Alex Diaz is a former middle school teacher who began to write full time when he realized he was telling his students to pursue their dreams but wasn’t ultimately following his. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, his love of writing sprung from the most unusual places - writing a story for another student in high school. With no rubric as a guide, Alex’s passion for writing blossomed. Alex graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a bachelor’s degree in English. When not writing, Alex enjoys family time, long walks - inspiration is everywhere, and eating chocolate. His favorite authors range from Joel Osteen to R.L. Stine to Atticus. He found his love of reading at his mother’s side. Since then, the right books have always found him at just the right time. He desires to one day be able to walk into a bookstore and sign physical copies of his books. Alex hopes readers leave his books with joy, words of wisdom, and the "awe" feeling.

In the Books and Love and Wine are his debut collections.

(NOTE: Since this book doesn’t SPECIFICALLY advertise itself as a poetry book, I’m going to be easier on it.)

For me, the book feels a little bit like a mix between a poetry book and an affirmations book. If I were to pick one category of the two, I would consider it an affirmations book—so I’m going to write my review from that mindset.

First, I love the concept and the setup of the ‘story’. I think it’s very neat and a unique idea. Also, I LOVE the use of the black pages with the white writing on it. It just looks so aesthetically pleasing! The same goes for the different font choices. I was initially unsure how I felt about that but they fit with the content of each page so I think it actually helped emphasize the aesthetic elements.

As far as the cover goes, I like the art style! The inclusion of the pictures I feel grounds the story into reality a tad, making the story feel a little more like a true story.

The reason I’m giving this 4 stars and not 5 (or 3) is because I think most of the ‘affirmations’, as I’m calling them, were a little too simple. Combined with the hazy line between whether this is supposed to be a poetry or affirmations book, and I just don’t see the pieces in this book as poetry. Admittedly, I am comparing it to Alex’s other book, “Love and Wine”, which I would definitely say is poetry.

Overall though, if you’re looking for a book with a general positive message that isn’t complicated and that you can revisit again and again, I would recommend giving this a shot!

3.5 stars!

This book isn't necessarily coined as a book of poetry like Alex's other book 'Love and Wine'. It is more so a book of affirmations/inspirational thoughts.

The book starts and ends focused on a man in the library; I loved the concept of this with the man's affirmations, writing in between. I also loved that the affirmations were on black pages with white font. It was definitely a different aesthetic than I'm used to reading. I think writers (and many readers) would definitely relate to the story that is laid out here!

As for the affirmations they relate to self worth, dreams, believing in yourself, positivity, respect, forgiveness, feelings, etc. I loved a lot of the affirmations; they would make for a cool calendar that you flip each day to be inspired for the day!

My favorites were:
-"People lie to protect those they love - keep that in mind the next time you hear 'Don't worry, I'm Fine.'"
-"Know your worth and don't ever go on sale"
