The Nordic Animist Year, by Dr. Rune Hjarnø Rasmussen
The Nordic Animist Year is an introduction to traditional seasonal animism from Northern Europe to explain and accompany the Runic Animist Wall Calendar. The information in the book is generic and can be used year after year.
North Europeans have a large reservoir of traditional animist knowledge which is largely forgotten or rejected. This book introduces the traditional seasonal animism. It describes the how the runic calendar works and how the cycles of the sun and the moon defines traditional life through a host of holidays, Heathen as well as folkloric. It is about 170 pages, has color illustrations and thorough explanations that offer the user a path into that animist knowledge that we have left behind when we became modern. The book can stand by itself as an introduction to seasonal animism, or it can work as the manual for the Runic Animist Wall calendar.
This year the Runic Animist Wall Calendar showcases the art of a selection of amazing artists working on the overall theme: “Runes”. Calendar layout and design by Ave Maria Nielsen.

A rare gem! Within one book is a clear and concise, in quite detail, reckoning for the Nordic Animist Year and aspects of Nordic Animism that are fundamental in observing, embracing and discussing these important parts of Nordic Cosmology. Whether a student, a teacher, a person striving to embrace and live the Old Northern European spiritual pathways, this book is key to important times of the year, rituals, regional differences, that are supported by literature and archeological findings. The use of the Runic Calander as a guide, along with these other aspects adds a dimension that leans into the Animist viewpoint. This subject can be daunting to some as in the past it has been overcomplicated and confused. Dr Rune Hjarnø Rasmussen has brought together the most reliable sources, and offered insights in how to understand ancient thinking, in order to now offer a very straightforward guide, without the confusion that centers around a past need to belive that there was one linear, static way throughout time for this region as there simply wasn't. There were and are many places within one large region which is why variations naturally emerge. Highly recommeded as this is a book and a resource you can use throughout the year and will do for time to come. It is not a book one would read once and leave on a shelf, rather it is a very handy guide, reference and overall a good-read.
A thoroughly engrossing study of Nordic and Germanic ancient traditions. Exploring the rituals and beliefs outside the epic mythology and incorporating elements of folklore. A must read for anyone looking to expand their knowledge of Nordic heathen traditions.
Wow. This is the most thorough evaluation of Northern European holidays I have come upon, fully backed up and cited with legitimate academic sources and great analysis... all while being understandable in layman terms.
A fantastic read. It really does a great job of delving into the Animist calendar without confusing. It helped me a lot to have the accompanying calender as a reference. A must read for a deep dive into the actual practice of paganism.
Very informative book for anyone wanting to look at the old scandinavian calendars/holidays and getting a glimpse into how it tells an animistic story between the land and the people who not just live on it but with it. Very fascinating to read the technical use of the circular calendar shape and how it relates to the luni-solar year. Will be using it as inspiration and reference as I 'reconstruct' an animist heathen calendar to use for my own spiritual/pagan practice.
This is a really cool reference to Nordic holidays and I love Rune's calendars! Definitely recommend! Also check out his YouTube channel "Nordic Animism"
