Proper Scandals #3

A Proper Scoundrel

Rate this book
As the successful owner of multiple railroad lines, Diana Barton is all too accustomed to fending off suitors seeking to stake their claim on her wealth. In order to keep the wolves at bay, Diana has contrived the perfect plan: appeal to the most notorious rake in London, the Baron Lord Bryant, to ruin her reputation and scare off the worst of the time wasters. The ruse will be no hardship—she’s secretly been fascinated by the man for years.

Lord Bryant is well aware of his questionable reputation. Indeed, he has cultivated the image carefully, and the last thing he wants is a wife. But when he’s approached by the younger sister of a business associate, he tells her in no uncertain terms that he cannot help. However, when he sees for himself what she is up against, Bryant grudgingly offers his assistance. Faced with his most complicated entanglement yet, Bryant is firm in his conditions—and Diana knows that to get romantically involved with Bryant would spell certain heartbreak. But as the counterfeit couple grow ever closer, the line between truth and lies becomes blurred, threatening both Lord Bryant’s well-laid plans and the future of Diana’s railroad business.

**********Major warning**********
Continue reading this review at your own peril. Extreme gushing ahead!!!

Hee Hee! I just couldn't resist forewarning everyone that I am in LOVE with this book and you're going to hear so much gushiness if you read my review. I was highlighting soooo much while reading that I think there are only a couple words throughout the WHOLE book that ISN'T highlighted. *blushing* That's how good this one is! It has reached the status of "highlighted every scene" and is "unputdownable!!!"

Not only is it deserving of ALL THE STARS but it is getting ALL THE HEARTS as well! *insert me with heart eyes* I am #TeamLordBryant all the way!!! Who is with me? Edward has nothing on Lord Bryant *shrugs* Just sayin'!

In all seriousness (well as much seriousness as I can give it because...hello, I'm gushing), I adored these characters. Diana and Lord Bryant. But I also adored so many more characters in this book. Such a great cast of characters. I loved the support that they gave to each other.

We see one side of Lord Bryant in the first book, A Proper Scandal. And now we get to see another side of him. And I'm telling you, this side will just blow you away. I'm giggling thinking back to several scenes with him. He has a tender side that you won't want to miss reading about. I promise. One scene might include something to do with tea, fairytales, voices and a rocking chair. Hee Hee! You probably won't guess it until you read it and then you'll be smiling thinking, "ohhhhh, that's what she meant."

I've gushed a lot about Lord Bryant but I would be remiss if I didn't talk about how much I loved Diana's character. The opening scenes of this book show her frustrations and struggles in trying to run the railroad companies and finding a lot of resistance from gentleman. Her solution had me grinning from ear to ear. And admittedly at one point, I felt the ache she had and her desperation that possibly led to a tear or two sneaking out of my eye. She is a spitfire and had me laughing at her quick wit and determination to succeed, even if a few little white lies to protect her were said. *giggling* And the moment she is caught in her deception...*even more giggling and some sighing.*

I really just want to tell you everything about this book! But I can't spoil the enjoyment that I felt while reading it for you. This is one of my favorite reads of the year. Which is saying something because honestly, I have read a lot of great books already. I think we should have a readers' retreat just to sit and talk and laugh and sigh over this book.

Now please excuse me while I go pick up my copy (my paperback copy came in the mail today *commence happy dance and squeals*) and I am beyond excited to read it again and again and again and again and, etc. If you haven't already guessed it, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!!!

Content: Clean. Some kisses and nothing further.

I received an ARC from the author but I purchased my own physical copy. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

YYYYUUUUUUUMMMMMM!!!!! That was so good!! And the cover! Geezzz. It was better then chocolate cake with raspberry cream and whipped chocolate ganache top. Esther how do you do it! I was giggling and sighing and feeling sad all in one hour of reading. I loved Diana! She was quirky and fun. Lord Bryant was dark and brooding and lovely! I hated putting this book down, I wanted to read it in one sitting. The writing just flows so well, their is a good plot, good movement and good characters. The way Hatch writes is just my cup of tea. I loved everything about this. This is on my reread over and over list:}

“You are in the business of helping women get what they want. I’ve come to get what I want.” His chest expanded. “And what is that?” Her impish smile softened into a wide, open, serious expression.
“You.”

Enjoyed this! A victorian romance with a strong female lead, and a tortured hero who is determined to steer clear of anything remotely resembling love. Esther Hatch is a new author for me, and I was pleasantly surprised by the writing. The story was well done, even though the realities of running a railroad line during that time probably would have been a bit too much for any twenty-two year old regardless of whether they were male or female, but it was an interesting premise. I was engaged in the story from start to finish. The romance was quick to start with a steamy kiss, but was a slow burn after that and pretty tame as romances go. But still very enjoyable. I will definitely read more of her books.

Wow. Just wow. This book was a masterpiece of storytelling and needs to come with a warning not to start reading it if there is anything that could possibly interrupt you (including sleep!) because you will not want to put this one down!! Diana Barton needs someone to scare away her unwanted suitors and who better than Lord Bryant, London society’s resident scandal maker?

The plot is absolutely captivating as Lord Bryant’s past is slowly unveiled and Diana realizes he is not the kind of man he wants everyone to think he is. The chemistry between them is off the charts (though everything is kept sweet and clean). Some standout side characters round out the story and I really hope this is not the end of the Proper series! And the epilogue (insert sigh here) could not be any more perfect.

5+ fantastically amazing stars for this must-read Victorian romance. Esther Hatch has solidified herself as the master of this genre!

I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.

Loved this!

I bought this book based on the cover alone. I absolutely loved it! A perfect Regency with such a wonderful hero and heroine. The witty banter between Everton and Diana is delightful. I can’t wait to read more by this author.

I am officially deceased. This is Esther’s best work thus far. I knew I would love it but I didn’t know how much I would absolutely adore Lord Bryant’s story. It is safe to say that I am obsessed.

This is one of those books that you just can’t decide if you should take your sweet time soaking it all up or just go ahead and binge it because you have no self control.

I had no self control.

Esther has created such dynamic characters with amazing chemistry. Lord Bryant’s back story was well crafted and gives you all the feels for a man who puts on a facade for the world he lives in. Diana is such a strong woman in her time, running a business...not taking no for an answer and honestly these two are written in such a way it’s hard to imagine them belonging to anyone but each other.

This book has it all....an amazing plot, CHEMISTRY....are we even a bit surprised that Esther writes the best kissing scenes that are completely swoon worthy by now?....great characters (I loved the Nate reprisal) and everything in between.

One of my favorite books of the year. ♥️

I love how unconventional Diana and Lord Bryant are! She proves herself a capable businesswoman, appreciating the opportunity to help her brother and her friend when they are overwhelmed with other aspects of life. She has such a great personality, and hits the perfect balance of being attracted to Lord Bryant while also not letting it go to her head. Lord Bryant is a complex character, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about him as his layers unfolded during the story. He and Diana have such a fun rapport with each other, she always catching him off guard with the unexpected, and him keeping her on her toes with his flirtatious banter. He is surprisingly vulnerable and torn up about his past, and as Diana comes to know his true personality, she can see for herself the gentleman he really is behind the facade. The pace of the book is a bit quicker than steady as various plot elements interweave and disrupt each other. I was in for a few happy twists and the ending just made me sigh with happiness. Highly recommend!!!

Lord Bryant is perhaps one of my all-time favorite book boyfriends; he is a beautiful sort of broken and his story of redemption just sucked me right into the pages. I loved the plot, the pacing, and those perfect kissing scenes. Oh my. If you don't know, go read this book now. #TeamLordBryant

A Proper Scoundrel is the first book I've read by Esther Hatch but it won't be my last. The romance is delightfully entertaining. Hatch offers a Victorian romance with contemporary ideals. Realistic? Not sure but it worked for me. These amazing characters drive the plot. Lord Bryant is my favorite kind of hero, charming yet wounded. He has a good heart but doesn't want anyone to know it. Diana's character is just as perfect as Lord Bryant. I love how smart and determined she is. Both of the scenes in his study are so good! The one at the end is so tender it nearly brought tears to my eyes. If you love wholesome romance this is a must read!

What a pure refreshing delightful read. I enjoyed how the author had readers feel a wide range of emotions for this story and her characters. I liked laughing out loud a time or two. I was fascinated by this woman who felt she had no other choice but to do something daring, something that would have society talking about her for years to come. But Diana Barton musters up her courage and heads off to the house of the only one she knows could help her navigate these shark infested waters she found herself swimming in. Baron Lord Bryant, his reputation as a scoundrel could be used to her advantage to fight off all the man that wanted to marry her; oh, not for love but to get their hands on her railroad business.

I was captivated and educated all at the same time as I watched Diana Barton run her families railroad line and that of her friends. Diana is a smart, serious businesswoman trail blazing her way through a male dominated world. I like how she kept the main thing the main through as she sought Lord Bryant’s help. Both characters are strong and vulnerable but not letting the other know of their weaknesses.

I adored seeing these characters transform over the course of this story. The romantic situations in this story are precious as readers try and figure out who is fooling whom? The dialogue between Diana and Lord Bryant sparkles with witty exchanges, full of warmth and humor; giving the reader a peek into the charms and complexities of the Regency Era. This is a great summer read and one that will work well for your next book club pick. This is the first novel I have read by this author it won’t be the last.

We have a clean, historical romance with fun dialogue and deep characters based on the fake dating trope.

Diana is trying to run a railroad business but men pretending to be investors keep wooing her for her money and wasting her time. She asks a man with a rakish reputation to ruin her reputation so these guys will leave her in peace. Of course they develop feelings for each other; that’s what we’re here for.

The banter and dialogue between all the characters is witty and intelligent. There is very little of the miscommunication trope—if an understanding does arise, one of them seeks quickly to resolve it. While they have obstacles to overcome, the level of maturity is refreshing.

I noticed that this is the third book in the series. I discovered that the main characters here are minor characters in the other books. It is not necessary to have read any of the other books. I read this because I needed “something sexy on the cover” but I didn’t want smutty, and this worked out well.

Language: Clean
Sexual Content: None
Violence/Gore: A couple instances of punching someone

My daughter and I received and ARC of this wonderful book. It was fun to find out more about Lord Bryant and why he is the way he is. We laughed a lot together while reading. I had to work one evening and my daughter read to me for three hours because we didn't want to stop whenever we came to the end of another chapter.

Oh, my goodness! This was so good. The main character was such a brave and intelligent woman for the era. I loved the fun conversations and antics between the two main characters (and props to some of the supporting characters) in this story. I laughed out loud at the surprise towards the end of the book. This really was a fun and romantic book!

OH. MY. GOSH. Ladies get your fans ready and keep them handy because Lord Bryant is to-die-for. As comedian Leanne Morgan would say "He's so yummy". WARNING: do not start this book if you don't have at least a couple of hours to yourself. You might as well go ahead and have your hubby order pizza for dinner because you're not going to want to stop reading to cook dinner.

Diana Barton is trying to run two railroad lines. Trying being the operative word. As all the eligible men in London and even some that aren't eligible keep stopping by her office keeping her from the important tasks she needs to do. If she were engaged or even being courted by someone that might keep the pesky men away, wouldn't it? Enter Lord Bryant, a notorious rake, who's reputation precedes him wherever he goes. If he would pretend to court Diana, she could get some work done. And that's how the fake courtship of Diana and Lord Bryant started.

Put me firmly in the #TeamLordBryant and #LordBryantPlease group. Sometimes people are not what others think they are, or what they've led people to believe they are. Lord Bryant is definitely one of those people. He doesn't care about his reputation in Society or what the Ton think of him which works to his advantage.

I loved Diana. She was trying to help a friend who's husband had died and all the men in London wanted to do was court her so upon their marriage they would have control of her business. Diana was smarter than that and hatched her own plan to outsmart them. She just didn't count on falling for Lord Bryant, but how could she resist?

This book deserves more than 5 stars and all the heart eyes. The chemistry between the main characters is palpable, and the banter and dialogue between is them fantastic. The side characters are also great, and there's an epilogue!! I love epilogues in romance books. I've never highlighted a book so much before--I had to restrain myself. LOL. This is definitely a must-read if you haven't already do so. You won't regret it. This is a great addition to the Proper series.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications but also bought my own digital copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed in my review are my own.

What's the longest you've waited for a book?

My paperback arrived a few days before the official release date - and I'm SO GLAD it did. I love this book. LOVE. IT. I read this before it went to print. I read this when it was a PDF, sent to me in the dead of night, in secret, by Esther Hatch herself. (Maybe I'm overdramatizing just a little. But hey. I did read it before most people. *evil laugh*)

I have wanted Lord Bryant's story since the first time he appeared on the page. There was something about him that intrigued me. "A scoundrel?" I thought. "No, no. There's more to this one. I can feel it."

Thank goodness I was right. Esther has written another masterpiece full of swoon-worthy scenes, delectable kisses, and heart-breaking moments. I laughed out loud (literally) at the witty banter between Bryan and Diana (she's a firecracker!), and I cheered for them the whole way through.

I printed this document out, y'all. Hundreds of pages worth of ink and paper. Then I sat in my beloved chair and read, page after page, stacking them until the read pile was bigger than unread. Getting to the end. Sighing happily.

READ this book. I love everything Esther writes. But this is my new favorite.

Stick out your pinky finger and flip the pages for a properly delightful romance! I could not put it down. It was the sweetest of romances for my favorite scoundrel.

Miss Diana Barton is tired of men trying to propose marriage while she’s working on railroad business. Her solution? Ruin her reputation and who better than with the rakish Baron Bryant. But Lord Bryant is not at all what she expected and maybe there’s more to his story than meets the eye. Although, what meets the eye is pretty nice too! #wink

Just the right amount of swoon for a sweet romance. Author Esther Hatch does an amazing job of building up the tension and bringing the two leads together in a satisfying and endearing way. I loved the business-minded, capable, strong heroine! This book exceeded all my high expectations.

only first chapter already made me admire the lead character - diana, who takes care of railroad companies. she can't get rid of these men who invade her office every day whole day to get her to marry them for reason to just to get lead of companies. diana is tired of this so she got idea - going to the most famous rake in the city with ask to ruin her. but diana didn't expect to lord bryant to have secrets too

i absolutely loved relationship dynamic between diana and everton. even from the beginning it was clear that they are already comfortable in their companies and it just got better and better with every their conversation. so many funny, sweet and too cute moments.

I absolutely loved this book!! I have been waiting for Lord Bryant's book since I read the first one. My mom and I read this together. I read aloud for three hours just so we could finish it. Every single chapter made me laugh. I loved how Diana wasn't afraid to be herself. She wasn't ashamed of who she was. I loved how we finally got to know the mysterious Lord Bryant. Knowing his past helped you understand him. While I loved him before this book. I love him even more now. I loved the interactions between them and how they didn't care a wit for what anyone thought of them.

This book was truly amazing. Of all the books in this series, this may just be my favorite. It was captivating from beginning to end!

I loved seeing the real Lord Bryant in this story, and how he was not the man London believed him to be. It was nice to see that there was more to him than met the eye.

I also really enjoyed watching the relationship between Diana and Lord Bryant grow. I was so excited for them to be together and it made me so happy when things finally worked out for them!

"Diana had had a few good ideas in her lifetime, but she was beginning to think her scandal with Lord Bryant was one of the best. "

Driven to distraction with the continual flow of inane men through her office, railroad owner Diana Barton had given up hope that their intentions might be to invest in her company, instead of her future . . . . after all, a husband would gain the right to oversee everyday operations, trumping decisions that Diana had every intention of making herself. The question became, what to do about it? In her desperation to scare off unwanted attention, she did the only thing that came to mind; ruining her reputation, conspiring with the best of the best in the "ruin" department, the infamous Lord Bryant. Surely, no man would want his name coupled with hers after that, and she could get back to the business of running a highly profitable railroad. Two months. Just two months. It was all she needed.

There is something incredibly enchanting about a romance that is trying its hardest not to be. Like actors on a stage without a script, Diana and Everton stumble their way through a most unconventional arrangement, only to discover that what began as a hoax, had a mind all its own. Readers won't be able to turn the pages fast enough!

"Lord Bryant. . . . . I want you to be yourself."

I was invited to read this book through Interviews and Reviews. I purchased a copy of my own.

A Proper Scoundrel by Esther Hatch is a fantastic historical fiction romance that truly kept me engaged and interested throughout.

I have been a fan of Ms. Hatch for quite some time, so as soon as I saw she had a new book coming out, I knew I had to read it. And wow is it a great addition.

It is an addition to a current series (Proper series), however it could easily be read as a stand alone and still be immensely enjoyed.

I loved the story of Lord Bryant. He has been mentioned and introduced in previous books, however he now gets his time to shine. Learning more about this complex, fascinating, intriguing, and well-developed character was so rewarding.

I also truly loved Diana Barton. She is a great lead female character and she is the perfect "opponent" for our Lord Bryant. Their interactions, connection, chemistry, banter, and dialogue was spot on. I always love a great "relationship based on a mutual agreement" that starts out as nothing more then business, but moves onward to a friendship, and then a wonderful relationship. The way the author was able to create characters and a relationship with such volume, depth, and emotion, yet make it realistic, imperfect, and interesting is impeccable.

Ms. Hatch has a real talent at creating such wonderful worlds where history, society, and fictionalized characters all fit together seamlessly. The way that she wrote the overall narrative so that the characters were endearing and evolved, grew, and strengthened as the story moves onward is always such a joy.

I loved this book so much, and it is such a great addition to this series. I cannot recommend this book, and series, enough. It is for anyone that loves not only historical fiction, but also light and clean romance, well-drawn characters, and a richly-drawn narrative that is infused with humor, charm, and depth.

Stunning. 5/5 stars

Thank you to the author and Covenant Communications for this wonderful ARC and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.

Whee! First 5 star read of the year.

I have read one of the author's other books and enjoyed it I decided to give this one a go as well.

*ahem* I am DONE IN. Like, the chemistry and the absolute sexual tension minus the sex in this was WILD. Absolutely wild, I am still reeling from how good it was. Mmm. If you enjoy your anti-hero(?) or love interest in question having a very moody and dramatic opening scene, look no further than this one.

I love our heroine - she is a no nonsense type girl, focused on being a business woman and is getting tired of men (gross ass, sexist men) hounding her and trying to get her to get back in the kitchen and make them food or give them children. So, she gets so fed up and runs to her old school crush who has turned into rake and scandalous man to ruin her reputation so that they would leave her alone and not try to court her.

I absolutely loved the interactions between the two of them, I loved how she was so utterly immune for the longest time but deep down harvesting feelings. The same with him, though he fell in love a lot faster than she did. Or maybe they both did at the same time.

There are two story-lines that are going on the background, both having to do with our man. One is his other engagement with a lady and the other is his previous relationship with his deceased wife. They're good pieces of the plot and they don't drag it down by any means.

This gave me Georgette Heyer vibes of my favorite works from her. I strongly recommend anybody who enjoys Georgette Heyer to pick up anything written by this author. She may not write 100% in tone with the period she is attempting to portray, but she does a good enough job and her stories are 100% perfect enough for me.

All the stars possible for this absolute masterpiece!!! I don't even know where to begin my review of this incredible book. It's basically perfection and I honestly mean that. This genuinely has everything I could hope for in a historical fiction novel: character depth, character development/growth, character chemistry (Hatch holds up her title as the queen of swoony kissing in the clean romance genre), humor (like laugh out loud moments, my cheeks hurt from smiling still), pulls at the heart, and a plot that is both memorable and a reread for me.
I've been a fan of Esther Hatch since I first read the Roses of Feldstone and each book she writes I am more and more impressed (and obsessed) with her writing. Hatch takes a character, Lord Bryant, that we have seen glimpses of in her first two Proper series books, and completely pulls back the curtain in this story, revealing a man with so much more depth and personality than readers could have imagined. It’s even better than I could have ever dreamed of.
I adore Diana Barton! If I could have a fictional best friend, she'd definitely be one of my top choices. The two of them together are totally couple goals and I truly enjoyed watching their story unfold. I love how unpredictable it was. The witty banter and romance kept me completely hooked. This book should come with a warning: you will lose sleep, you will laugh out loud, and you will totally fall in love with Lord Bryant like every other proper female. :) A stunning story, this is a MUST read and a reread for me.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel; all thoughts and opinions are my own. I have also preordered a final print copy of this book due to the way in which I loved it so much!

You guys. I am having THE BEST reading week! If you follow me on Facebook, you know that I just read Jennifer Peel's new book that comes out next month. (review coming soon) I was in full hangover mode heading into this book and I was worried. Now I'm just laughing because THIS. BOOK. Now I have two book hangovers back to back. It's a completely awesome feeling.

This is the kind of book for girls who love a "bad boy" and the woman who finally claims him. Misunderstood, unfairly (and sometimes fairly) judged, a bit on the dark side and pushing the social norm boundaries of his day. Meet Lord Bryant. He's yummy. Honestly. So, so yummy. You can tell this just from the cover, right? I feel like I just watched the loveliest movie play out in my head. Right up there with Pride and Prejudice. Seriously. I was so engaged from beginning to end. Invested. Right there with these characters.

This feels a bit gushy, right? It is. I can't help it. 😍

Go get this book. Block out some time to read it uninterrupted. (especially the last third of the book) This book is what reading is about for me. I loved it.

I love Esther Hatch’s books! If you haven’t read A Proper Scandal and A Proper Charade, you really should! I have been waiting for Lord Bryant’s story since I finished A Proper Charade. And I wasn’t disappointed. I’ll be honest, I read this book in a day. I didn’t want to put it down. It was that good!

This author has such a way with her characters. You feel as though you know them. I was transported to the streets of London with them. And it made me so happy.

I always love a good fake relationship story. Diana Barton goes to Lord Bryant, knowing his reputation. She wants hers to be damaged so she can do what she needs to do. She doesn’t bargain to fall in love.

Lord Bryant is such a complicated character. Through this book and the author’s other books, he’s seen as a cad. But Diana doesn’t think he really is. I loved the lengths she goes to to figure this man out.

This book is such a great swoony romance! I didn’t want to put it down. Thanks to Esther Hatch for writing Lord Bryant’s story. And for giving us a book, I personally will be reading over and over.

I was sent a copy of A Proper Scoundrel as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Oh my gosh! I don’t gush very often but I am now! I absolutely loved this book! I smiled, I laughed, I swooned. I savored every minute from beginning to end. When you get to know Lord Bryant you will see why too.

Lord Bryant is known as a rake and a scoundrel all through London and one night the smart business women, Diana shows up to his home asking him to ruin her reputation to help save her railroad business. As we get to know Lord Bryant we see he is hiding a lot of hurt underneath and Diana may be the one actually helping him. I loved their witty banter and flirting. I loved Diana’s strength. This is written so well I could vividly picture Lord Bryant’s every smile and facial expression. The cover is yummy too! So do yourself a favor and this get book. Find a quiet place to read because you won’t want to be interrupted.

I picked this one up from the library but about a third of the way through I ordered my own copy. Hands down my favorite read of the year!
