Joan Walsh Anglund was an American poet and children's book author and illustrator, with more than 120 books that have sold over 50 million copies around the world in 17 languages.
I came across and consequently read this slim volume of poems yesterday in the library. They were all brief, but filled with beauty and wisdom.
There were also tiny illustrations drawn by the author, and I recognized her style and realized that one of Joan Walsh Anglund's paintings has been hanging in my sister's room for as long as I can remember! (Though for a long time we shared a room, so it hung in my room too, so to speak.)
Like I've said many times before: magical things happen when you browse the nonfiction section at the library.
The untitled poems in this collection often seem like quotations or statements written in verse. They are brief, ranging from a couple lines to about a dozen at most. Each poem is accompanied by tiny illustrations on the opposite page. Some appeal more than others.
I loved this so much! It reads more like series of quotes then lengthy poetry, but it is dripping with meaning and wisdom. It holds truth in its words and my god is it beautiful!
A quick read - tiny, thoughtful, crisply-worded poems spaced across pages like the pauses and rushes of phrases, placed beside even tinier ink drawings. It is pleasant, although I don't know how much it will stay with you.
