Victoria Carpenter, a high-ranking government official, is found hanging in her garage – an apparent suicide.
But her husband has another theory – he is convinced she was murdered.
And when the post-mortem results confirm foul play, DCI Jane Phillips and her Major Crimes team find themselves on the hunt for her killer.
As Phillips begins to dig, she realises there are powerful and wealthy people who may have wanted Victoria dead. People who are willing to do whatever it takes to stop her investigation.
In a terrifying case that takes her to the other side of the world and back, Phillips puts her own life on the line as she battles local power-brokers and Hong Kong’s murderous Triads.
Facing corruption and treachery at every turn, can Phillips catch Carpenter’s killer before he disappears forever? Or will she herself fall victim to a deadly betrayal?
Deadly Betrayal – the fourth book in a gripping new detective series featuring DCI Jane Phillips.
Hailing from Yorkshire, OMJ Ryan worked in radio and entertainment for over twenty years, collaborating with household names and accumulating a host of international writing and radio awards. In 2018 he followed his passion to become a full-time novelist, writing stories for people who devour exciting, fast-paced thrillers by the pool, on their commute – or those rare moments of downtime before bed. Owen’s mission is to entertain from the first page to the last.
OMJ Ryan proves that a series can only get better with every installment. Deadly Betrayal was his most addictive outing so far. Travelling these pages is akin to walking along a tightrope. The fab four are back, they are more human than ever, with the fragility of the human condition pulsing at the forefront, demanding attention. Ryan tore up the rulebook and catapulted his readers into the deep underbelly of Hong Kong and how the two countries intermingle in a frenzy before a finale that is likely to have you on edge. The DI Jane Phillips series always feels like a homecoming, its became my favourite crime series by far.
DI Phillips and the gang are back. Both Jane and her Major Crimes Unit are called to investigate the apparent suicide of Victoria Carpenter, a high-ranking government official in the planning department. The opening chapter was like a mallet to the temple, we didn’t know the who or the why, but you knew some serious shit was going down. The tone was set, and the reader felt like a fly on the wall, it was real and vivid, and it broke me out in a sweat.
The investigation is swift, and the action doesn’t stop for a moment. I struggled to keep up with my brain and the rate at which I need to turn the pages. Deadly Betrayal was brutal and raw. Why was Victoria Carpenter found hanging in her garage? The husband is quite insistent that she wouldn’t kill herself, it has to be murder…but who would want to kill a gentle woman…her husband? Another government official? Things aren’t adding up but it’s up to Major Crimes to sift through the evidence with a fine-tooth comb. The grief and the pain were palpable it penetrates through the pages into the reader’s mind.
Deadly Betrayal is a race against time. An investigation that crosses time zones and cultures. The reader is given a little insight into DI Jane Phillips backstory when the investigation takes her to Hong Kong. You feel the oppressive nature, the dark underbelly, and friends aren’t necessarily friends any longer when you go about snooping in places that you shouldn’t be. The neon lights, the crowds and the fear becomes an enemy rather than ally as it has in the past, both her and Jonsey will be lucky to get out of the island alive.
Deadly Betrayal also examines the humanity of these incredible characters. Bov is back in active duty after being injured in the last installment. We see the effects of post traumatic stress disorder and it is manifesting itself as him losing his bottle. Jones is also struggling in his home life. He turns up to work looking tired and bedraggled and the stench of stale alcohol is a lingering presence. Just what has him on edge and tetchy? I loved this aspect of the narrative because we get to see them as a multi layered character, their job isn’t all there is too them. They are people with emotions and problems, just like you and me.
Deadly Betrayal is deliciously dark and gritty, with its brilliantly drawn characters and tightly plotted narrative, it just simply refuses to let go.
Deadly Betrayal is the fourth instalment in the series featuring DCI Jane Phillips of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Crimes Unit. DCI Phillips and her team are called out to investigate when the Deputy Leader of Manchester Councils Planning Department, 39-year-old Victoria Carpenter, is found hanged in the garage of her home; it is deemed a suicide despite the protestations of her husband, Aaron, a chartered surveyor for Shotten Construction Ltd, who refuses to believe the verdict and is adamant his wife was not suicidal and would not have killed herself. Because of his insistence, the body is taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary mortuary for a post-mortem to be carried out by Dr Tanvi Chakrabortty, which ascertains that Victoria was actually murdered. The team now have clarity and so dig deeper into Victoria, including her personal life and her working relationships, but what they discover plumbs dark depths and takes them into the murky, dangerous criminal underworld of the Hong Kong-based Chinese Triads. Can the team bring the murderer to justice without getting themselves killed in the process?
This is an action-packed, compulsive and thoroughly entertaining police procedural, which it had no problem holding my interest right from the start, and the haunting opening chapter had me gripped completely. It moves at rapid-fire pace and is superbly plotted as the team realise the corruption and betrayal they are uncovering may put them in great peril. The methodology the team use to get their information is reflective of real police work as they use a solid mix of interviews, gut instincts and forensic evidence. The fear and tension were palpable in certain nail-biting scenes, and I must admit that putting it down never crossed my mind after I'd obliterated the first chapter; I was just too absorbed by that point. The short, snappy chapters also help build the suspense and keep you reading well into the night. Jane and her team have a great dynamic and Jane herself is believable, relatable and likeable. The icing on the cake has to be that Ryan concludes the book with a bang. Highly recommended.
DCI Jane Phillips and her team are called to investigate an apparent suicide of a high-ranking woman. Her husband insists that it's murder ... and the medical examiner agrees with him.
So who wanted her dead? Maybe her husband? Her lover .. after all she was pregnant and it wasn't her husbands? Someone more powerful who wanted her out of the way?
The investigation takes Phillips and her team from London to Hong Kong in search for a man who might know the truth. But at what cost?
This is a complex plot filled with corruption and betrayal at every turn. Is there no one willing .. or able .. to speak the truth. Someone is willing to do anything ... anything at all to protect those secrets and lies. Lots of twists and turns swirl around deftly drawn characters that lead to a surprising .. and explosive ... conclusion. Although this is 4th in the series, it is easily read as a stand alone.
Many thanks to the author / Inkubator Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Deadly Good! O.M.J. Ryan's latest DCI Jane book is every part a compelling & thrilling read! This is only the fourth book in the series & with every new book the series grows taking it to newer & more thrilling heights. I feel the thrills every time I read a book from this series & that is very rare! I've come to love every character on Jane's team especially Bov! Its been a great experience to see Jane & team work their way through one puzzling case after next. If I can, I avoid books with organized crime as a theme but with Jane & team being familiar characters I was curious about the book. Super happy I did( not that there would be a time I say no to reading a book from this series). I loved reading about Jane's experiences in Hong Kong. With most books I've come to expect those highly creepy & chilling parts at the end, but this one had those moments all throughout which made this my absolute fav till now! Can't wait for the next! Thank you NetGalley, Inkubator Books & Owen Ryan for an arc!
"Now she wondered if she had been spared each of those times because her fate was to die in the place where she had been born: Hong Kong."

DCI Phillips and her men were being rushed into closing the grim murder case quickly, which involved a high-ranking victim by their ever self-serving Cheif Suprindentent Fox, who would climb over any dead body to get where she wanted to go without any solace for the victims, to the top brass chair. This story was a real nail-biter DCI Phillips and her men had it hard from England to Beijing China, and back again to England, with links to the Chinese Mafia making their job most deadly with heads literally falling at their sides. Death was staring them directly in their faces, but DCI Phillips and her men were more than up to the challenge, personal problems aside.👍👍👍👍👍
I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of Deadly Betrayal, the fourth novel to feature DCI Jane Phillips of the Greater Manchester Police.
When Deputy Head of Manchester’s Planning Department, Victoria Carpenter, is found hanged in her garage it is believed to be suicide. Her husband refuses to accept that verdict, saying it’s something she would never do and the post-mortem vindicates his position, she was murdered. Jane and the team find themselves in danger as they battle corruption linked to the triads.
I thoroughly enjoyed Deadly Betrayal, which is an action packed read that held my attention from start to finish. I like the mixture of science based evidence, interviews and hard won experience that lead them to a murderer and a corrupt plot with international tentacles. I also like the emphasis on having enough proof to substantiate their conjecture and theorising. It all comes together nicely, but not before some hair raising scenes of physical danger.
I think the novel is well paced and plotted with a steady stream of reveals, matched by disappointments and frustration at their inability to find hard evidence. It isn’t easy to take on a subject matter like the elusive triad gangs but the author manages it with aplomb, painting a vivid picture of their ruthlessness in business and self protection.
I like Jane Phillips and her team as they are close knit and supportive of each other but also very down to earth and relatable. Not everything on the job is sunshine and roses and this is shown in some of the team’s personal struggles. It strikes a nice balance.
Deadly Betrayal is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
I absolutely love this series and Deadly Betrayal is another outstanding addition to it. This can easily be read as a stand-alone, but at the risk of sounding like yet another broken record, I don’t recommend you starting with this one as you would be missing out on reading the other amazing books in the series.
Deadly Betrayal is a gripping read that opens with a chilling first chapter and sets up the tone for the rest of the story perfectly. From there it moves at breakneck speed and had me furiously flicking the pages on my Kindle, resulting in me reading this in one sitting. I just could not get enough of it!
For DCI Jane Phillips latest case, we see her and the team investigating the death of Victoria Carpenter, a government official, in what looks to be a suicide. But as Jane and the team dig deeper, it becomes apparent quite quickly that this is not a suicide at all and what is uncovered opens up one big giant can of worms of corruption and treachery, that has Jane and her team risking their lives to take down the killer, before they strike again.
Another great book in this series. Jane and her team work hard, despite personal issues, when the husband of an apparent suicide victim insists that she would never kill herself. This is fairly quickly confirmed by the post mortem. What initially appears to be a tenuous link with the criminal underworld in Chinatown in Manchester gains more credence as the book goes on. Fast paced and well thought out, I enjoyed this book and read it practically in one sitting. Thanks to Net Galley for the Arc of a box set of the first 4 books of this series. I read them within a few days which was quite an undertaking because of the nature of the gritty crime novels. Unfortunately these books are time limited. I did enjoy all 4 , but would have read them in separate time periods if possible.... I'm a little binged out with the Manchester crime scene at the moment . I definitely hope to catch up with Jane and her team again in the future
Once again, this author has produced another compelling read involving local politics, fraud and links to Triad gangs and a corporation from Hong Kong. It's another thrilling story which feels so real as we get to see the procedural elements of the investigation as usual and suffer the same frustrations and questions that the team face. It almost feels like you're there with them.
I like the personal elements included also as it makes the team feel more like family. It's enough to kepe you interested while never being too much or taking anything away from the main story. I thought the Triad element was a bit over the top in this story though so not my usual 5 star rating. Nevertheless, still a terrific book.
*thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review* So, let's just start by saying that it was a decent read. But it was just that, decent, like it was supposed to be a thriller but it felt a little boring regarding this aspect. The murderer was revealed from the beginning, it was just a game of cat and mouse, also, the author tried to add in a little bit of personal drama to each of the police team, but that was kind of filler Content, just to give the book a little bit of an emotional side. It wasn't hard to finish, but not the best read out there.
This has got to be my favorite in the series so far. Totally original, fast paced, full of twists and turns, and it kept me guessing. And I cared. All the best signs of a great book. We're getting to know our characters more and more, eachnbook, they're starting to feel human,, and like old friends. I had a lot to do today or I would have never put my kindle down. As it was I still only took a few hours to read it considering I started it this morning, and II was been busy most of the day. So at this time my fave, but I still have 2 more books in this series to go. So we shall see won't we!!! 😊
I loved the book and can’t wait to see where the series goes from here.
Victoria Carpenter was found dead in an apparent suicide. Her husband thinks she was murdered and due to the position that Carpenter held in the local political scene, DCI Jane Phillips and her team are assigned to find out the truth.
Phillips will learn that Victoria may have held secrets that someone didn’t want to be divulged, and they were willing to kill to keep them hidden. Will she uncover the truth and solve the case?
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Another excellent book in the Deadly series of novels about Detective Jane Phillips. One of those books that you just can't put down. It is action packed and reasonably techie but not outrageously so making it much more like real life. And I loved the clever and rather amusing twist at the end lol. Highly recommended if you like a fast paced, action packed techie thriller. Can't wait for the next one.
Awe poor Jane is always in the wars, seems she's constantly getting knocked unconscious! A great story taking Jane and Jonesy all the way to Hong Kong in the search of the murderer of a local planning officer. Pretty gruesome what happens there with the Triads. We find Bov suffering from PTSD and Jonesy having marital problems; all in a day's life for the team. Exciting conclusion, well done Owen. BP Sheffield.
This is a Police Mystery/Suspense, and this is the fourth book in the Detective Jane Phillips series. I love the characters in this book. I did not love the storyline in this book. I just could not get totally into the story/case that was going on in this book. I did love all the Police work in this book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
A really good addition to the series with a great storyline that had you gripped. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series . I also liked the fact it was based in Manchester as I’m from there and know places that were mentioned in the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator books for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review
I enjoyed continuing with this group of "coppers" and their investigations and personal lives. The plot here was a bit predictable with just a few twists and turns. I really like the series.
It only took so long to read because I kept falling asleep at night without even trying to read a book.
COYER # 2 Read a book with a red item on the cover. (coat).
I'm really enjoying this series but to me this book although I enjoyed also annoyed me in parts. I felt that at times Jane puts herself and her team in unnecessary danger especially near the end and just wondering after all the broken noses whatever happened to her glasses lol.
Finished reading the four books. They were very intriguing and I hope to read the next books in the series. They have everything in it such as suspense, intrigue, murder, serial killers, great police work and twists and turns. The plots were interesting and had me reading until the very ending. If you love suspense with mystery then you will love these books.
Another great Jane Phillips book! This case had high and low moments for me. Where the story really drew me in was all the character development. Bov dealing with PTSD. Jonesy and his wife. Jane and beginning to feel alone. And just Entwistle continuing to be his great self. The gang plot line was intense but the case wasn’t as interesting. Which the team more than made up for!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
OMJ Ryan has written a superb book that adds a different vibe to his Jane Phillips series. His plotting is spot on but complex. I hope this isn’t the end of his series with Jane Phillips.
I have enjoyed every book in this series! The books are well written and I love all the characters . They are well developed and seem like people you would like to know. The stories are exciting to the very end.
First time reading this author & found this an O.K. read but too British in the writing & expressions for my taste. Suspenseful with a good wrap up but just not my cup of tea. Thanks to NetGalley & Inkubator Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I only recently found this author, the books are based in Manchester and I find I can easily see these things happening. Easy to picture when you know the city. Can't wait for the next one
Great read full of twists. A woman is found hanging at home, her husband vows she didn't kill herself. DCI Jane Phillips and the pathologist finds she was murdered but the truth takes them to Hong Kong and is a lot deeper. Will definitely read more with Jane Phillips.
In chasing a murderer Phillips and Jones get a grip abroad and nearly don't come back. They get into further bother and the team arrest and charge the perpetrators of several murders.
Another great read from OMJ Ryan and DCI Jane Philips and her close knit team. Great mix of local and international politics and criminal activity, with plenty of twists and turns!! Looking forward to the next Book already!!
