Tommy & Evelyn Christie #3

Murder in the Churchyard

Rate this book
Downton Abbey crossed with Murder, She Wrote...set in a Yorkshire village!

When the body of Isolde Newley's long lost husband is found in the grounds of St Augustus churchyard, suspicion falls on Isolde and everyone close to her - especially her new love interest, the dashing Dr Mainwaring.

The mystery is exacerbated by the largest snowfall seen in North Yorkshire for years. No one can get in - or out - of the village.

It will take all of Tommy & Evelyn Christie's sleuthing powers to clear their friends and find the murderer before the police arrive from York.

If you enjoy the glamour of bygone eras like 1920s Downton Abbey and gentle, cozy mysteries set in the English countryside then you will love this new series.

1920s British Village Cozy Mystery
This book is the third in a series and it can be enjoyed without reading the other books. This story is set post WW1 in a small English village. Our sleuths are a newly minted Lord and Lady who are still getting used to their new roles. There are some particularly interesting characters in this book. This story definitely keeps the reader on her toes! The reader is given all of the clues, and yet the denouement is surprising. I have read the entire series and can't wait for the next book to be published.

An entertaining and fast mystery read set in the 1920s. Tommy and Evelyn are at it again, putting their lord and lady of the manor aside briefly to help out in a murder investigation. This time in the tiny village near the castle.

I love Tommy and Evelyn. They have great banter but also, at times, the realistic tensions, arguments and makeups as any marriage. The side characters are a strong point of this series. Though some are seen in this book, I didn't feel that they were on screen that much, but there is only so much you can do in a short novel. There were a lot more introduction to other people who live in the village so it isn't just the castle that star as backdrop for this series.

A satisfying mystery, though nothing that will hugely surprise you, and good characters. The recipe for a good cozy (and this actually doesn't have any recipes, imagine that?).

I received this one from Booksirens and it was perfect for the Set in an abbey, monastery, or other religious house square on the r/CozyMystery Book Bingo (only 2 more squares left to finish!)

Tommy and wife Evelyn find themselves in another murder investigation when the disliked ex-husband of one of the villagers is found dead in the churchyard. Due to a snowstorm, the police are unable to get to the village and put Tommy, a Lord, in charge of preserving the scene until they can get there. Having already solved a few cases themselves, Tommy and Evelyn begin to investigate, mindful that one of their many friends and neighbors is guilty of murder.

This is the first book I've read in the series, so I can safely say this can be read as a standalone. I love a good historical mystery and this was an easy and quick read at only 130 pages. I loved the setting in 1920s Yorkshire and there were several social issues highlighted; one character is a WWI veteran with PTSD, another is an impoverished war widow and I felt that added a lot of realism to the story as the villagers were still rebuilding their lives after the hardships during the war.

As for the investigation and apprehending the culprit, there wasn't a whole lot to do since the village has only a few residents and even fewer had a motive so it was a matter of eliminating suspects until the culprit remains. I did enjoy how Tommy and Evelyn set about questioning people, uncovering a few scandals (boy, those villagers really get around!) and preventing more murders.

Overall, this was an enjoyable book and I'll be looking at picking up the other books in the series.

I'll admit I don't usually read cozy mystery series where civilian characters just happen to keep running into murders to solve. However, after I tried one book in this series, hearing which supporting characters would be at the center of this next book got me interested.

Besides, novellas are a big draw for me.

Although I wound up feeling disappointed in the supporting characters in question, I like Tommy and Evelyn as the sleuthing team of leads. While I don't think emotional chemistry between them really comes alive on the page, they've got a good story going as a couple.

What most struck me about this postwar setting is the stark reality of a society now dealing with a shortage of young men, and men who are still alive but severely damaged seem to have been forgotten by the country they fought for.

I enjoyed most of the read, though the transitions are sometimes awkward or abrupt, seeming to miss a few beats or details that would give them a clearer/smoother flow. The writing is sharp and insightful at times but caricatural and a little melodramatic at others. While the preceding book has such a redemptive ending, I feel the ending of this one is tainted. Also, the book is sometimes repetitive, and the frequent grammar and punctuation errors were somewhat distracting for me, but as I read an advance copy, hopefully the errors have since been corrected.

Some fellow ChristFic fans may also want a story with something more redemptive to it, but fans of historical cozies in general may really like this one.

I think Murder in the Churchyard is my favourite of the series so far! This historical cozy is the third in the series and takes place in North Yorkshire 1922. I really like the detective duo in this series. Tommy is the new Earl of Northmoor and a former policeman. Evelyn is his wife and was a policewoman during the war. I love reading about their adjustments to their new position in society and the village.

I loved that the village was cut off by a heavy snowfall that caused the telephone lines to go down. The isolated mystery is one of my favourite tropes. A body is found in the graveyard on Sunday morning and Tommy and Evelyn must do what they can to find the murderer as the police are unable to get through.

4.5*

It was so nice to get back to North Yorkshire! But who knew the little village of Hessleham was SO full of naughty people?! Besides the dead body in the snowy churchyard, the pages start filling up with an assortment of thieves and bullies and adulterers. Tommy and Evelyn. Lord and Lady Northmoor, feel an obligation to investigate these suspicious characters in order to keep the rest of the village safe until the police can arrive. With phone lines down and roads impassable, that could be a while...

I like the easy banter between Tommy and Evelyn, and the realistic tension as they struggle to start a family. The physical and emotional injuries that linger after WWI also give this story a ring of truth. I wonder where I'd fit in the village caste system in 1922...or where I'd want to! Being Lady of the Manor sure has its responsibilities AND dangers! I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't go to bed without knowing "who dun it."

I didn't want to put the book down. Murder in the Churchyard was a lovely continuance of the relationship between Tommy and Evelyn. We see into Evelyn's heart just a little bit more with each book (which I really like) and I enjoy the rapport found in their marriage.
There are elements of Agatha Christie here that are such a joy to come across in a modern author - someone who can write without the seeming need to add gratuitous violence or sex. Thank you for keeping it clean, while still telling a murder mystery story. Nicely done!

First to say that, whilst this is the third book in the series, I have not read any of the earlier books and this was not a problem at all. Murder in the Churchyard works perfectly as a standalone if that's what you want. I actually prefer books written this way as I dislike feeling obligated to purchase every book in a series, regardless of where the price ends up!

This is a lovely cosy mystery based in a Yorkshire village where everyone thinks they know everyone else's business, loves to gossip about it, and then discovers that there was far more going on than they realised. There really is a lot going on in this village. Totally scandalous!
Set shortly after the Great War, there's also a poignant portrayal of life lived in the aftermath, particularly as relates to those who returned to a life that could never quite be the same. There are issues of trauma, of loss, and then social issues such as an unfulfilled desire for children, an abusive relationship, poverty and the lengths people will go to to protect those they love.

Whilst there's a lot going on here, the plot isn't overly complicated by it. It's easy enough to follow along once you get a handle on who is who. There are some really well constructed characters here.

As a Yorkshire Lass myself, I was enamoured with the idea of a story set in my own region which was partly why I decided to read this one when it's not one of my more frequently read genres. I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging I found it and, indeed, I read the whole thing in one day desperate to find out how it all worked out in the end. I did feel it came together just a smidge too rapidly at the end but perhaps that's the true way of such an investigation. I just found myself wanting a little more. Maybe I simply need to read the rest of the series!

Whilst I received a free copy of this book it hasn't influenced my review, which I chose to write in the hope that it might help someone else decide whether this is the book for them.

Another great cozy mystery in the Tommy and Evelyn Christie Mystery series by Catherine Coles! The third book is just as entertaining and intriguing as the first two in the series. Tommy and Evelyn Christie aka Lord and Lady Northmoor are a terrify team and they seem to match each other in solving crimes in their village. I must confess thta Tommy seems a little condescending to his wife at times! He should know by now that Evelyn is perfectly capable of handling any situation that comes along! It is not enough to spoil the book for me though. I liked the winter setting of this volume of the series. Being in the same season is always a plus because I van feel the cold and see the snow and it helps set the stage for the story. The mystery concerns a series of events that happen at a Sunday church service on a snowy e winter morning and once again the schoolteacher Isolde is at the center of the murder. There are plenty of suspects though as the investigation unfolds and will keep the reader guessing until the end and some interesting and surprising twists and turns especially in relationships among the townspeople. One thing i really love about this cozy mystery series is that it is not like a lot of cozies with cookie cuter characters that never change throughout the series. The characters seem realistic to me and some people are truly good and some people are good on the outside but turn out to be rotten to the core. So much more like real life. It is also a good historical mystery for those who are looking for books in the genre especial if you like stories set in the 1920s England. Readers who like cozies but are looking for something different should like this series too, so if you haven't tried it yet, you should! Sure, it is a English country village mystery but in my opinion it is one of the best examples of a cozy goes beyond the standard novels set in an English village.
Thank you to author Catherine Coles, publisher Inspired Press and Book Sirens who gave me a free copy of Murder In The Churchyard as I have reviewed previous books in the series and have an opportunity to share my honest opinion of the book to friends and the public on Goodreads.

Book 3 in the series and another good instalment. It can be read as a standalone also which is a bonus.

I am enjoying the ongoing mysteries for Tommy and Evelyn to get involved with. I love the village setting and it's so easy to visualise the place with the snow backdrop adding to it. I was wondering what could possibly happen in the next book as surely the village couldn't cope with another murder but I see things are moving to London. Can't wait to read what they get caught up in next.

What a tangled mess! It's like a village soap opera with the characters not being honest with anyone Tommy and Evelyn are still trying to adjust to their change in status from private citizen to lord and lady of the manor. It's winter and the roads are too messy for motorcars so Tommy and Evelyn must do what's needed without law enforcement. The publisher's blurb is good so no need to repeat it and spoilers are just rude. I loved it! It's just the right length, too.

This is only 3 books long,so far

I m waiting until April for the next book in this series. The couple, Tommy and Evelyn are married. He is a retired policeman. She worked in the war effort. He is the fourth son in line to inherit a Lordship title, but he was so far down the line he never expected to u a Lord. The characters are well developed and I feel that they are my friends. The mysteries are different and well puzzled out. I think it you will enjoy these boots too. Happy Reading !!!

I grew up reading Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. This novel is a fond reminder of Lord Peter Wimsey. Evelyn and Tommy are fun characters as newly designated lord and lady. Evelyn had been a police woman during WW I and it is hard for her to not investigate the latest murder. She loves the puzzle of a murder even if she does not like the unpleasant human aspect of it.

This is a village murder so we get to enjoy the subtle method of Tommy and Evelyn questioning the villagers, listening to gossip as they probe for the truth. The suspects are people they know so the investigation must be done well, without alienating friends.

I like how Coles explores the personalities of the village characters as secrets are revealed. We learn a bit about the effects of shell shock for those in WW I. We also experience the pleasant husband and wife relationship of Tommy and Evelyn. I like their dialogue and the quips Coles has crafted.

This is a fun novella in the British cozy mystery genre. It makes for a fine read of an evening. While it is part of a series, it does read well on its own.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Book Sirens. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Lord and Lady Northmoor are at it again. A man’s body with a slashed throat has been found in the churchyard. Practically everyone in the village qualifies as a suspect. An unusually large amount of snow has fallen on the village preventing anyone from being able to get in or out. That leaves Tommy and Evelyn to perform the investigation. They soon discover that it is not fun to think of one’s friends as potential murderers.

This is the third book in a series. It is set in England in the 1920s. It is a good cozy mystery that is easily read in one or two settings. It definitely has a Downton Abbey flair as have the two previous books in the series. I enjoyed reading it. The ending was a surprise for me. I had no clue who the murder was or why it was committed until revealed at the end. I am looking forward to the next installment in this series already.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good, clean cozy mystery and/or anyone who is a Downton Abbey fan.

I throughly enjoyed Murder In The Churchyard. It’s wonderfully written with a creative plot that also includes storylines about other characters besides Evelyn & Tommy, for example the vicar’s having problems with his house maid.

I love all the characters, they are warm & life like that you just want to know more about them. I’d like nothing more than to sit in the kitchen at Hessleham Hall and chat with Evelyn, Nora & Mrs O’Connell.

I’m so pleased this is a growing series and long may it last!!! I can’t wait for Murder In Belgrade Square.

I received an ARC from BookSirens in return for an honest review.

I was chuffed to see there will be more installments of this delightful sleuthing couple.

One man passes out during church service, one is found stone-dead in the churchyard, and one took the church money...

The village is snowed in, and it's Tommy & Evelyn Christie who have to find the murderer amongst the villagers before there are more victims.

These cozy mysteries series are written very simple and straightforward, with the focus on dialogue and plot, from which the clues are compiled.

I have fallen in love with this sleughting couple and their banter, and to my delight, there is another installment released coming April. I can hardly wait!

Lord and Lady Northmoor are still getting used to their new title. They were happy as Mr & Mrs Christie, until someone murdered Tommy’s uncle and he inherited the title, as well as solving the murder with his wife, Evelyn.

This is a lovely, light and easy to read whodunnit, with great characterisations, especially the 2 leads. Both had at one time been police officers and Evelyn particularly comes across as extremely perceptive. As I sat reading this whilst it was snowing outside, it made the setting for the murder come alive. Thoroughly good read, I definitely want to read the next one too.

Evelyn is attending church, when a member collapses in the foyer. While attending to him, another member comes in covered in blood. It appears somebody has been murdered in the churchyard. The police are called but a snow storm has hit and the police can't get through. It is up to Tommy and Evelyn to investigate. Due to the snow storm, the killer has to be somebody in village. Join Tommy and Evelyn as they deal with their relationship while investigating the murder.

The country house mystery becomes a country town mystery in this delightful cozy series. The police are kept at bay by a snowstorm, and there are plenty of suspects for the murder of the body found in the churchyard. Tommy and Evelyn Christie are settling nicely into their roles as Lord and Lady of the manor, and dealing with the strains their amateur detective work puts on their marriage. The stories of friends in the community move forward at a steady pace with this third book in the series. Recommended for cold winter nights during Covid.

Murder in the Churchyard is Book 3 in A Tommy and Evelyn Christie Mystery Series. Catherine Coles has written an exciting cozy mystery series. Evelyn and Tommy have another murder on their hands when the estranged husband of the school teacher is found murdered in the churchyard. Isolde is relieved that her husband is dead because she loves the town doctor, Teddy. Evelyn is busy gathering clues and feels that Teddy is being framed. Can she and Teddy solve the murder? I was guessing until the end of the book. Catherine has enjoyable characters and the plot is quick. This is a wonderful series and I hope we have another book in this series. I received an arc for my honest review.
