Trovo questa serie molto bella . Nella sua semplicità e dolcezza la storia ti fa conoscere non solo i protagonisti ma un'intera cittadina immersa nelle montagne del Colorado. Aspetto il prossimo

La lettera di Phillip Baker arrivò su carta sottile come il ghiaccio del nostro stagno dopo una prima gelata autunnale. Forse quella carta delicata avrebbe dovuto essere un indizio di quello che sarebbe successo. Di come sarebbe cambiata la mia vita. Non si poteva pattinare su un ghiaccio così sottile. Quanto avevo ragione.
4,5 - Questa serie si inserisce a pieno titolo nel filone dei clean romance, ovvero quei romanzi che non contengono scene di sesso né linguaggio esplicito: i cari romanzi "casti" delle nostre nonne, per intenderci.
E tuttavia non solo non ho avvertito minimamente la mancanza di passione, ma anche questo secondo volume si è rivelato una lettura piacevole, molto delicata, con una storia che continua a essere corale e piena di bei sentimenti.
Sono passati circa dieci anni dall'arrivo della maestra Quinn a Emerson Pass e anche nel piccolo villaggio sperduto tra le montagne del Colorado si è sentito l'eco della prima guerra mondiale e poi della devastante epidemia di spagnola.
Josephine, la figlia maggiore dei Barnes, ha perso il fidanzato in guerra e si è rassegnata a trascorrere un'esistenza nell'ombra, come bibliotecaria nubile e devota alla memoria dell'amato.
Ovviamente la sua numerosa famiglia non è d'accordo, anche perché sono sempre stati diffidenti verso questo fidanzato lontano e mai conosciuto.
Ma se loro non possono fare nulla, è l'arrivo di un altro straniero, che riporta a Josephine le lettere lasciate dal soldato caduto, a rompere i fragili equilibri che la ragazza si è costruita nel suo lutto.
Philip è stato a sua volta orfano e soldato, ma è riuscito a mantenersi una brava persona, un'anima perfetta per ritrovarsi accolto dagli abitanti del luogo e apprezzare un nuovo nido accanto ai boschi.
Un'altra lettura che lascia con un bel messaggio positivo e affezionati ai vari personaggi.
Inutile dire che attendo davvero con trepidazione i prossimi volumi (anticipazione: ci sarà Theo).
«Spero che sia bello come il demonio» disse Flynn. «E che ti riporti nella terra dei vivi.»

Another sweet Emerson Pass book! I just loved spending time again with all the characters from "The School Mistress." Such a great story and family. I can't wait for the next one!

Questa serie mi piace molto, amo il periodo storico, la descrizione del paesaggio, ma soprattutto come i vari membri di questa comunità si aiutino a vicenda, ritroviamo tutti i membri della famiglia Barnes, ancora una volta mi hanno commossa e divertita e la storia tra Josephine e Philip è molto romantica ❤️...

Grazie alla traduzione attenta e curata di Isabella Nanni con la quale esalta la prosa avvolgente di Tess Thompson, torniamo alle emozionanti vicende di Emerson Pass con un secondo volume molto intenso. Con un salto temporale di 10 anni ritroviamo la città immersa nelle incantevoli montagne del Colorado la cui comunità, nel frattempo, è cresciuta divenendo più omogenea e compatta e grazie anche all' impegno e alla solidarietà di Alexander e Quinn gli abitanti hanno raggiunto una dimensione più serena, assestando finalmente i propri equilibri emotivi e sociali e superando quei momenti bui di intolleranza che, nel primo volume, avevano portato a scontri e sofferenza.
Ritroviamo soprattutto le avvincenti vicende della numerosa famiglia Barnes i cui ragazzi ora sono dei giovani maturi in cerca del loro posto nella società. La storia è incentrata su Josephine la maggiore tra i fratelli che in seguito alla morte del suo fidanzato avvenuta durante un cambattimento in guerra vive crogiolandosi nei ricordi nostalgici di un amore appena nato e terminato tragicamente. Jo è una donna adulta e indipendente, gestisce con successo e passione la biblioteca della città ma ha chiuso il suo cuore convinta che nessun uomo potrà mai prendere il posto lasciato vuoto da un amore tanto breve quanto intenso. L' arrivo di Phillip Baker ad Emerson Pass scuoterà la sua vita rimettendo in discussione tutte le sue certezze e i sentimenti provati per un uomo che forse non meritava tanta dedizione. Philip ha vissuto le atrocità della guerra, la paura e l' angoscia devastante sono impressi ancora nei suoi occhi, occhi che hanno visto da vicino l' orrore della morte, occhi che hanno divorato parola dopo parola quelle lettere arrivate al fronte una dopo l' altra come un balsamo a lenire, a curare, a proteggere, a confortare un' anima devastata. Il prossimo volume conosceremo Theo uno dei gemelli Barnes la cui fragilità e sensibilità mi ha colpito profondamente.

of 'shell shock?' Or mental illness like his late mom?
Josephine, the eldest, lost her love Walter to war. Phil,
a military veteran, arranged to come to town to bring Jo
Walter's letters. Jo ran a library, yet we seldom saw
her doing this work.
Alex used his wealth for good. The Cassidy widow and
her daughters were hard pressed to run the farm
and were low on food. The community seemed to
neglect them, until they didn't.
Jo's sis Cym acted obnoxious. Jo confronted an antagonist,
alone (as Quinn did in bk #1). These two stories, IMO,
tried to depict an ideal, not a real world.

A delightful historical romance!
This story, with it's picturesque setting and endearing characters draws you into Jo's story. Set in 1919, Phillip Baker is drawn to Emerson Pass after reading letters Josephine Barnes wrote to another man. An orphan, Phillip longs for the type of family Jo writes of and wants to experience the tight knit community of Emerson Pass. Jo has declared herself a Spinster after the man she fell in love with died in the war and has dedicated herself to her library, her books and her family. Notably, Jo is worried about her brothers, who have returned from the war without physical scars, but definitely are changed. When Phillip arrives he fits in both with the Barnes family and the town, thus testing Jo's resolve to remain a Spinster.
Filled with love, family and community, anyone who enjoys stories like 'Little House on the Prairie' or 'When Calls the Heart' will fall in love Tess Thompson's Emerson Pass Historicals.

Tess Thompson at her best...again...The Spinster is incredibly well written and compelling. A love story without the sap, taking place in the wonderful winter town of Emerson Pass. Details are meticulous...the fashion, food, the way of life. The war, the casualties of war, the heaviness of war.. the effects on the soldiers, their families and loved ones. Each character holds their own and of course, some we have already met and were happy to see again. There's also a cad, some ungentlemanly behavior, and much drama...Lots of love, the warmth of family and the tight community in a small town...and this all adds up to a most satisfying read.. I choked up repeatedly, and I'm pretty hard to choke...the story touched me. While I love all of Thompson's books, there's a special place in my heart for her historical fiction.

I LOVED Josephine in The School Mistress of Emerson Pass and I was so happy to see that her story is next in the series. She didn't disappoint in this novel. She's all grown up, with a job, she has family and friends who love her, and in walks a sweet and handsome stranger who turns her world upside down with what he has to say about the man she's been writing to. I adored Jo's picture-perfect ending, just like many of the books she likes to read!
Getting to know all of the Emerson Pass characters is an investment (there's so many of them!), but in them it's like you're being adopted into a second family. Lord Barnes, Quinn, and their seven children are all back, along with others from the previous book. So looking forward to seeing what they all get up to in life and love.

Boring !!. Its one of those goody goody books, where everybody's kind, and caring and go out of their way to help everybody else. There's no villain here- only circumstances that might cause a minor disagreement or strife. There are absolutely no surprises- predictable plot line with Ok characters.
The writing's just too basic and contemporary. I'm not sure the concept of ' having a crush' existed around 1910. Phrases like "reach out too" is very modern.
Overall, I'm disappointed, it didn't match the synopsis on the blurb.

The writing's just too basic and contemporary. I'm not sure the concept of ' having a crush' existed around 1910. Phrases like "reach out too" is very modern.
Overall, I'm disappointed, it didn't match the synopsis on the blurb.

Altro libro carino e leggero della serie e non tanto per la storia d'amore in sé, che praticamente fila liscia sin da subito, ma per la comunità di Emerson Pass e il loro senso di appartenenza.

Loved it! I feel like I am living in this small, historical town. I love all the characters. Nothing too exciting happens, just a nice, sweet story and setting. On to the next!

There are authors whose novels just make me feel like I'm returning home to a family I love and settling in under a warm cozy blanket to "catch up" with what's been going on and a Tess Thompson novel is just that kind of author. This is how I felt picking up The Spinster... the third novel in the historical/contemporary series that is set in the beautiful, fictional town of Emerson Pass, Colorado. The Barnes family is who the series is centered around and the generations of their members. The Spinster focuses on the elder daughter, Josephine, who has lost her betrothed, Walter, in the Great War. She has now decided that, quote: "I'll never give my heart to anyone else. I'm the spinster of the family." This is so heartbreaking and tragic for a young woman like Josephine with her whole life ahead.
But sometimes things happen for a reason and there's another plan that has not even been considered. Phillip Baker. A complete stranger to Josephine. He's an aquaintance to her lost love and he makes contact with her, hoping to return the touching letters she's sent to Walter. He has a big secret that he's traveling to Emerson Pass with but he can't turn away from trying to reach Josephine. "The idea of fate, even soul mates, has crossed my mind. Was there a reason beyond mortal comprehension that I'd been the one who ended up with the box of her correspondence?"
Josephine and Phillip's story begins when he takes a risk and travels to Emerson Pass. Ms. Thompson sparks a small ember of connection between the two. She then entwines and twists together the characters into a story that drew me in and made me feel what each of them were going through. She puts me into the lives of her characters in such a deep and involved way that I fall in love with them completely. I can't help but want to turn the pages and become a part of their lives.
Ms. Thompson's attention to detail, both in her characters and settings, is intricate and descriptive. She pulls the words from her heart and places them in her characters who become like family to me. The scenes are written with details that create perfect images in my mind. I was 100% into this book and couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
This series has me hooked and I can't wait for the next novel to come out! I love to escape into the Emerson Pass world and spend time with the people who live there. It's a wonderful escape and a wonderful way to spend time in a book! I want to thank Ms. Thompson for the privilege and honor of reading another great book. I loved it! All thoughts and opinions in this review are my heartfelt own.

I'm speechless! It was such a great pleasure being swept away from this crowded but somehow cold stressed out world to suddenly wake up into a completely different one just some hundred years ago cuddled in a cloud of pureness, love, family, true friendship and a feeling of belongingness. It was like coming back home for the best family gathering ever!
I tried to read slow and I did! I wanted to enjoy every passage of this beautiful story. Josephine and Phillip's love story. A great community story continuation. I can't find the words to describe how much I loved those endearing amazing people in this picturesque setting of small mountain town built by Barnes family. How I would love to really visit them so real it felt to me! Now it will be very hard to wait for the story to be continued which I'm so excited already for!

Dopo la storia della maestra Quinn, giunta all'ovest per insegnare a Emerson Pass, ma che alla fine si innamora di Lord Barnes e dei suoi 5 figli, la serie si sposta in avanti di dieci anni con i figli ormai grandi, più i due avuti dalla coppia.
Jo è la figlia maggiore, ha 23 anni e il cuore spezzato.
Jo è innamorata di Walter ma lui è partito per la guerra ed è stato dichiarato morto. Jo ha promesso che non si sposerà mai e dedicherà la sua vita alla memoria di Walter.
Phillip è stato un commilitone di Walter. Viene da NY, dove è cresciuto in un orfanotrofio, è senza famiglia e le lettere di Jo, che scriveva a Walter, gli hanno dato conforto durante la guerra.
Phillip conosce la vera natura di Walter, che non è mai stato innamorato di Jo, ma la vedeva come una ricca ereditiera. Lei insieme ad altre donne che ha abbindolato prima di partire per garantirsi un futuro ricco.
Ora che Walter è morto, Phillip sente il bisogno di avvertire quella ragazza che lo incuriosito attraverso le sue lettere. Così parte per Emerson Pass in cerca di un posto dove vivere e dove poter essere finalmente felice.
Libro davvero carino nel quale ritroviamo anche i protagonisti del volume precedente e veniamo introdotti anche ai prossimi, che avranno per protagonisti i vari figli di Alexander e Quinn.
Ho apprezzato molto Phillip, un uomo davvero forte che ha tanto sofferto e ora vuole solo essere felice. E ha capito che vuole Jo. Sa che non ha molto da offrirle e che lei sta soffrendo molto, ma Phillip è un uomo molto paziente.
Jo invece mi ha fatto arrabbiare all'inizio con questo suo amore assurdo per Walter che ha frequentato per soli 15 giorni. Addirittura decidere di restare zitella per uno che si conosce a malapena è inconcepibile.
Per fortuna rinsavisce in fretta.
Colpo di scena finale abbastanza prevedibile, ma non per questo il libro perde di valore.

Miciolose, quando ho deciso di leggere la serie di Emerson Pass, di cui questo è il secondo libro (il primo è “Una maestra per Emerson Pass), non sapevo se mi sarebbe piaciuta, e quando ho iniziato a leggerla mi ha ricordato un po’ la serie “Una famiglia americana” che, come “La casa nella prateria” mi è sempre sembrata un po’ troppo melodrammatica e luuuuunga, troppo lungha.
Mano a mano però che scorrevo le pagine mi sono accorta che le mie paure e i miei timori erano totalmente infondati e mi sono ritrovata a divorare la storia tra Josephine e Phillip e di tutta la famiglia Barnes.
La storia è ambientata dopo la Grande Guerra e ci presenta subito Josephine, la figlia maggiore di Lord Barnes, che tiene tra le mani la lettera di Phillip Baker che non solo la informa della morte di Walter Green, l’uomo di cui si era innamorata, ma anche che preannuncia la sua visita per restituirle tutto quanto aveva spedito al fronte.
Phillip le nasconde però di essersi innamorato di lei leggendo le lettere che scriveva a Walter e desidera incontrarla dal vivo per capire se è così bella di persona come lo era in foto. Vorrebbe anche raccontarle la verità sull’uomo che amava, perché desidera che lei si rifaccia una vita e che non aspetti un uomo che non la merita, sebbene tema di spezzarle il cuore…

Colorado, 1919. Josephine Barnes scrive ogni giorno al suo adorato fidanzato che combatte tra le trincee della Grande Guerra. Devastata dal dolore quando viene ucciso in combattimento, giura di non sposarsi mai e nasconde la disperazione dedicandosi alla costruzione della prima biblioteca della città. Ma rimane senza fiato quando un gentiluomo cortese le scrive chiedendole di farle visita per restituirle le lettere contenenti le sue dichiarazioni d’amore.
Sono passati 10 anni da quando Quinn arriva a Emerson Pass, cambiando sia la sua vita che quella della famiglia Barnes.
Questa volta però la protagonista è Josephine, la primogenita. Si innamora di un ragazzo che purtroppo muore in guerra, e un suo commilitone, Philip Baker va da lei per riportarle le lettere che aveva spedito.
Ho fatto bene a leggerlo come apertura per il periodo natalizio. Infatti la storia si sviluppa proprio in questo periodo. Letto in un soffio. Ho adorato tutto. E' un libro corale, per cui troviamo anche le storie dei fratelli e delle sorelle di Josehine. E anche dei gli abitanti di Emerson Pass.
E' un libro delicato, dolce, pieno di buoni sentimenti. Dove l'amore è un bacio alla luce della luna, dove il solo sfiorarsi fa venire le farfalle allo stomaco. Dove conta l'onestà, l'amicizia, e ci si aiuta. Ti fa venire voglia di ritornare indietro nel tempo, quando tutto era più semplice.
Mi è davvero piaciuto. E' stato un balsamo per il mio cuore, anche se non ho dato quattro stelle perchè non mi hanno troppo preso i protagonisti. Per il resto tutto perfetto. Anzi adesso sono super curiosa di leggere il prossimo che parla di Theo.
Consiglio a chi vuole una lettura semplice, senza troppi drammi, dove tutto si risolve grazie all'aiuto del prossimo. Dove l'amore , è l'amore per la famiglia, per gli amici, per la natura. Una lettura super dolce, da cariarsi i denti. ;P

jo, la maggiore, è la protagonista di questa storie che però come nello stile dell'autric enon manca di avere quel tocco di coralità
innamorata dell'amore, jo piange un fidanzato che in realtà era un truffatore in cerca di ereditiere; dato per morto nella prima guerra mondiale, il suo compagno di armi riporta a jo le lettere ma fin da subito capiamo che è di tutt'altro genere e sentimenti
la loro è una storia molto tenera che si sviluppa sopratutto come un'amicizia e che rnede la lettura davvero molto scorrevole
bellissimi i personaggi di cymbaline, shannon, poppy vere donne forti in un inizio di novencento che vide tutti grandi sconvolgimenti susseguirsi senza sosta, così come si anticipa la PTSD di cui erano afflitti già i soldati della tremenda grande guerra
in queste storie si conferma una dolce sensualità e nessun passaggio "hot" (e che qui non ne sentiamo la mancanza)
precisa e puntuale la traduzione che rende agevole la lettura

The Spinster by Tess Thompson is a wonderful book about family, home, and love--and surrounding oneself with goodness and hope and light. There is so much warmth and heart on each and every page of this book, I felt ever word.
The story is set in the early 1920s, just a few years after the Great War, and many are still feelings its effects. Josephine Barnes lost the man she loved during the war, and has resigned herself to the fact that she will be a spinster--until a handsome stranger who served in the war with the man she loved arrives at her family's home in Emerson Pass.
The setting of Emerson Pass is so lovely, even during the harsh winter months. In this book, the setting is a huge part of the story, as it's the place that defines Josephine Barnes and her family; a place where neighbors take care of each other; a place where the children, now young adults, grew up together. The author does such a wonderful job of placing us in that era, a time when the world was ever-changing and evolving.
The characters in the book are truly endearing. Each of them are unique and bring so much to this fabulous story.

The Spinster is the second book in the Emerson Pass Historicals series, this is another amazing book by Tess Thompson. This is such a wonderful book beautifully written story surrounding, love and hope. Set in the early 1920's after the war, and Phillip comes to Colorado to meet Josephine and bring her letters from her sweetheart that lost his life in the war. What follows is a easy and sweet romance I would certainly recommend this book to others. I received a ARC from the author and publisher and am under no obligation to leave a favorable review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
