Deadly Enterprise is the second book in the Mike Stoneman thriller series, about a pair of New York Police Department Detectives. I read the first, Righteous Assassin, earlier this year, and enjoyed it, but you could easily read this one as a stand-alone, as there is enough of a recap of previous events from the first book - but you would then be spoiled for the outcome of that story if you decided to go back to it.
I actually liked this one even better than the first as the characters have matured and the well paced plot relies on suspense about their fate rather than obligatory twists. I received a free copy from Reedsy in exchange for an honest review.

Set a few months after the events of Righteous Assassin, Mike is undergoing rehab following his shoulder injury, and enjoying his blossoming relationship with Michelle the lovely Medical Examiner. His partner Jason Dickson is temporarily paired with a new Detective, arrogant and impulsive Ray, who makes him appreciate Mike so much more. When a young woman washes up dead of an overdose, the top brass are not interested, wanting them to focus instead on the murder of a local shopkeeper, because it’s causing political issues and racial tensions. However Michelle suspects that other young women have died in the same way, and persuades Mike to look into it unofficially, drawing him into the web of a prostitution ring run by a shady cop with mob ties...

Chapman has written a believable and very readable thriller, sensibly moving on from the serial killer plot line of the first book to a more typical murder investigation but with plenty of complications to keep it interesting. I liked the way the relationship between Mike and Jason has evolved, even when they’re not working together, as well as Mike’s loyalty towards his former partner Darren. The fact that he also has to endure months of painful physical therapy felt realistic too - so many heroes seem to bounce right back into the next case after being shot, which never rings true.

The departmental politics were another indication that the author knows his way around a police department but they didn’t overshadow the plot. Touches of humour lightened the tone - like the grumbling of a police force deprived of their donuts because of a rat infestation! It’s well written, the action is easy to follow, and it’s much less gruesome than the first book, with no gratuitous violence or sex, and the language was true to life. I also really liked the cover image which sets the tone perfectly. Recommended for fans of the Harry Bosch series, but with a definite New York flavour, Deadly Enterprise is published on December 2nd.

A jogger finds a young woman’s body floating in the East River and at first glance, the woman’s death appears to be drowning after a heroin overdose. But everything isn’t as it seems and the ME, Michelle McNiell, has her suspicions. Suspicions that are enough for Mike Stoneman, still undergoing physio from a stab wound, to get involved in the case.
Not willing to relegate the young woman’s death to misadventure by a druggie, Mike, his usual partner Detective Jason Dickson and Michelle take on the case and find instances of other girls dying in similar circumstances. As the case surrounding the young woman’s death takes a sinister turn, Detective Dickson is under pressure to solve the murder of a bodega owner.
This is a stellar follow up to the first Mike Stoneman book, Righteous Assassin. The pacing is perfect and the character interactions are authentic and entertaining. Stoneman is an engaging character. I particularly enjoyed his relationship with Michelle; it adds another layer to the story. With a tight plotline and plenty of action, this is indeed an excellent crime thriller. Can’t wait to read more of Stoneman’s cases. Highly recommend!

Another Great Mike Stoneman Novel!

What a suspenseful and gripping story in Deadly Enterprise by Kevin Chapman. I've read book one in the Mike Stoneman series. Mike is a detective with the NYPD. The books can be read separately, as each is a standalone, but to really get the feel for Stoneman, read the one that came before this one first. Sometimes, murders fall through the cracks, especially when no one cares or misses the victim. The other side of town, with the darkness that lingers from the street walkers, and the lost citizens of the city. I really enjoyed this story, and I love Chapman's writing style and his way of showing the story. Stoneman is hot on the trail, with his partner in tow. I am a definite fan of this author! Whatever this author writes, I want to read. The characters had a lot of depth and were very realistic. The story brings the reader on a superb journey. This is a magnificent story that kept this reader turning the pages. A definite attention grabber, so much I couldn't put it down. Both thrilling and intriguing, all the way to the end. Very impressive story telling. Magnetic! I will definitely add more of this author's books to my bookshelf. Deadly Enterprise is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.

NYPD follows the open cases of a racially-charged murder uptown and a floater in the East River. The former was interesting given the events of George Floyd during the week I read this. This book follows some weeks after the events of the first, and Stoneman is in PT for the injuries sustained there.

Besides Mike Stoneman and Jason Dickson, who we met in Righteous Assassin, we meet Ray and Darren, Jason's interim partner while Mike is on medical leave and Mike's former partner who was injured in the line of duty. It was also nice to see an Internal Affairs cop written as more than just a stereotype. Enjoyed the amusing sideline story of cops without donuts due to the rats in the precinct.

Two very interesting plots, with well-written characters and some personal favorite NYC landmarks. Appreciated the old and new with Nom Wah Tea Parlor and Vessel making an appearance. A solid series, and was glad to know the author was working on book 3 so that I didn't have to worry about Stoneman's survival.

(Won this book on GoodReads). Fast paced who done it. It has all the angles, corruption, thrills, disappointment, and a woman who is bound determined to prove her sister was murdered when all arrows point to and overdose. The characters were likeable and relatable. A good sold read and easy to follow.

This is a fast-paced, action packed crime story that is certainly worth reading. Although I really hate to read about corrupt cops, I do think that a few exist and those stories seem to have especial intrigue and excitement. Mike makes a great detective and Jason matches well as his partner ... I even liked Sully. I hope to see them again soon.

Another strong opener in the Mike Stoneman series. Chapman did it again with this hook, line and sinker!

A young woman ends up in the East river with a needle mark in her arm. On the other side of town, a bodega owner is stabbed to death while locking up his shop.

Are these deaths linked?

Detective Mike Stoneman thinks they are, and his team sets off to find answers.

I really enjoyed book one and I will admit, a book that strong is hard to follow. But Chapman did a great job keeping the pace quick with crimes that kept the story interesting. Stoneman’s relationship with both his girlfriend and new partner have grown tremendously and it was both heartbreaking and disappointing to watch his old partner, Darren, fall down such a troubled path.

Great book with action, betrayal, and thrills. Recommend to any crime fic lovers!

Several months ago, I had the opportunity to read and review the first book in this five-book series, Righteous Assassin. I was impressed with the author’s depth of research and craft in deftly working within the narrow tropes of the serial killer police procedural to create a high-stakes, page-turning, still-something-new narrative featuring well-rendered characters and an interesting villain.
I closed the review with my hope that future books would further illuminate the tough, veteran detective that is the hero of the novels, Mike Stoneman, and Chapman does not disappoint.
In this second novel, the serial killer is replaced by a set of shadowy rogue cops who are operating a drug and prostitution ring out of a seedy hotel. This, the author tells us at novel’s end, is based on a true story where the ringleader was generating two million dollars a year from a similar operation.
If you have seen The Batman, you know that crooked cops are another trope of which readers and viewers never get tired. Even more so than corrupt politicians, dishonest cops are a vile bunch, right up there with pedophile kindergarten teachers or child-porn-watching high school principals. We expect politicians to be loathsome; cops, not so much (although there has to be a caveat in the era of #BlackLivesMatter).
Speaking of race, Mike’s partner, who was a newly promoted detective in Righteous Assassin, is African American and there are tensions surrounding the role that race played in his swift promotion. Mike is one of the most vocal when it comes to pointed accusations throughout the first novel, although he and Jason have a bonding experience in the final act that makes him rethink his assessment. Both Mike and Jason mature in the sequel, as does their relationship, as Mike undergoes rehab for a wound to the shoulder sustained in the first novel and Jason works with a temporary partner on a case that just might be connected to the drug and sex ring.
As the narrative unfolds, we (re-)meet a supporting cast of somewhat stock characters (necessary in a police procedural), including an attractive medical examiner (whom Mike is dating), a seasoned, persistent New York Times crime reporter, the commissioner, the precinct captain (Irish, of course—and a Sullivan, also of course), the mayor, and investigators from the FBI and Internal Affairs. There are also the rogue cops, who would be perfectly portrayed in the film version by James Remar and Philip Bosco if it were the nineties.
Central to the story is Mike’s former partner, wounded in the line of duty—an incident for which Mike blames himself. His former partner’s typical Italian-American family serves to humanize Mike even further. There is also the committed sister of a drug overdose victim who journeys to New York determined to bring those responsible for her sister’s death to justice. Last, there is a Jamaican female police officer in the records department that adds a bit of levity to the narrative while also playing a crucial role in the solving of the case. She also serves to illuminate a lighter side of Jason during their interactions.
To say anything else would give the plot away. If you enjoyed Righteous Assassin, then the deeper dive into Mike’s past and what makes him tick as it were is well worth the ride. There are several references to the first book, as the sequel happens within four months of the end of the first.
Mike’s adventure in the third book takes place on a cruise ship, where he and Michelle are trying to relax. Sound familiar? This is another trope that we also love in action films, especially the beloved (and now must-watch-on-Christmas) first Die Hard film. Trouble follows the heroes of these stories wherever they go, and it will be interesting to see how Mike behaves away from his familiar stomping grounds.

I won a copy of “Deadly Enterprise” through a Goodreads giveaway.
Plot summaries are available in reviews here on Goodreads and on Amazon, so I will not write one here, but simply leave my impressions of the police novel.
A great part of the early chapters are used to set up the plot line of the Investigation into The mysterious death of a young prostitute found floating in the river. Mysterious because the medical examiner found only one needle mark on her body and a few bruises. Mysterious also because she had been in jail but released by unknown authority. Her murder gets little police attention because of a high profile murder of a bodega owner ( Hispanic black) by a white thug. Detective Mike Stoneman is involved with both cases. He was the hero of book one into the series, but his background in sketched in in this one showing why he is finishing up rehab of a shoulder wounded in the climax of the story in book one. All part of the introductory set up.
Ther is quite a bit of the personal life of Stoneman, his current relationship with a female medical examiner, his feelings of guilt that his previous partner was severely wounded in the shootout at Stoneman’s side. A lot of inside office rivalries , politics and police chatter get a bit excessive, I thought. Stoneman’s and his girlfriend’s relationship problems were not of importance to the plot.
Lots of donut chomping though, almost to the. point of parody.
The plot mechanism of using the sister of the murdered prostitute as in undercover decoy streetwalker did not strike me as not likely to happen.
However the climatic confrontation between cops and bad guys was exciting enough to keep this book in the three star ratings.
Some violence, no sex. About 50 pages of excitement out of 325.

This is the first Mike Stoneman book that I've read, but its the second in the series of thrillers.

Without going into the plot too much, when 'another' dead prostitute turns up, this time in the river, Mike Stoneman and his fellow cops are not ready to accept that it’s yet another accident.

The main character is, as you would expect, a tough but fair cop, but is well written and there are enough quirks thrown in to keep the reader from getting bored. Having lost his old partner to a gunshot wound, Mike ends up with a new guy and he has to break him in the only way he knows how, but can he trust him?
In the background, Mike is helping his partner come to terms with an injury that could keep him out of commission for some time, and yet another friend who was left in worse condition, losing his job. Relationships take time to form, and to trust someone new with your life is difficult. Without being absolutely sure of his new partner, Mike must decide if he can get to the truth of just why these women are dying, while helping a woman with the loss of her sister.
Despite the heavy storyline, there are snippets of humor that prevents the story from getting bogged down in emotion. The station is under the control of the exterminators and the vermin’s presence means that donuts are off the cards for this precinct.
Not only the donuts are missing. This novel has a theme of loss running through it. The loss of health, the loss of a sister and the loss of the comfort of a solid partnership. The losses are each competently handles until they are resolved either one way or another.
You do not need to have read the first book; this book will stand alone quite informatively. This is a solid novel, and deserves to have a wide audience, the characters are well drawn, and the storyline is well woven.

"Deadly Enterprise", by Kevin G. Chapman is heart racing, can't put down crime thriller. What does one do when they've uncovered a multi-million dollar drug and prostitution ring at your workplace; that being -the NYPD? When you are Mike Stoneman, you move forward with uncovering the truth. Along with his partner, Jason Dickson; they will uncover the truth even at the risk of losing their jobs and ruining their reputation. The reader will realize the plot early on. You can visualize traveling to New York City and other places that they visit in this book. Allowing us to have more of a personal experience . Giving the reader an awareness of the tension that Stoneman and Jason encountered as they were uncovering a world of corruption, murder, drugs, prostitution, and politics along with how deep into the higher brackets of the workplace and the city that the corruption goes. The reader will enjoy the side story of McNeill and Stoneman's romance continuing to evolve. Stoneman, Dixon, and McNeil walk in a very gray area as far as the law goes in their investigation of the corruption. Chapman's writing method allows his readers to have insight of the tension growing among his characters. Right up til the end and then he pulls it all together; as if tying your shoelaces. You can read this alone, but I would recommend you read Righteous Assassin first. Either way; you'll be happy you've read Chapman's books. I won an autographed copy of this book in a Kevin G. Chapman giveaway in exchange for an honest review. #KevinGChapman, #AmazonPublishing

It's been awhile since I've picked up a crime mystery/thriller, and this one dances right through the traditional setting of police, detectives, crime rings and all of those enticing sort of things. In other words, it was a real treat to sink into this type of tale again. And I haven't read the first book in this series, but that didn't cause any issues when I grabbed up this one.

After taking down a well-known killer, Mike Stoneman is on leave as he tries to recover from the injuries the case left him with. His partner, however, is digging into a death everyone wants filed away, claiming it's unimportant. but the more the two dig, the clearer it becomes that someone is sweeping evidence away. Not only are their reputations at risk, but their opponent may be deadlier than they first thought...and closer to home, too.

The first scene hooks and makes it clear the stakes are high, and this knowledge lurks in the background as the tension increases through the rest of the pages. The reader is well aware of why and how the victim died, but that doesn't ruin the mystery. Another side crime swings in, twisting the entire into an ever tightening weave. Some of the turns are predictable, which makes the unexpected ones that much more thrilling. The criminals seem to always stay a step ahead of the detectives, making it hard to put this one down.

In this second installment of the Mike Stoneman series, Mike is in rehab for his shoulder after his near fatal encounter with the serial killer, Ronald Randall, when a dead female drug-addict is pulled out of the river. Everyone assumes it's just another overdose victim until Mike's medical examiner girlfriend, Michelle, notices inconsistencies. She wants him to pursue the case, but the high-profile and politically sensitive killing of a local bodega owner in Brooklyn takes precedence. That is until the young woman's sister shows up and complicates things.

This is a very tight and face-paced thriller that is definitely a page-turner. Though I have not read the first book in the series yet, this story can stand on it's own as the author has provided us with just the right amount of backstory to get us on track. I liked that the relationship between Mike and Michelle was depicted as a mature one and without any drama. Having lived in New York in a previous life, the description of the locale and New Yorkers was spot on. I did wonder why there were no female detectives in Mike's precinct as I know they do exist. There was also a nice balance of good cops trying to do the right thing, and ones who take advantage of the power and privilege they possess. In other words, they were human and not caricatures or superheroes.

Kudos to Mr. Chapman for a job well done.

This book is immensely enjoyable. The narrative flows effortlessly, making it a highly readable experience. The characters are well-developed, with rich backstories that add depth to the plot. The suspense builds steadily, keeping the reader thoroughly engaged with twists and turns that keep the story dynamic and evolving from chapter to chapter. The pacing is well-balanced, maintaining a good rhythm throughout the book. The narrative cleverly intertwines two seemingly unrelated plots: Mike, fresh out of rehab after a near-fatal encounter with a serial killer, is drawn into two separate cases. First, a woman is pulled from the river in what appears to be an accidental drowning, though the Medical Examiner and Mike’s lover suspect otherwise. Meanwhile, a high-profile murder of a local bodega owner takes precedence, complicating matters due to its political sensitivity. Both cases unfold separately but in equally gripping ways, holding the reader's attention with two equally compelling mysteries. As Mike and his team delve into both leading to an exciting and satisfying convergence of the two storylines. The result is a definite page-turner, with suspense and intrigue on every page. The book's twists, strong character development, and expert plotting make it an exciting read from start to finish.

Policemen recovering from injuries discover corruption within their ranks - 4.5 stars

Mike Stoneman is a detective who was wounded on duty. During his recovery, he tries to stay in touch with his buddies. His former partner is unlikely to gain full recovery from his gunshot wound. Mike is feeling guilty that he did not do enough for his ex-partner but is anxious to get back on the streets.

In New York City, there is often something nefarious going on; it isn't long before Mike finds out about a young woman whose body was found floating (a floater) in the East River. Mike's girlfriend who happens to be a medical examiner finds some things about the body that don't add up.

Jump ahead to learn that the information that Mike has requested from police records is lost and that more files go missing. Mike gingerly asks internal affairs to act as a sounding board and becomes confident that there is a mole in the police department.

The sister of the dead woman interjects herself in an unconventional manner turning a doing-it-by-the-book approach into something that might be ginned up for TV. When the dust settles, more police are found to be tainted and Mike has to explain his actions -- you should be the judge.

Deadly Enterprise by Kevin G. Chapman is a gripping, fast-paced police thriller that keeps readers engaged from start to finish. Chapman continues the story of NYPD Homicide detective Mike Stoneman, who, alongside his partner Jason Dickson, investigates the mysterious death of a young woman pulled from the East River.

The novel excels in procedural detail, suspense, and character depth. Chapman’s ability to craft high-stakes investigations, combined with the moral and professional dilemmas faced by his detectives, creates a compelling narrative. Fans of crime thrillers and series like Harry Bosch will appreciate the tight plotting, authentic law enforcement perspective, and the escalating tension that drives the story.

Overall, Deadly Enterprise is an excellent continuation of the Mike Stoneman series, balancing complex investigations, suspense, and well-developed characters. Chapman demonstrates his skill in delivering thrilling, realistic, and emotionally engaging crime fiction.

Mike Stoneman is a true hero, fighting through his injury and rehab to make sure that justice is done. Michelle McNeill, the medical examiner and girlfriend of Mike, sees a crime where police bosses want to ignore the facts. She encourages Mike to pursue the case even when he is told to stand down. The book reveals much about the crime that Mike doesn't know and keeps the reader glued to the plot, waiting for Mike's detective skills to uncover what happened and what is continuing to happen in the New York underworld. Death and tragedy strikes, and there is much heartache and guilt in the story. Mike is all too human, but this fills him with determination and a willingness to go against his superiors to get the job done. There is a little romance between Mike and Michelle, just enough to keep their relationship interesting. The book has something for everyone. I loved it!

Detectives Mike Stoneman and his partner Jason Dickson just could not quit investigating a presumed suicide that Medical Examiner Michelle McNeill thinks is suspicious. That’s just the tip of the iceberg of all the action in Deadly Enterprise. Following Chapman’s first book, Righteous Assassin, in the timeline and characters, the author did not lose one bit of momentum. Action-packed, with exceptionally interesting and well-thought-out characters, make this second in the Mike Stoneman Thriller series another edge-of-your-seat read. I loved every page and I loved the very last pages which only prove that sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. I’m certainly going to be watching for the third in this series. Chapman is on a roll and I don’t expect him to stop any time soon.

A girl is found dead in the river. Her death is considered an overdose and nobody wanted to spend longer on the case than absolutely necessary. To them, it was an open and shut case. The only one who took notice of her death was the medical examiner. She insists that somebody do something to investigate the case. She feels that the girl was murdered. Nobody really takes her too seriously until another body is discovered with the same consistencies as the first.
I actually really did enjoy this book more than I thought I would. I mean I didn't love it, but I really enjoyed it. It was much better than the first book in this series. It's easier to read. The characters were much more lively in the book. There were many parts where the book still felt a bit stale. Which is why I enjoyed it but didn't love it. There is a major character adjustment in one of the detectives. I can honestly say that it really helped me enjoy the book a lot better as well. This book didn't read like a Criminal Minds episode as much as the first book did either.
This book was also narrated by the narrator. I'm beginning to think that the first book was the first book he ever narrated. If I'm wrong, it's not meant as an insult. Just an observation. He seems to have found his niche a bit more with this one. He comes off more comfortable and less unsure of himself. It was really nice to hear. I'm curious to see if he's going to narrate other books. Maybe some more of his own. Maybe some of others. It would be nice to see how he does.
I enjoyed this book a lot more than I did in the first book. I might consider giving both of them a chance again in the future because of it. Sometimes I really feel like I'm being overly critical when I don't like books. However, I realize that we aren't going to love every book we come across. I am curious to see if there will be more books in this series. I wonder where they will go. My curiosity on it all definitely feels like a sign to me. It's an enjoyable read that I fully recommend to crime lovers out there.

There’s two types of mysteries, the cozy neighborhood “who done it” and the hard boiled, gritty, boots-to-the-street kind. I love the latter, which “Deadly Enterprise” DEFINITELY is. We follow the good guys, Examiner Michelle McNeil as she gives a lead to Detective (love interest) Mike Stoneman. Wit and intuition tells Michelle that a possible accidental death isn’t exactly what it seems, and only Mike is willing to look into it. The only catch, he’s also juggling a high profile murder case with another partner, Ray McMillian. Between the pages of the plot we learn that there’s more that meets the eye where ever Mike and Ray go. Corruption, greed and monstrous acts have weaves their way into the city, and only Mike’s hard nose and toughness can help uncover it.

This is a 'no-spoilers' review.
'Deadly Enterprise' is the second book in the Mike Stoneman series, so there are references to book1 in it, but they in no way hinder the enjoyment of a reader who hasn't read its predecessor.
So, Deadly Enterprise stands by itself as a very classy crime novel written by an author who knows his craft well.
I enjoyed following the placing of the jigsaw pieces as the team get to grips with some very unsavoury scoundrels. Do they get their come uppance? You'll have to get a copy and find out!
Top job.

Jason gets center stage while Mike is out with a busted wing. He has shown himself to be a competent detective. There are two stories here, maybe connected, maybe not. The first is a prostitute found floating in the river, who apparently died of an overdose of heroin. Apparently being the operative word. The other is a shop keeper who is apparently murdered by a gang. The evidence leads Jason and Mike (You know he won't be left out) to massive corruption in the NYPD.

Mike is Back

Book 1 was good. This book 2 is better. Mike is trying to recover as Jason is working without him. But something about an apparent OD victim hitting the river and drowning feels off. Mike gets pulled back into policing early as he and Jason push the limits to solve the case. Excellent action and tension. I especially like the humanity of this one. Stoneman shows off some real good guy tendencies as he goes off in a badass way.

I enjoyed this second book in the "Mike Stoneman Thriller" series. Kevin G. Chapman has written an action-packed novel, featuring two NYPD detectives, Mike Stoneman and his partner, Jason Dickson, that I found entertaining. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Kevin G. Chapman's narration was fine and kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily posted this review.
