Tennessee, 1830. Floyd Logan yearns to go west. So after the sixteen-year-old deadeye impresses a wagon train captain by winning his first turkey shoot, he’s thrilled when he’s offered the opportunity to go to work on the Santa Fe Trail. But before they can leave town, Floyd is ambushed by a cowardly outlaw who beats him and steals his prize pistols. Undeterred and committed to fulfilling his dream, the strapping young man eagerly accepts a role as a scout for the expedition. But facing hostile natives, a devastating prairie fire, and the ruthless low-lifes that attacked him back home, his goal of reaching the Shining Mountains may see him fitted for a pine box. Can Floyd survive the untamed land to find his life’s true calling? Soul of a Mountain Man is the spellbinding first book in the Logan Mountain Man Western series. If you like fast-paced action, struggles on the wild frontier, and justice served with hot lead, then you’ll love Donald L. Robertson’s gritty tale.
I am a retired Southwest Airlines pilot. My wife Paula and I, live with our Chihuahua, Gabe, in Mesa, Arizona in a 55+ Golf Resort even though we don't play golf. It affords my wife a very active lifestyle while I spend my time writing. As a child, I enjoyed going to the Saturday matinee and spending the day watching westerns and daydreaming about the old west. I shared a passion with one of my aunts and read every western I could get my hands on. John Wayne was my favorite actor and Louis L'Amour my favorite writer. I miss those days where the good guys win, they treat the ladies right, have honor and are trustworthy. So, in about 2014, I started writing my own westerns and became quite shocked that people enjoyed them. I am so thankful to those of you who read my books, take the time to write reviews and email me. John Wayne said it best when he said "without you, I wouldn't be here". Please accept my deepest appreciation.
THE STORY OF A YOUNG MAN WHO IS DETERMINED TO BECOME A MOUNTAIN MAN
☆☆☆☆☆
Sixteen year old Floyd Logan has dreamed of the mountains and a life as a mountain man for most of his young life. He's worked to hone his skills in the wilderness outside of his hometown town of Limerick, Tennessee. His shooting ability is second to none from miles around if not hundreds or thousands of miles. His parents and his older brothers have helped to perfect his skills and to become an honest and trustworthy man who would stand up for others, do what's right, and bow down to no man.
Soul of a Mountain Man: Logan Mountain Man Western Series - Book 1 (A Logan Mountain Man Series) by Donald L. Robertson is a well-written story of the young man Floyd Logan and his life as a wagon driver, a scout for the wagon train from Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe. His employer Hugh and lead scout Jeb take Floyd under their wing to teach him the additional skills he'll need in the Rocky Mountains to survive everything from evil thugs, deadly Indians, bears and other wildlife, and the cold hardships of the mountains and the weather all at the sametime teaching him to trap and control his anger that could possibly cost him his life.
This story and storyline is one that will appeal to anyone who enjoys a good book, action, characters with high morals, and historical fiction. You will be drawn into the story from the beginning and will be wanting to start the second book as soon as you finish the first. It's a book that I enjoyed reading and I have already started the second book in this series. I too hope you will enjoy reading this book as much as I have.
Quotes:
Fatherly advice; "Always be honest with your fellow man, protect women, kids, and the mistreated, and step aside for no man."
"But life brings both heartache and happiness. It's not for us to choose when each arrives."
"Many times, previous planning can offset one mistake."
"When a new something was needed, along comes an inventor to make it happen."
A well told story of a boy who wants to be a mountain man. The action begins in Tennessee, moves to Independence, Missouri, a wagon train to Santa Fe and finally to the mountains. There are friendly and hostile Indians, killer outlaws and a number of good people. Fine character development and interesting action.
I really enjoyed this first volume. In my youth, I daydreamed of being a mountain man of the 1800’s. Books like this take me literarily where chronologically I was not meant to be. No, it’s not high literature, but it is good storytelling about a fascinating epoch in our nation’s history.
Good words in a row, but I guess folks aren't interested in a story about the average kid who can barely hit the side of a barn. I'm envious of the kid that has so many God given gifts, it does make a nicer tale.
This is a well written western story. Set in 1828 following Floyd Horatio Logan as he turned 16 and grew into a man. Since a small boy he thought of becoming a Mountain Man trapping in the snowy mountains in the West and being on his own.
Then his dream came true, he was invited to go out west with a few mountain men and a small wagon train. He will face some tough times. His first experience was fighting the with Cheyenne Indians when he gets cut in the face which leaves a bad scar. But he's not ready to give up.
The Mountain Men got back to their wagon near the Arkansas River, there were the biggest wooly buffalos that they had ever seen. Most of the young mountain men didn't know how to kill, clean or skin the large beautiful animals. Some friendly Indians helped them as they learned by helping the indians.
This was an easy to read, fast paced and interesting throughout the novel. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to everyone even teens and preteens. I am looking forward to the next one in the series.
What I like about Donald Robertsons's books are they are like the westerns I grew up with. Simple, fast paced clean. The first adult book I ever read at the age of 8 was Louis L'Amour's Kiowa Trail. Having read all of Mr. Robertson's books in the last couple of months I was really looking forward to this title. This book takes place in a earlier time frame than most of the westerns I have read but having read a few mountain man books in the last year or so I felt pretty prepped for this one. I enjoyed the story flow and the many plot changes, many more plot changes than than I expected, but I don't mean that as a complaint. I thought it was a good story and it made a native westerner homesick in places. Having exhausted all of my favorite Louis L'Amour books it's nice to find a new writer who's books could pretty much fit seamlessly into the same shelf.
“Soul of a Mountain Man” is another winner for the up and coming Western writer Don Robertson. It is full of surprises, suspense and intrigue from start to finish. Another outstanding chapter in the Logan Family saga and adventure of a young Floyd who dared to live his dream of exploring the great Western mountains. Like others before him, he fought nature and man and blazed the trail for his family and others to follow.
It is refreshing to read a story, in the genre of Zane Gray, Louis L’Amour and Elmer Kelton, void of the lurid vulgarity and sensationalism that seem to permeate the rhetoric of many of today’s Western writers.
Sixteen year old Floyd Logan from Limerick Tennessee dreams about mountains in the West. Hugh Brennan notices Floyd’s shooting skills and invites him to accompany his train on the way to Santa Fe. He appoints Floyd to join Jeb Campbell - experienced mountain man, as a scout for the train. As they travel Jeb teaches Floyd scouting skills, talks to him about Rockies and invites him to a beaver hunt. After a short stay and training in Santa Fe, Floyd is heading to San Juan Mountains to join Jeb. However there are Indians, outlaws and wild animals he will need to watch for. It is a wholesome story.
I have read all of Donald Robertson's books. This is another in his Ligan series. His characters are all well drawn and I always admire the protagonists. They decent people who try to do the right thing. They are not supermen or superwomen, but believable characters. I always buy his books because I know that I will read them again. I will say that I received advance copy from the author in return for an honest review which this is. What is telling is that I also bought tge book.
Being a fan of history and the Santa Fe Trail, I especially enjoyed this book. I found it difficult to put down and completed reading it in two sessions. If you enjoy tales of the Mountain Men this book will appeal greatly. It has all of the elements you could want with adventure, courage, honorable men of great integrity and the terribly cruel men as well as battles with indians, which every compelling book of this period must have. You will enjoy this book but be prepared, because it is hard to put down.
Floyd Logan is a 16 yr old boy who is a crack shot with a rifle, but is a brash young man with an explosive temper when provoked. His loving family means a lot, but the mountains have always called him to live and explore. He has a lot of learning to do, and will come across enemies that will leave scars for life.
This is an incredible story! Happy to rate it 5 Stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Entertaining western novel that I have come to expect from Mr. Robertson. I have read most, if not all, of his books and enjoyed them all. I'm about ready to re-read the series, while I await the next installment.
After reading the Logan Family four book series, it was interesting to have a glimpse into the life of a far younger Floyd Logan....where it showed how he developed into the mountain man he became.
Now this is the kind of book I have been looking for ever since I started with Kindle! Most books anywhere near as good cost money, and on my small fixed income, I can't afford to buy them. Thank you, Mr. Robertson for granting me the privilege of reading your work!
I decided to go back to the beginning story having read Logan's Word first. I am so glad I did! This is right up there with many of the famous authors of Mountain men. Loved it!
Kind of slow at first but it got better about halfway through. Anxious to read the next one now that he finally got to the mountains. Good characters. Justice prevails.
The action was spot on. I could imagine myself right there going through everything. The Logan series is my favorite along with it’s author D.R. Can’t wait for the next one!!!!!!!!
Uncle Floyd. Didn't even know I wanted to read his back story but turns out I did. Perfect prequel to the Logan family saga. A wise mentor once told me that one of the most overlooked keys to success is people have to like you. If they like you they will go out of their way to see you succeed. This was the key to Floyd's success. His character, honor and strength made him a young man who earned respect and trust. Add hard work and perseverance to that and you have a successful character and a great jumping off point to the Logan family saga. All 5 star for me.
If you like westerns and only the best will do you can't go wrong with a Louis Lamour or Donald L Robertson book.
I've been inhaling Western books over the quarantine. Just happened upon this mountain man series. It was well written; I was impressed and will read more of them. Not so much cowboy western, but still has plenty of gun play and chances for our heroes to chase Indians and to bring the evil white men to justice. Set during the times of exploration of the Western Rockies, the early 1830's, isolation and severe weather are the bigger challenges of life during those times. Development of improved weapons, would be a popular interest to readers.
Good story with interesting main character, however The supporting cast really brings the story together. The main character is more of a coming-of-age and leading up to a Legends of sorts of the Old West. That's good details, a little slow pace, but the story is fun and entertaining. All around a good book for the genre and will probably read the second book in the series.
Start this on Friday night if you're working from home. Otherwise, you may find yourself looking up and suddenly you're hours behind on your work. You start this coming of age story thinking Sackett and finish thinking i need more Logan.
Soul of a Mountain Man: A Logan Family Western -Book 5
This book has love for fellow man in extreme conditions. The wagon train has problems, but gets through. This author weaves a tale of trials and makes you can't wait to read the next paragraph to see if the person he is writing about is going to come through with his scalp still intact. I enjoyed this book.
A story of a young man growing up to become a mountain man.
I enjoyed this story about young Logan finding his way across the country on his way to the mountains he loved. His adventures are to be enjoyed by the reader. Donald Robertson writes a great story and I have read a few enjoying every one.
The author started these books after writing a few of the Logan books (Josh, Will, Callum, etc.) Sometimes I wished I had read these books first. Both series are excellent and finally gives Floyd’s story. His growth and background from the age of 16 on. On to the next two!
This was a great story about Floyd Logan and his adventures on the western frontier as he makes his way west to the Rocky Mountains. It was well written, full of action and hard to put down. I hadn't read any of Robertson's work before but after reading this book I look forward to reading more. I would definitely recommend it!
A remarkable young man who kept his wits about him with Indian s robbers everything he learned he kept in his young mind and used them as he traveled. Thanks good story
Once again Mr Robertson has provided a fun exciting trip to the past for me. The story is well researched with quality characters and an exciting story to match. It just ended too darned soon for me! Thank you for fun reading!
