Some of these meditations were really good but some were too speculative and I was annoyed at the end when Father had us "...walking with Mary and Joseph as they frantically find a cave that will provide shelter for Jesus' birth." Nope.
Excellent way to get into the habit of daily meditation during Advent ! A simpler way of doing Ignacious study. I would recommend this book for busy people that want to make a connection with God during the busy Advent season.
This book started out good, and I thought I would really love it. But I thought there was a disconnect between the readings and the Bible passage assigned over and over. Like, "Why did he pick that Bible chapter? Why does this feel random and unrelated?"
I also found this book focused bizarrely on things that were not in Scripture and not necessarily the case. Like how good Mary's singing voice was. Or a scene of Mary and Joseph touching each other's faces. Or how Mary and Joseph made camp for the day on the road to Bethlehem and started talking to each other about how worried and fatigued they were. Or how much St. Joseph must have struggled with chastity.
That one really bothered me. First of all, I had to stop reading with my kids. The topic was not child-approproate, which was unexpected. Second, I felt it was very disparaging of the amount of grace I imagine would have been given St. Joseph, who we often call Mary's "most chaste spouse." It feels super awkward to spend several days thinking about Joseph's "unmet desire" for Mary. Come on. It felt irreverant and lacking belief in how God can supernaturally assist, direct, and fulfill someone in their virginity. Especially for St. Joseph.
Recommend? Yes! I would say a committed daily prayer life would be a necessity to complete this book on time during the busy season.
This advent book poises thoughtful mediations that include additional reading from scripture to ponder during your daily prayer. There were many powerful reflections on the Holy Family and the marriage upon which it’s built. I will be going back and re-reading this in Advents to come.
For some reason, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I did the last two. It might be where I am in my life now vs. the last two Advents... but it also might be the overly sweet and perfect interpretation of how everything happened with Mary and Joseph. Or maybe it’s just not what I needed this year.
Late on finishing this after battling Covid within our home but definitely felt was read right when I needed it most. Lifted my spirits greatly. Christmas is not about a holiday or even a day but it’s about a person. Jesus can be part of your day everyday! No better gift then that! ❤️
The content was very captivating.I liked the format and peacefulness this brought me. It helped me immensely prepare my heart for the coming of Christ and clueless on the commercial business and usual manic of the Christmas period.
