A Navy ship fights to survive an inexplicable event in this action-packed Bermuda Triangle thriller . . .
Every year, all across the planet, people simply vanish, never to be seen again. Some areas of the world are well known for this phenomenon--like the area that would become known as the Bermuda Triangle after the famed Flight 19 incident off the Florida coast in 1945.
Now, in the present day, an unexplainable event has occurred in the same area--an event that cannot be ignored by the military. The Navy ship Eclipse and its crew are sent to investigate, but after several days come up empty. Then, two days before the planned return to port, the event reoccurs, and the Eclipse is caught up in something it cannot escape. The ship and its crew suddenly find themselves completely isolated, all communication lost, surrounded by a terribly hostile environment where each day is a struggle to survive--in this intense, fast-paced novel of self-reliance, mystery, and discovery.
I was a kid in the 70s. The Bermuda Triangle got a lot of airtime back them. There was even a movie made about it. It was this big mystery – what happened to the ships and people and things that went into that area and were never heard from or seen again?
In Infinity’s Gateway, James S. Parker does a fabulous job of envisioning what might have happened. The action starts right off the bat, in the WWII era. During a training exercise, several Navy planes go missing. They’re there and then, they aren’t. No one can explain it.
Fast forward to the present day. An anomaly of some kind is sighted out in the ocean. The Navy sends the Eclipse, a top-of-the-line research vessel, and personnel both military and civilian to investigate. The Eclipse carries Argos, the biggest, baddest, smartest, indeed, most self-aware computer ever created. Surely with Argos online, they can figure out what this thing is.
Nope.
From there, the mystery and adventure just deepens. I’m not going to tell you what happens. Parker does a bang-up job of that. Let’s just say there’s a lot of action, some unexpected twists and turns, suspense, intrigue, and some pretty out-of-this world stuff. It is a fascinating imagining of how the Bermuda Triangle might operate.
It didn’t take me too long to get engrossed in this book, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next in the series. Parker is working on a screenplay request, and I for one think it will make a great movie or series. I’d even pay full movie ticket prices to go see it (and I don’t do that often).
If you like whopping good sci-fi stories with a bit of history to them, well researched and well written, pick up Infinity’s Gateway. Five super stars from me.
Infinity’s Gateway by James S. Parker was a timely read for me since I have a Florida trip coming up and also have a Bermuda Triangle story of my own. When I was 8, I was on the maiden voyage of Carnival Cruise’s Ecstasy that sailed out to the Bahamas. When we were in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle, something shut off (the stabilizers perhaps?) and tons of people were getting seasick. I am not a conspiracy theorist but I am terrified of the Bermuda Triangle to this day because of the experience.
Parker’s characters obviously faced greater obstacles than getting seasick. I can’t imagine the terror of flying and suddenly losing all communication and instruments. I was invested from the onset with Parker’s choice to reimagine Flight 19 and the frenzied orchestration of people that were desperate to bring everyone home safely. You know that it’s not going to end well, but that doesn’t stop you from hoping that it will all work out.
When we are brought to the present, it feels like everyone is trying their best to not utter the name “Bermuda Triangle.” On one hand, I get it. These are military people who operate off of cold hard facts and not tabloids. On the other hand, Area 51… but I digress. While I felt that the scenes leading up to the actual departure of the Eclipse were a bit long, it was interesting to hear all of the different theories of what the gateway was. I won’t go into them because that kind of spoils the point of reading the book, but I liked getting a glimpse into the military mindset of things.
What really makes or breaks a story for me are the characters. I don’t have to like them necessarily, but they have to be interesting and believable. Brett Colton is compared to James Bond and I have to agree with that assessment. Colton appears to harbor very few secrets but at the same time, holds his true self very close to his vest. It’s kind of like how everybody knows what James Bond’s real name is (isn’t that a no no if you’re a secret agent?) but they don’t know what really goes on in his heart. There are other characters that are equally interesting as well that I hope get fleshed out even more in the next book.
While slow at times, I really enjoyed the series of events that occurred and could imagine them playing out on the big screen. I envision a Predator meets The X-Files type flick with a leading man that is unquestionably strong and manly with just a hint of sarcasm. Try as I might, I had trouble picturing anyone other than Michelle Rodriguez as badass Garrett. Parker doesn’t give much of a physical description for Father Ryan, but I couldn’t help but imagine a handsome, older yet physically fit priest. Forgive me Father for I have sinned.
There were so many different directions that Parker could have taken with this book and I am excited about the choices that he made. I truly look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Just when you thought the Bermuda Triangle was a myth, along comes a story that makes you wonder if it is real and what might happen if you were caught in this phenomenon.
The story starts during WWII when several fighter planes go missing. Jump forward 50ish years later and some strange energy readings are noted and a research vessel with a supercomputer is sent off to try and figure out what is going on and how it might impact the world. What happens next is nothing anyone could ever imagine.
This action-packed adventure will take you on the ride of your life. It is hard to tell you much about what I liked without giving away too much of the story. The details were amazing and I feel like the author did a lot of research to get some of the details correct...and here is where I can't say what without giving away too much. The characters are diverse and multi-faceted and each one brings a special something to the story. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters and their actions and reactions to the crazy situations that they found themselves in and how they handled the unknown. I thought about how I might react and I don't think it would have been as well as these characters.
And then the ending...talk about a cliffhanger! OMG, I am now so intrigued as to what might happen next for the cast of characters. There are so many possibilities and I can only imagine where this story might go next.
If you are a fan of science fiction, adventure, perhaps just a bit of the supernatural/paranormal, and staying up late to finish the book then you will want to add this one to your to be read list.
I have been a fan of Bermuda Triangle mysteries since I was a youngling and pored over one of my parents' books (possibly a Time Life book?) about it. I am not sure I've read anything since about the Bermuda Triangle until James S. Parker's INFINITY'S GATEWAY, which has a cliffhanger ending that will guarantee my getting book two, which can't get written soon enough for my liking.
I loved, loved this book but am going to have a tough time writing a review because of how many elements I must tiptoe around in order to avoid spoilers! I enjoyed the story being told primarily from the military perspective and a group of people who are REALLY resistant to believing what all the facts are pointing to. Suffice it to say that Parker can weave a fascinating and engaging story that will have readers pondering and asking, "What if?"
Interesting concept, although the characters were fairly stereotypical. It did make me laugh on occasion, although I'm sure that's not what the author was planning. 🙂
It's the first in a trilogy, but it's debatable if I'll continue with it.
I’m a huge fan of the two authors whose work this novel, Infinity’s Gateway was compared to – Michael Crichton and Tom Clancy – and I love anything that takes place on ships, so I knew this novel would be right up my alley, and I was not wrong. James S. Parker’s latest novel has that perfect balance of technical detail and action-adventure that makes for a fun and gripping story. Plus it’s a new exploration of the Bermuda Triangle myths. It’s been far too long since we’ve had something new in that niche.
Beginning in post-WWII Florida and later jumping to a more contemporary setting, I found Parker’s story to be incredibly well crafted. His attention to the technical detail of both past and modern naval vessels was obvious as were the subtle differences in speech patterns and word choices for each time. I also felt that the pacing he used was appropriate for the story he was telling. There was enough specificity that you could easy visualize everything that was going on, but at no point did it feel like there was too much exposition. Similarly, while there were a LOT of characters introduced in the early chapters – from admirals to ensigns, and congressmen to chaplains – it was never confusing keeping track of who was who.
One thing I particularly loved about this novel were the interjections about the Bermuda Triangle itself, even mentioning that “Mr. Spock” had narrated a show about it in the 1970s. I like it when fiction acknowledges contemporary culture and pop culture (the comments about funding for Navy projects were also appreciated) instead of ignoring them, because it grounds the work in our world (references to the Many Worlds theory notwithstanding).
Overall, this is a well-written, compelling adventure story with touches of philosophy, mystery, and wonder, and I really enjoyed reading it.
A strange event has happened in the Bermuda Triangle. It has a huge energy reading but by the time the US military gets anyone in that area there is nothing to see. Is this just another fanciful Bermuda Triangle story? To make sure this is not an act of war, the Navy sends in the special ship, Eclipse with a team of top scientists and marines. When the even happens a second time the Eclipse disappears yet finds themselves in a new world. There they find amazing creatures and things. But will they be able to find their way home.
It’s hard to post a summary of this book and not give too much away. The story starts out with the famous Flight 19 the disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle and really caught my attention. The Eclipse is an amazing ship and the best thing to send into this situation. Of course I was hoping everything would work out but this is the first book in a series and you are left with a great cliff hanger.
I will be honest, there was part in the beginning that was dragging a little but stick with it, there is a point and purpose. This is a great story and I can’t wait to get my little grubby fingers on the next book. Make sure to check it out!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
Infinity’s Gateway is a wild ride. It takes a what-if approach to one of the great mysteries of Earth, and suddenly you have more questions than answers. The author has done his research, and the reader learns about all kinds of things as the story unfolds. It takes awhile for the hero to become apparent, but the wait is so worth it. This tale isn’t going to be told within the confines of just one book. The story took the place of all things mundane it’s final chapters, as this reader couldn’t put it down!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! I treasure Science Fiction that’s neither zombie nor post apocalyptic. The characters were substantial and believable. The plot was not a fantasy, but built on an understandable premise. Very much a fun read!!
Such a fun read! I've always been fascinated by the Bermuda triangle and this perspective and take on what it could all be about is refreshing and fun, and at times very very tense! Monsters and mystery and intrigue, the trifecta!
This is such a great story. The Bermuda Triangle has always intrigued me and this author has written such a gripping page turner surrounding this mystery. The characters are so true to life and I really love the strong female characters.
