Jim (aka Kid Sensation) counts himself fortunate in that his friends have always been there for him, and he – in turn – tries to be there for them. That’s why it is with a great deal of enthusiasm that he looks forward to attending an event honoring his friend, the teen warlock Kane. However, his plans are immediately complicated by two factors.
First, an emissary from the nigh-omnipotent group of beings known as Incarnates unexpectedly appears on his doorstep. It is an arrival that, while not unwelcome, introduces a certain amount of unpredictability and chaos in his life.
In addition – and of much greater concern – his friendly visit with Kane is utterly derailed by a mysterious and deadly force that attacks randomly…and with murderous intent.
Focused on keeping the body count from rising, Jim quickly realizes that he is dealing with an adversary capable of destroying the entire world – and determined to do so. Even worse, it also becomes apparent to Jim that this enemy is beyond his ken, and even his vaunted super powers may not be enough to avert the global cataclysm that is coming.
Dear Kevin you’ve let me down I fell in love with kid sensation years ago that first book taking me on an adventure but the quality has not maintained book after book you drop almost as if you know we will but not putting much effort into it and this last on was the worst one of them all didn’t make much sense doesn’t really give us much new and nothing really happened it felt like an anime filler in book form Ik you’re not gonna read this but I hope that you think about the direction you want this series to go in because you could very well lose me and many others with this type of lazy work
The Kid Sensation series was one of the first indie super-hero series I tried and I was a fan for a while. But starting with Coronation, the shine started to wear off. Jim is overpowered and there doesn't appear to be an overarching plot driving the story.
In reading these last two books, I was struck by just how poorly the women in this series are written--they're either jealous or giggling. There doesn't seem to be space for the female characters to exercise a full range of emotion. They get described as "badasses" and then are rarely allowed to demonstrate this. (To be fair, one could say this about pretty much every super in the series. No one gets to show off except Jim and Mouse.) Jim is a total Mary Sue and the story demands any unattached women fall at his feet.
It might be me, but I think the language is getting more stilted. I will say that I'm delighted that Hardman didn't drop a single "by your leave" in Isolation or Conjuration. However, Jim uses "nigh-omnipotent" a lot. Do you know any 17 year olds (or anyone) using "nigh" on a regular basis? And... "nonce"? Hardman's thesaurus worked overtime throughout both books, and I'm not actually certain you can use some of the $10 words in the way they're deployed here.
But, aside from those things (which may have plagued the entire series), the story is just boring. Jim keeps going on these adventures, but they don't seem to be going anywhere in particular. Am I supposed to care about this Incarnation/dark cloud thing? Or the time travel thing? Or whether Jim's love parallelogram? I just don't. I'm aging, but Jim doesn't seem to be, and it might be time to part ways with this series.
I really enjoy this series. I always look forward to the next edition. The same will be said for the next book. I wonder what will happen. there are still lots of unanswered questions. I don't want to give anything away so I am going to end the comments here. Please note to really enjoy this story you have to start with book one.
I loved this book. I have found nobody writes an adventure quite like Kevin Hardman and this book didn't let me down. I was slightly disappointed in the fact that Kid Sensation was off planet again, so most of his friends (the characters we have come to know and love, such as his mentor Mouse, his best friend Smokey and even his on again off again girlfriend Electra) only had small parts to play in the non stop action. Although he wasn't entirely on his own and we were introduced to some new great characters, so the disappointment didn't last to long and I love the story. It was pretty obvious who was behind the creature but I still enjoyed Jim working it out and coming to the same conclusion as I did. And let's face it with a magical world and lots of action it didn't matter. I can't wait for the next book and think in the mean time I might just have to re visit my friends. Jim's friend Kane is about to be honoured with a ceremony and with so many people attending he is allowed to invite one special friend. Jim's arrival doesn't go down so well, when an unexpected guest hitches a ride and despite everybody's best efforts she is allowed to stay. Then the warlock who opposed her being allowed to stay the strongest, is found not only. dead but ripped apart. It seems someone else with power equal to the incarnate is also resent and this one has a deadly plan that involves destroying the world. Can Jim work out who or what is behind the attacks before somebody else dies or he and his friends are accused? Tension is high anyway, when everybody is in fear for there lives and the most powerful magic won't protect you but it's the perfect time to work out who your friends are. This is one of my favourite narrator's and even if I didn't love the Kid Sensation series I think I would get the book just to hear him reading it. So it is a double bonus having a great book and a great narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
It's always a good day when you get another Kid Sensation story but this one is a bit more bubbly than most and gives more insight into the magic practices of his friends. Although i enjoyed this one the usual mystery wasn't as convoluted as it has been in the past and feels like it was too short. Saying that i shall still follow Jims adventures as it is a nice escape.
So fun please tell me you're going to write more in this storyline
Brings him back to the joy of old comics and superheroes watching cartoons in the '80s and superheroes just a lot of fun enough drama and action to keep you engaged yet clean enough if my kid read it I'd be happy because it's just a good book only sad part was that this was the last one in the series and I'm really hoping there's more coming
The story wasn’t that for the price to pay but ok story compared to some in the series. My fav thing about the novel was expanded more on humanity’s magic do I didn’t like the MC love life has he is to soft or blind at romantic development that it’s just goofy in how it all just all works for him.
Another easy read from Kevin. No too many twists and turns. The Kid Sensation character is fun and very mature. I would have liked more about the characters friends Kane and Gossamer.
An old/new friend shows up just as Jim is heading off to attend a celebration for his Magic using friend Kane. As with most things around Jim, the mystery and mayhem are colossal. Excellent story!
Great story that can easily be finished in a weak. This book is better for fans of Kid Sensation already. May not be the best for new readers of this character.
I eagerly awaited this book for some time and it did not disappoint! Full of action and super powers. Another great addition to the Kid Sensation series.
The book was okay at best, I'm growing tired of the cliche love life full of 2d female characters. I already though Jim had all the possible advantages/cliches in a book possible between being rich, having tons of superpowers, being good looking, having multiple love interest, being a genius and literally being royalty. Then to top it all off he's the chosen one, with a mysterious black cloud surrounding him. But i will admit I was intrigued by the magic system the book used but was kind of dissapointed by the overall low level of most magicians. There's also that i thought we'd have finally given jim a consistent weakness in magic similar to most superman types, but only just reinforced his overpoweredness.
