All used book stores are magical, but Enchanted Ink is something special. Helene has been in charge of the place ever since her aunt passed on; sometimes that means paperwork, sometimes that means stocking inventory, and sometimes that means banishing a force of evil back into the work of horror-fiction from which it emerged. Literate spiders spin webs in the ceiling, British men in deerstalker caps argue with silver-clad heroes in bubble helmets, and lurking around the edges is something dark and ugly that takes all of Helene's concentration to keep under control. Enchanted Ink blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, but Helene is used to not knowing what's real and what isn't. She thinks she's got a handle on things until her newest arrival, a tragic fantasy tale written by a murderess, tries to kill her through its pages. All books have power, but when they come through the doors of Enchanted Ink, that power takes on a new dimension.
I grew up in Waukegan, Illinois and upstate New York. My earliest memories are of re-imagining favorite cartoons on paper and inventing my own. I have a husband, three kids, and a ridiculous number of pets. I read adventure fantasy, horror, science-fiction, or anything else that takes me away from it all. I hope that my stories can do for others what they have done for me.
It's hard to summarize the plot of this fun, unique story, but I'll give it a go. Helene owns a book store, and she sees both characters from the books as well as ghosts in her shop. There's also a demon of sorts who ate her boyfriend and one of the ghosts. I'm a writer, and my characters take on a life of their own, so this book totally resonated with me. Great read!
This was an unusual haunting story where conventional ghosts, literary characters, and the power of imagination blended to create a new take on a classic theme. Since this novel is full of surprises, twists and turns, I'm not going to risk giving anything away here. I'll merely recommend you read it and let the inhabitants of Enchanted Ink come alive for you as they did for me.
