Heavens to Murgatroyd, Find a Better Mediterranean Slow Cooker Book!

I've used crockpots for decades and even ran a very popular crockpot mailing list on YahooGroups, back when that was a thing. So I know me some crockpot cooking! The title states this will be a Mediterranean cookbook, but it is not. According to the intro, the author states it has Mediterranean diet recipes, which have their basis in the cooking of ancient Crete, Sicily, Italy, and Greece. But a quick perusal of the recipe titles will show influences from all over the globe, including curries, chilis, tagines, and barbecue. Coney Sauce, anyone? Or how about a dish labeled “oriental” or “Texas”? In fact, this seems like a more general cookbook than for any particular region... and especially NOT the Mediterranean. The cookbook has an odd organization as well, with overlapping categories like lunch, dinner, mains, seafood, poultry, and meat! I think the book would have been better organized by the main protein; let the reader decide when to eat it.

As to the recipes themselves, they have problems. For parts of the book, the ingredient lists are in reverse order from what we typically see... that is, the ingredient name comes first and is followed by the amount. It doesn't happen every chapter, but it does in some. Some ingredient amounts are left off completely. As this is a crockpot cookbook, the directions are usually pretty straightforward, though some require more work than others; not all are “set and forget” as the dangling participle of the subtitle implies. I question the use of a slow cooker for certain recipes. For instance, the eggplant parmesan would be better made without it; the recipe as written is nearly cooked and would be mushy if cooked in the crockpot. The first dessert recipe, Apple Olive Cake, made me go, “Ewwww” when I saw it in the recipe list, though I love both apples and olives… separately; thankfully, the recipe itself has Olive OIL, not olives! This is a poorly done cookbook on several levels, and I recommend that you find another for Mediterranean cooking or the Mediterranean diet.

I received a free copy of this cookbook, but that did not affect my review.
