Wilde Type

Rate this book
He had awoken something in her the first night they met—a rebirth of hope for irrevocable love, a love so powerful that it canceled out the burden of her pain.

Dr. Alexandra Wilde is brilliant, driven, and wholly dedicated to her profession. Caring for critically ill children has taken her across the globe from Mongolia to Haiti to her current assignment in Gaborone, Botswana. Her life is full of excitement, tragedy, and personal sacrifice with little room for anything or anyone else. She has always welcomed any adventure…except for the one wearing the face of billionaire mining heir and international playboy, Ian Devall. He is arrogant, charming, and utterly disenchanted. However, when circumstances thrust him into her life, she is captivated by a glimpse of his deeper character and drawn into a blazing romance. An ensuing path of self-discovery leads her to reopen the wounds of her past, and she must choose between the life she always imagined…or one she never dreamed was possible.

Dr. Alexandra Wilde meets an enigmatic man in a bar while out for drinks with her friend and colleage, Rox. Although shaken to the core at the incredible pulse of attraction, Alex is certain she will never see the sexy stranger again. Alex has an agenda, however, She is currently in Botswana Africa and working with young children, doing her best to extend their life expectancy. At a foundation meeting, as well as a tour of the pediatric ward where Alex is working, she hopes to attain a grant that will go a long way to helping the children. The last man she expected to see on the tour is Ian Devall, the man that rocked her world.

Despite her professional dedication and integrity, Alex is filled with insecurities and cannot imagine a relationship working for her while she completes her residency and even beyond that. While a relationship between Alex and Ian seems inevitable, fate as it were, there are more profound issues that face the both of them. This wonderful romance vacillates between their self-sacrificing work and their growing attraction. This book strikes a fine balance, especially since Alex is striving to carve out a career for herself.

I love the growth that both Alex and Ian achieved in this story, even if it seemed at cross purposes. All the while, the sensitivity about medical issues that face poor children was woven through the pages of this story, which I think was done quite well. There is a good measure of levity in this book, especially when it comes to pop culture and song lyrics. Wilde Type is an excellent debut novel and the first book in a series. I cannot wait to see what further adventures that Alex and Ian will face and if their love will hold.

Many thanks to Pegasus Books for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Wilde Type is the wild and soothing romance of Alex and Ian in their journey called life.

Synopsis:
Alexandra Wilde is working in Botswana, in the Princess Marina hospital, helping train local pediatricians to care for seriously ill children. Workaholic to boot, she has plans to give the pediatrics ward a boost, only if she had the approval to do so and the required funds.

The Devall foundation has been doing good work for many years now in Botswana, along with running their mining empires. Ian Devall, most eligible bachelor, just happens to be the mysterious stranger who seems to be the one who can give Alex all the professional help she needs.

Review:
This is a profound romance. Go read it. There. That’s the review. Well, I am going to wax poetic about this book for the next few paragraphs and this is a fair warning that this is going to be a long review.

I love books where the future love interests are introduced within the first few pages, and this one had a rather interesting and fun way to introduce them. And when there’s also a Rhodesian Ridgeback pup named McCartney, you know you have picked up a perfect read!
Death served as both a friend and an enemy, delivering comfort to the dying and excruciating heartache to the living.

Dumela everyone! (traditional Setswana greeting…) This is the first book I am reading by H.K. Jacobs and I gotta say the level of compassion and heart that the author brings to the story, through the medical field and the character’s personal lives, their pasts, is nothing short of amazing.

The medical references in daily conversations were so amusing and at once gave a proper feel of the story and its characters. Again, I am going to request y’all to please read the book. Because it does feel like a life-changing one.

The way the author describes a doctor’s day-to-day life is awe-inspiring, and I was glad that it was not always all duty and no fun. Rather, there’s romance and hospital politics, coupled with how it’s not easy seeing death up close almost every day.
She carried the burden of this grief-a grief born of other people’s tragedies-and stuffed it away deep inside a keyless compartment.

This story gave my favourite phrase, a phrase that is perfect for sapiosexuals, I believe. “Mentally sexed you?” Ha! I so need someone like Rox in my life. Rox, who’s Alex’s best friend and partner-in-scrubs. Well, this book truly is sexy, both mentally and physically. *winks in exaggeration*

And did mention the punchlines? They are so on point and hilarious. Followed by the air of intrigue that HK Jacobs creates in the story in between wild safaris, hectic hospital duties, and heartache. Oh, people, y’all don’t know what you’re missing out on. There’s some old-school long-distance romance going on too, or not so old-school. How would I know? Ahem… Sigh!

Throughout the story, the way Ian’s character shapes up, I was thirsting for more. The author amps up the anticipation by keeping the leads meeting up every few months, as and when their work-life permitted. And there was this sweetness and hotness to that expectation of what’s going to happen next! But I was really glad for that ending. The author didn’t keep me hanging.
The ocean’s skies were in his eyes. A sunshine smile…a promise to beguile…even the stars.

This story was so much, whether grappling with who you are and who you want to be, of separating personal from the professional, but with lots of fun and sexy times (it was hot, hot, hot!). The chemistry between Ian and Alex crackles from the very first time they meet. There’s love, pain, longing, so much sorrow and healing that it’s a process to read and absorb the emotions that are in this book.

Even in the midst of all the agony that the medical profession sometimes revolves around, the way the author has written about it, the miracles and the love that she puts into the pages are beautiful. Another thing I loved about the author’s way of writing was the way she inserted pop culture references without actually naming them.

Love, true love, does come around, maybe not always, maybe not immediately, but eventually, it does… Oh, why am I waxing poetic? I am about to start reading book 2, which is releasing tomorrow!

The elaborate storytelling in this book felt like living the life of the characters. There’s plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, but the one at the end, and from a totally unexpected quarter, was indeed special. And the constant “will they, won’t they” gave a constant suspenseful edge to the story.

There, the author said it. This is an epic love story and you have to read it!

P.S. I refuse to believe this is the doctor’s debut novel. Such stellar storytelling sucked me into its orbit and kept me spellbound!

P.P.S. One thing I was really glad about was the author describing how “emotional catharsis gave her (Alex) a hangover.” My mum never believed me, until recently, how terrible the headaches are which I always get after a crying bout.

Exactly what I wanted

This is such a great love story, but more than that, it’s a story about a woman discovering herself and balancing a career, a love life, friends, and family. The destinations were the exact distraction I wanted in 2020, and Alex Wilde is a character you love to love. Treat yourself and buy this!

I just finished Wilde Type. This book is the debut novel by H.K. Jacobs, and it's absolutely fantastic for a first time novel!

First I want to thank the author for sending her book to me in a pink box full of happiness. It was way more then I expected. And H.K. Jacobs - thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will treassure it forever.

The book is about Alexandra Wilde who is on a journey in life, and discovering what it is she actually wants in life. The setting of the book is absolutely magical. It felt like I was there in Africa. Jacobs paints a vivid image and I loved exploring Africa through Alex's eyes.
Jacobs is a physician herself. And that paid off hugely in this book. I loved the corrects terms, correct steps that are taken. And the brutal honesty of being a children's physician.
You could really feel how hard hospital life can. How exhausted Alex was after continues work in a crisis. It felt really real and raw at times.

Alex meets Ian in the beginning, and they fall slowly, but quickly and deeply in love. I don't mean this negatively, but the book has a slow pace. The author takes time to really get you immersed in the different countries, and stages in life where Alex is in. The love story felt real, because there are weeks/months they are seperated because of work. It builts slowly but surely. It's not a ram bam thank you ma'am kind of story.
You really get to feel the choices she makes. The consequenses of those choices. And the pain or happiness they can cause.

I absolutely loved Rox in this book. She is the perfect friend, with great advice and a kind and open heart. I loved seeing her falling in love too.
Even Tim and Beth grew on me. And Alex's her mom is fantastic too.

If you really wanna follow a life story, a story set in how life truly goes, than this is the book for you. I loved the calm pace of it and how vivid the surroundings are painted.

Fantastic debut novel!

I wanted to love Alex and Rox but the big turnoff for me was two medical professionals going to the local watering hole and getting their drink on. I don’t know any doctors or nurses who do that. Yes, I am a medical professional myself. The place for the story is Botswana. Ideally any place would have been fine working with underprivileged babies, but Botswana was not ideal. Yes Botswana is a very poor country, one of the poorest but I think it would be better suited for a book about human trafficking or some sort of credit card scam than pediatrics. If I was a doctor sent there I would be concerned for my safety more than anything else. 😞

Meeting Ian was instantaneous love. Do I believe I’m that? Not really He is so eligible and single that the meeting was strange. For me it was hard to swallow.

Medical procedures and some cases were good as well as accurate. That is why I finished it

This was such an entertaining read. The friendship between Alex and Rox was hilarious and relatable. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times. While the love story between Alex and Ian was romantic but not without interesting conflict and storylines. Great debut by HK Jacobs. Looking forward to more by this author.

This book takes place all over many countries featuring Alex Wilde (compassionate pediatric doctor) and Ian Devall (billionaire playboy) as they fall in love.
I love Ian’s playful banter throughout the book. And how he is able to get Alex to be something more than a worker bee. Rox who was Alex’s best friend was also a really fun side character. I would love to see a book more about Rox’s and Nic’s relationship as well.
I have already added the next book in the series to my TBR.
The book is a tad slow paced but the author really paints a scene when describing the country they are in.

What do you get when a dedicated, compassionate doctor crosses paths with a selfish billionaire who lives life in the fast lane at a breakneck pace? A steamy romance that spans across continents and exotic locations, and an emotional rollercoaster on the wild side of life.

Alex meets Ian, a billionaire mining magnet, in Botswana, where she is doing her best to treat children, with limited medical resources. They share an immediate attraction, but she is not about to become yet another notch on his belt. Ian is arrogant, sexy, and very charming. He is trying to prove that there is more to him than the playboy image he’s cultivated.

Both carry own emotional baggage and have tried to self-medicate the hurts from their past with copious amounts of alcohol. Luckily, they have help from their close friends who mix sage advice with lots of laughs along the way. Yet, as their relationship grows, they have no choice but to pick at the traumatic scabs of their childhood. They need to be vulnerable and decide if their love is worth fighting for. Alex and Ian are well-drawn, complicated individuals with relatable struggles. You will root for them every step of the way. It is a story of self-discovery, friendship, and love, of course.

What I love about the story is how seamlessly the author mixes in just enough medical terminology to keep you invested in Alex’s career. When I saw that the story starts off in my part of the world I was curious to see how she depicted the place and people. I'm happy to say the author created an engaging settings and realistic characters without reducing them to clichés or stereotypes. The only disappointment for me was that Alex and Ian’s story did not end as it could have done, but will continue in the next book.

If you are an armchair traveller, then you’ll love how the action takes you on a tour from Africa, to Europe, and North America at a galloping pace. This story is perfect for a beach read, to devour during a long commute, or if you are looking for an escape from the daily grind of life.

Alex is an amazing woman & doctor who travels around to help children, especially those who don't get the medical care they need in third world countries. Ian is a wealthy player who Alex comes across but it doesn't necessarily go that well as she recognizes him as such. Everything that follows is a lot of fun, with a side of conflict that's original to say the least. There are a lot of funny moments that had me laughing as we went on the journey with them, and trust me, we're definitely along for the ride because of HK Jacobs descriptive genius. The Wilde Type was a delightful debut, and I'm definitely excited to see what this author comes up with next! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Alex is a passionate doctor currently on assignment working in Botswana. She fully embraces her career and the adventures and challenges that come along with it. Ian Devall, billionaire playboy, then gets thrown into her life. She can't deny her attraction to him but her past keeps her from jumping in with two feet. This novel is a captivating story of self-discovery and self-growth. Jacobs really brings you right into the novel with her romantic characters, whisking you into their story through all these magical places. I was wholly charmed by the characters and their journey and enjoyed the escape!

"She carried the burden of this grief— a grief born of other people’s tragedies— and stuffed it away deep inside a keyless compartment."

"Moments like holding this little boy next to her chest— willing some of her life force into him and wishing that love was enough of a cure— were rare but so vital to her soul."

"I learned the hard way that choosing someone takes courage, and you have more courage than anyone I’ve ever known... but you need to be sure that he is choosing you too.”

BLURB: Dr. An ensuing path of self-discovery leads her to reopen the wounds of her past, and she must choose between the life she always imagined…or one she never dreamed was possible.

My thoughts: This book felt like a a blissful hallmark book, full of genuine characters you can't help but fall for, with depth and incredible character development. The storyline flowed so smoothly, and was really enjoyable. And the plot didn't leave me wanting. I really enjoyed these two and can't wait to continue on in their story! Thank you to @katieandbreypa and for letting me be apart of this team and gifting me this beautiful book!

Loved this novel! First of all, the author is a doctor, which I think is just wonderful. You could feel her love for it through the pages. Dr. Alexandra Wilde, the FMC, is living in Botswana and working in the Princess Marina hospital while completing her fellowship. She spends her days caring for sick children and helping to prevent illnesses in the community. I loved her character, her drive and passion for her patients was incredible and admirable. However, what she lacks is a personal life and intimacy. She has shielded herself from love for so long, pushing away anyone who got too close.

Her best friend in Botswana, Rox, is a fun loving, outgoing character. They meet often after work at a local bar to spend time together. One night, Rox and Alex play a game where they each pick a stranger that the other has to kiss. Alex always loses this game, of course, but on this particular night, she meets someone that will change her whole world.

Ian Devall (our MMC) is a billionaire playboy, who has stepped up to take over his fathers organization. He is sexy and charming, with an air of mystery about him. I absolutely loved the chemistry between the two MCs and enjoyed the playful banter between them.

This story is one of incredible self-discovery and character growth, as both Ian and Alex work to overcome past trauma and build new lives for themselves. The story also focuses heavily on Alex's first love, being a doctor, and I truly enjoyed learning more about that side of her. I felt this book was perfectly paced and included just enough suspense and drama to keep me hooked. I can't wait to read the next book in the series and loved how it ended.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review, all opinions are my own.

I thought this was a good read. A bit slow in the beginning for me. I did not feel the emotional attachment to the characters at first. In fact, I restarted the book when I was in a better mind set as well and it went better the second time around.

I know this story is about Alex and Ian, but I really liked Alex's best friend, Rox. She was very supportive of Alex. The type of friend that everyone would be so luckily to have in their life. Where Ian is concerned, I had mixed feelings about him. On one hand I could see he was a charmer. The way he treated Alex in the beginning and then tried to pass it off so easily did not go with for me. However, I could see that he did love Alex as well and they did share good chemistry.

The turmoil that Alex was experiencing was felt as I was reading. I felt for her, which did bring me closer to her. I would have liked a bit more of the medical side to be featured in the story as the book to be seemed to be more a romance with self-discovery mixed with a bit of medical drama. Yet, I did still like this book and would try another book by the author in the future.

This is apparently the first in a series because 357 pages just wasn't enough to tell this long-winded story. I had a few problems with this book: 1. Apparently Alex's friend makes enough money that she can buy Alex completely new outfits and Alex has no problem letting her do so; 2. The author wanted us to know she has a huge vocabulary and so she drops in uncommon medical terms and adjectives that border on purple prose all over the place; 3. The big reveal as to why Alex guards her heart so fiercely was really a big let down and rather unbelievable. And as to resolving the issues between the two protagonists, apparently we have to wait until the next book to see if that happens.

Audio version. This was very difficult to finish. The language was so flowery with awkward word choices...so many unnecessary details. For instance, when the woman on the plan asks for a pen to write down a quote. That was so random.

The conflicts were not very exciting, which made the plot dull. Alex and Ian were only physically together less than 10 times. Therefore, it was hard to establish a true romance. I had also thought the novel would be set in Botswana but only a short amount of the plot occurred there.

I honestly am so surprised by all the glowing reviews. It was one of the worst books I've ever listened to.

This one had a nice love story but it's about much more. Finding one self and balancing life, love, family and friends. I liked the relationship between Alexandra and Ian. They were both great characters but my favorite was Rox, Alexandra's best friend! I would like to read more about her and Nick. It's a slow paced well written story that's easy to get lost in! Thank you Katie and Brey for sharing this book with me!

Wilde Type

Dr. Alex Wilde. A fan of the Beatles. Overly dedicated to the children in her care. Falling in love with Ian, an international playboy.

Story starts in Botswana and continues in Philadelphia. As Alex deals with her past and present, she figures out what’s right for her future…and trying to decide if Ian is part of that future.

Well written story with so much more to the story line than just a romance. Loved this story and looking forward to reading more about Alex and Ian.
