The last time Jack Reacher passed through South Dakota, almost everyone close to him was savagely murdered.
Some say Reacher killed them. Maybe he did.
But one survived.
A ruthless gangster. Imprisoned at the Bolton Federal Correctional Facility.
A daring prison break.
Police and witnesses ruthlessly murdered as he barrels across frosty South Dakota.
Now, FBI Special Agent Kim Otto lands in the middle of the gangster’s desperate escape to freedom. She joins law enforcement to recapture the brutal felon before he disappears forever.
Agent Otto is no longer working alone.
She wanted a new partner and now she’s got one.
William Burke, an ex-SEAL formerly assigned to the Hostage Rescue Team, should have been the answer to all of her problems.
But Burke’s got a cloud on his record.
How will his past impact their mission?
61 Hours was almost the death of Jack Reacher. Jack Frost might finish the job.

Diane Capri continues her unique spin on Lee Child’s popular Jack Reacher character and the series of novels that made him a household name (almost ruined by Tom Cruise). The elusive ‘man from nowhere in particular’ continues traversing small town USA, while Capri uses some of the information to create her own thrillers where he is the target. An FBI agent does her best to piece together loose sightings of the man, but always seems to get herself embroiled in local issues. It’s a great way to complement to the Reacher series, particularly for fans who have an affinity for his smooth arrival and departure from any situation.
FBI Special Agent Kim Otto has been assigned a new partner, something that fills her with an uneasiness. While she loves her former partner, change is not something she’s come to handle quite well. Still, she’s focussed on the trail of Jack Reacher, who has been sighted in rural America, making the journey one of great importance. The Feds find themselves in South Dakota, more specifically Bolton Correctional Facility. The hope is to find anyone who might have clues as to where Reacher has gone. He made an impact when last he was there, leaving only one person alive, a crazed gangster with a sharp mind.
While Otto cannot be sure if Reacher was behind the murder of many in this small town, she knows that talking to the one survivor and his lawyer could prove helpful. There’s a problem, though, as a cargo plane crashed onto the property and started a massive prison escape, leaving everyone scrambling to collect the inmates as quickly as possible.
Otto and her know-it-all partner, William Burke, join forces with local law enforcement to capture the gangster, as he may be the key to locating Reacher. However, he’s not keen to return to custody, traversing across the barren lands of South Dakota, with his lawyer and a few others in tow. It’s a race to locate him, in hopes that he won’t make it to Canada and slip away for good, eh?!
I’ve been a fan of Lee Child and his books for many years. When I discovered that Diane Capri was working under the blessing of Child to create this offshoot series, I gladly accepted the chance to read it as well. Capri ensures that series fans understand the backstory and how it complements this piece, though admits that she takes some liberties of her own, as she wields the proverbial pen. This story is pulled from the pages of 61 Hours, a great book on its own. Take a look to see how Capri added depth and excitement to her own thriller.
FBI Special Agent Kim Otto serves as a stellar protagonist once again. She has a lot going on, besides the hunt for Jack Reacher, seeking to balance it as best she can. The story connects her with a handful of well-developed characters that help develop the plot lines and provide insight into the location of one Jack Reacher. However, there is the added connection that Otto has with William Burke, her new partner and a man she cannot fully trust. Burke has a past, something that Otto has discovered by pulling some strings, making the connect between these two Feds strained at best. Capri uses one-off characters effectively while borrowing some of the backstory Child laid down in the aforementioned Reacher novel.
The novel—and the series, to be honest— is entertaining, particularly for fans of Reacher and his nomadic ways. The narrative pushes the story along effectively while characters shed light on plot points that keep the reader guessing throughout. A mix of chapter lengths provide the reader with some teasers and begs them to keep reading, of only to find resolution. While I admit that I do not remember the intricacies of each Reacher novel, nor do I re-read it afterwards, Diane Capri’s book remind me of key points and cement the belief that these two series complement one another so well.
Kudos, Madam Capri, for another winner. I cannot wait to see what story you pair your next novel with, and how close a Reacher-Otto encounter might be.
With so many books out there, and never enough time, I sometimes miss out on authors/series. By coincidence I picked up this title and only then I discovered what it was really all about. Jack Frost is a fast-paced story where Kim Otto, her new partner Burke and a lot of other officials drive a round in a desperate attempt to find Fern Olson, who is believed to have more information about the whereabouts of the elusive Jack Reacher. This one is based on 61 Hours by Lee Child. Since I'm a fan of the Jack Reacher series, I enjoyed myself reading this spin-off; I liked the writing style of Diane Capri a lot and it was hard to put the book down. However, it may be because this is already #11 in the series, I felt I missed out on a lot of background information. Who is the Boss and why is he able to see and hear everything Kim and her partner do? Why is there an ex-partner who is apparently able to find all information they need while Kim and Burke drive around, often clueless? I decided to read it as 'a story about law enforcement people hunting a criminal' so it made slightly more sense and therefore it ended with three stars. It's hard to try and have an opinion on a whole series after reading just one book, so I picked up the next book in this series and I will read and review it soon.
I was fully in the 4 stars for rating until just before the 94% mark. I thought the ending movie film extravaganza and not at all physical or operational believable.
But it was a read that sure kept you embedded, despite Gaspar being retired and not on the scene.
Kim Otto is herself. There are three other main characters in action throughout. And the settings in South Dakota are all 5 stars. COMPLETELY. In May yet. But frigid cold.
Reacher appears very, very briefly near the ending. Kim Otto is at a crux now with this being accomplished? Where is this apt to go? I've lost interest to see. That's definite.
I don't know if I will continue it. Easy read, enjoyable to a certain extent. Characters are carved.
But there is just too many (in this one especially) innocent bystander death. Or murder of lower level criminals or hucksters. Regardless, violent death. Over my limits. Not so much gratuitous but just mind-numbing in the vapid executions of the moment.
No. I think I will leave Capri "search for Reacher" here.
I have read "Jack Frost" by Diane Capri, it's the latest book in the Hunt for Jack Reacher series. Will Kim Otto of the FBI ever find him or get to know what mission he is supposed to be wetted for? I don't think so but it is still fun reading and the idea of Otto visiting every place the Reacher books has taken him is fantastic. If you like me is a fan of Lee Childs character then you should try these books. In this one they are on there way to interview a lawyer when they find themselves in the middle of an unusual prison break.
Over the last few years I have read all of the Jack Reacher stories and all the Hunt for Jack Reacher stories as well. This will be the 43rd. And it is another great read. And the next two in this series have already been announced. This is the fourth I have read since that initial binge read. First I read the 29 Jack Reacher Novels and short stories by Lee Child. And then I read all the books in this series. This is the eleventh novel in the Hunt for Reacher Series, and the fourteenth story featuring Otto. In this one she finally gets new back up. But Otto still has Gaspar in the wings helping out as much as he can.The source book for this volume was Lee Child’s 61 Hours. That was the 14th Reacher Novel I read and it is the 14th Hunt for Reacher Story I have read. That one was one of my Favorites in the Reacher series. And I felt we found out a lot more about Reacher and what makes him tick. In this one We gain some more insight into Otto.
The cast of characters in this story is:
Kim Otto William Burke Reggie Smithers Charles Cooper Carlos Gaspar Lamont Finlay Fern Olson Duff Keegan Liam Walsh Petey Burns
and
Jack Reacher
I really enjoyed 61 Hours, and I really liked this one as well. This in this one there was far less about Reacher and much more about Otto and her new partner William Burke. At first Otto is heading out from Carter’s Crossing and headed to Bolton, first to see a lawyer and hopefully her client. But a plane crashes into the prison and soon multiple agencies are hunting. But Otto and Burke are helping with the escaped prisoners, but still focused on Reacher. But a lot of things are not going according to plan. For Otto, and for Duff Keegan. And the bodies are piling up. And Reacher is nowhere in sight.
This story is just as good as the source book. It is another great read in a really fun series. With the information we garner at the end, I wonder what will happen in Jack of Hearts, the next volume due out in this series. This boom was hard to put down and I read it in 2 sittings, staying up way later than I should have on a work night. Another excellent offering from Capri.
Read the review on my blog Book Reviews and More and reviews of other books by Diane Capri, and the Reacher Books by Lee Child.
I enjoy nothing better than picking up one of my favorite authors, falling into my chair, and feeling comfy in my sweats while I reacquaint myself with some of my favorite characters.
Reading one of Diane's novels is just like that, visiting old friends I'm fond of, being captured by the news in their lives, and engaging with them on a deeper level.
Everyone's here. Kim, Gaspar, the enigmatic boss, a few familiar characters, and just enough new ones to keep things moving along smoothly and fascinatingly. Kim's still on the hunt for Reacher, sent, for only God knows what reason, to Nowhere, SD, on another clue, another wild goose chase, another perhaps nefarious mission? All in search of a bad, bad man...or so she has been told. But, she's beginning to wonder.
Otto has a new partner. He has big shoes to fill, literally and figuratively. Can he? More importantly, can he be trusted? Even more importantly, will Kim finally meet Reacher face-to-face? If so, what will happen? Only time will tell. The action begins quickly and doesn't let up. There's an airplane crash, a prison break, a car thief, a war-weary and tired but ambitious lawyer, and more, all meticulously detailed in Diane's fully engaging style.
I love the way Diane Capri's plots rollout. They're intricate but believable but not overly complicated. Her characters are real people and become more real with each installment. The ends are satisfying and the storyline progresses with each novel without getting boring or formulaic. By the end of the book, I'm fully engaged, satisfied but wanting more.
This is good stuff! I was provided with a prepublication copy in exchange for an objective review. If not, I'd be first in line to buy this one...and the next...and the next. I have to admit, I'm a Capri fanboy. If you're looking for immersive, exciting novels, pick up any of hers. I promise you, you'll be as hooked as I am.
Disappointed that this book was not an entire story/episode - I recommend waiting until the next book is published, then read both. The book is ok, but it was like watching half of an episode of a TV series and then deciding to watch the rest six months later after you've forgotten what happened. Well, there appear to be a lot of authors doing this now, and it appears to be a "feature" of modern publishing. Publish books based on the number of pages rather than a story line or complete episode of a series. This trend appears to limit books to the equivalent of 3 minute pop songs. Sadly, this was a very negative trend for music lovers for more than a decade and it seems that authors have adopted this approach to publishing.
I'm reducing my star rating as a result.
Oh well nothing to do but wait until July. I do hope that Diane Capri will provide a warning if this is to happen again.
Diane Capri has penned one of her most interesting novels in the finding Jack Reacher series. In the first eight chapters we are introduced to the main characters in the book. First off we meet FBI Special Agent Kim Otto’s new partner, William Burke. Burke is a mystery to Otto and her friend and former partner, Carlos Gaspar, is trying to fill in the blanks about Burke. For the duration of the story, Burke throws some surprises at Otto. Some are interesting. Others are mysterious. We also meet three Federal Prisoners who are housed in a jail in South Dakota. One is a notorious Boston gang boss who has recruited two others to do his bidding during their incarceration and hopeful escape. Fern Olson, a lawyer, is the counsel for two of the three prisoners. Her role in the episode becomes more and more complicated as the events unfold. She becomes an important piece in the escape puzzle much to her displeasure and safety.
Chapter nine is explosive as the well-planned jail break unfolds and thrusts us into complicated situations where dangers and conflicts abound. It’s slowly becoming spring in South Dakota and dangerous animals and humans have to contend with each other regularly.
The rest of the book is where Capri does her best work. Developing the new characters and hinting at how they might be related to the activities of Reacher seven years, best described in the source novel, 61 Hours by Lee Child.
The story is fast moving and the plots and sub plots kept me on my toes as I raced through novel. I think it’s one of the best stories in the Search for Jack Reacher series.
Wow! This might be one of the best in this series. This time we have a Federal prison in South Dakota (yes, this is where Jack Reacher had his adventures in 61 Hours), a cargo plane, a retiring pilot, a criminal lawyer and her family, extremely nasty criminals, FBI Special Agent Kim Otto, her former partner, Gaspar, her “new” partner (who doesn’t seem to really fit but seems to have a better access to the “boss”), and, as always, Jack Reacher who is constantly just out of reach. This unique plot cannot be disclosed with spoilers. You have to read to believe. Just imagine all these factors combined into an explosive story. As always, the story begins with Otto being called out by the “boss” to be on an airplane in a few hours going to “who knows where.” She never receives her instructions until she is on the airplane. On her way to the airport she meets up with her new partner and they travel to South Dakota. From there the story explodes and continues non-stop to the last page. As far a Otto is aware she is simply searching for Reacher as well as trying to see if she can actually trust and work with her appointed partner. She has her usual list of contacts to speak with to discuss Reacher and his possible current location. If you are a fan of these novels, you already suspect that she will never even reach her final destination to begin the interviews before she is immersed in an on-going massive criminal plot. The reader is glued to the pages to see what happens next. Once you start this story it’s very hard to put it down until finished. This is a very talented author who never disappoints.
FBI Special Agent Otto has a new partner named Burke. Ex Navy Seal, solid in all aspects, but he still hasn't passed her trustworthy list. He's getting close though. He's riding a beef that sidelined from the FBI'S elite hostage rescue team. She and Burke are in North Dakota to interview a jailhouse lawyer. Does she have a past with Reacher? An interview is set up but then all he'll breaks loose. A plane has crashed into the prison wall near the small town of Bolton where Otto and Burke are headed. Inmates have escaped. The lawyer at he time of they plane crash has accidentally been locked in a holding room. When released she is sent home by the local police chief to be interviewed later. From this point on all he'll breaks loose!! Non stop action to the very last page!!! Enjoyed immensely!!!!
Based on the novel 61 Hours by Lee Child, is the Queen of Mystery and Suspense Diane Capri's new novel in her The Hunt for Reacher series, namely Jack Frost.
A desperate pilot, dying with terminal cancer has devised a way to leave his loving family with enough to get by on after he's gone. Unluckily for him, someone else has different ideas - and control of the plane! Who's the hacker? What are they doing at Bolton jail?
Special Agent Kim Otto has a new FBI partner, William Burke and their mission takes them to Bolton, officially searching for Reacher, but soon also getting involved in events at the jail. Why are they seeking lawyer Fern Olsen? Why do Otto and Burke head for Mount Rushmore?
As always Diane Capri's plot develops superbly and believably, as the tense action builds to a shattering climax. Unsurprisingly, it leaves Kim Otto with more questions than answers, when it comes to the ever-elusive, anti-hero Jack Reacher, after an identical time period - of 61 Hours!
Grab your copy of Jack Frost as soon as you can and see if you can work out what's next for Otto?
This book follows the formula of many of the Hunt for Reacher stories, where Kim is sent somewhere that Reacher once was but then gets wrapped up in another mystery that has nothing to do with him. It’s #14 in the series, so I’m pretty sick of the formula at this point and the fact that Kim is making so little progress. But my biggest problem with this book is that there are several chapters where the subtitle says Saturday but then Kim calls the school to see if her interviewee’s son is in class. I had noticed previously that the author messes up the times noted in the chapters’ subtitles also and I don’t understand how something like that doesn’t get caught before publishing. Hopefully the next few books will be better or I’ll be done with this series.
finished 5th november 2022 good read three stars i liked it kindle library loaner 2nd from capri and looks like caapri has 15 stories looking for jack reacher. this one is like the other one i read don't recall what number that one was this one is #11 and they read more or less the same several agents on the hunt many characters from the other in this one a few new ones. i like how the one agent takes it for granted that her every word phone call conversation and even location is assumed to be known by "the boss" as well as an advisor to the president. since there's 15 stories and this is 11 i assume jack reacher is not found in any of the others i've yet to read and the digital library has these two i've read only no more no less.
I think this is one of the best books of the series. Agent Kim Otto is again sent to search for Reacher and she has a new partner, Burke. I don’t think he’s a particularly good fit for her, but Gaspar is still working behind the scenes to help her out. As they reach their destination in North Dakota they see a lot of black smoke. It turns out that there is a huge fire at a federal prison. Besides their job of hunting for Reacher, they are involved with the fire, prisoner escapes and pretty much everything that goes along with it. I think there are more twists and turns in this book than any others in the series. I couldn’t put it down!!!
I couldn't wait to be able to read this newest addition to the Hunt for Reacher series and I wasn't disappointed in any way. Kim Otto was at her absolute best trying to deal with her new 'partner' Burke, an unexplained task, working in the dark with minimal support and an unprecedented disaster. Twists and turns galore! I sensed a new maturity in her character though and now am looking forward to where Jack of Hearts might take us. Thank you Diane for creating this fantastic series to entertain and titillate your readers!
(2 1/2). There's a whole series of books about agents trying to find Jack Reacher? Really? This was the first I had heard about this. The whole thing is fairly preposterous for us true Reacher Creatures but the story here is pretty darn solid. We have a really good bad guy, a pretty strong innocent victim and a couple of medium other folks. The story moves along with some very interesting twists and turns plus many scary moments on the "Big Brother" abilities of the federal government. A fun little read. Pretty good stuff.
One day is quick, even by my 'quick reading' standards. However, this chapter on the Hunt for was a quick and easy read.
Character development was good, the story moved, even if the tie-in to the past was a bit clunky (for me, might have to read the original story again!).
I won't put in any spoilers, but, really, Capri? Are we supposed to believe THAT happened? How? Reacher's tough, but c'mon...this is a bit of a stretch, ain't it?
Another hit for Diane Capri. I was looking forward to reading this book and I was not disappointed. Fast paced and had lots of great characters, The Hunt of Jack Reacher was a great read. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. If you haven't read any of this series by Diane Capri this is the time.
This series of books is actually far better than the Jack Reacher series itself. The latest Reacher story is poorly written and mostly slow moving while this latest book in the Hunt for Jack Reacher series moves along at a good pace and is well researched and well written.
This book is fast paced from the start and carries on in the same vein. A new partner imposed upon Kim Otto by “The Boss”, who she does not trust and whose misgivings are confirmed by her ex-partner’s warnings. Then, a jail break occurs where they are headed. So it goes on. This series gets better and better.
This was excellent read. Kim definitely had a lot to deal with between Cooper, Burke and Gasper. She handled the Burke situation perfectly. Cooper is nothing but an ass!!! Gasper is Mr. Reliable when it comes to helping Kim out. Just another excellent story!!! 10 stars 🌟 plus!!! Thanks, Carl Clause
Another amazing and suspenseful Jack Reacher story. People around him are murdered except one Killer. He’s definitely dangerous for Reacher. Kim Otto and her new partner come into the mix. Absolutely worth the read.
Being born and raised in South Dakota, this was a fun and exciting ride! The hunt for Jack Reacher never fails to entertain me wherever it's setting may be. Kim Otto and Burke are an unusual pairing. Cooper always a mystery. I anxiously await more.
Another quick two seat read. Kim and another new partner are following in the footsteps of Jack None Reacher. Unlike some of the others in this series, Kim doesn't really get to interview Fern and the others who knew Jack, and it's not clear how Fern would have known Reacher. Summer fluff.
This one brought me back on board with the parallel series. I was intrigued from the start to see how Capri would treat the characters and bring the twists together-it was not an obvious solution in the reading!
Base story 61 Hours FBI agent Lim Otto goes to Bolton Prison to interview a lawyer and an inmate, and witnesses a cargo plane crash into the prison and 40 prisoners escape. All but four prisoners are recaptured, and Otto goes after the missing prisoners.
Otto has a new partner, Burke, that helps tracking Reacher up to South Dakota. They are meant to meet with lawyer Olsen and an inmate at a federal penitentiary but all hell breaks loose. It makes you want to visit Mount Rushmore.
Capri does an outstanding job describing the Antagonist’s demise. The action is nonstop and you get various viewpoints. Otto’s question is left for the reader to decide. There are at least three loose ends that you are left to figure out on your own.
Diane Capri knocks it out of the park again! Kim Otto gets a new partner, sorta, but Gaspar is still there, sorta. Ya gotta read this book, you won't be sorry. I received this as an ARC.
