England, 1193. Unrest is spreading like smallpox. Richard I, ‘the Lionheart’, is imprisoned in Germany. His mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, is trying to raise the ransom for his release and is bleeding the country dry.
Meanwhile, following a brutal murder, Scarlet Underwood disguises herself as her dead brother and joins an infamous band of outlaws. But with the bounty hunter Guy of Gisborne closing in, Scarlet must fight for her life, the lives of her friends…and for England.
As with any retelling that takes liberties with characters and perspectives, there are dangers of offending the purists, or warping the tale for warping’s sake. This book though does a fine job of reframing the legend and recrafting a character into a far more engaging central figure. The pacing is quick and the action engaging, with no room for sentiment. All in all a fine adaptation and an enjoyable read.
A fast paced, gripping page turner for sure and one I would not have read if I had known the Robin Hood connection. To me, Robin Hood is a cheesy Errol Flynn movie. The description does not mention Robin Hood and his merry men but the mention of Eleanor of Aquitaine was a big enough hook to reel me in. Who is K A Worsley?
I was expecting just a light romance, and ended up with so much more! The storytelling, characterization - all of it was fantastic. Thrilled that I was expecting a good book, and actually got a fantastic one!
