The in-your-face go-to skincare guide from mega-influencer Lauryn Evarts Bosstick, founder of the Skinny Confidential brand.
Foreword by Dr. Dennis Gross
The Skinny Confidential’s Get the F*ck Out of the Sun is the practical, yet incredibly fun and accessible, preventative skincare bible by lifestyle guru Lauryn Evarts Bosstick.
We all have our ever-growing list of skincare What products are essential for a nightly routine? Will a jade roller actually take care of hungover, puffy eyes? Why is sunscreen so important, and does it really need to be applied every day? What oils and serums are best for glowy, dewy supermodel skin? Lauryn dives into all this and more with a voice reminiscent of a friend at a boozy mimosa brunch who has a little more experience (and a lot more research) under her belt.
From product and beauty tool recommendations to Lauryn’s personal experience with facial massage, fillers, Botox, lymphatic drainage, and cryotherapy, this authoritative and cheeky book is essential for a DIY generation that’s all about shaking up old ideas about skin care and transforming the beauty industry.
Lauryn interviews other top influencers such as Kristin Cavallari, Patrick Starrr, the Summer Fridays’ cofounders, Shea Marie, Chriselle Lim, Jillian Michaels, Stassi Schroeder, Aimee Song, the Ladygang, Mandy Madden Kelley, Amelia Gray, Delilah Belle, Bobbi Brown, and Justin Anderson, and skin-care doctors and mavens including Dr. Dennis Gross, Dr. Jason Diamond, Sonya Dakar, Georgia Louise, and Dr. Barbara Sturm, to get real-deal insider tips and tricks, making this book the go-to resource for preventative skincare with the signature pink Skinny Confidential spin.
This is exactly what my obsessed with skincare (& the skinny confidential)-self needed.. although my bank account would’ve been fine without it 😅 I will reference this one & all of my notes from it for life!
As a long-time fan of The Skinny Confidential podcast, this book was on the top of my self-help books to read. But unfortunately, I wasn't a fan.
While I appreciate the commitment of interviewing some of the most popular influencers on skincare, I feel like there was so much contradictory information, but also gave more attention to the opinions of unqualified people rather than the facts from professionals.
I found it interesting, but I would’ve preferred more professional information to back up the opinions of the people who were interviewed. I don't feel like I took much away from this read, something I was very disappointed about.
This book felt like reading a magazine with several celebrity and influencer interviews. While it was a fun, unique read, the actual information was very contradictory and mostly uneducated advice and opinions.
OMG do not waste your time on this book! Wow SMH 🤦🏼♀️ ! Its just opinions of influencers and celebrities on products they like. Some have great advice and others have uneducated advice that I would never recommend. If your not already educated in skincare you have little chance in figuring it all out.
I really wanted this book to get a higher rating. The audiobook is narrated by the author and it was honestly like listening to a friend talk about skincare while we had coffee. She’s peppy and friendly. And the material is very motivational! I’ve actually started experimenting more with my routine since starting this. Also, the author’s tips are gold. She knows what she’s talking about.
That said, the tips from the experts she interviewed are a mixed bag (which make up probably more than 50% of the book). There is a lot of talk about the vague notions of “clean “ and “toxins” but these aren’t clearly defined which is a shame because everything else is defined like I’m five. And I got very upset at the constant flow of contradictions. Everyone has different things that work but don’t expect me to think you are giving me value when one expert contradicts the author or other interviewees. In a later section one “expert “ says to watch out for fruits and vegetables and stick to low glycemic foods. The literal next “expert “ says to eat lots of fruits and vegetables of many varieties. The lack of consensus is extremely bothersome.
But I do still recommend this. Just take it with a healthy dose of research on the side. 3.5 stars
I found this book to be very informative and there are many things I want to implement from it in my life. While there were a lot of contradicting opinions everyone is different and some things may work for one person but not the next.
Listened to this one on Audible, which I think was such a great decision! It felt like Lauryn doing one super long podcast, and it was nice to hear her voice walk through everything. It would be nice to have a physical copy for later, easy reference. Lots of good tips that range from simple to super extra.
This was really interesting!!! I will say, it was a little poorly organized. Some of the interviews jumped around and it might have been an easier read to split the contents of some of the interviews. Only about 65% of the book was applicable to my own life, but I’m sure I’ll reference back to it as time goes on.
This book is somewhat entertaining in that it can be interesting to hear how women care for their skin and there are many pictures of beautiful women. Don’t expect to get any solid advice from this book. It’s mostly influencers and business owners of beauty products. There is some good information (like wear sunscreen) but you have to sift through a lot of bad advice to find it. It’s better to go see a qualified esthetician or dermatologist to know what’s best for you.
Actually couldn’t read this. It’s a coffee table book not a book. She’s not a derm so I didn’t believe her but I learned a few small things Extra stat because pretty pictures
If you're interested in getting into skincare, give it a whirl. I'm a skin dunce and picked up some good tips and products to research and try. If you're already into skincare, I doubt you'd learn anything new. 🤷♀️
Edit: I came back to add what I thought was key for me — there were a number of surprisingly cheap or free tips which was refreshing coming from a book chock-full of influencers and beauty industry professionals. Some of these include drinking lots of water, staying the fuck out of the sun, wearing a big hat, and the most surprising to me, the Wim Hof Method of taking cold showers everyday.
This is my preventive skincare bible. I love how Lauryn wrote the book as if she was talking to a friend & it felt like it was another TSC podcast episode on steroids. As much as I enjoyed hearing tips/tricks from so many celebs/influencers, there were so many contradictions between other people’s recommendations so it was hard to decide what information I felt made sense for me. I also wish there was some more professionals featured because it would feel more credible and would help clear up any of the contradictions made by influencers. Overall, my book is filled with post it notes so definitely a go-to resource!
Listened to this one on Audible to get back into the habit of listening to books on tape. Ofc there was no one better to start with than the ice queen herself. This book is packed with skincare tips and tricks and I even purchased a few of the Summer Friday’s products recommended in the book. As someone who struggled with acne a lot as a teenager, this book would have changed my life if it had existed back then. The audio book is narrated by Lauryn which elevates the entire listening experience. It’s a no brainer that I loved this one - fans of Lauryn and TSC should add to their shelves immediately.
I listened to the audiobook, and I absolutely loved Lauryn's book! It was filled with valuable information about taking better care of my skin and being proactive. I learned so much from various credible resources, along with Lauryn's personal experiences. I've already made many changes to my skin care routine and will continue to refer to this book for years to come! From now on, I will be sure to apply my eye cream with my ring finger, put moisturizer on before my oil, and always pat my serums, moisturizers, and oils into my skin instead of rubbing them in. Most importantly, I will ALWAYS wear my SPF! I truly enjoyed reading this book and loved Lauryn's narration! 🧖🏽♀️🧴✨
It had a lot of great tips (such as Vit C serum in morning, retinol at night, moisturize both, take everything to thetits, ice rolling) but I agree with others, SO much contradictory content, which I understand just is the beauty/health industry in general. I also felt like it was very repetitive. She just wanted to get any and every celebrity to answer the EXACT same 10 questions and just plop it in a book. Having said all that, I love Lauryn, her podcast, and I’m still glad I read this book. It at least looks cute on my shelf.
I trust Lauryn Evarts Bosstick with anything and everything involving skin care and this book explains why. She took the time to create a book that hits every topic under the sun ;) and keeps you laughing through it all. It's a book that I will continue to flip through anytime I need to refresh my skincare and I suggest everyone I know read this book <3
This book was an interesting collection of skincare tips, tricks, and the advice of experts in the skincare industry. It also featured interviews with different celebrities asking about their personal skincare routines.
It was a lot of repetitive advice but advice that certainly was worth repeating! I enjoyed reading it!
Great message to avoid sun exposure. My problem with the book: Multiple times in this book does the author and other “experts” talk about products and treatments that actually shrink your pores. Your pores do not actually shrink. Your pores can appear to look smaller, but do not shrink. Very misleading.
Pretty dense! It’s a good refresher on all things skin and beauty from someone who collects a LOT of research. I appreciate the focus on preventative care and the bold language choices that keep me engaged.
This is my new bible of skincare and will be used as a reference manual for years to come. Looking forward to your next book just please make the font larger for us 40/50 year olds who can’t see anything anymore.
Took me 45 mins to “skim” through this book. This is totally for upper, inner circle group chat book, so many testimonials from celebrities or wannabes. Give a rating so to tell others no point to read a topic that you can just get 5000 times more useful info searching google.
I absolutely loved this audiobook. Lauryn is great and even though I'm happy with my skin care routine, I feel like I've learnt lots more from listening to this book. I'm definitely going to check out her podcast and also buy the hardback version of this book so I can keep looking back in it.
It was a difficult read as about half of the font color is in hot pink and was hard to see. A black color would have made it much easier to read. Some of the information was contradictory and some of it I just don't believe.
Super unique perspective for writing about skincare !! The author has asked many women, whom I imagine are influencers and invested in their skincare, numerous questions about their favorite products, their routine, etc. it was super fun to read and I definitely want to try a few new products 🙌.
