What an amazing wrap up to the Astrid story arc in this incredible series. These books are now well below my youngest daughters reading level. But she loves them so much. She read for 20 minutes 5 days most weeks and a book in this series use to take her 10-12 days to read. This one she read in under three sittings over 2 days. And she has insisted that we pre-order the next volume Bloom of the Flower Dragon, and was disappointed that there is not an announced 22nd volume yet. I have said it before and I state it again, This series gets better and better. It has massive staying power. And in this volume we get a tiny surprise! This is book 20 but we have reread a few of the volumes, making it the 30th time we have read a book in the series. As a family we eagerly await the new volumes that have been announced. And this volume returns to the illustrator Graham Howells. However, we should return to this volume.

The description of this volume is:

“Drake and Rori rush off to find a Wind Dragon-the final dragon needed to undo the False Life spell. But they soon learn that the Wind Dragon is being held captive! Can they rescue her and her Dragon Master, Quilla? They'll need to hurry because evil wizard Astrid has already cast her terrible spell... Prepare for the Dragon Masters' biggest battle yet! With engaging black-and-white artwork on every page, kids won't be able to put down this action-packed book!”

This story picks up immediately following the previous one. My daughter reads through the chapter titles before beginning, and guesses what might happen. The chapters this time are:

Find the Wind Dragon
A Wind Dragon!
Queen Amaru
Capture the Dragons!
On the Mountain
The Glowing Bones
The Tenebrex Stone
Into the Fortress
Bones of the Beasts
Lost and Found
Beasts, Attack!
Dragons vs. Beasts
The Magic of the Tenebrex
A Sister’s Plea
A Visitor

This story is action packed. And in some ways the action races from start to just before the finish. Drake his dragon Worm, Dragon masters and Dragon friends, and the council of wizards must all work together this time, to have a chance to defeat Astrid. Previous battles have not gone well against her. And this story has a lot of surprises in store for the readers. But to find out what happens you will need to pick up this book and give it a read.

These books are great for young readers, and those who read to and with them. I admit I could not wait to find out what was going to happen and finished the book on a coffee break at work, while my daughter was at school. (But we will keep that between us, right!) My daughter adores these books and often rereads them to herself. And that is the highest praise I can give these book!

This is a great read in a wonderful series. Maybe the best yet!

I really liked this book because there was a ginormous battle at the end and I love how the main villain can take the Dragon's powers and also use them

This is a cute story of good vs evil and team work. It would be good for students just starting to read chapter books.

We are so into these books, this on has been pre-ordered for months. The excitement when it arrived was real and when we finally got to read it - well it was worth the wait.

This book is the culmination of the adventure that began back in Fortress of the Stone Dragon: A Branches Book, and has been going on for a few books. It was very exciting and engaging for both my now 6 year old and 3 year old. They are already looking forward to the NEXT book (because they saw it on the back) and have fully integrated plot points into their daily play. Thanks Tracey West for such a fantastic series.

We got this huge buildup over three books of trying to prevent Astrid from using this false life spell, but then she does it and all it does is make these bones come alive and since they are literally just bones they don't appear to be a problem at all for the dragons to fight and defeat. How was this so threatening to begin with? I think it's fun that dinosaurs were weaved into the story since I imagine there is a good overlap between kids that like dinosaurs and dragons, but the whole fight sequence was incredibly anticlimactic. Again, why was it a good idea to let loose a bunch of "bad" wizards? This whole Astrid storyline was kind of weird.

I picked this up without seeing the number in the series. It is #20 which was probably a bad place to start. The Dragon master stories obviously build upon each other and this one felt like it might have picked up mid-stream from #19. Not hard to follow other than a lot of characters and no character development. The story was interesting and I can see this series making for a great kids show. It was very fast paced and simply worded. I can see why it appeals to the 1st grade kids and why they so desperately want the next book when they bring back the previous one in the series.

My boys (ages 7 and 4) have been waiting for this book to be published and were so excited when it arrived in the mail earlier this month. We all picked right back up into the story line, even though it’s been a few months. Now they are sad the next one won’t be out until April. These books are so good to build a love of reading. The short chapters and pictures on every page make them perfect for new, young readers.

A sweet, little (well... 21 books long), fantasy series for kids. I have no issues recommending this one. It's delightful to see fantasy for kids where the kids DESIRE what is right and don't struggle with it the whole way through. It is black and white in clarity of right and wrong. Plus fun and adventurous to boot. PLUS, adult bonus- you can read any book, which would make more sense in series order, and still enjoy it 😉

One thing I really enjoyed about this book is the emphasis on teamwork. The Dragon Masters have to work together to rescue the wind dragon and defeat Astrid and use their strengths to overcome the challenges they face. It's a great message for young readers about the importance of working together and supporting each other. I also appreciate the attention to detail in world-building. The magic system is well-defined, and the ingredients for the false life spell are unique and intriguing. The descriptions of the dragon and their abilities are also well-done, making it easy to picture the action and imagine the world the characters inhabit. I recommend this book to young readers who enjoy fantasy and adventure. It's a quick, engaging read with likable characters, exciting action, and a positive message about teamwork and friendship.

I bought this series for my 6 year old who’s a beginner reader because he’s obsessed with dragons. I have to say I’m disappointed though, there are way too many characters to keep track of, the book comsist of conversations mainly between the characters and the writing is poorly done. Trying to have my son learn how to read from these books has been difficult with all the grammar errors. I will say it’s pretty easy for him to read since there aren’t really any difficult words

Another Dragon Master book in the books! And there's going to be another one after this one!

I feel like this book had a lot going on with it, and unless you've read the other books you would be very confused. Even having read all the other books, there was still a lot to remember and process.

My 6-year-old still loves them.

Quilla and Wayra are based in Peru in my opinion.

My DD really likes this series. She does complain that they all end in a cliff hanger so you have to wait for the next book to come out to finish the story.

Queen Amaru is terrifying. The illustrations are lovely. Who would have thought a dragon could howl? I like that Eko had a bigger role in this book. Astrid is worse than Maldred by far. Great ending.
