The Chain Breaker #3

The Fates of Yoran

Rate this book
When the Fates attack Yoran, the Chain Breaker must fight back.

After establishing an uneasy truce with the constables, Gavin has settled in Yoran to offer protection to his friends and the remaining magical element in the city.

When a job reveals a dangerous new threat in the city, Gavin must take action. This time the target isn’t Gavin, but the city itself. Magic was banished a generation ago, but the Fates have returned. They bring a dark magic Gavin has never seen before—and might be helpless to control.

It will take more than an assassin to stop the Fates.

It will take magic the Chain Breaker barely understands and can’t control.

Really enjoyable third book in the series. More evolving character development which goes some way to explaining questions brought up by the first two while at the same time keeping you interested about the protagonist and the other equally fascinating characters future.
This book had a really good plot which drew me in from start to end. Lots of complex fighting and magic use in one form or another. My kind of book.

Oh my gosh y’all. I highly recommend these books to everyone who enjoys fantasy and likable, solid characters. The MC, Gavin is not a “young boy” but an adult and that’s a big plus for me. I like a little age diversity. I don’t feel like this is super predictable either. There are a couple different baddies so you don’t always know which one might be causing trouble. 5 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book 1 thru 3

I waited til I had read the first three books before I wrote a review because I was too emotional and didn't know what to say. Fantastic characters that I am in love with.
Book 1 details his early life of training to be an assassin. The training was brutal. He had been orphaned and taken into a school with other young orphans; not all were trained to be assassins. Gavin Lorren trained and became known as the Chain Breaker.
Book 2 The Jade Egg. Packed full of all kinds of twists and turns. Who is Gavin? He doesn't even know. He's was used to working jobs in one city and moving on. But now because of magic enchanters and sorcerers he finds himself protecting the city of Yoren and Jessica and his best friend Wrenlow. Home was the Rusty Dragon owned by Jessica. She served ale, food, rooms and musical entertainment on the weekends. All these years he believed deep inside of him he had a store of power. He could call it up to enhance his fighting prowess. Was it magic? And the search begins for the Jade Egg.
Book 3 The Fates of Yoren. The jade egg is desired by many different groups of enchanters, sorcerers and other magickers.
Action picks up in this third book. And so much distrust between factions. A lot of information is withheld so a mystery builds peaking my interest. It's a guessing game for the characters and the reader. I was out of breath several times running in the alleys, roof tops and jumping over fences and garden walls.
Highly recommend this series.

Once again an amazing story. Gavin definitely didn’t expect to encounter magic as it was forbidden. Once you start reading, you’ll be forever lost in the book and don’t want it to end. Received a complementary copy and reviewed because I loved it.

So... On chapter one it already became a struggle and I made the decision to skim read... We are supposed to be reading book about an assassin and or thief... Every SINGLE job they do together they can not seem to SHUT UP! Seriously? What kind of people talk non stop while sneaking in somewhere? It’s freaking ridiculously dumb and frustrating... If the author wants both involved have two chapters talking about them separately.... Mannn some bad writing....

So I continued skim reading.... How do authors not remember their own books? This is the second book in a row where he completely dismisses his previous writing! At the end of the last book he tells Chan Deval the jade egg was destroyed! Now in this book he never told him that but they made an agreement! Holy crap how do you not remember your entire ENDING! If this series wasn’t 12 dollars on kindle I would not recommend it at all geez!

Sooo Anna can handle one of the fates by herself? They have established that they are the most powerful sorcerers... Anna was defeated by Chyan pretty easily in the first book who was supposed to only be an apprentice sorcerer... This writer is just terrible... I mean his story lines have so much potential, he has a good imagination but just drops the ball on remembering his own stories!!!

When Gavin and Wrenlow had come to Yoran they thought their jobs would just entail a few thefts but definitely no magic, since magic was not permitted in the city of Yoran, however all Gavin has encountered since day one is sorcery and magic. In this book he is facing sorcerers once again but this time they are not the usual sorcerers but they are known as The Fates and seem to sway tremendous power. Gavin ends up as usual worried for his friends and the tavern where he is living but in this book he is also worried believe it or not, for the constables who are being targeted by the Fate, and of course for the young enchanters, Zella's group. He faces off the fate many a time, ends up finding their lairs as well as fighting off the smoke monsters which are hounding him. He tries to protect the jade egg who he at first things they are after and his own magically infused sword. He ends up calling for Anna's help and discovers more than he bargained for. I just love this character who is so kind hearted behind his mask of the tough guy. I also love the jam packed action of the chain breaker who seems to be always growing in his powers but now needs to discover who he really is. I am looking forward to our next book maybe we get to know Gavin's history and where he is getting his internal powers from!

I will post this same review for all three books.
I've read the first three books of this series and have decided to stop. Very unusual for me.
Initially, I was inclined to give the first book three stars. It was far too chatty and repeated references to looking inside oneself for strength to meet the various challenges began to grate on me.
I decided to read books 2 and 3 in spite of my initial irritation. My initial annoyances began to fade. References to finding one's strength took on new dimensions and the chatter seemed to diminish (or I became accustomed).
I reassessed my initial rating and will now give it 4 stars. This series is not for me at this stage in my life. I expect that I would have been more amenable to this writing style as a younger man. The story lines are strong and diverse. The challenges are growing in scope and danger and the characters have begun to be better defined. I am sure there are individuals who will find this series quite to their liking.

I received a copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

Gavin Lorren encounters more problems in this third series. This series keeps getting more and more intriguing. While Gavin in becoming more and more convinced that all the problems he has been facing are interconnected, I am becoming more and more convinced he is right. His education and training with Tristan seem to have a definitive goal, but we don’t know what it is. More importantly, neither does Gavin.

The only thing keeping him alive at this point is his intense training, and the help from his friends. At least some of them. This series leaves me wanting more and D.K. Holmberg comes through each time. His characters are interesting, strong and caring. The tale is filled with action, mystery and magic. The quest for Gavin is to discover the who, what, where and how. I look forward to finding out what Gavin will find.

I love this series. I loved this book. There are so many things that are going on but they flow so well together it's impossible to get lost. Gavin is embracing himself and learning to work with others. I just want more! I'm really excited to read the next book, I want to see what new things Gavin is going to learn about his magic. He's accepted he's El'aras now so I can't wait to see what happens next.

I received a free ARC and I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I'm reviewing an ARC copy of this book that I was given for free in exchange for an honest, fair review.

"The Fates of Yoran" is another great addition to the "Chain Breaker series". I'm glad that I got the chance to read this. Gavin once again faces challenges, this time to fight against the fates. This is certainly one of my new favorite fantasy series. The characters remain well written and interesting. The plot is always intriguing and draws you in.

This Series Keeps Getting Better

I am beginning to get attached to these characters. Of course, Gavin is primary and rightly so. The development of his story within the story is becoming more fascinating. The author really is very good at this kind of gradual unveiling of the true substance of a character. I will definitely continue the series.

bringing things together

This third book starts to bring the loose strings from the first two novels together and shows there is a much bigger picture. Gavin truly begins to embrace the source of his power, and just in time to deal with the greatest threats to Yoran he has had to face yet.

more pulp fantasy

Yep, a little pulpy or fantasy light. A good beach read or bridge book if you need something. Entertaining enough to keep it somewhat interesting. Basic character development and world building. Some inane dialogue that’s skimable. Not a lot of depth here. A solid 3 stars.

Puzzle fitter

If you have read the previous books then this will start to answer some of the riddles or unique events tied to our anti hero if you like for a better term. Then you will be gripped from start to finish, and the fact that some of the side characters come to life alot more too. Enjoy readers

Three books into the series and it makes for a great story with a secondary plot line being slowly built up that finally starts to get revealed in this book.

Some really good writing that draws you right into Yoran along with Gavin and associates.

This was better than the last book was Gavin has gotten better learning from his mistakes and being able to control his inner spiritual power. Look forward to the next book to see how much more he learns and how it goes between Anna and him.

Great Story

I can’t help but feel that the Chain Breaker books 1-3 would be better as a single tale. I understand why they’re not- just saying. Anyway #1-3 are a really good tale, I enjoyed the characters and the plot.
Clearly, there is more to come and I look forward to it.

Okay, but repetitive writing style

Story was good but the author seemed to forget he had already written something, or he used the endless repetition to lengthen his story. Ended up skimming past paragraphs that I'd already had to read before

Great read

I very much enjoyed this series. It had suspense as well as a touching story line. I would definitely read another book by this author. It is not the type of book I normally read but I enjoyed it greatly.

Wow, a big step up from the first to. Actually enjoyed this book and couldn’t wait to get back at it during my breaks. No excess banter between characters and just down to business. Now this is what a book should be…captivating.
