“This is a compelling David-and -Goliath Story of our lifetime that should be told to girls in primary and high school, colleges and universities as well as in politics and the corporate world” - VYTJIE MENTOR, former ANC MP and Caucus Chair
"It became very clear to me that the womb that carried out our democracy was no longer capable of nurturing its children. The mother of our democracy was ruining its children's future without cause. The womb that carried our democracy is both capable to give life and to abort it. The womb that carried democracy has aborted its own seed and buried it alive..."
In the book, Nomawele is a 21 year old with dreams, full of hope and ambitions. In 1994, she was still very young to vote with SOUTH Africans for the first time in history. But because history was made that day, kids grew up with hope. They believed in this ANC, they believed that they can be anything they want, (Parents also told them this) and everyone was looking forward to better life for all.
When she finished school, all she ever wanted was to be part and contribute to the growth of the nation hence her dream was to be part of government employees to be able to make a difference in this country. As per her wish, she was appointed an intern - Administrative Assistant and within 6 months being an intern, Goliath and David from Bible story repeated itself.
"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power" - Abraham Lincoln. Mbulelo Goniwe, the Chief Whip of the ANC Parliamentary Caucus based in Cape Town in 2006 became Goliath. "I was standing in the door while he was under his blankets.'Welekazi, ndifuna undigade, ndifuna mna nawe kube khona into esiyenzayo ngoku.' I could not believe what I was hearing from an old man old enough to be my late father."' Though Nomawele escaped physically and sexually unharmed, she felt her dignity was compromised. She felt violated and stripped naked as she was sold even by some women to this old man. She was disgusted and afraid that if she left this unreported, more would come so she reported the incident. But before reporting, she thought the Chief Whip would do an honorable thing and just apologize and realise his mistake but the big headed Mbulelo Goniwe used his power of office to threaten the child. But what he failed to know was that Nomawele was not any ordinary child so she went ahead and reported the matter. That was her sin. Who was she to take on the big guys? Who the hell she thought she was? A girl from the bundus, did she know who they were?
She was reduculed, colleagues and friends detached from her. What was sad was when some women even helped Goniwe to get what he wanted. From the plan to sleep with Nomawele to the Disciplinary hearings.
Big names are mentioned in this story and it is sad that most of these people are our leaders. They are ruthless, they would do anything to get what they want. They would do anything to protect another comrade and it does not matter the scars they leave with the young children. When I saw Gwede Mantashe's name, I was hopeful, but haibo ANC is filthy and they don't care a damn. This is a story of a young, strong willed woman. She fought and was never intimidated but like the title says, she was arboted by the very same democracy we made noise celebrating in 1994.
Thank you, Nomawele. You won, South Africa knows you won. Yes, Goniwe was settled with over a R-million and you were left in the cold, but you won. We have seen many reporting these stories, you are one of those who planted the seed. Yes, you wanted to make a difference and contribute towards the success of the country, that you did by fighting back, by not allowing a man to use his power of over you. You had a voice, even how tiny it was, but you used it and that's the best contribution one could ever do. Goniwe might have won financially and politically, but in the deepest of his heart, he will never forget you.
