A day trip to Hampton Court Palace. The former home of King Henry VIII. It was all going so well until they stumbled across the body…

July 1903: The villagers of Moreton-on-Thames are on their annual day out. And Connie is excited. It will be the first time she officially walks out with Sergeant Cooper … and she wants it to be perfect.

The plan is simple. Visit the gardens first before going to the palace. But when they find the body of a man lying in the centre of the maze, a knife wound in his back, no one can deny its murder.

As Sergeant Cooper takes charge of the early investigation, Eliza and Connie are left to begin their own search for the killer. But with the identity of the victim a mystery, their task looks impossible.

With witnesses and suspects determined to mislead, they soon find they have more questions than answers. And with the killer determined to keep his secret, can they track him down before anyone else gets hurt?

Val is an accidental author! She started writing in 2010 when she realised the family history research she was working on would make a great story.

That story ultimately turned into The Ambition & Destiny Series, a five part series with a short story prequel.

By the time that was complete, Val had developed a taste for writing and began a series of historical cozy mysteries - Eliza Thomson Investigates.

Prior to writing, Val trained as a scientist and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years. In 2012, she set up her own consultancy business, and currently splits her time between business and writing.

Born and raised in Liverpool (UK), Val now lives in Cheshire with her husband, two daughters and a cat. In addition to family history, her interests include rock music and Liverpool Football Club.

Hampton Court Palace which is the former home
of King Henry VIII is where Dr Archie Thompson
his wife Eliza and Eliza’s best friend, the widow,
Mrs Connie Appleton plus Sergeant Cooper are
heading for a day outing. This is Connie’s first
stepping out time with Sergeant Cooper.
They decide to take in the Palace’s Garden Maze
before heading inside the Palace.
The timeline for the story occurs in July 1903.
While enjoying the maze and trying to find the
center, they hear a scream. One of the ladies
on the tour has found a dead body. The man
has been stabbed.
I found the story to have as many twists, turns
and dead ends as the Palace Maze. This is a
very puzzling murder mystery.
I enjoyed this intriguing, interesting, captivating
historical fiction mystery which offers the reader
a choice pool of suspects.
This is book # 7 in the Eliza Thomson
Investigates Mysteries Series. It can be read
as a stand alone.
I volunteered to read The Palace Murder.
Thanks to the author for the opportunity.
My opinion is voluntary and my own.

Never, ever disappointed in the series of these books! You really need to read the series about Eliza and her family who put up with her adventures with the local police and Scotland Yard on helping to solve murders. Not only does she have her family involved but her best friend,Connie and the locals if need be. Seems where there's murder Eliza finds it. Adventures, funny and solving the murder, when Eliza is on the case, she will get it done!! Can be read out of order if need be ,but if you can read in order it's better!! VL McBeath is a top writer and as you read she has you right there in the story helping to solve these murders and you become part of the family!! As you read this story and others she has written, you begin to know the main characters that always appear in her
stories and you get to know her neighborhood, the neighbors and as you follow her through all the murder adventures you begin to feel like you live in the neighborhood yourself and not only that you find yourself trying to help Eliza solve these challenges of following her leads to find the murderer..she faces the challenge of being a woman, being a woman detective,as she sees herself, takes place in the early 1900's,England, and what is acceptable for a woman to do and not to do,but Eliza is a modern woman of this era and being a woman is not going to stop her from doing what she wants to do or has to do to solve the murders she comes across. Her family, her husband is the main doctor in this small little town where everyone knows everything and everyone sometimes that's good and then not so. Right along with his wife he gets to help her as much as he can and knows his wife has a mind of her own and will do what she wants but in this time,1900's, how do I say this, get his permission when need be for her to go on her own at times with her best friend Connie.. This is a time when women didn't just take off on their own,it looks so much better if you have a escort, that was the tradition in this time. Eliza would have her father, her son,Henry who is studying to follow in his father's footsteps in doctoring ,Connie, who is her best friend and her husband.Sometimes she would even have the Inspector or the Sergeant as escorts.. Eliza, her job at home was to fill the prescriptions for her husband the doctor and then fit in solving murders. The local police have learned to tolerate Eliza when she gets involved but not only that, they have learned to work with her, or is it Eliza works with them..Eliza really hasn't given them much of a choice,lol.. Now you know somewhat of the characters that are in the story and if you continue to read this series of books, you will become part of the neighborhood and family but that's talent that Val McBeath has done when you become the story also! Enjoy, you will be excited to find out what Eliza and the family come across next! Believe you me you will thank me and yourself for finding not only the story but the author,Val McBeath!!

Hampton Court Palace the former Estate of King Henry VIII is where Eliza & Connie have decided to take Dr. Archie Thompson & Sergeant Cooper for a day outing. This would be the first outing Eliza’s best friend, the widow, Ms. Connie Appleton will be stepping out with Sergeant Cooper.
Upon heading to view the palace the couples decide to it would be fun to take in the sights of the Palace’s Garden Maze. This will
While starting to enjoy the maze to get to the center, they hear a scream. Everyone is scrabbling to get to the center of the gardens. One of the ladies from the tour has found a man stabbed to death.
Now it’s up to Inspector Adams, Sergeant Cooper & of course Eliza & Connie to track down the killer.
Just like the garden maze, there are quite a few twists, turns even dead ends thru the puzzling murder mystery. This chapter in Eliza Thomson Investigates has several suspects. To find the true culprit of the crime, the ladies have to dig deep into the victims past. The victim was not a good man. He was into greed, blackmail, & embezzlement. On top of the victim’s crimes Eliza’s own neighbors could be involved in blackmailing the victim.
Read #7 in Eliza Thomson Investigates Series. It’s a short, but well thought out mystery.

McBeath writes this Victorian series well. Two refined ladies of the upper class, adhering to MOST of the strictures of the day, yet very much their own people and forces to be reckoned with. Well, at least Eliza is. I was a bit disappointed this time to see that Connie was quite happy to revert roles now that her relationship with the good Seargeant is evolving. Thank goodness Eliza is having none of that!

There's a dead body discovered during what should have been an enjoyable afternoon. There's a murderer to unmask. There's no time for wondering "what will he think?"

Eliza always manages to be one step ahead of the authorities, and I must admit one step ahead of me as well. A great read; like me, you won't want to put it down. I highly recommend it!

I was thrilled to receive my ARC and spend a few days reading a great book. As usual I was immersed in the interaction of the characters and the dialogue. I felt as if I was once again an onlooker at the events unfolding in Moreton. I was puzzled as to who could have murdered Mr. Hobson who was supposed to be such a nice man. With Eliza allowed to officially help the local constabulary this time, she uncovers what lies beneath the facade and leads to way to the culprit. The side story of the relationship between Connie and Sergeant Cooper is developed and also shows what the role of a wife was thought to be in those times. Such an enjoyable read and had my husband asking “what time are you going to put the bedside lamp out?” on a couple of occasions. Really looking forward to the next in series. An honest review for an honestly great book.

A church outing turns deadly when the one of the church group finds a dead body in the maze of the palace gardens. Naturally Mrs. Thomson and Mrs. Appleton are keen to help investigate especially as they were at the scene shortly after the deed was done. The two along with a little help from Henry and some minor objections from Archie set out to get to the bottom of a rather tricky little mystery. The two are quite good at getting information that passes by the Inspector and Sergeant from Scotland Yard. I dare say the Inspector finds their help welcome though he’d be reluctant to admit it. A fun historical mystery set in a cozy little English village. A very enjoyable and lighthearted mystery read. A great addition to the series.
I received an ARC from the author. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.

Book 6: The Palace Murder

I love this turn of the century series of murder mysteries. Eliza’s character shows the struggles of the early days of the women’s rights’ movement without being argumentative and combative.

I recommend this well-written and well-edited, clean, and fun whodunit. There are plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing, and second guessing, the identity of the villain. It is no wonder there were so many suspects to consider. The victim was not a nice man.

I have followed this series from the beginning and anxiously await the next book’s release.

I received an advance reader copy of “The Palace Murder” from the author. This gift did not affect my review of the book. This review is my voluntary and honest opinion.

On her first outing with Sarg. Cooper, Connie is as nervous as can be despite her friend Eliza and her husband going alone. They plan a nice day looking at a local palace. When they find a murdered man in the maze Eliza and Connie are on it and start investigating the mystery man. This book had a lot of red herrings. It took to the end to figure it out. That’s what I like best about this authors book. Most you figure it out after a few chapters. This book was original in plot and story. It was exciting watching these women investigate. This time with help from some new characters. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a good mystery set in 1903 before DNA and fingerprints.

Murder at the Palace solved by ladies again.

Eliza and Connie are ladies of the upper middle class and love near Hampton Court Palace in 1902. They are very much aware of the suffrage movement, and sparingly do things without consulting the men in their lives. On a character and outing arranged by the church their day at Hampton Court palace is cut short by a murder. It just happens that there is a police sergeant on the trip and he organised help from local police and an Inspector from Scotland Yard.
This is a well written book and there are mysteries within mysteries in the plot. Well worth reading.

The PALACE MURDER.
.....V.L.McBeath
Eliza is in state of nerves, about her friend Connie, finally going over to see her. As was Connie, awaiting the Sergeant to come , it would be their first outing. A stroll through the gardens was planned, but coming upon a murder in the maze was not. Soon the two women are back investigating, the list of who was the killer was long. A nice clean flowing mystery, in an era with woman right’s. .Enjoyable and well done.

I absolutely love this series ! Eliza is such a great character, she struggles being a woman in the early 1900’s before women could vote and a lot of other things. To be able to investigate like she does is amazing. She’s very smart and perceptive. V L keeps you guessing and even second or maybe even third guessing whodunit!! The victim definitely wasn’t a good guy, therefore there were many suspects. If you like whodunnit mysteries then this is a book, well series for ya.

I received this as an arc and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Another good mystery with Eliza. I enjoy this look at women at the turn of the century. It's always fun to see how Eliza deals with the social aspects of the times and how women are supposed to act. I love that she doesn't let men walk all over her or just dismiss her as being a woman. The mystery is always good and the characters are wonderful. This time a murder occurs on a church outing to a local palace. Lots of suspects and plenty of questions. And Connie and Sgt. Cooper are finally walking out!
I received a free copy of this book voluntarily chose to review it.

Eliza is back in the midst of trouble when Connie and Sergeant Cooper date turns to murder. They find a body in the gardens as they visit the palace.

Soon the girls will do they own investigation despite the mysterious dead body without a name. Will they be able to track down the killer before another victim is found?

Another entertaining historical theme cozy in this series.

I generally enjoy these mild period mysteries and I found the setting of the Hampton Court Maze to be inspired. Mrs Thomson has an incisive intelligence and is particularly good at knowing what questions to ask witnesses and suspects, to reveal what they don't know they know or to put them on the back foot. However, she can be a bit of a bully in a genteel way, and I felt a little sorry for the police officers in particular. I appreciated the unusual range of characters and locations here.

When Eliza and Connie step out for a nice afternoon at the Palace, they stumble across a murder. Connie is there with her new boyfriend, the police captain. He must stay at the palace and he sends her home with Eliza. Eliza notices that there is no murder weapon. She is perfect for helping Scotland Yard with solving murders.
This book is written in the early 1900's setting. It is interesting to follow along with the way things were back then and how far we have come today. I love Ms. McBeath's writing to the time period.

Hampton Court Palace and a murder!

Connie joins Eliza and her husband on her first "stepping out" with Sergeant Cooper for a day outing at Hampton Court Palace. What a perfect way to spend a day! Until the stumble across a body in the maze. Can Eliza identify the body and solve the crime? So many red herrings in this one will keep you guessing until the very end. This series is so much fun and the grounds of the palace sound amazing!

I receive an ARC. This is my honest review.

The capable doctors wife.

I really enjoyed reading your book. My mother was born in 1922 born in Germany . My grandmother
and mother who was three arrived in the US. The way the police put things together was a mix of

surprise even though they centered in a different country.
Maybe your books could center around that era but center around the US police?
Keep up the good work.

I enjoyed this new book in the series very much. I did have a slight problem in the first few pages, but after that it was great. The author seemed to want to add a bit more suspense in thus book, and there were a few more plot twists. As usual, her characters are believable and the regulars are likable. If you enjoy a clean, fun, and exciting read, you will enjoy The Palace Murder.

Excellent

I have now read al seven books in the series and have enjoyed them very much. I liked that the Police Officers respects Mrs. Thomson and Mrs.Appleton as intelligent and reasonable and listened to what they had to say, even though they were women. I also liked Dr.Thomson a lot, he and Mr. Bell also respected the ladies were smart. I wish there were more of this series.

The Palace Murder is a fun period murder mystery with a free spirited doctor’s wife who investigates in her free time. This story is about a dead man that is discovered in a maze during a tour of a palace.

The narrator of the audiobook does a good job.
