More often than not children relate themselves with the characters of a good story. In such circumstances, reading fiction can help them to get inspiration from the characters. These stories often portray real life implications through anecdotes, and as such makes it easier for them to understand the complex aspects of life. Moreover, reading these stories at regular intervals can actually help them to develop a positive outlook towards life, which eventually proves beneficial for good character development.

We Can Do Anything: Stories For Brave Little Kids by bestselling children's author Daniel Gershkovitz is a delightful and charming collection of books for the younger reader. The author writes in a wonderfully entertaining and imaginative style that will guarantee the attention of young minds. If you ever wanted to bond even more with your children or grandchildren, this would be a very enjoyable collection to share with them. I read these books with my grandkids and they loved it.

It seems to me that this book was created with a lot of love and joy and it’s clear that the author really enjoys creating such wonderful stories. This collection ‘illustrates the values of true friendship, the acceptance of others, the harm caused by prejudice, the virtue of admitting one’s mistakes, and the unconditional love of caring parents.’

Thank you for sharing with us the gift that you have obviously worked so hard to refine. We’ll be looking forward to seeing what’s coming next. A well-deserved five stars from us! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book collection.

‘We are all unique, we are one of a kind’

Israeli author Daniel Gershkovitz earned his BA in psychology and criminology as well as a degree in Special Education. He served as a lieutenant in the Israeli Air Force and now works as a representative for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, serving in the Ukraine. He is both a writer of children’s books and a humanitarian, working to provide youth at risk with a second chance in life.

This boxed set – WE CAN DO ANYTHING - is the second series Daniel has published, the first being WE CAN DO IT! From the titles of each collection it is obvious that the stories are meant to reinforce self-confidence and self-esteem while adding other important lessons for children to incorporate. The stories are superbly illustrated by Victoria Turzhanskq.

The five stories in this set each place the lessons for children’s learning (and entertainment!) in the form of animals – The Shy Chameleon, The Arrogant Toad, The Friendly Scorpion, The Forgiving Beaver, and The Curious Chick. Using a lilting rhyming pattern the stories come to life – in rhyme, in meaning, and in excellent visuals – as a short portion of a passage in The Shy Chameleon suggests: ‘Slowly and with caution, the chameleon popped out, standing by the tomatoes, gazing about. The mare at once said: “Did you swallow red ink? You changed your colors in a flash and a blink. But unlike you, my dear, I can’t figure out; What is it exactly you’re whining about? Your skin adapts to colors! How great! That’s so cool! A spectacular trait!” That sense of lyricism makes each of the stories flow while offering some wise suggestion and ideas to children.

The values transmitted by Daniel’s fine stories cover self-esteem, friendship, humility, forgiveness, appreciation and love of family, and the negative impact of prejudice. Each story is well developed with excellent animal characters who not only deliver the intended message but also provide a fanciful and fascinating little adventure. An additional value is the inclusion of games and puzzles. This is an exceptionally fine set of children’s books! Very highly recommended.

This vibrant, colorful, and well-illustrated package was quirky and fun to read. Your kids would enjoy this surprising haul of treasures. These tales do more than just teach kids how to conquer their shyness and fears, they are fun and really amusing, and most of all, they help by teaching them how to build their self-confidence. These lovely books, with their quirky characters, would keep young readers entertained and amused.

Life Lessons

These stories reminded me of a few of the fables I’d heated growing up. Each story had one overarching moral message or life lesson. In many cases the story was about overcoming our beliefs, or an unexpected act or heroism.

Multiple pages of activities follow each story. Readers are asked to find the differences in images, count, decide what colors add up to, and more.

I was particularly fond of the illustrations, which are adorable!

Engaging

Very engaging for young child. The illustrations perfectly match and the moral is not over the head of a pre-k child

Come here for five stories set in a very moral universe, where highly moralistic tales come complete with a large spread of puzzles, ideal for the young book user to be shown through or to solve on their own. Collectively they have a consistent look – the visuals are very cartoonish, and seem stuck with a fixed perspective, with the angled top-down view of the cheapest of video games. The tale of the beaver impressed more with good wintery weather effects.

So to the tales. We get a chameleon who wants to be a stand-out member of the community, but has what she thinks an annoying habit of disappearing and fading into the background; a conceited toad, thinking himself too good for the games his friends want to play, and above being worried when they give him alarming news; a young scorpion who struggles when the entire oasis population wants to scarper when all it wants is friendship; and a beaver who's so bold he can still help save the day, even when faced with a vicious snub. Only the final piece felt a let-down – a cussed young chick should get some comeuppance for being so brash and hot-headed, but no, he gets a lesson in undying parental love instead.

Looking back, the first mentioned was the best, but I definitely would have time for the middle three. The telling is always in AABB rhymes, and the spreads can look quite wordy with large print and up to ten lines a page, but there is always room for the visuals to come through strongly. Rhyme and rhythm do lapse here and there, but the reading aloud of these pieces is generally a strong pleasure, and these will be worth bonding over with a young 'un. Especially if the price for the set shown on netgalley at time of writing this is correct – this is a great value package for those unable to access a lending library.

I read these to my son as bedtime stories. He liked the rhymes and enjoyed looking at the pictures, although I struggled to keep him engaged for the entire story in one sitting (he’s 5). Perhaps these stories are better aimed at slightly older children for concentration purposes.

The games at the end kept him engaged and interested, particularly the spot the difference games.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a must-have collection for children and those who love them. The author writes rhyming stories with beautiful pictures. The stories teach important life lessons in a fun way. The author adds a bonus at the end of each tale using fun games to teach children things like counting, their colors, and much more.
