Time to become a Living Weapon

Necrotis has raised an armada to make our sector tremble. Hundreds of warships have begun to overwhelm the Confederacy, and we don't have nearly enough magic or ships to defend every world.

Our only real hope is resurrecting the Vagrant Fleet. We have the Spellship, and our demon allies control the Earthmother's Bulwark. I'm the captain of the Word of Xal, our most powerful offensive ship in the fleet. We're strong, but Necrotis is stronger, and the gap is growing.

If I'm going to keep my people alive I need to be able to fire the Word's main spellcannon. I need to be able to deliver the kill shot against Necrotis. I need to become an Eradicator.

I've been invited to train with the Ifrit on the world Nebiat, deep in Krox territory. Every day I spend mastering destruction magic more Confederate worlds fall. They're counting on me. I will not let them down.

By day I am an iPhone developer architecting the app used to scope Stephen Colbert’s ear. By night I am Batman. Ok maybe not. One can dream though, right?

I’ve been writing since I was six years old and started inflicting my work on others at age 18. By age 24 people stopped running away when I approached them with a new story and shortly thereafter I published my first one in the Rifter.

Wait you’re still reading?

Ok, the facts I’m supposed to list in a bio. As of this writing I’m 38 years old and live just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the beautiful town of Mill Valley. If you’re unsure how to find it just follow the smell of self-entitlement. Once you see the teens driving Teslas you’ll know you’re in the right place.

I live in a tiny studio that I can cross in (literally) five steps and don’t own an oven. But you know what? It’s worth it. I love developing iPhone apps and if you want to work in San Francisco you accept that rent for a tiny place costs more than most people’s mortgage.

If you and about 2 million other people start buying my books I promise to move out of Marin to a house in the redwoods up in Guerneville. No pressure. Wait that’s a lie. Pressure.

Jerek is once again Captain of the Word of Xal

Surrounded by his friends, Jerek takes time to learn to be an Eradicator, learning Implode, although he really wants Disintegrate. Implode will do for a while. Jerek is learning and doesn't recognize how he is changing. Not only leaving his youth behind, but gaining in confidence and stature has changed the boy into the man he was to be: the commander his people needed. His friends are growing also, responsibility forcing the changes slowly but surely. Briff has molted and become an adult dragon with powers to match. Miri has become Jerek's preferred bed-warmer, not that anything else happens. Vee is inured with Inura, following him around like a puppy dog waiting for a treat. Rava (Jerek's sister, remember her) and Briff seem to have a 'thing'. Even Seket - a paladin of Inura transported through time from the height of the dragonflights to serve under Jerek - has accepted the changed Jerek and calmly takes direction from him. Aboard the Word of Xal, the crew flies to Colony 3 to stop Necrotis from poisoning another Confederate food production planet.
In 5 books, you get to know the characters intimately. Sometimes that's a good thing because you know what they're capable of doing. But you also get to know their weaknesses and how well or poorly trained they are. Even with all their foibles, I've fallen in love with this rag-tag crew. I've gotten to know them, I've seen them fight, I've seen them fall, I've seen them strong and helped pull when they're weak. I've grown with them from the humble students and gamers to the mighty fighters and strategists that traverse the galaxy to help win in the big battles.

The storyline is an amazing stretch of ups and downs with twists and turns galore. It leads our heroes to unwinable scenarios and dares them to challenge fate. It guides them unerringly forward to battles and wars, to confrontations and judgements, to life and death. The storyline gives our characters time for some pleasant interludes and denies them the comfort with untimely interruptions. Back and forth, up and down, in and out, the storyline determines fate.

I am dying to read the next volume in this series! I can't wait! These tales are tremendous. A great read!

Death rising

This book was terrific. It had many dramatic scenes that were suspenseful. I loved how the author makes it difficult for our characters because of politics. The main characters from the previous series are these major power players and they basically tie their hands back because it is the right thing to do and not the easy path. The author also points a theme of actions have consequences and love how that is addressed. I love that the author acknowledges that these consequences have implications that no one can predict. One thing I did not like was sort of the romance plots that did not to happen suddenly, and without sufficient details. Overall I enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one.

Lacking and disappointing

Up to this point I had thoroughly enjoyed the books leading up to book five, unfortunately I found this book lacking in substance, many characters left in the dust and barely mentioned I honestly felt like the book was filler and there was no point to most of the book. Training that wasn't training and a battle where everyone had their thumb up their butts. Instead of god's or even demi-gods you had amateur hour.

Not a lot actually happens for most of it: he goes to a place for training, people try to kill him, he goes to another place to train, more people try to kill him. Then he participates in a major battle having apparently learned a great deal from people trying to kill him.

It all felt kind of like filler and mostly just sets up things to happen later with not much to grab me in the current story.

Great addition to the series

Fast paced. Never a dull moment. Jer and Briff get a lot of the spotlight so you miss the larger group dynamic a tiny bit. However, it is as great read

Another battle,

The joining of God's, humans, dragons, all combining to defeat an ancient violent sadistic goddess, bent on destroying life in their universe, adds up to a great read, and you find out why at the end

Good Development

I really enjoyed watching the main character grow combat wise as well as emotionally. The only real downside is that I felt the book ended too soon.

Tantalizing

Chris's books are always good and the plots grip you like a TV show. He keeps putting out quality work and as an Indie writer earns and deserves a 5 star!
