Fate decided long ago that Iscer and Zyva belong together. Good thing Fate loves a challenge, because the cold mercenary and the woman who hates him may be her biggest challenge yet...
After she attacks her tentacled Aktovi owner, kills his wife, and escapes the city of Agroeos, Zyva Tanza knows her time on Xaensskar is coming to an end when she's quickly and violently captured. Treated and held in a hospital in the city of Brighmin, all she can do is wait for a fate that will, for her, be worse than death.
But Fate has something else in store for Zyva.
She's aided by a kind Drimuti female who tells her about a place called Corsov, and Zyva runs once again--only this time, she has a place to run to.
But the cruel man who'd enslaved her is not about to give her up, and he knows one sure way to get her back.
He hires XCRU.
♥♥♥
Iscer is a mercenary of the group XCRU, and when he's hired to do a job, he does the job--no matter what. He doesn't let his feelings interfere. Ever. Some might say he has no feelings. And he might agree with that.
When he goes after a fugitive who escaped the law--twice--he doesn't care that she's female, or that she's a slave, or that the man she tried to kill believed it was his right to hurt her. That's not his concern. He enjoys the chase, true enough, but in the end, completing the job he accepted is all that matters.
She leads him on a wild chase, gaining his respect--and maybe a little something more--along the way. Still, he'll capture her, return her to her master, and never think of her again.
Sure he will. -- If you like steamy fated mate alien romance between strong, sassy women and fiercely protective alien males, you'll love Jude Gray's Alien Mate, book 3 in the Fated Mates of Xaensskar alien romance series!
It's easy to take these books for what they are. There's no real depth or anything special too them but they serve a purpose of being a quick and predictable low angst read for an evening in.
Written for mature readers only (18+ years old) due to subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy intimate scenes and violence.
This could be read as a stand-alone story, but I recommend it be read in series order for maximum reader satisfaction since additional information about the planet / environment.
Zyva and Iscar are Fated Mates that only meet because of a contract that has been placed on her return to her Master. Zyva volunteered to enter into a 2-year contract of slavery because of debts left when her father died, otherwise her mother would have been held liable and taken to prison.
Unfortunately for her, the Master of the house became obsessed with her and his wife was jealous. Thus began years of torture, far beyond what she was supposed to serve, as the Master found reasons to keep adding time to her contract. Zyva realized early on that she would never be freed.
Then one day, the horror was too much, and she defended herself. It resulted in the wife dying, the Master being injured, and her escaping. Zyva’s contract is given to a hunter, Iscar, that always completes his assignments. She manages to escape from him, and captures his interest, but will it matter in the end?
I read all 3 in the series. All of them were short, Insta love, but sweet in their own way. The aliens are alien but more human. There's no alien ships, no abduction from Earth, and no space. All of them are set on a distant planet with various aliens living together, not always happily.
I only gave the series 4 stars because the author really needed to give more backstory and world building. We have no idea how so many diverse species came to live on this world, or why, and there's almost no world building. Also the stories (though better written than most) are way too short and lack action and world building. I think the author is talented and short changed herself and her readers when these could have been so much more. I hope later books are more fleshed out with more description and more time for the characters to get to know one another.
Pretty action packed for such a short story, about 100 pages give or take. Zyva has been handed a pretty shitty hand in life, selling herself into slavery for 2 years to protect her ungrateful (i think...although that was pretty glossed over towards the end) mother. Iscar is the badass unfeeling alien bounty hunter lead that is tasked with tracking her down and bringing her back to her abusive slave owner. I enjoyed zyva's bravery and the fact that she never gave up and could still enjoy life with everything she endured. At first you want to hate iscar because he's such an unfeeling brute but he changes his tune pretty quickly and even starts to respect her. My only complaint is I wanted more...more background info on everyone and the races and towns.
Zavala and Iscer are wonderful characters. So happy someone is writing not just about humans or those of mixed blood. Would have loved to know more of their ethnic, cultural backgrounds though. Found her superstitious nature interesting. So many are and it offers glimpse for those mindsets (like me ) that do not believe in them. Would love for author to revisit the children, once grown. Or maybe of street kids
what awesome characters. I love when a woman can bring a man to his knees. What a great story . It was action packed and felt like it flowed well. I love the universe Ms. Gray has put together. Keep writing and I'll read all your stuff!
So far I've really enjoyed the three books in this series. I am curious about the different species on Xaensskar and would love to get more details on their customs. Why are Pokies so disliked?
Zyva was one of the slaves in the household but the husband was enamoured with her and his wife in her jealous rages injured Zyva. Zyva was being abused again and there was stabbing of the wife and husband.
