Good rule of thumb: Don't pick a fight with Bree O'Rylee. She might be over forty and run with a limp, but that doesn't mean she won't track you down and drive the tip of her boot right up your . . .
Bree was hoping for a few days off from dealing with monsters, bad guys, or general weirdness that doesn’t fit into a human box of what is supposed to be real.
What she got was a stay in the hospital with an undead roommate and a whole new set of problems that keep rising from the grave.
But her love life is at least on track. Until it’s not. And when it goes sideways, it jumps straight into the drink and sinks to the bottom.
Now, Bree has to put her heart on the back burner as she is offered a major job hunting down the very person causing all the undead to rise. And she has two days to do it before the whole town turns into a scene from the Walking Dead.
Time to pull up your big girl panties and swig a little whiskey. Things are about to get interesting.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
I can't believe this ending... this actual storyline... SUPERB but at the same time I'm hanging!!! I love Breena but I have no idea how she will answer that question - - I NEED the next book right now!!!
I was never 100% in to this series. It’s good for a few laughs and then the story is all over the place with our heroine running back and forth, jumping from one danger to the next without stopping and accessing just how much she can take on. This choice of a cliffhanger seemed incredibly silly to entertain. Especially when we know she’s not gonna bother accepting the deal because… duck Karissa. My bigger gripe is that this is the FIFTH book in this series and I feel like we still don’t know much of anything about Bree. Yes we learned officially that she can do many of the things she does because she’s connected to death, but I mean seriously… aren’t we going to learn anything more about the shadow world or more about her family tree?!? At this point we should know more and Bree is at a certain age where she loves herself more than any man could… loneliness is one thing but what happened to being just okay with just her?
If you hate cliffhangers, do yourself a favor and don’t pick up this series. Seriously, EVERY. SINGLE. BOOK. I myself, am a glutton for punishment, so off I go with a smile on my face. Book three, Midlife Ghost Hunter, ended once again abruptly. Bree and Crash were in the forge and things were just heating up and…WHAMMO. End of book. Thankfully, Shannon took pity on us and started Midlife Zombie Hunter at the exact moment that we left off with Bree and Crash getting busy. BUT Bree’s suddenly writhing on the floor and not in a good way. Hello, hospital, and hello morphine! Of course, because chaos follows Bree everywhere she goes, the hospital is about to be spelled on lockdown thanks to a zombie outbreak. She’s then offered a buttload of money to figure out who is raising the dead. That will get her everything she’s wanted since the start, right?
If you’re expecting that you are finally going to get answers in book five, oh my sweet summer child, no. We are strung along for another ride. Crash is attempting to be heroic by protecting Bree from the shadow world, but what he doesn’t realize is that she can protect her damn self…mostly. His knight in tarnished armor act is getting old. Is he? Isn’t he? Does he? Doesn’t he? Ugh. He thinks she can’t possibly want to be with a man tied to the darkness but can he open his friggin eyes already? She’s in it deep as well. Robert is looking better and better every minute. Except Crash’s fae queen ex-wife has absconded with him. Her friends are acting strangely and loyalties are called into question. It’d be really easy for Bree to sink into despair about right now but in typical fashion, she pulls herself up and keeps fighting.
"For just a moment I didn’t see myself. Not my forty-three-year-old face or body. Not the wrinkles I was earning every damn day or the increasing laxity of my skin. Not the failure I so often saw. Certainly not the girl who wondered if she’d ever get it right. No, I saw someone else. I saw a damn boss bitch ready to take on the day. I saw a woman who had earned her scars. I saw a woman who faced each day with all the energy she had left. I saw a woman who loved with all her heart, even when it hurt her. I saw a woman I liked very much; a woman I’d like to see more of."
This ending is absolutely heartbreaking. Sometimes you have to lose everything to find yourself. Bree’s offered an impossible choice by an unlikely ally, but there’s always a trick with the fae. Now that she finally knows a bit more about her bloodline and the powers that she has, she might have someone who can help her learn to use them. And if that means that Crash doesn’t have the same zing for her anymore? Well, it might be the best way to protect her heart.
I don’t know what is going to be pulled out for book six, but we have to wait until January to find out. *whines*
Yes, while I do love this book series I'm a bit DISAPPOINTED with it! 1st: this damn slow burn between Breena and Crash is hitting on my last nerve. 2nd: I'm a little pissed about the inconsistency between this book and the previous 4 others, for example Breena was 41 years old in the previous books but now she's 43?, and the little girl that was kidnapped that lived across the street from Gran's house name was Charlotte and now her name is Ann? Like seriously WTH?. 3rd: I had gotten the impression that Breena, would turn out to be some kinda badass heroine that was going to come into all this power.... (Eye roll) she's just mediocre!!! I'm tired of Breena running around like a chicken with her head cut off, and then she got the nerve to be stubborn and don't like to listen and don't know shit.. Geesh!
I was hoping by this book Breena, would be doing amazing things and kicking more ass by now... Again, I'm a bit disappointed because she's just barely getting by. However I will continue on reading this series since I have invested so much time into this storyline.. I just hope form here it gets better and not a total waste of my damn time.. (Eye roll)
Honestly I’m a little disappointed. This series started out so promising, but is now just plodding along with filler books. Nothing really happens. Questions don’t really get answered. I feel like Breena hasn’t grown or evolved much since book one. It’s just meh. Give the lady some answers already. We’re on book 5 and she’s still just winging it.
Well, this was a surprise disappointment to me. I've enjoyed the last few books, but unfortunately, that likeability is not consistent with each book. How many times are we going to have Crash and Bree just at that point.....then....NOPE, sorry, not gonna happen...??? To me, it was one time too many. Sometimes I think it might be my mindset when I happen to read a book because this book just completely went a different way in my mind from the previous book. I'm not even sure how that can happen.
We are now at the 5th book in the series, but honestly...where is the progression? Yes, Bree now has a pretty solid group of friends that she can count on...but, does she? In this book we have a shifting of loyalties but to me, everything just felt...FORCED. It bothered the heck out of me and completely pulled me out of the story.
Honestly...5 books in and Bree STILL doesn't know what she is, or what her magic can do? Even while having access to her dead grandmother? She is still running off half cocked and stumbling around without stopping to think. It was entertaining at the beginning. Now it is just annoying.
Will I continue this series? I'm not actually sure. I've had moments of pure enjoyment and then for some reason, this book really hit me the wrong way. Since this book was such a chore to finish, we will just have to see.....
How? How do you, Shannon Mayer, take a series that's four books in, and make everything I think I know completely wrong? Like wrong, wrong! Seriously, it starts on a high and sexy (if you read through the warnings) note, and then Every. Single. Thing you thought was going on was turned on its head. A complete 180.
Breena was as fierce and extraordinary as I've come to love from her. She cares, for everyone that deserves it. If you don't, go duck yourself! She defintely finds out some important answers, but, inevitably, they lead to loads more questions.
Her crew is amazing, and new ones are added. Ones you thought you could trust are questioned. I don't know what to do with this, honestly, because I was floored as new facts came to light and loyalties shifted.
This was a heartbreaking, action-packed, exhilarating ride. I laughed a lot. I cried. I raged. I held my breathe. I tried to piece the puzzle together to no avail. When Shannon laid it all out there? I was mind-blown, but also hopeful.
This series has packed a far greater punch than I ever imagined it would. Shannon is a master at her craft, and I implicitly trust her on this journey, but it's one hell of a ride. I have faith for the future, but this one made me sweat! 5 stars 100%.
I was excited when the new book came out but now I'm feeling pretty blah about the whole series. I read the first couple of chapters, realized it was going to be a replay of the same hot/cold from the previous four books, and then read the last chapter only for it to end in a cliffhanger. Reading the summary for the next book, it seems like that one will just be a re-hash of the exact same hot/cold. I probably won't waste anymore time reading each book - I'll just wait until the series is finished and read the last one.
2.5 / 5 This felt oddly rushed and had a few odd discrepancies. Two side characters randomly had different names without explanation (i.e. Evangeline is now Eleanor, Charlotte is now Anne), main character went from being 41 in the first few books to 43 despite only like…a few weeks/months passing, etc. Plot points were just too random at times, especially the beginning. And I know I’m supposed to be invested in this angsty romance with the Chosen One and the bad boy, but I just find it melodramatic and tiring. I’m interested to see where the story is going and I love the ragtag group of friends (also Robert 🥺), I love the world-building and the magic, but I feel this book is leaning too heavily on the star-crossed lovers drama.

OMG this series is so ducking good and this latest addition is just amazing! Bree is back and she is as bad ass as ever! It’s action packed and we are off to one hell of a start. Old friends are back, new characters introduced, there’s zombies, magic, betrayal, romance and the humour, well it’s so so funny in places. Throw in some twists and turns just to confuse the hell out of you and you had better be sitting down! I love this series and cannot recommend it enough!
The fifth installment of the Forty Proof series does not disappoint!! This book is delectable delicious. Sexy times, belly laughter, action, deception, loyalty, and friendship all wrapped up in a awesome book. I was hooked from the very beginning of the story and it was very difficult to put the book down. Breena spunkiness certainly comes out to play in this installment and I loved every second of it it!! This book wasn’t a easy journey for Breena, but I truly feel like she is trusting her own instincts and talents going forward. Oh, and I love her sidekick Kinkly too. I literally read this book less than 24 hours, it was that good!! If you enjoy a binge worthy paranormal women’s fiction with a bit of romance and amazing characters then consider picking this series up. It doesn’t disappoint. It is a very good magical series! —— Audiobook review:
Lauren Fortgang and Shannon Mayer are such a phenomenal duo. The narrator elevates the story that the author wrote and just breathes life into it and her voice is fantastic. Great match for Breena. I think this book is my favorite one yet. I laughed so much. A lot of great moments. I didn’t realize how much I missed Breena, Robert, Crash, Feish, and the rest of the gang till I started the story. I highly recommend this series in audio. It is absolutely fantastic.
Shannon even made zombies cool...love this series!
Usually Zombies aren't my jam, but they totally work in Bree's world of craziness. I tried to read slower to make it last longer, but failed. Kept me guessing and laughing the whole time...I just love these characters! Bring on book 6!
I'm DNF'ing this book and I'm done with the series. I got 21% in and gave up. This came across as childish and for a book about an older lady it shouldn't. The author had to tell everyone to NOT read a chapter and skip to chapter 2 because she was going to write a sex scene? Seriously? Is the audience under 18 for a MIDLIFE book? And I completely forgot the author can't say f'ing and everything is sanitized. Then Bree's boo (the fae king) leaves her in the hospital because he thinks she was with another guy? Self-esteem issues much? Not to mention it's book #5 and Bree's still wandering around clueless with nobody really knowing what her power is. Tap out!
This series just keeps getting better. I’m definitely off of Crash now, and while I ship Robert so very much I’m thinking a nice business suit clad man would be a nice romp for Bree! I love Feish, Susie, and Kinkly, I love the bond the 4 of them have formed and what they have gone through. Each book deepens the bond and this me was no different, a true sisterhood if I’ve ever read one. Alan needs to get lost, he needs to be dealt such a hard blow he won’t risk opening his mouth ever again to attempt to put a woman down, any woman. I do wish there were more repercussions to things that come up in the book, like a supernatural bite, but maybe there will be and we just don’t know it yet, otherwise it seems kind of a moot point to bring up.
Eh, getting a little tired of the Crash situation. I’m liking how the lines blur between the Hollows, Council and the misfits. New characters, bad guys and betrayals. Curious about what path Bree will go down. Felt sorry. The table was interesting.

I hate to repeat myself but this series just gets better with each release. Midlife Zombie Hunter was spectacular. My respect for the world building and character development deepens with every installment. I’m not even mad about the cliffhanger at the end because it was brilliant. Now, do I read the next ebook right away or wait for the audio to release? Decisions, decisions.
Who would have thought this whole story was just a ruse to get what was buried in Bree back yard. That’s instense. We see a lot of old characters, and some cool new ones. And the choice Bree has to face, at the end of the book, is HUGE. Who can possibly make that choice. The next book is going to be Epic.
Shannon Mayer's "Midlife Zombie Hunter" (Forty Proof #5) is a wonderfully original and quirky look at our heroine who is over 40 and starting over. I pissed myself laughing out loud all the way through. Shannon is a loose cannon when she writes and trust me you would not want her any other way. Shannon and the other Fab 13 are taking the world by storm by showing that being over 40 does not mean the end of life but something to be celebrated, pee pads and all. This brilliant story takes us on a journey where Breena finds herself in the most unlikely of situations and it is hard not to feel like you are on the run with her every step of the way. With laughter and magic, ex husbands and demons, leprechauns, werewolves, skeletons and more and you have everything you could ever want in a story, now you just need a bottle of wine and a quiet place to lose yourself in Shannon's fantastic writing. Bring on the next book.
Entertaining as per usual, but just not enough. I have enjoyed each of these books individually, but this one feels like pieces of chapters of a larger book. It needed more than the chicken-with-its-head-cut-off story that this turned out to be. At this point, we should know way more about her history, we should have more answers to questions posed throughout the series, and the same old same old is getting old. We need evolution. I hope the next book is better. I loved the last four.
Not sure if I will continue with this series as there is absolutely no progression with the Bree. It a continuous rehash as she bumbles around causing more damage than good.
Midlife Zombie Hunter is the 5th book in Shannon Mayer’s Forty Proof series, and this addition to the series does not disappoint. Broke my heart? Yes. Had me choking on laughs? Yes. Had me wanting Bree to actually catch a break? Absolutely. But this book did not disappoint on keeping me page-turning to the end, and begging for more with that cliffhanger ending. Midlife Zombie Hunter hits you in the face with the spicy, but don’t get too excited...it’s all heat with no flame. Plus, a bit of an emergency puts the love-fest on pause, but something else comes along to put it on ice. Something big has come to town and it makes itself known in the worst way. Zombies. Who needs the headache right? Well, Bree and her friends are about to have a whole handful of them as zombies are breaking out all over the city. What is going on?! Midlife Zombie Hunter is really going to have you all in your feelings so brace yourself. I couldn’t help but thinking “I’ve been hit with a one-two punch, but I can handle it. Just don’t hit me with another.” Well, the author must have known someone would think that so brace yourself for that third punch when you think those very lines. LOL! My heart breaks for Bree with this book. But I love that she’s learning. She’s getting stronger, but she’s also learning about herself. Brace yourself for the ending. It’s a whole lot of...what?! I’m more than a little eager to read the next book in this series to find out what happens next. I just hope Bree makes the right decision. I enjoyed this book so much from the laughs, the chaos, and even the gut-punching heartbreak. This is one series I couldn’t put down once I pick it up. I’m rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you have enjoyed this series to this point...grab this book, grab some tissues, and dive in. This book will give you all the feels and so much more.
Cliffhangers abound in this series, but there’s something fun in knowing that things are going to stay interesting. I don’t need a neat little bow on the top of every story I read. How cool are the covers for this series?! I wish more paranormal books had unique cover art. They coordinate and manage to stand out simultaneously. Breena, the main character, is an unconventional heroine. She’s a ibuprofen popping, whiskey loving, divorcée with paranormal bloodlines; who is still learning about her abilities. It’s refreshing to see such growth in an older character. I can’t help, but root for her in all the situations she finds herself in. There’s a lot of humor throughout the series. If you take yourself and your reading selections super seriously then just pass, but if you enjoy snickering or outright cracking up laughing during a book, give these a try.
I tore through the whole series one book after another from cover to cover and wanted more.
All classy 5 star reads ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
And each book better than the other.
🔥The Forty Proof Series is A Paranormal Women's Fiction with a bit of class, and a lot of sass for anyone who feels like age is just a number!
🔥Full of snark, sass and class, this tale of a middle-aged woman who'd given up trying to please everyone and run out of ducks to care for, is one that gripped me from the very first page and had me set it on my shelf of all-time favourites.
What should you expect if you decide to give it a try?
🔥A tale of mystery full of plot twists you'll probably never see coming. 🔥Lots of danger and action 🔥Cool magic, creepy shadow world stuff and a whole load of classy snark 🔥A forty something woman with a broken filter who's done caring what everyone else thought, 🔥an animated skeleton and an undead horse, who happen to be among my favourites, 🔥A more or less stupid werewolf who got his tail in a twist, 🔥A love sick siren 🔥And giant spider reading and editing books, among others.
How that last bit works you're gonna have to read this to find out. 😉😎
My advice if you'll have it:
🔥Give these ducking books a try. And you can thank me later.🤩
Every time I open this series I’m granted access to a wonderland of delights. The author is articulate and doesn’t belabor points too much. She has a marvelous style for writing action with very few moments of calm serenity. The characters are all crafted meticulously within her bend of mythology that makes me eager to continue reading. The best part of this heroine is that she’s older than most. She’s plagued with self doubt, pushes her physical to extremes that might kill a real human at her age and she’s gloriously old enough to speak her mind. *Spoilers* losing Bone Robert, Corb, Crash & Alan only reinforces the friends she has around her. I’m not one for cliffhanger endings but for this serious I ‘m in.
This was another great book from Shannon! I really enjoy this series. I completely relate with Bree and love all her friends. Bree deals with monsters and so much more in this book. She learns more about her friends and who her enemies are in this book. The ending was not what I wanted to hear but I am excited to read the next book and see what happens next. I listened to the audiobook and Lauren Fortgang is awesome! She bring the book to life. I think this books would be something TV or the movies need to grab while they can. I think these series would be great for TV or the movies and if done well a great giggle along the way!
