Five Island Cove #6

Four Weddings and a Baby

Rate this book
Four weddings and a baby are on their way to Five Island Cove!

Eloise has been waiting for her dream wedding for months. When the Cove Chronicles calls it "the wedding of the year" and literally the whole town is invited, she wants everything to be perfect.

Burst pipes don't make for perfect wedding dresses, though.

Laurel Baker has just been promoted to detective in the narcotics unit, and her first case is one that's gone unsolved for a year now. She's desperate to find out who's bringing drugs into the cove, but each clue she uncovers leads to one of the women she's grown to love.

She has to juggle her friendship with Alice, who's started a new relationship with her children's guidance counselor. And Kelli, who finds herself with a new boyfriend...who happens to live right next door to her. Laurel doesn't want to hurt AJ, who is off her pregnancy bed-rest now, but her new challenge is meeting her fiancé's grown children–and the reception isn't all rainbows and sunshine.

AJ's determined to go through with the wedding, even if not everyone is thrilled it's happening. Laurel can always rely on Robin, as she's planning Laurel's end-of-summer wedding.

But Robin's busier than ever as she's taken on dozens of clients to pay for her husband's new fishing boat and Duke is off to Alaska again.

Kristen is usually there to pick up any pieces that fall, but this summer finds her moving into a new house for the first time in fifty years.

When Laurel finally uncovers the truth, fingers are pointed in every direction, friendships are threatened, and romantic relationships strained. And who will be the ones standing at the altar for that fourth wedding?

Join Alice, AJ, Kelli, Robin, Kristen, Eloise, and Laurel as they learn how strong they really are, and the great power they hold as women, and as friends, in any circumstance.

This is book six of the Five Island Cove series and has a lot of characters to follow as the wedding of the year is about to take place on the island. The first wedding is that of Eloise, the owner of the Cliffside Inn, and Aaron, the local Police Chief, along with almost all of the most important people in the cove. Eloise is getting on well as step-mother to Aaron’s two daughter’s Billie and Grace. It is going to be a major political event, due to Aaron’s father’s position and the whole police force is due to attend, either undercover as protection for all the VIP guests, or as guests of the bride and groom themselves! It is Robin’s biggest wedding of the year to organise and a last minute emergency when the wedding dress boutique is flooded, due to a burst pipe next door! Robin is busier than ever, with AJ and Matt’s wedding next, before AJ has her baby. Robin has been trying to get as much work as possible, to help pay for her husband Duke’s new fishing boat, whilst he will soon be off to Alaska to earn the majority of his earnings for the year, leaving her home alone with their two daughters Mandie and Jamie.

AJ was forced onto bed rest by her doctor, but once that is over, she has to get ready for Matt’s grown-up children, Justin, Lisa and Derrick, to visit before their wedding. Not all goes well at the start, as assumptions are made about the timing of her relationship with their father and the baby news. Matt is busier than ever with the golf course he and his father run on the next island and a new opportunity closer to home, whilst AJ is trying her hand at writing a few more articles. Laurel is the newest member of the Seafaring Girls regular lunches and has just been promoted to the narcotics unit on the island and her new and older partner Thom, are trying to solve the year long problem of a large amount of hard drugs arriving on the islands. Every clue she manages to find seems to link to one of her new friends or their partners, leaving her having to do her job, no matter how that might affect their friendships. Two men are found in a sting at the small airport, but their stories are too practiced to be totally believed and a much more important player is thought to be in charge of the drugs coming in. As she and her partner look for the kingpin, it could be one of many important and well connected people on the island.

Alice, who runs her own law office from her home and is mother to twins Charlie and Ginny, is finding both her seventeen years old twins is getting interested in the opposite sex and she worries about any pressures they may succumb to from their peers. Whilst also starting a new relationship herself with Arthur, their high school counsellor. Alice and Kelli are Laurel’s two main friends, both of whom are in new relationships. Kelli is soon to open her wellness centre, Whole Soul, offering yoga and more on the island, saving mostly women from having to take the ferry to another place for treatments. She has started a friendship that may become more, with her neighbour Shad, who works as the financial manager for the town. Laurel also has her own wedding to Paul, the deputy police chief on the island, to prepare for at the end of the summer, leaving most of the organisation to wedding planner Robin.

Kristen is the older member of the lunch girls group, having been the one who brought most of them together all those years ago running the Seafaring Girls group. She used to live in the lighthouse with her husband and then moved into the adjoining house, leaving her son Reuben and his wife Jean to run the lighthouse. Kristen is now moving into an over 55’s apartment to make her life easier and to continue enjoying her life doing what she loves by the sea. She feels for her daughter-in-law who is unable to have a baby, but they have put in papers for adoption and will have to keep their fingers crossed. All of the women are in a text group, which they use to pass on news or requests for help to each other. If one of them drops off from replying, guaranteed another one of them would go round and check on them in person. They were all there for each other. When a fire on a supply ship is thought to be a cover for the drugs trade, one of the items AJ is waiting for, seems to have gone up in smoke. Added to that is Laurel and her partner closing in on the kingpin, who of course points the finger at a number of other people, leaving nearly all the friends affected in one way or another. Their friendships are put under huge strain, as well as romantic relationships, as trust is under question and Laurel’s wedding may end up as a smaller event than planned.

A large group of friends and characters, which at times are very difficult to keep straight in your head as you read the book. Even having read other books in this series, this is the main complaint I have. Could the stories not focus on a couple of the main characters in each book, leaving the story easier to follow? Then have others in the next, and so on. If you are able to read them all straight after one another, without any gap, then it will obviously be a lot easier. The story itself is a great one showing the strength of these women and their long standing friendships, as well as the romantic relationships they all get involved in. They face a number of hurdles and difficult circumstances, from past, present and future, but always work their way through them. I have enjoyed the books I have read in this series so far, but they have a very complex list of characters, their partners and even children and mothers, to keep straight which I only manage by writing them down as I read. I wish I didn’t have to, but I still look forward to the next book in the series! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Confusing

Too many main characters in this book, I couldn't keep them straight. It would have been better to have concentrated on just a few of them.

Friendship

Although there are so many names and relationships to sort out when reading this book, it is a shining example of how true friendship works, through thick and thin, rather like the marriage vows.

Loved how these women all friends find love. How they found forgiveness for Laura a cop who with her partner cracked a big drug case.

five Island series

Things I didn’t like: I’m a very logical person, with memory for detail, and I found it very annoying that the author can’t seem to remember facts! On one page Grace was 10years old, then later 9years old. At the end of the Christmas one, after the tsunami, Kristen went back to her cottage to find a caping hole in the roof and other damage, and decided to walk away and find another home! Leaving memories of Joel behind. At Christmas she’d moved in with Robin and Duke until she found somewhere. Yet here she is in this book, offering AJ to stay at her house, then deciding the “secret” she’ll share at Wednesday lunch some months later is the fact that she’s looking for a house and will move! And of course they are all so surprised! Ginny had a date for the prom in the last book and Alice had taken her shopping and they ‘d found a gorgeous blue dress! Here she is asked to the prom at a Taco party at her house, and Alice says she’ll take her to find a dress!! That names just a few things.
The book is also very over the top on emotions, the friends were constantly looking at each other and their hearts/chests, squeezing, swelling, clutching etc with love for each other! Got too much. Hearts continually dropping through their feet etc one page Robins the strongest and leader, another, she’s spinning out of control!
HOWEVER!! What I loved. The basic characters of the group, and my favourite books are always about friendships. The author really does keep you interested, (high drama, over and over) and the books are hard to put down. I keep telling myself I won’t buy the next one so I can get some work done, but I do! This is a great series so far.

It was such fun returning to Five Island Cove in this next book in the series. I really liked the group of women who are true friends, no matter what happened. Sometimes they needed to be reminded of that. It was fun reading about all of the weddings and what each couple wanted or needed for their special day. They were all unique, from elaborate to a simple backyard wedding. They certainly kept Robin busy.

This book was also interesting because of Laurel being switched to narcotics and searching for how drugs were reaching their Five Island Cove. I liked that it was intense, overwhelming, and that it almost destroyed some friendships when everything seemed to happen at once.

What I liked the best was the special friendship that each of these women borught to their special circle. They grew together, laughed together, and even cried together because they were true friends and so much more. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

FOUR WEDDINGS AND A BABY is a great continuation of the FIVE ISLAND COVE series. This is the sixth book and I'm so glad there will be a seventh with THE SEAFARING GIRLS. There are wonderful characters that I've grown to love throughout the series and love seeing some of them get their happily ever after with new loves. It's nice to see how their children and families are growing too and how their careers and businesses are blooming. There is a depth to the characters and it's great they're not stagnant and we still learn new things about them and their lives.

There is a nice flow to the story and there are four weddings sprinkled throughout as one of their best friends' Robin gets to plan them all as their wedding planner. There is a lot of drama woven in along with family and friends, lots of beach time, a crime to solve, problems that come with having kids growing up, laughter, tears, anger, sadness, love, romance and so much more. The beautiful descriptions of the islands, the beaches, the homes and businesses made me feel like I was there. There are many happily ever afters along with a new baby and nice closure. I loved the sneak peek in the back of the book of THE SEAFARING GIRLS that left me wanting more.

Ms. Newton is an author whose books I look forward to reading more of. Once this series ends I look forward to reading what she pens next.

Wow there is lots going on in this book so make sure you get really comfy as you won't be putting this book down until the end! Robin is getting run off her feet with weddings to plan including some for her group of friends and with one wedding it is really going to push her to her planning limits, while the weddings are being planned and happening Laurel has a new job and things look like it is going to splinter the friendships she has been making with the women. Then we have AJ and her struggles with not only her permanency but meeting Matt's adult kids and big changes for Kirsten and more changes for all of them. You will laugh, cry, want to high five someone as well as worry, get frustrated, want to give each and every one of the women the biggest hug and be shocked by some of the twist and surprises.

I loved the continuation of the story in Book 6 there was alot of friendship conflicts in this book.
Also this Book focused on one of the newer characters who was not a original one of the group.
There was a happy event which brought all the girls together.
There were also alot of weddings and suprises.
There was also drama which threatened them all and Friendships were fractured.
There were also twists in the story and a mystery to be solved.
I have enjoyed reading the series and look forward to reading Book 7 The Seafaring Girls.

Besides romance there´s a whole lot of action in this story and the main role belongs to the newest addition to the group - she is able to disable the drug ring that is being formed in the islands, and she brings hell to herself and her friends. There are babies, many weddings, engagements, people moving along with their lives as it is meant to be. The characters and story are very relatable and written in a very interesting way. Entertaining and easy to read.

This series of books is probably one my all time favorites. These friendships are so strong and I feel like I know these women, it truly feels like coming home or getting a glimpse into their lives. In this book, Eloise, AJ, Laurel, Kelli and Alice all get married and each wedding is uniquely that couple. It is so fun to see Robin’s type A personality at each wedding. Of course the book has a Happy for now ending and I cannot wait for the next one!

In the midst of their lives comes four weddings and a baby as well as a new member or two. The fourth wedding was a surprise to me and I loved it. We learn more about the friendships within the group as well as their group friendship. The children of the women are growing up and finding love of their own. There is some angst of course but their friendship doesn't fall apart. Relationships are tested and changes are in store for many. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Great series

I have read in order all the books in this series so far. They have all been a "feel good" kind of reading experience. Each character has their own unique personality and different ways of handling their problems, but close friendships among them, and the support they give each other, always comes out the winner. This series really lets the reader know what true friendship is about even with the passing of many years. Love and loyalty go hand in hand.

How happy can the Cove girl be?

If you have read any or all of the first five books in this series, you owe it to yourself to read this book. It has more suspense than any of the others. Some of the happenings were strung out a bit though, I thought, but not to a great extent. Oh how these girls love each other!! These books continue to hold my interest. Is there really a place called Five Island Cove? If so, at this particular point in time, they have a handle on happiness!

Friendship is such a blessing

Friendship is such a blessing this book doesa great job of displaying all the sides of frienship. I feel like i am apart of the seafaring girls.
The authir has such a way of pulling you and making you feel invested in the lives of these ladies.
So much love, affection, caring, sacrificing, & much more. The story develops at a steady pace.
I definitely recommend.

This is book 6 in a series. I had not read the other books so it was harder for me to keep track of all the characters. There are 6 main characters and the men in their lives as well as their children so it’s a lot to follow. Having said that, I enjoyed the storyline and characters which were believable.

I like these characters, but the books are getting too long, too much of the same, and the author is writing them too fast. They are blending together for me and I'm losing interest. They need to be spread out a little more.

A feel-good story to read in the summer and also after finishing a complex novel. A continuing saga to the 5 previous stories but as the author summarizes events in the past book, it could be read as a stand-alone. Although not realistic as far as the friendships, it's nice to think that somewhere people do face their problems and communicate with each other.

I am really enjoying this series have come to know these women and feel like they are friends of mine...altho I have to say they are a lot more forgiving and loving with each other than I might be. They continue to care and support each other through life's good and bad and I will continue to read about them for as long as they exist.

I am so enjoying this series. It's wonderful how these women are able to maintain their friendships and sustain each other through the good times and the challenging ones. In this book there is an external threat to almost everyone connected to these women and they have to band together to get through it all! A very charming book series.

This is a beautiful story of love between old friends, new friends, and family. It also has some mystery included. I felt sorry for Laurel when she had to bring in some of her friends’ family members, but stuff happens! I am excited for the new offshoot series as well.
