blumenthal was being held and punched in the gut by a couple of Black Bloc types as he pleaded his leftist credentials. “That’s no way to treat a war hero,” Avery sneered as she directed Lou to capture the melee on tape. She caught a glimpse of Rand Paul, who had apparently decided he was never again going to come out second best in a fist fight, judo flipping a fat Antifa-type onto the stone floor. One thing she did not see was cops. There were none.
Enough said. If you enjoy military thrillers and/or political commentary read this book.
It should be twice the length. I finished way (even with laughing out loud at the realistic portrayals of contemporary public figures) sooner then I wanted. All of the series is excellent and the scary part is that each book is very well written and entertaining, the first book seemed more parody then reality. By the time I finished Crisis, each book became more believable as a possible future especially after the chaos of 2020 in major urban areas. Well done Colonel. Again.
Eye Opening Fiction seemingly destined to Non-Fiction
Kurt's writing brings into focus the insanity, bigotry, hatred and disgust the Liberals have for America and Normalcy. The corruption of liberal politicians & their comrades in the media and deep state, while written about in this book as fiction, continues to be more and more factual. Great Series of Books that I highly recommend to all.
A prequel to the entire series, this book is an improvement over the previous book which would be the final chronological book of the series. I enjoyed the cat and mouse game of tracking down the brutally written leftist revolutionaries who had managed to steal a nuclear warhead from a US Air Force base before they could detonate it in St. Louis, killing congressmen and political talking heads from all sides during a negotiation over dividing the United States into two countries. There were many more references to topical public figures, meaning this book won't age well over time, but it's pretty good in our current zeitgeist.
My couple issues with the book is the old school line formation battle in California that Turnbull led Alamo-style seemed a little out of place and detracted a bit from the main plot of the missing nuke; the scene just didn't seem to fit the tonality and flow of the rest of the book. The resolution to the stolen nuclear weapon plot also seemed like a bit of a cop-out, but I kind of saw it coming.
I will also say, that of all the books currently out (7), I do think this one has the coolest cover art.
Kurt Schlichter has been pumping out one book a year in his Kelly Turnbull series for the last five years, but he seems uncertain as to how to deal with the Wuhan Flu pandemic and the 2020 election. As a result, he punted and wrote a prequel for this instalment, published in November 2020. The snark is still 5 stars, but it is otherwise a competent, but relatively generic, blend of political thriller and mil-fic. It lacks anything that really advances on enriches the plot or story-line.
Hopefully, by the 2021 instalment Schlichter will have found his lost cojones and be more comfortable writing something like, "Yeah, it is now apparent the Chinese Communist Party unleashed a bio-weapon on the world and Fauci funded it" or be ready to break his literary silence about one of the the hinkiest elections ever. He isn't nearly as enjoyable when he is ducking the issues.
If you are Turnbull fan you will love this book too. Kind of like the Star Wars are Pulp Fiction, this book is a prequel. Choosing a side becomes paramount.
Not unlike Robert E. Lee, he too didn’t want to see the Union broken, but was a Virginian first, an American second. Booker T. Washington warned us of those in a society of men that are perpetually aggrieved. Their aim being chaos and community.
Which would you choose? An enduring Constitutional Republic, warts and all, based on personal liberty, by and for the people? Or a governance whose goal is to satisfy the passions and grievances of the moment? How’s the latter working out in our contemporary times? The author sets the table for the next book.
This is my 3 rd Kelly Turnbull book and I'm now hooked. When I started reading these books I thought they were a funny, albeit violent, parody of the body politic of America. That time was during the Biden Administration. Two attempted Presidential Candidate assassinations and the murder of Charlie Kirk later, Kurt's dystopian vision of America and the battle between traditional liberal conservatism and whatever the Democratic party labels their worldview at this point, (? fanatical Islamo-communist socialism ? ), doesn't seem so wildly over the top.
I thought his plot in Crisis was imaginative and its resolution, non-resolution, clever. I'm looking forward to see where he thinks, or hopes, this conflict will come to an end or be resolved.
Having read the series in the order written, I wondered if this book should be read as the first in the series. But strangely enough, parts of the story line are happening real-time as I read. Though it is a fictional story, many of the incidents that take place in the books seem to be at least partly real in 2021. If the reader is a conservative, believes in the Constitution as it was written, or open minded, reading this series should give pause for thought; don't be afraid of what is written, be prepared and listen carefully to alternative news sources. Enjoy!
I could not put this book down. If I did not need to sleep or keep a job I would never have stopped reading this book. The story grips you from page one and you finish looking at the last page thinking ... I Need to have more!!! I do not want to live in that country as describes, but sometimes I feel for just a moment we are headed that way. God save us from that. The story is fast paced and very riveting. I know this is number 5 in the publish order, but sure reads like it should be number 1. If Mr. Schlichter keeps writing...... I will keep reading. Recommend!
Arguably the 2nd best in the series, running neck and neck with Indian Country, behind People's Republic. Schlichter actually gets writerly with his initial description of the reporter looking like a newly divorced woman going to her Georgia church.
The resentful members of the 1% and the most ambitious amongst the state media and Senate form the top of the enemies list, with the rank and file members of the groups that burned many of the country's cities last summer used as cannon fodder. Neat description of the battle of the LA storm channel. A little over the top at the St. Louis arch.
I gave this a rating of 5 for a Couple of reasons. I think this is the best of the Kelly Turnbull series. Turnbull is just as tough and funny as ever, but it's the story that rings so true. If Americans don't do something soon, something like this may just happen. I also liked the realistic way that the leftists in the story were building straw men propaganda tools, using the press as a political weapon, just like 'real life'! Great job Kurt!
While reading this book a story came on the news about a "scientist" that identified as binary and his pronouns were "they and them". I almost fell out of my chair! That was the first time I had heard of anyone use those terms outside books. Guess I love a sheltered life and will continue to do so. I'm worried if any of this transpires I'm in a very blue area. Oh well guess I've got to stock up on ammunition. :(
Far too close for comfort, yet too engaging to put down
Once again, Schlichter creates a Kelly Turnbull adventure that hits painfully close to home. As he states, these are fiction, but some seem determined to make them fact.
I was sucked in and held their this entire book, and am watching for The Split, the next one.
If I were going to review this book solely on book 1 it would have been a 2 Star review but once I started reading book 2 it got much better. The book 2 is where all of the action took place. Good storyline once you get pass book 1 craziness. If you like military thrillers take a shot and read this one.
Excellent. Best Turnbull yet. This is a prequel to his prior four novels about a post-split America; liberals having turned the East and West Coasts into the People’s Republic with the center remaining the United States. Schlichter is witty and occasionally hilarious, as one would expect from his political commentary. All in all a very entertaining work. Looking forward to the next one, which is already underway.
I purchased the entire series after reading a sample of the first book. While the Author wrote these as a warning, the liberals in our Republic have greatly ignored it.
The books are very close to prophesy as thought "leaders" ignore common sense answers to our problems. Get a jump start on how the left thinks, and buy these books. Uncanny.
A couple of the battles seemed to be lifted from Gettysburg the movie and Zulu the movie. Not believable in the 21sr century. Main character is a cardboard, too tough stereotype. Better if the author would have rounded him out a bit more and made him more human and less a “superhero”
It's always fun to watch the prigs who deem themselves our betters mocked as the perverse, corrupt, incompetent nitwits they are. The Kelly Trumbull novels achieve this admirable goal with flair and wit. Even better the stories are full of action. Well worth the read.
This prequel to the earlier books in the Kelly Turnbull series is less over the top than the others, but that lets the reader get into the (in some ways disturbingly plausible) story of domestic terrorism mixed with rumblings of impending civil war. As prequels go, this one does a pretty good job of building the world the reader has presumably read about in the four earlier books.
The scary part of these novels is the satirical and unserious parts are barely satirical.
I would much rather rate this 4.5 stars, rounded up because I enjoyed the story a lot.
All of these books seem to have random typos, little irritating mistakes like “Chevy Tundra”, and various passages that need to be read multiple times.
I just finished book 5. “Ripped from the headlines” is applicable and Kurt Schlichter makes it manifest. I love all the dark humor and it’s instructive to extrapolate the possible trajectories of some of our more odious politicians and public figures. Like the author, I pray that this series will not be our future reality.
A funny take on some dark tidings. I really enjoyed the beginning, but found that the middle part to be a little bit slow. Maybe this is because I lack knowledge of the geography of southern California. Overall, it was very readable, and I liked that we got to see more of Clay Deeds.
Awesome! I could not put this book down! I’ll be waiting for Book 6, The Split. As a 25-year US Army veteran (including time in the special operations community) I could tell that it was written by a fellow combat veteran.
I strongly recommend the entire series. Do yourself a favor and seek out his Townhall columns as well. Schlicter is a smart conservative voice that is needed right now.
I’m no book critic but I love to read and I know what what I love to read and Kurt I’d the very top of my list. I’m really looking forward to the next installment
