For nearly 20 years, people have turned to the Guide to Prayer series for a daily rhythm of devotion and personal worship. Thousands of readers appreciate the series' simple structure of daily worship, rich spiritual writings, lectionary guidelines, and poignant prayers. Like its predecessors, A Guide to Prayer for All Who Seek God will become a treasured favorite for those hungering for God as the Christian year unfolds. Each day offers guidance for an opening affirmation, a petition of prayer, and daily scripture selections. The "Readings for Reflection" reach back to early Christian classics and include voices from recently published works. Excerpts from writers such as Frederick Buechner, Joyce Rupp, Henri Nouwen, Mother Teresa, Howard Thurman, C.S. Lewis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, John Wesley, and many others are arranged in weekly themes. Job and Shawchuck also include spiritually grounded explanations of the seasons of the church year to introduce each section of the book. This is a marvelous gift book for friends, family, or yourself for any occasion.
This book has been an anchor for my devotional life this year. Following the liturgical calendar of scripture reading with prayer prompts and short devotional readings from a variety of authors, this book is set up to be a sustainable guide throughout the year. It begins in Advent and has a range of dates for each week, meaning it can be used year after year and I fully plan on reading through again this year.
The first time I looked at this devotional. I decided that I preferred the very similar A Guide to Prayer for Ministers and Other Servants. My wife had switched to this devotional after her St Ignatius group leader gave her a copy. As she was dying from cancer, I found myself helping her do her devotions by reading from this book. I found that it touched my heart in this season in a way that A Guie to Prayer for Ministers didn't, so I have switched for this season. If I find myself using this for several years I will upgrade it to 5 stars.
It is a great devotional, has many deep truths about living for Christ, and has reflections from "spiritual forefathers" from many different time eras.
