The Bad Guys #6

High Gloom

Rate this book
It all comes down to this: kill or be corpsed.

Clyde Hatchett has known he’s had a corpse-king inside him, slowly trying to take over his body and raise an army of undead for a while now. And while that may seem like a rather, um, urgent matter to attend to, it’s only now, after being forced out of Glaton by his best friends and then having to rescue someone’s sister from a bad marriage, that he’s actually in a place to deal with it.

And he better deal with it quickly, since his entire left hand is starting to look like it belongs to the Crypt-Keeper.

But Gloomguard, where the mage Clyde needs lives, operates on a completely different plane than anywhere else in Vuldranni. Everyone is out for themself, and there’s no such thing as doing a favor. So in order to even talk to the mage, Clyde must embark on a series of preposterous quests he doesn’t have time for and isn’t guaranteed to survive.

High Gloom is the gritty sixth installment in the Bad Guys LitRPG series. If you like fast-moving adventure, profound magic, and witty necromancers, you’ll love Eric Ugland’s latest novel.

I don't know how he does it

Honestly, I don't know how Eric Ugland continues to put out such consistent, entertaining and volumous work. Every time I turn around, either the GG or the BG series has a new book out.

I bet he must have 4 hands.

Some Good, Some Bad

The world, organizations, and crazy mysteries are fascinating. The humor is frequent and engaging.
Unfortunately, the characters languish. Some are killed off, seemingly because the author didn't know what to do with them. Others are dismissed and vanish in travels. The rest putter around behind Clyde, doing nothing much. Clyde continues his ongoing panic attack, though his suicidal courage is smart enough to try and survive.
The ending is a cliffhanger, and I am not sure I care to see the landing.

Detailed Amazing Action and Depth

Depth. See what I did there? Aww yeah...

Once again our hapless and beleaguered thief hero finds himself in over his head, and pushed from one crazy adventure and/or dramatic action scene into another. (Errol Flynn eat your heart out.) while Montana simply ploughs his way through obstacles, Clyde has to think and dance. Then trudge. Lots of trudging. Perseverance thy name is Clyde. The two of them are the respective embodiments of brains and brawn, but the fantastic writing shows not just how that can win, but also where it falls short. No matter how capable you are, some things will always be out of your hands. Personal losses included. You really need to read both series. Laugh, sigh, smile, and cry with the rest of us. Highly recommended (15+)!

Certainly better than the last book. Certainly better than whatever The Good Guys series has devolved into...but that’s not saying much. And, if the ending holds, The MC will have a bit of a reset that might actually be beneficial to the overall story, as this series was having a lot of the same issues as The Good Guys. Still, little improvements are better than none

Solid meh

This was waited for but still feels like the author doesn't know where the story he's writing is going. Not thrilled with this one or by the new title for the next. Dont care for an MC that has to restart. Next level bs is what that is.

This series has been consistently good, even improving, as it progresses, which is quite a feat over six volumes so far. I think the key is that for an overpowered main character in a LitRPG series, Clyde Hatchett still faces overwhelming challenges through which he learns and develops, not just in terms of levels and skills but also in insight and wisdom and self-knowledge. That keeps the narrative fresh.

Better

Than the average in the series, or the accompanying series. If it were food, it would be chain restaurant level.

Completely ruined by more unnecessary character death

The first time this author senselessly, unnecessarily, and just plain randomly killed off a character in a previous book, I decided to take it as one really poor judgment call that he just couldn't figure out how to make into anything resembling story progression. Well, rather than learning from a seriously bad mistake, in this one he killed TWO at once for no reason or benefit whatsoever. One of those just so happened to be my favorite character, who had JUST started having a point, a backstory and a place in the plot. Realistically, the other one has just kind of been pointless from the beginning, but at least he was a dependable element. I probably won't go on reading this. You definitely failed, author. And really? TWO people randomly eaten by fraudulent upholstery? And woooo, we toast the ridiculously senseless deaths, mc whines and pouts hardcore for about three pages, and then he's ONWARD and everything is just peachy keen again. Weak tea is insulted by what you just cooked up. Jorn deserves a better writer.

Good, but the errors bug me like crazy

I enjoyed seeing how things are progressing with Clyde, getting to see what’s going to happen to him in the Gloom (even if I’m not happy about it), and just in general seeing more about this world.

What holds me back from reading it higher is that there are a lot of errors in the book. Missing words that make a sentence impossible to decipher, a few sentences that looks like the thought changed half way through, or where they stop before finishing the thought, etc.

Things like this really break the immersion for me, and make a book less enjoyable. Either a better editor is needed before these books go to publishing, or some beta readers should be invited to go over it before release and get these issues caught.

A great series...but this book leaned towards filler

This is a great series and I enjoyed the first few books. However this one leans heavily towards filler. Feels like something designed to drag things out. Some of the plot twists were a bit out of the blue and lacked context. Not precisely deus ex machine but very very close and that made it less enjoyable than books 1-3

High Gloom
The Bad Guys Series: Book 6
By Eric Ugland

Overview:
While the first half of the book continues from where the awesomeness of Book 5 left off, there were several things in the second half that irritated me (covered in the Meh section below). This was the first in the series that I rated less than 4/5 stars: 3/5 stars.

Summary:
Clyde made it to Gloomguard and now he needs to figure out how to make it to the guy who can take away his Corpse King curse. But of course he’ll be doing many things for others along the way. I mean, it’s Eric Ugland we’re talking about here: going off on tangents and side quests is a given.

The Good:
* Clyde continues his bad guy streak, killing a slaver after torturing him for information. Yeah!
* Finally, Clyde encounters the Dark Goblins.
* I’m hoping the Corpse King and Clyde will come to some sort of arrangement where they can co-live in one body. It would be a shame for the bad guy to lose his necromantic powers.
* The frog mage shop interlude was very entertaining and am glad that Clyde now has an un-fillable knapsack of sorts.
* The heads of monsters that Montana puts up taxidermy style in his halls are given a name in this book: Title Trophy. I point this out because I’m excited about the continuation of this practice in the series.
* Yay, more of the patron god storyline being fleshed out with the Mad God (who apparently is the god of Adventures in disguise).

The Meh:
* Haven’t seen any raising of the dead lately.
* The maze was written kind of confusingly, it was hard to follow and I didn’t really enjoy it.
* Sad to see 2 more companions bite it. Hoping Clyde will figure out a way to revive them.
* The plot elements revealed during the Mad God conversation felt made up on the spot as opposed to following a series-spanning story arc. Like, “let’s add this in now to explain events that happened 3 books ago” vs. “events in the last 3 books have been leading up to this point now”.
* I’m a little put off by the fact that Clyde didn’t use a single necromantic spell in his considerable arsenal during the harvesting foray of the Blood Crystals.
* I’m also a little disappointed that the author chose to have the entire party go on a drunken bender after the deaths of Mornax and Yorn. It was quite out of character for the author’s writing style who himself appears to be an advocate of abstinence (myself included). Not only did that take them out of action for a chunk of the ending, but it would’ve been nice to see them redeem themselves as a party as Clyde went back out into the Gloom.
* I felt like a lot more could’ve been done with Rose. Instead she served as what purpose exactly? Some highly experienced but mysterious Gloom veteran that Clyde made small talk with throughout the book?
* The end of the Corpse King felt very anti-climatic. Kind of like how the revelation of the Master’s true identity in GG series book 10? So much build up for a lackluster ending.
* Speaking of lackluster endings, the actual end was dumb. Instead of a seat-gripping cliffhanger like some of the other books, it was very un-suspenseful.

Good Guys and bad guys review 04/2021

Hello! Thanks again for your time!
It has been a couple of months since I’ve read them all, that’s why I won’t review them individually.

The good:
The author is charismatic and funny, the fight scenes in both books are cool, the skills are mostly fun. For instance, improvised weapons skill is hilarious, the plot never stagnates, in fact it’s very, very fast paced.
Some characters are likeable, the kobolds are the best! So comedic!
I also enjoy the creature comforts that Montana gets during the books, I delighted with his great shower, infinite soda and pizza. I felt as emotional as I think Montana did.

The bad:
It feels like he just throws stuff around ,that perhaps he may use at some point, you shouldn’t expect it anytime soon. Which frustrates me to no end. I think he just throws around as many as possible plot points, so he can pick them up when he ends the current plot. Skills that don’t get used until several books later, if ever. Like Clyde’s summon familiar. Reminds me a bit of “The Land” By Mr. Kong.

Some other examples of that: Book one of The Bad Guys, Clyde decided to keep the mechanisms of the many noob crossbows that he looted “to make something out of it later” and never mentioned again, or the coins that he got to get checked with his fencer or find out who they belong to,, and many other things like this happens in both books. Very frustrating to a reader that expect certain things to happen.

It's like he is so worried to have material for more books that he doesn't focus on the main plot.

I'm so very mad with all the " Oh, there's still the basement to investigate".
Also the dialogues, especially in the good guys, specially between Nikolai and Montana, it got old and annoying fast, lots of F words in those.

Final considerations:
All in all, I definitely recommend both series , I had fun reading the books, even though it can be frustrating to a reader that expects things that have been introduced to happen or due to the dialogues, I believe the author good storytelling skills, overshadow all of it’s flaws making them a highly entertaining series. I await eagerly for the next installment in both series, particularly for “Back to One”(BadGuys) that ending was the biggest cliffhanger that Mr.Ugland threw yet.

This is my first review ever, I’m still learning the language and grammar, thank you for the patience and I’ll edit this as I learn more.

Alert

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Second, I am not a bot...at least I don’t think I am. Yes this is copy pasta (just learned that term, so fun!) simply because I feel like any book I read deserves acknowledgement but at the same time my feelings on reviews conflict with the normal review process.

I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. If you are a potential reader, just stop reading now and take the above as all you need to know. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

If you are a member of the IAK Guild (thanks, Jason) or part of the review police, feel free to criticize me and challenge my philosophy on reviewing art. I think we all love a good debate. The forums are open and I welcome your comments. I was wrong in my previous request to get you to stop. Your blatant disregard for that request has led to some fun discussions. Growth is important for us all.

Cheers

Clyde Hatchett finally reaches Gloomguard in the quest for the mage that might be able to rip the corpse king out of him and keep him from being possessed by a being who just might have the power to take over the world. Unfortunately, seeing this wizard is not as simple as asking for his address. In Gloomguard, everyone wants him to prove himself through a series of quests in the extremely dangerous territory outside the fortified settlement.

Ugland continues to write a very exciting adventure series in which Hatchett must continue to use his brains to survive crises well above his level to vanquish. There are a few highly interesting characters introduced in this novel, as well as the continuing cast, but none quite so interesting as the mage that Hatchett is looking for and the man responsible for the highly dangerous environment of Gloomguard.

This is a great one.

Saving his soul is of high importance to those around him

In an interesting turn of event those who care about Clyde, decide the best course of action is to poison him and send him down the river on a quest to save himself from the corpse king inside him. Or die trying.
Which may be the outcome for him and many others as crossing the seas is always a dangerous proposition. Dangerous sea creatures, monsters and even beings live in the expansive oceans and Clyde is no sailor.
And there’s a desert full of monsters, a mutiny, sea battles and dungeons to be it all or deliver Clyde to salvation and remove the evil undead attempting to take over his body. Just another fun day in the life of an adventuring rogue.

Another great story

What is awesome about this story is that the novellas are largely self contained stories. In this addition we see the quest to remove the corpse king reach the finale - for good or ill we will see what happens when you reach the gloom and have to find a solution to a problem before being possessed.

It is a thrilling story that concludes nicely. I am excited for the next in the series - though it is scheduled for August - but part of that reason is the parallel / companion series is set for the next story in February.

I will say this... we are reaching a point where the stories are close - and I imagine will soon collide. Though we will see...

It's always great

I was so close to giving this four stars due to editing. It really needed another pass. There were a lot of small, errors that could have been easily fixed. If an editor is needed, I volunteer as tribute. However, I obviously still gave it 5 stars since it was just that good. This book is fantastic and I loved every minute of it. Mr. Ugland, if you do end up pursuing that bestiary project, Kickstarter may be a great place to explore it. A lot of bestiaries and similar books have launched from there to offset the costs of all those illustrations and other production intricacies. Until next time Vuldranni.

Wicked read

Eric said in the end of the last book how excited he was about this one and he certainly did not fail to live up to that. This book not only ended up being longer than most of his other books it was also just as great and action-packed and full equipped that leave you chuckling but also feeling for the characters that struggle. Authors created a fantastic world that I will definitely be reading to my kids when they get older. Keep up the good work I look forward to all of your future books

Amazing book, but that ending….

Those endings leave a bad taste in my mouth. I mean the book was a solid 5 stars but why not finish the plot arc and the end the book on some other cliff hanger. Seems weird and unfulfilling.

Feels like I've just killed the final boss in a raid tier. Had a blast and loved the ride, but I can't see my loot or achievements until the next expansion launches.

I am very much OK with cliffhangers as long as you at least conclude the arc of the books plot. All that build up for something vague is weak. :/

Still going strong

The Corpse King tries to take over, but then the MC met a dragon and a mad god. What could go wrong? Sadly, more allies got wacked but on the positive, new friends are being made. Still, the MC hasn't gotten a girlfriend yet, but he's busy taking care of business. You know, trying to not get taken over by the corpse king. Good thing he ran into that master litch who invited him to visit the Shadowlands. Lol - gotta read the book to see what I'm talking about.

Really wish Mormax hadn’t been killed off

The story plot continues to be fresh, engaging and adventurous. The writing continues to deserve 5-stars. There are two secondary characters who die in book 6. Both were well liked characters with depth and interesting aspects. Mormax was one of them. His character was one of the more interesting secondary characters and I think it was a mistake for Mr Ugland to have eliminated him. My guess is that new secondary characters will become visible in book 7.

I find it interesting comparing Clyde to Montana, Clyde is more subtle and goes under the radar while Montana is loud and obvious at least feat wise. If you think of all the stuff Montana has done. Clyde though is well on his way to being an archmage with how easily he is picking up magic. I so hope he doesn't lose his magic after he got rid of that corpse king. That would totally suck for him. He spent so much time to get what spells he has, to lose all of them would suck.

Another Good Book

The continued tradition of this author to produce good lit RPG books continues with this book. The story continues from where it left off and ends on a slight cliffhanger, which annoys me because then I’ll have to wait till August to read the next book in the series on the upside though I only have to wait till August to read the next book in the series and it’s just not some nebulous day that I have to wait for so that’s nice.

Just a Great Book

Another great book by Eric Ugland. It has everything that makes a great litrpg.

The only true issue I have with the book is that it has some profanity. I must say that the amount of profanity in the author's books seems to have decreased with each book. That's good.

The other problem isn't actually a problem. Why do I need to wait to Aug for the next book? Must I wait all that time to find out what happens next? Oh well I suppose I must.

Seriously This is a good book and I highly recommend it.

So unique in every book!

I'm loving this latest adventure with Clyde (a hero named Clyde is funny all its own) I've read every book in both series and i can't say enough how the writing and dialog are so unique. While there is tension in the adventures it's tastefully done with good comedy. Last book seemed a lil jumbled but made up for in this one. HELLO DRAGON, did i mention the Dragon! Lol

A Dark Adventure

This book is a bit darker than Clyde’s other adventures (I don’t just me the Gloom). There are more characters introduced but also, sadly, Clyde loses some of those close to him. I like that the story delves more into Clydes emotions and we see him have to deal with loss, overcome new nasty monsters, and figure out what his “why” is. That skill list is getting absurdly long. I don’t think he even thinks to use most of those skills.

inconsistent

Generally I enjoyed this book, however there were times when a scene happened without a reason besides 'it's time for an action sequence'. I read the final of the deer scene 3 times and it didn't make any more sense the last time than the first.
Anyway, Clyde leaves home to get rid of his curse and has adventures. Some people die. Clyde feels bad for a few pages, then it's back to work.
I'm still liking the series. Tom out

Loved it! We got loot we got some bartering we got good times and bad. Pre order is already in. My only complaint is I gotta wait 10 weeks for another great book to read. Come on! 15 pages a day, never a day off, boom! A book a month chop chop my man

Another solid book, with Clyde's snark reduced to a reasonable level so I can read it without getting annoyed. Good development, even if the quest-to-finish-a quest-to-finish etc. can get a bit wearing, but it makes sense in context and even the MC notes the frustration of it.

Look forward to more of this, and the Good Guys books too.
