After Wic and the Phantom’s successful operation on Karkin Four, the team learns of the enemy’s plans for a swift retaliation: an all-out assault on New York City.
Together, Wic must rally the team’s resources to plan an emergency counterassault that will push the Phantoms to their limits. With help from unexpected places, mission success seems all but assured.
But when a new terrifying technology emerges, Wic must face the most challenging choice of all: sacrifice his teammates for the fate of Earth.
Allegiances will be tested, friendships will fray, and the planet will march toward the greatest darkness it has ever encountered.

So you named a stolen alien ship "Dolores" ... but who am I to judge, it's not like I named my childhood bike "Cherry" (YES, I did compare a spaceship to a bike).
October 2023 Finally I'm caught up with all the action and ready for book 4. This was intense - and we lost a great character. But it's all good, we gained one too. With RC Bray narrating, this can start to sound like the Joe & Skippy show (Expeditionary Force) between Chuck the Rifle and Wic. But the difference here, although subtle, is that Wic is in charge. Hopefully their relationship won't descend into Chuck making fun of him all the time, because then we really would have just Joe and Skippy 2.0. One Joe & Skippy is enough. Chuck and Wic need to be different. And indeed they are to a large degree. I kind of wish Chuck had some kind of southern accent, because that would be hilarious. Or even a Brooklyn accent. When Veronica came out with that Hispanic/Spanish accent it was hilarious.
All that said, this was hard because of things like the torture and mutilation of humans. Anytime you're dealing with the subject of human slavery it can get dicey, even if it's fictional aliens who are in charge. People as merchandise is upsetting. So the story here has an even bigger punch when the humans save the day - with losses, but still.
August 2022 I really like this crazy cast of characters! The action is good, the dialogue is great, and RC Bray brings it all to life brilliantly.
Well, this series is getting much, much better. I've even gotten used to having a talking gun around and some of his stupid humor! That's saying a lot when I at first didn't see the point in having a "talking gun" around in a military science fiction book. The humor is getting better and not so much of it. I think it fits in more so I think the author is learning as he writes. I'm also reading some real good character building and personal interaction between the Phantom members. Our main guy, Master Gunnery Sergeant (Ret.) Patrick (Wic) Finnegan is one heck of a leader and is becoming more so as the story progresses.
Yeah, he was retired some where in upstate New York, but close enough that he had a good view of the great city and clearly saw the alien invasion when it happened. And by now, you should know the rest. The aliens are "harvesting" humans for whatever purpose their customers have in mind. As we found out in the last book, humans from Earth are being taken through giant transportation rings back to a merchandise processing facility (Terminal A3) on planet Karkin Four. It's not necessarily a place that humans can survive and they are treated like cattle. And again, there are millions of humans being taken from Earth, that is until Wic and his Phantom Team stopped that process cold!
Due to Phantom Team's action, the aliens have decided to stop processing humans and are withdrawing all their ships and rings from Earth. That's a good sign except for the fact that millions of humans that have been processed won't make it back and that's something bothering Wic. He would certainly like to do something about that, but he knows he doesn't have the assets with him on Earth. In fact, him and his team just barely made it back to Earth. Now they need to focus on getting all the survivors that are still in New York City some place where they can continue to survive. They certainly won't be able to do so in the city since now of the city services and in fact, nothing is working in New York City at all. Food is all but gone so the people stuck in their homes or hotels or wherever are going to start getting real hungry real soon. Then there's those that are already injured. Since none of the hospitals are functioning, there's a lot of people that need help and can't find it. So, Wic leads his team to begin getting the remaining people out of New York City.
He gets help from a lot of police that surprisingly stayed on Duty and are doing their best to help folks. Then there's the gang members who have suddenly realized that without the people in the city to prey on, their lives are going to get much worse. A lot of these gang members don't know how to exist without functioning city services, food stores and other city conveniences. Wic confronts a number of these and eventually convinces them that they can't continue to be the "bad dudes" they think they are because, for one, Wic's people are much better armed and trained than they are and two, they don't have a clue as to what to do. So with the help of some of the city gangs, the local law enforcement officers and now the not so hidden Russian mafia, they all pull together to get people taken care of. Except, where are they going to take all these people?
Wic comes up with a solution and it seems to be the only one that will work. Without the manpower to now run all of our utilities for electricity and fuel station, we're back to the middle ages of doing without fancy electronics and gadgets. Fortunately, Wic knows of a group of people in Pennsylvania who are used to living this way and are very generous when it comes helping others. So, that problem seems to have a solution. Then another one shows up.
A large, black alien spaceship comes through the last ring on Earth. It's armed to the teeth and Wic hasn't got a clue as to why it might be here. Then his alien friend, Major Insarka Kindesh, comes through in a small ship to tell Wic that he's got a big problem. It seems that an alien General isn't too pleased with Wic and the Phantom Teams activities so he's put a huge bounty on Wic's head. The black ship belongs to the most feared bounty hunter the aliens know. And now he's after Wic!
Again, I'll say at first I wasn't crazy about having a talking rifle around, but that part of the story is kind of humorous and it's growing on me. There's still a lot of serious fighting and I'm amazed that for every problem they encounter, Wic seems to come up with a plan on how to deal with it. And then he starts implementing his plan pretty quickly. Oh, he does discuss some of his plan with his team, but not very much and usually only to get them to understand what he wants done. I don't care how good a leader you are, no leader can always come up with the perfect plan and that's what's happening in this book. It's makes for a good story, but it's not realistic, but this is science fiction after all!
Even though I figured this could be the end of the series, it's not! Book 4, "Decayed Legacy", is out on Amazon already. I have it on my reading list, in fact, it's going to be read next!
Initially, I considered reading the entire series, but this installment has convinced me that it's not worth the effort. I've decided to regard the series as a trilogy and leave it at that. The writing isn't terrible, but the STORY certainly is. The frequent repetition of slogans and team names is grating. Hearing the term "OTF" one more time might just push me over the edge. The narrative often skips over important developments without further exploration. For instance, the book fails to address the ramifications of a dead-ridden New York City and an impending famine, offering only a simplistic resolution to these complex issues.
The story is riddled with Deus Ex Machina instances that remove any sense of real danger or stakes. Predictable plotlines ensure that when a character is removed, it's expected, having been foreshadowed excessively early on. The narrative frequently relies on convenient occurrences that solely benefit the main characters or cast doubt on their intelligence. Mirroring an issue from the second book, the characters once again bypass an opportunity to neutralize a global threat for the sake of a few individuals, a decision I find implausible to support through another book filled with similar contrivances and coincidences.
The book indulges in numerous far-fetched scenarios (spoilers included):
- An alien commando, previously introduced, improbably returns with advanced weapons and armor for everyone, a development even less believable than in its first appearance due to the implausibly quick technological advancements. - A secret underground town, controlled by the Russian mob and equipped with years' worth of food supplies, conveniently agrees to support thousands of survivors. - Elite alien commandos, dispatched specifically to eliminate the protagonists, are effortlessly defeated, diminishing any perceived threat. - Critical moments where the main character is on the brink of death are repeatedly resolved with timely distractions, undermining the narrative's credibility. - Characters inexplicably master alien technology upon first encounter, and the aliens fail to utilize their superior weaponry effectively.
The first book showed promise but ultimately failed to delve into its mysteries satisfactorily. Additionally, the overemphasis on military acronyms and weapon specifications became overwhelming in this installment.
Caveat: I'm writing this ~4mo after having read the book, and my memory isn't the best. I blew through this series so quickly that it all blended together and I don't really have any memorable details, so this is the same review for each book.
Someone I know was excitedly explaining the plot of a series that had this military dude fighting off an alien invasion with a snarky AI who was just hilarious. My response was oh yeah I love that one, Expeditionary Force, right? Nope… Ruins of the Earth. So we each decided to try the other series out.
For me, personally, this is We Have Expeditionary Force At Home. This is Expeditionary Force for those who thought Skippy was too weird, and wanted more guns and boots on the ground. For those who never got to meet Col. Smythe, or those who did and wanted the Marines instead of the SAS. For those who thought ships named "It Was Like That When We Got Here" or "How'd That Work Out For You" were just a bit much.
So, clearly I prefer Expeditionary Force. But. I ran out of it. This fits the same niche of something I can turn my brain off for, and it was entertaining enough and fine for that. It's not great, it's not mind-blowing, but I read the whole series, I got a few chuckles of out it, and I didn't hate it.
…probably just going to re-read ExFor next time though.
Phantom Deadfall Book 3 of Ruins of the Earth Series
'Ruins of the Earth Book 3' proves that things can ... nah, I'm not telling. So, here we are at Book 3, Phantom Deadfall, the latest series from the excellent minds of writers Christopher Hopper and J.N. Chaney. The battle continues, and the stakes are even higher because now we are fighting them on home turf. The team is together and ready to kick some aliens' a... it will be a difficult task, especially since the invaders are really PO'd! I hope you've read the first two books. Otherwise, it'll be like taking a bath with your clothes on. You'll hate it and feel really stupid. Catch up, 'cause there's a lot happening in Phantom Deadfall. Once again, R.C. Bray brings his unique storytelling talent that brings each character to life. -Mr.Bill
A *slightly* slower-paced start to part three of the series sees our team try to assess and collate the resources of NYC. Before long they have a *falling out* with the galaxy's most dangerous assassin, their first team member loses their plot armour, but thankfully they *immediately* find a new team member within the ruins of Manhattan to replace them. They then hatch a ridiculously convoluted plan to sabotage the assassin's efforts to destroy *all life on Earth*, as the Androchidans are *finally* sick of Phantom Team and their BS.
It's far-fetched yes, but it's easy reading and far from the worst thing I've read all year.
Wow! Just wow! I thought the first two books were good in the series, but what do you do when the aliens you thought you beat decide to chase you back to your home world to kill you and put your head on a pike, while also trying to destroy the earth?
In Patrick Finnigan's (Wic's) case you kill the bad guy and take his head while shoving a megaton equivient explosive back into the aliens' "processing center, along with a skyscraper and make it go "boom!"
Very fun story! Looking forward to #4

I thought this book 3 was the end but evidently there is more as seems to be a pattern to drag out the storyline beyond what you expected :-) The book is entertaining enough to keep you ready for a conclusion. Some of the characters and jargon are simple / rough but if you don't get too caught up it can be funny at times :-) I'll read some other books first before I go on with this series. Bottom line its an easy read and action packed storyline.
Back on Earth, the Phantoms are emptying NY of people due to the lack of resources there, using the Amish to create refugee camps. Suddenly, a big ship comes through the ring and sends out three drop ships. The Androchians have sent their most prized Assassin to take out WIC and the phantoms and then destroy the Earth. The game is now afoot with the highest possibly stakes. A rip roaring military style adventure story cracks along at a rapid pace.
A very interesting concepthe book's theories at red 3 Avenue so far and all 3 Kingsley very well quittin of interesting enough the world is saved by a gunner retarded and it's gonna continue for a while don't know if I like the length of it d*** favorite and I'm going in the book 5 and if it doesn't seem to have an end that wealthy what happens so far you'll enjoy it
Mistakes: I found one, an herbicide should be a herbicide
Plot: Time to stop the doomsday machine before it mills all plant life on earth.
Characters: I didn't really care for Yoshi going from a high functioning alcoholic to a sloppy drunk. I did like how he went out. Sissy will be missed as well.
Book still has some incredible humor! The writing style is as always easy to read super fun and relaxing. The action just gets bigger in this book. There are some losses. But like in any good War you also have a Few Good Men. I recommend strongly that if you liked the other books you should read this one too.
An excellent series where the heroes of earth OTF.
Intergalactic war and adventure. A brilliant set of action packed stories that will keep you turning pages, until the end comes too soon. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. The spider drones in the sewer was a favourite. I look forward to more from this series.
I loved the third book in this series and will buy the next one too. However, the bad guys are getting a little too stupid to be believable. In all of these centuries humans are the first to pose a serious challenge to them despite the advanced tech that they stole from their previous conquests? Ehh.
Now, translated that would be "Shoot, kick and stomp". That pretty well sums up this series so far. It has been entertaining and as Kindle has just reminded me. I have been reading solidly for the past 24 hours. My wife's in bed. Your wife might not allow you to read this series, but if she does, enjoy!
Clearly, the action, storytelling, and adventure aspects are all there, because, we’ll, Chaneyverse. But the character development has gotten exponentially better in this book. It was good to start with, but we see the beauty of real human flaws, and the strength created by flaws and dealing with our personal demons. Just such a great book.
You are taken on a journey on Earth where people are fighting aliens and finding ways to survive . There are soldiers fighting them along with other people wanting to make a difference , but things went strange for them . The did a good job with book you can't stop reading , they did a great job with the book.
This cannot be read as a standalone novel as it really needed to have read the previous two novels and to know American cities in detail to appreciate the plot. I also found it increasingly unbelievable but persevered to the end. Sorry to give a negative review as the author has worked hard on background material for the details.
Wow great storyline with all the blood and guts you could ask for lol. Again another well written book. Totally looking forward to book 4 due out in april. Well done well worth 5 stars
This has been an outstanding series to read so far! Superb storyline. Believable action. Humanity pulling together towards a common cause. Can wait for book four! Bring it on!!!
Another enjoyable non stop exciting story. The battle scenes are really outstanding. I couldn't stop laughing about how Chuck thought flounders were dangerous lol... On to the next book...
This series just keeps on getting better and better. I couldn’t put it down, and read late into the night (early morning actually) as I had to know what happened next. If you like sci-fi military fiction, you’ll love this.
This one was a bit slower for me than the previous books, but I still enjoyed it. Great characters and some new ones, too. A ton of action throughout and humor as well.
Metal spiders that spit out acid and suck brains out even Stephen King would be happy with that,And a big ass plushie with a bad attitude as the phantom's have been to hell and back
Our characters are well developed. The site of NYC seems filled out enough that residents can throughly get into the narrative. Looking forward to book 4!!
