Three isn’t always a magic number . . .

There are three reasons Tess Fenton should be happy. One, her job at the Blue Olive deli is dull, but at least she gets to work with her best friend. Two, she lives in a cozy cottage in the pretty village of Halston. Three, she’s in love with her boyfriend, Blake.

Isn’t she?

Because, despite their history, Blake continues to be the puzzle piece in Tess’s life that doesn’t quite fit. And when she meets intriguing local artist Daniel Cavanagh, it soon becomes apparent that, for Tess, love isn’t as easy as one, two, three . . .

You've Got My Number by Angela Barton is a 2020 Choc Lit publication.

A well-balanced story of life, love, and new beginnings!

Tess is feeling restless and unfulfilled. Her job is unsatisfying, and her relationship with her boyfriend, Blake, is in a deep rut. Just as Tess is gathering her strength to make some necessary changes in her life, she suddenly finds herself trapped, feeling forced to remain in a situation she desperately wants out of.

Then Tess meets Daniel and an undeniable chemistry develops between them, but Tess can’t act on her feelings, which only compounds her frustrations.

Meanwhile, Daniel is still beating himself up over something that took place in his past, while also dealing with a very stressful situation involving his sister. He and Tess both try to keep their feelings for each other on the unrequited side, each coping with personal problems they can't see a way out of.

Will Daniel and Tess remain as two ships that pass in the night or will fate intervene on their behalf?

Barton did a fantastic job with creating these characters. Tess and Daniel, of course, are a couple that is meant to be, but there are forces working to keep them apart. The bad guy in this drama is well drawn, and the Daniel’s backstory is compelling.

There are other threads in the book that are not exactly cheerful but are a part of life and added a touch of brevity to the story. I really loved the way the story came together in the end. I love a book that can balance real life problems, develop a sweet love story, and then add the right amount of feel good emotions and humor, leaving me feeling very satisfied with my reading experience.

Favorite Quotes:

… her mind awash with thoughts of how to finish with Blake. Perhaps she should explain in the Star Trek terminology he was familiar with. ‘I need space, this is the final frontier.’

Tess remembered she’d been mumbling expletives in panic. ‘Nothing that a pint can’t put right,’ she replied, trying to sound unfazed. ‘I’m waiting for a girlfriend. She’s late.’ Great! Now she sounded like a possessive alcoholic lesbian who suffered from a mild dose of Tourette’s. This wasn’t going well.

‘I suppose you could try internet dating.’ Tess couldn’t believe how her mouth was taking control of this conversation instead of her brain. What was she doing trying to enrol him at a dating agency? ‘Too scary. I’ve had friends who have dabbled in it. Apparently the odds are good, but the goods are odd!’

Recently he’d been pestering her to move in with him, but she’d no intention of leaving Halston. She couldn’t imagine sharing a house with his numerous diecast models and action figures of Captain Kirk and an army of Klingons. Models of the Starship Enterprise decorated any flat surface and it didn’t help that a poster of Mr Spock looked down on her whenever she sat on Blake’s toilet.

When it came to men, her friend’s attention span was as temporary as a bruise.

My Review:

I checked it three times to be sure, and this is the second time I have smirked my way through one of Angela Barton’s cleverly amusing missives, I adore her unique style of witty levity and wry humor. Her endearing characters were realistically drawn, imperfect, and quite entertaining to delve into, as were her pleasantly engaging and well-crafted storylines. I am eager to see what she conjures next and wonder if she can best her creation of a confused elder’s prideful explanation of her son’s gift of a “dignified camera,” (digital). ~ Snort! Not like I've ever made such a gaff - oh no, not me!

This was the cutest of all my books read this month. I loved, loved, loved the book. The writing made me feel warm and gushy, it was smooth and delish like hot chocolate.

Tess was in a relationship with Blake which wasn't working anymore. Daniel bumped into her life when she looked her worst with fish scales on her. And that began an interesting journey between the two. But Blake dropped a health bomb, and Tess had to postpone the breakup. She was in a dilemma. She liked Daniel and was intensely attracted, borderline in love with Daniel, but Blake was going through therapy, she had to be a friendly support.

My first book by author Angela Burton and I loved going on this journey with her. Her writing was superfluous and gave me all kinds of feels. The author sure did know how to put in bucket loads of emotions. Tess was brilliant in the role she was cast. She was everything I wanted, loyal and kind and so generous. Daniel played the sensitive love interest.

Blake was a louse who feigned illness, and I loved to hate him. Understanding his desperate attempt to force love, I felt pity too in tiny amounts. The story rushed by, I didn't even know how the time flew and I had reached the last few chapters that I really savored. I was transported into Tess's world.

I really need more of Ms. Barton's books. She made me feel happy and gave me two hours of bliss where the tensions of life could be forgotten. Just magical!!

There are times when a story comes along with just enough slices of real life, glimpses into the hidden view of a monster within that will anger, entertain, delight, and frustrate me – probably in equal parts. You’ve Got My Number is such a book. I absolutely loved the story, felt for the characters, and loathed one selfish man who put his own wants above the happiness of someone he was supposed to love. So, yeah, that’s a slice of real-life for many people, isn’t it?

It’s not easy coming to the conclusion that you might not actually be in love with someone anymore for whatever reason. Tess is approaching this decision when her boyfriend, Blake, drops an emotional bombshell on her and she stays – but not for the right reasons, and certainly not for the right man. Add to the mix an attractive man who fits so perfectly in Tess’s life if she were only truly free to pursue more than a friendship with Daniel, yet she feels obligated to remain where she is. To say that I found Blake’s actions despicable is an understatement, yet there are so many people just like him out in the world that it’s rather frightening.

You’ve Got My Number drew me in from the start and didn’t let go until the final page. The story flows smoothly, the characters (main and secondary) felt real and believable, and the conflict kept me on the edge throughout hoping that Tess would make the right decision for herself and Daniel – and that Blake would get what he so richly deserved.

I was caught up and invested in this story and feel that you would be as well. I’d not hesitate to recommend their story to any romance reader who loves a good love story, a villain to loathe, and a couple to root for as they work their way to a happy future.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Choc Lit/ Ruby Fiction. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

I loved this book!! This is perfect for curling up with through those cold blustery nights, I am relatively new to Angela Burton, having only recently discovered her work, but from that first book last year, I was completely hooked with her writing. So when I got the opportunity to review Angela’s latest offering, I snapped it up and I am so pleased that I did as this is wonderfully warm and feel-good romance, that will leave you wearing a huge smile.
Really, don’t we all love books that can make you laugh and smile? I, know that I do and this is one of those.
If ever there was a couple that was meant to be together! Tess and Daniel are just perfect for each other, yet due to other factors in their lives, they can’t just jump into a new relationship. Tess is in a relationship with the awful Blake- honestly, this guy could curdle milk, sorry but I really didn’t like him from getting yet his presence and manipulative behaviour is integral to how the story unfolds, so I suppose I can allow him that. Tess knows that their relationship has come to a halt, she isn’t in love with him and as she likes o say, they are like jigsaw pieces that have been re-moulded to fit even though they don’t. I do love that analogy!
When she literally bumps into charming, handsome and a little guarded; Daniel with his two gorgeous little spaniels, she just knows that this guy is special, she can’t deny that there is a mutual attraction there, sparks fly. But Daniel has his own darkness he must first face before he can commit to his own happily ever after.
But Blake – who is a cretin – sees the changes in the wind, he doesn’t want to lose her, even though he knows deep down that they have gone the course, he comes up with a plan to keep her by his side, and it is here and his dastardly plan that really boiled my blood, Tess is a good person, so she does the decent thing and stands by him.
I love this! It is such an easy to read, cute and magical story all about new beginnings, falling in love and second chances, both Tess and Daniel must navigate their way through the rocky waters they have each found themselves in, I felt that both of them needed a second chance in life; Tess with just getting herself out there and start to live again while trying to find her ‘jigsaw piece’ because the ‘piece’ she has now doesn’t fit in her jigsaw and Daniel needs a second chance after running away from an incident which happened many years ago and one which he still feels guilt over. I have to say that I do love a ‘new beginnings’/second chance story, I don’t read this trope half as much as I should do and judge by this beauty I think I am missing out on something.
I have to mention the cover, which is so eye-catching and matches the story within so perfectly. I know you should never judge a book by its cover, and you most certainly never pick up a book just because of the pretty picture, but I have to admit that in this case, I saw Angela’s name emblazed across it, add in a handsome dark-haired chap plus two dogs and well you have me hook-line and sinker…I really am that easy to please and Choc Lit really do have some of the most eye-catching and fitting covers for their books.
Overall this is a gorgeous, feel-good, warm, charming and relatable story which a cast of fabulous character who you will love and hate in equal measure – really, there was one which I totally hated, one of those characters where you want to boo and hiss them whenever they are in a scene – which shows just how great Angela’s writing is, to create such wonderful characters that make you feel such a wealth of emotion.

Considering that the story includes one of the things I least want to read about, the fact that it still managed to give me an overall good impression is a testament to the author's ability to create characters whose interactions are greatly enjoyable to follow. As Tess is stuck in a relationship she doesn't feel she can end yet even if she really wants to, she and Daniel remain just friends for a while in spite of obvious mutual attraction, and I liked their friendly conversations so much I almost feared they would become less interesting as a couple. I also liked Daniel's sister and only wish I could have enjoyed all her scenes instead of being horrified by what she had to face (that's my above-mentioned "thing I least want to read about" problem). And of course the two dogs are adorable. As for Blake... well, he's not meant to be likeable and, even if getting his point of view from time to time allows us to understand why he took the bad decisions that make him unforgivable, there's no danger of ending up thinking that Tess should have stayed with him.

This book was one of my reads for Choc Lit & Ruby Fiction's Tasting Panel (a group of ordinary, volunteer readers that helps the publisher select the best stories). Then I was offered an advance copy so I could read the final version and write a review without waiting for publication day.

This is a heartwarming contemporary romance mainly set not too far away from where I live! Tess Fenton is feeling dissatisfied with her life. Yes, she has a job, a boyfriend and lives in a lovely cottage in a pretty village. However, the only good thing about her job is her best friend works there with her and she has really had enough of her boyfriend, Blake. She's planning on breaking up with him but he knows and chooses to lie to gain her sympathy and stop her going through with the break up. What makes this worse for Tess is that she's intrigued by a local artist, Daniel Cavanagh, but she's loyal and will resist their attraction until she's broken up with Blake . . .

I really didn't like Blake - mind you, nor did any of his friends when they knew what he'd done! As for his Mum, well, the least said about her probably the better as, despite her name, she didn't bring any joy to Tess! Daniel, however, is something else - he's great. There are plenty of obstacles and surprises in the way of this romance but it is definitely worth it in the end. It is a great read, with a fantastic mix of characters - especially the budding Miss Marple!! It takes the reader on the full gamut of emotions and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it - another brilliant read from this talented author.

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest review after choosing to read it and not wanting to put it down!

The time it took me to read this book is no reflection on its content, just a busy schedule!
I hadn’t read any of Angela Barton’s books before, but bought another of her books when I was half-way through this as I love her style of writing.
The story follows Tess, her boyfriend Blake, best friend Holly and the sexy artist Daniel through many ups and downs of life. I loved how this story wasn’t a typical story of boy meets girl and had some aspects that were relatable and more in keeping with real life.
I really enjoyed the descriptions of both the characters and the scenery, and the story was excellent - I’m already looking forward to reading her next book!

I adored Magnolia House so there was no way I could resist joining the tour for the latest Angela Barton novel.

Everything is in place in Tess's life so why does something feel off, particularly with her boyfriend Blake?  Daniel is still struggling to come to terms with a decision he made years ago - a decision that had had a catastrophic chain reaction.  When sparks fly between the two it should be simple - but it isn't.

Angela writes wonderful characters with depth and relateable flaws/dilemmas that just warm your heart.  Daniel is just desperate and needing to be loved but won't allow it to happen without a fight.  Tess struggles with the guilt of breaking up with Blake and Blake is just the ultimate in swarm and despicable behaviour.

Add together the ingredients of romance, a past mistake, a bad guy (and his mother) and a warm and cosy story of two people with unmistakable chemistry and you have yourself the perfect love story with a hint of drama to add to the fun.

Just grab a copy and curl up with it - you won't be disappointed.

This is a book that has a little bit of everything, which always makes for a magical reading experience and I loved spending time in the company of Tess as she faces all that life throws her way!

She's been in a relationship with Blake for 5 years and the magic has gone! Blake doesn't see it the same way though and goes to extremely desperate measures to keep her by his side. You can understand his despair but the methods he uses are very low as he plays on Tess and her genuine caring nature.

With all the drama going on in her life Tess finds a distraction in the form of Daniel! He's a local artist with a twin sister and has suffered tragedy in his past, and finds painting a way to help him through the darker times he has faced. Tess finds herself growing very fond of Daniel and their relationship is just the sweetest - they both find one another so easy to open up to and help support one another with various issues that they have to deal with. I also loved the storyline that featured Denise - his sister - as this added another emotional thread and kept it feeling very real and relatable.

I loved the way that Tess conducts herself throughout the book which made her such a lovely character to follow. There are flashes of humour that mix well with the more serious aspects of the storyline and it was just a pleasure to read from start to finish.

The story opens with the appearance of our first protagonist, Daniel Cavanagh, painter.

After the tragic death of his parents, and a terrible accident with his best friend Sean, a strange "mania" begins to haunt him; repeat each action three times to prevent something bad from happening.

Tess, who we could define as our saint (really), works instead in a small shop in the same town but she dreams of opening a teashop.

Easy, you say. They meet, fall in love and all lived happily ever after!

Obviously no. As in any self-respecting love story, we need a villain, in our case it's Blake, Tess's boyfriend.

But let's go back to the original question; what a person would be willing to do for love.

Suppose you eavesdrop your girlfriend or boyfriend saying that he is seriously considering leaving you because, after two years, you have become a little...different than you were. What would you do? Would you come to lie about something as important as your own health in order to keep that person with you?

That's what our Blake does in this book. And not about something stupid.

But if you are curious to know how this complicated story continues, you just have to read this book.

I read it in two days, and personally I found it not only very well written, but with a story intertwined in a really not bad way!

This story is the perfect companion for when you want to curl up on a winter's night or any night and get lost in another world. It is the kind of book that you say one more chapter before bed and the next time you see the end of a chapter you realize you have read 8 chapters. You will get lost in this story and lose track of time. I wouldn't suggest reading this book if you are on a bus or train, you may just miss your stop.
This book is the definition of an uplifting romantic story, you will find yourself falling in love with some of the characters while at the same time disliking some other characters. I love that this book really shows you the view points of Tess, Blake, Daniel and a few other characters. This means that even if you begin to dislike a character you end up seeing their reasoning for doing something. Overall I really enjoyed this book and although this is my first book by Angela Barton it certainly won't be my last. I enjoyed the way she wrote this book and honestly can't wait to check out other books she has written.

You have a good life when you have a job you enjoy, a lovely little house you can call your own and a great boyfriend. Tess can tick al of those boxes, but suddenly she realises that maybe she should untick box number three.

Once she has thought it through and came to a decision, nothing can go wrong, right? Well, wrong …

People should know by now that lies don’t get them the happy ending they had in mind, because the truth will always come out. By doing this you not only put your own life on hold, but someone else’s too. Shame on you!

I am always happy to see that this author has published a new book and I am very happy that I could immerse myself again in another one of her great stories.

I love the way she can always add some little jokes to put a smile on my face.

A wonderful story that I enjoyed a lot. 5 stars.

Thank you, Angela Barton and Choc Lit

𝗠𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦 ⠀

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was one of those books that had me from the start and I loved the characters as soon as we meet them.⠀

Tess is a lovely character, she has a tendency to put others before her, and as a result ends up staying in a relationship that is going nowhere, with a boyfriend claiming to be critically ill.⠀

Blake, Tess’s boyfriend is an absolute pig, and I hated him from the off 🤷🏻‍♀️⠀

Then we meet gorgeous Daniel, who is the perfect leading man, and who I was desperately rooting for in gaining Tess’s affections.⠀

A brilliant book with a lovely story and lots of lovely relatable characters.⠀

I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.⠀

An intriguing read with romance, deceit and deception

When Tess Fenton moved from Cornwall to Nottingham she was excited to experience big city life. She finds work in the busy centre of town but chooses to live in a small village away from the crowds. Tess's ambition is to become a baker and is unexpectedly offered a job to cater for an exhibition. Then Tess's boyfriend stuns her with news that requires her to make a life changing decision.

Well written with twists and turns to keep the most questioning reader engrossed.

It made me devour it in two days and took my mind off a certain virus which everyone is talking about and my tumble dryer breaking for a 4th time.

This book is not one you can put down for a few days and pick back up. Angela's style of writing and her twisty plot make it difficult for you to walk away from it. I kept telling everyone I was going to tidy my house and then a few minutes later find myself back in the world of Tess Fenton.

Lovely slow burn romance with a great cast of characters.

I tried to start this book back in September but I never managed to get into it properly so I re-started it yesterday and gave it another ago. This is the second of Angela Barton’s books I’ve read and I do really like her writing style. I wasn’t keen on Blake’s storyline in this book and I think it should potentially come with a trigger warning as I’m sure for many, it could be very upsetting. However, I really liked the build up of Tess and Daniel’s relationship. I think it could have done without the dramatic misunderstanding at the end though! Overall, a nice easy read!

So Tess and Daniel make a lovely couple but I would off liked to have read a list chapter off what happened next? Did Tess move in with Daniel? Did she finally get to have her own tea shop whilst Daniel had his gallery? Also would off been lovely to see what happened to his mother once she got arrested and her trial.

But apart from those questions I’ve asked myself. It was a bit off a confusing book as it has numerous didn’t POVs which flowed sort off but was confusing as to where it went next and who’s POV I was reading next.

It was a charming loveable love story which I would read again

I’m a sucker for a love story, and this does not disappoint.

I gorged on this book, devouring every word as i read about Blake emotionally blackmailing Tess. Tess exploring her growing feelings for budding artist Daniel, intertwined with Tess concentrating on her first catering event which may, or may not lead to the dream job of running her own little catering business/tea shop.

Believable, captivating and beautifully written, this book will satisfy all budding romantics.

A long series of misunderstandings and helpful friends bedevil the romance between Daniel and Tess! This is a sweet romance with a totally feel good factor, just the thing to lift your spirits at any time of year. Curl up in front of the fire or on the beach, just make sure you have a cup of tea and a supply of chocolate or biscuits to hand as you won't want to leave the book till you reach the end. Enjoy it, I did!

Some books can be dipped in and out of quite happily as you go through your usual routines- perhaps even missing a day between visits to the characters and locations. However You've Got My Number is quite addictive and this approach fell by the wayside as I got more and more involved with Tess and her life. If you like a story where the characters take over while you are reading then look no further!

Tess has everything going right for her. A job she loves, a home she loves, and a boyfriend she loves. Well, maybe. When Tess meets local artist, Daniel, her life begins to feel not quite as in order as she thought.

I flew through the first 100 pages and then kinda stopped? the story was a lovely read but I feel like everything that happened I already knew and their were no surprises or twists. The mother in law part at the end just seemed a bit unnecessary and the twin mix up again was obvious. I’d give it a 3.5 as I did love both the characters!

This was an enjoyable read even though it was a little predictable at the end. Why do romances always have miscommunication as their climax?
