The Didache in Modern English

Rate this book
The Didache is an early Christian Document believed to have been written in the early to mid-second century. It is a handbook for Christian living and church operation, and is a wonderful book to have, to see what the early church taught and thought. Most editions of the Didache are just reprints of copies written in the 1880s. I wanted to change that and make the Didache accessible to everyone, not just people who understand King James English. This is not a new translation. I have taken three public domain versions of the Didache and made a revised version using modern English. I love early church writings, and I hope you find this a useful addition to your library.

What an interesting read. Allegedly written somewhere around the opening of the 2nd century CE, it is the working of an anonymous (I believe) group of the Apostolic Fathers as the first catechism. It was delightfully straightforward and functioned as a Rile of Life.
Great emphasis was placed on treating each other as we ought to treat people…revolutionary concept (although it is these days). It demonstrates my long held belief that there are few truly new ideas just changing cultures. There was something really refreshing reading this ancient document

Underwhelming, but not his fault

I had learned some time ago of the Didache. I guess I built it up in my mind as something that would answer questions and make clear Christian life.
It did, sort of. But there was very little that wasn't already in the Gospels. So, in that respect, it was a tad disappointing but still interesting. I did get a bit of sense, from the chapters, about what it was like to live then. The book , I found, felt different, more personal than the Epistles. That could just be me and my failings as a Christian. But where Paul really is super preachy, this book feels more like your Dad telling you what's what. It felt personal. In that respect, I was glad to have read this.

The author made the book an easy read. It is very short. It took a out 15 minutes to read.
If your looking to read this to gain some insight and direction, I'd recommend it. But it certainly isn't a life changing book. I guess that no surprise. After all, it wasn't included in the New Testament. I'll say this: it's a hundred times more enlightening than Paul's Philemon letter

How does one rate a book like the Didache, one of the earliest writings of the Church. The Didache is a very short collection of lessons on the Christian life. A lot of it is taken from the Bible itself. The first several lessons are basic guidelines of how Christians should live versus how evil persons live. Then there are a few lessons on baptism and the Eucharist, then some on how to treat various Christians who travel and want to stay with you. I chose this translation as it was a modern English one, and most of the others I saw were done in King James English and so harder to read.

A primer of the Christian Faith

The Didache is an ancient writing (see Steve’s explanation) that most of us have never read (and maybe never heard of) but it is the primer of how to live your faith out loud. Steve has done a wonderful job in turning these writings into an understandable and accessible book.

Easy to read.

It's so important for Christians to read the writings of the early church, but these works can be very challenging to read because of the Old English and wording. This work allows the reader to read an early work in a manner that's easy to understand.

Short but sweet

A reiteration of Jesus's words for modern times. A simple book of instruction for most people, not just the religious.

awesome Catechism material

I wish my pastor gave my catechism clas this to read in our 3rd year. Incredible summary of the faith and how to live out one’s faith.
On item which Ned’s a little bit of a massage, in chapter 2, the grammar is a bit awkward in the English and needs a bit of a massage. The sentences in the second paragraph are a bit of run on, and seem like incomplete. . Other than that, an excellent work! Every Christian should read this short, simple book
