This was not like any crime thriller I have ever read before. Whitman's debut book is one you want to add to your list. its a short, fast read. You just may be very paranoid after reading Premonition.
I gave this book 4 stars and I hope you get a chance to read it. I recommend it.

The name of the book says it all! She always had a premonition that something awful and gory was going to happen to her. She even decided to work in the true crime industry because of her deep seeded premonition and has become a producer for a CrimeTV show. Will her premonition come true?

I think for most of us, we do fear things like this occasionally. I do believe that we can’t let fear dictate our lives though.

“Murder followed her everywhere. There was no getting away from it.”

Cary, a former employee at Crime TV has been obsessed with True Crime stories since she was little. She can recite them off of the top of her head & often when she envisions a location rather than tourist attractions all she sees is the death, blood, gore; torture that took place there. She also has an ongoing fear, an “all-consuming phobia” that she too will perish at the hands of a killer.

Most nights she gets no sleep at all, staring into space into the wee hours of the morning. If she makes it until 5 am & the sun starts to rise, in her mind she believes that she’s made it to see another day.

“Some people count sheep, others count killers.”

After she lost her job, Cary moves back to her hometown where both her mother & twin sister reside. Even though the relationship with both is strained she’s happy to be near her family & feels safer, especially when it comes to being close to her sister’s dog Obelus aka “Obi.”

But when she’s out late one night she sees a man commit a horrible act of violence against two baby deer & from then on it seems everywhere she goes tragedy follows her.

As Cary begins to connect the dots between “accident” after accident & the death toll rises she desperately tries to remember the face of the man behind the wheel & wonders why he’s after her. Why is he killing both animals & humans? He quickly becomes known as “The Deadly Deranged Driver” & is all over the news.

Will Cary’s biggest fear come true or will she be spared the wrath of a crazy stranger?

And wouldn't you know ... there seems to be a serial killer loose in this small time.

Cary has a secret fear, one she's been fixated on for many years. She believes that she will be murdered.

And now she feels that her premonition will come true ... soon.

The author has a unique background through her decades-long work as an executive and producer for Court TV and HLN, covering almost every major high-profile murder case in America. As such, there is a great deal of credibility within these pages. Also, there are a ton of references to real-life killers over the years.

This is well written, debut novel, with characters that stand out. Twists and turns kept me glued to the pages. The suspense starts on the very first page and maintains through to the very unexpected conclusion.

I’m warning you up front: if you are an animal lover, this book may be disturbing. I was very unnerved, but I believe that is precisely the feeling Wendy Whitman may have wanted to leave the reader with.

Cary has an all-consuming phobia of being murdered, maybe because she worked for over twenty years covering crime on television. But when she sees a malicious act of violence against two young fawns on a dark road, it entangles her in a madman’s web.

Cary is an interesting character; paranoia, fear, sexual confusion seem to overtake her - 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦𝘳.

Written in a terse, calculating narrative, 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
is not only a psychological thriller but looks into the mind of the killer as well. Wendy Whitman uses her knowledge from covering high-profile murder cases by scattering references to real-life cases throughout the story, giving it all the more a chilling edge.

Overall I normally like this genre. However it just wasn’t for me.

I found it extremely repetitive, which I know the clue is in the title (go figure). I just think this would have worked much better as a short story.

Whew! This book really packs a lot in for its teeny tiny size! I found the whole aspect of Cary’s career with Court TV fascinating and really enjoyed hearing all of the behind the scenes information. This book touches on a lot of issues such as sexuality, confusion regarding sexuality, family trauma and of course murder. Lots of murder! Wendy takes us on the psychology journey that someone who is surrounded by murder on a daily basis really goes through. She is paranoid, nervous and anxiety ridden. She is also an animal lover, carrier of emotional baggage and loves her sweets which, let’s face it, describes a lot of us LOL
 
You won’t put this faced paced book down because you become vested in Carrie’s well-being and you will want to know what happens. I will say the ending shocked the shit outta me! Like – I could not believe it! Very realistic so as you know, I loved it! I hope we get a sequel from Wendy because I know there has to be more! My one and only concern is that there is a bit of animal violence which I know is difficult for lots and it isn’t as bad as some novels I have read but, its still there and I want to warn people because it can be upsetting.

I loved the premise, and I loved how it ended! But I didn't like the third person narration at all, it was kinda boring, and I felt like there were a lot of unnecessary details haphazardly included, without any rhyme or reason. Understandable as it is a debut by the author. I kinda had to struggle to push through it, but think it might just be me because I consume thrillers for breakfast, lunch and dinner lol. I think you might really enjoy this one if you don't frequent this genre.

“Premonition” is a mesmerizing crime fiction novel about a woman who tracks a serial killer, and I enjoyed it because of the main character.

I liked the concept of the story. For me, the book stood out because of the way the author portrayed Cary. Cary is a fascinating character, and the author added many layers to her. It was interesting to see how she dealt with the phobia while balancing her romantic feelings and having an inferiority complex around her family and friends. You can see how she tries to balance her emotions when she goes to meet Kim with Anna. Moreover, I enjoyed her scenes with Vito as well. The author also adds supporting characters like Anna, Vito, and Hank well to the tale.

The author also sets the mystery nicely where you see the culprit shadowing Cary and noting down her move. While it took time for me to adjust to the story’s slow-burn, I eventually enjoyed the pacing. There are some shocking moments towards the end as the level reaches its climax. Moreover, the ending completely threw me off, and it is not one that I expected.

However, my only criticism of the story was the unnecessary details. The author tends to add too many details about Cary at times that stray away from the plot. For instance, I did not need to know how she got her Jeep or the history with Romy. The book would have been excellent if the author added more twists and turns instead of focusing on Cary’s background.

Apart from that, I enjoyed reading this book. Overall, “Premonition” is a suspenseful thriller that I felt stands out because of Cary and the tale’s climax.

This is a psychological thriller, in the sense that it fits the general definition and, despite its flaws, it does maintain tension throughout. I’ll return to thase below.
As regards the plot, the premise is fairly novel. Cary, a forty-something woman with a serious sugar addiction, is confused about her sexuality but seems to be mainly homosexual. She has been made redundant from her job with a True Crime based broadcasting network, but is still occasional employed by a different, but similar, network. Her only real friend appears to be her sister’s dog, Obi. From early childhood, she has had a premonition that she will be murdered, which appears to be the main reason for her employment specialism, and the book is peppered with allusions to famous, mostly mass or serial, killings. One night, having driven out in search of a sweetness fix, she sees a car deliberately mow down two young fawns. The man, otherwise we have no information about the driver, spotted her and decided to stalk her. She does not report this even when, a few days later, two young girls are killed in a similar way and she suspects the same driver was involved. Two psychological misfits for the price of one! Other events cause her to confide in a small group of acquaintances and they start to investigate this possible serial killer, who kills animals and then uses the same methods to kill people.
I have concerns about the writing, which is a bit repetitive, but my main problem is with the logic of the plot. Cary and her ‘team’ just don’t proceed in any sensible way and certainly not with the sort of urgency that one might expect. In fact they spend so much time meeting in restaurants (almost all described as ‘favorite’), avoiding the issues rather than progressing them, that this could be read as a good food guide for Connecticut (they are all fictitious but names are similar to real places). This lack of logical progression would nearly work if it was just Cary but the others behave rationally in every other way except when they interact with the crimes. I didn’t like the ending, although it is consistent with the characters so I can see that others would be happy with it.

This was a strange, jarring read that I rather enjoyed, and there's a lot to absorb in this slim read of just over 250 pages.

Cary is a fraternal twin, confused about her sexuality, obsessed with sweets, but most of all, holds the unshakable belief that she will be murdered. Her entire life is centered around crime, from associating places with tragedy to working as a journalist on a crime show.

One night Cary is out on a late-night run for sweets when she sees a deer cautiously crossing the road, waiting for her two young fawns to follow. A car that had slowed down and curiously turned off its headlights roared to life just as the fawns were crossing. Cary is distraught but does not report the incident until a string of brutal murders begin and she realizes she's in a killer's crosshairs.

Besides that horrific scene, there is another extremely upsetting scene with an animal later in the book; readers sensitive to animal brutality should be forewarned.

I did want to note that the "voice" of the book, which some found to be choppy, is, in my opinion, very stream-of-consciousness and mimics Cary's hyperactive brain. She jumps from one thought to the next, so the reader must get used to her jumbled thoughts. It was not a detriment to me. The ending is so abrupt that I had to read it twice to make sure I understood what happened, and I felt very unsettled.

I'd like to read more from this author. With her background, it's clear she knows a lot about crime. She's got a unique voice with a lot to add to this genre.

I’m still reeling over the ending of this one! It came on fast and furious and it’s been awhile since a conclusion threw me for a loop!

If you enjoy thrillers, mixed with true crime then I would HIGHLY recommend you read this book.

Wendy has lots of true crime cases woven throughout this read. I’m a big fan of true crime and there were some cases mentioned that I was familiar with and others I googled only because I wanted to to know more about those cases.

This book really had me invested in the main character, Cary. Throughout the book you learn so many details about Cary’s life that at times I felt like she was a real person.

As far back as Cary can remember, she always thought she would die violently. That carried over to her professional life as Cary was a producer on CrimeTV. Once the network changed direction, Cary became a freelancer on an old friend’s popular legal show.

Cary has a sugar addiction and on a middle of the night snack run, Cary sees a car intentionally mow down two baby deer. When Cary finds out that two teenage girls are hit and killed at the spot very close to where the fawns were killed, her OCD brain goes
into overdrive.

Cary enlists two qualified friends, Vito and Anna, to help her find a serial killer as more killings begin to rack up.

Once the trio go to the police, Cary finds that her life is in danger. She must find the killer before her premonition comes true.

I was gifted this book by the author as a thank you for something nice I did and I’m so thankful.

The book is a thriller and I’ve read quite a few this year, and this one surprised me more often than any of the others that I read this year, and I’m not usually surprised by books like this. What I also enjoyed was that it was written from a different perspective from most thriller books. We got to see the situation from a crime reporter. So someone who really understands the ins and outs of an investigation or case, but isn’t part of it officially. I haven’t come across that before and really liked it.

There were a few personal preference things about that book that I didn’t love. I’m not a huge tiny detail person, and there was a lot of food detail in the book. The main characters ate a lot and every meal was detailed, which was a bit much for my taste (pun intended). The food overtook other important details in the book for me, such as I can tell you the main character is a sugar fiend but can’t tell you her sister’s name. So I did find that a bit distracting and occasionally the author would have the character remember old cases that they had worked on and the ones I didn’t know sort of confused me.

But overall I enjoyed the story and as I said the twist surprised me and that is unusual for me!

This psychological thriller was filled with crazy heart racing moments and edge-of-your-seat suspense! When our main character, Cary, witnesses a car intentionally run over two deer, she grabs the attention of the man driving the car. He begins to stalk her, and when two young girls are killed, her instincts tell her she’s in some major danger.

I really enjoyed Cary’s quirks as a character, it helped to make the plot make a bit more sense. I would have questioned Cary’s actions, but learning her personality, I came to understand why she chose to do the things she did. I did find some areas to be a bit repetitive, but overall I thought this was a solid story! It was a tense one that I needed to get to the end and find out what happened!

I do want to caution readers that there are a few scenes with graphic brutality to animals. This may be a trigger for some readers.

Wendy Whitmans debut is truly different to any crime thriller I have ever read.
Cary Mackin is the main character who has an extremely unusual affliction - she believes that one day she will be murdered.
It’s difficult to say much more about the storyline without giving away spoilers.
In my opinion the book could have been written as a short story it just seemed to go over and over the same events and no real police investigation. And the ending was so abrupt and left too many loose ends.
I did like the storyline and the characters were all interesting but I’m afraid I did feel bored at times.

It was interesting being inside the mind of someone that has worked true crime cases for twenty years. There was an edginess to the writing and a matter of fact style of storytelling that makes sure the reader is focused and picking up on the details. There were several animal deaths that may be an issue for some, but overall this is an intriguing story of a woman with OCD and paranoia, a serial killer, and the need to solve the mystery of the murders before the main character's premonition can come true.

An intricate blend of thriller and true crime, this book was a trip! When a CrimeTV producer witnesses a couple of baby deer get maliciously hit by a car, she doesn't bother telling the police. And then a few days later, two young girls are brutally hit and run in the same place at around the same time. Cary decides they must be connected and with the help of her private investigator friend, they are on the hunt for the truth about these crimes. Will they figure it out before her premonition of being murdered comes true?

I didn't care for the writing style at all and, while the story moves at a decent pace, a lot of information feels superfluous, i.e. not every side character needs a backstory, frequently comparing old cases with some new case detail, and too much talk about food. I know characters need flaws for an interesting story, but this protagonist was such a mess that it was impossible for me to relate to her. Finally, the addition of explicit language and objectionable content made what was already a bad book that much worse.

As lover of mystery and of paranormal this book left me wanting. The title is Premonition, but I see little of premonition in it. There was a surfeit of eating going on in the book. Mentioning of eating, going out to eat or drink is fine, but it seemed like the characters were always eating or thinking about eating. Then the main character is killed at the end that doesn’t leave an accommodation for a series. The author was apparently trying to make a point, but I think she missed it.

This debut psychological thriller had me from the first chapter. Cary struggles with both her sexuality and her paranoia of being murdered. When she witnesses 2 fawns being run over and learns of 2 girls killed by a car, Cary is determined to link the crimes and find the killer. There are references to past serial killers which I found interesting. Be warned there is animal abuse in the story. I enjoyed this book and if you enjoy True Crime this is a book for you.

The book started with many different pieces to the story and I was having a hard time understanding how they all fit together. But, the author pulled it together and all the pieces came together by the end. I was frustrated with Cary and her careless behavior. I believe the sequel is being written. I'll give it a shot!

Cary moves to a small town and finds a journalist job, in her field of true crime. Perfect timing since there is a serial killer on the loose. But…Cary has always felt she will be murdered. Will she be murdered before the killer is caught?
