Ann Moffatt spent a lifetime in the computer industry in the United Kingdom and Australia, rising to the top of her profession at a time when women were second class citizens in business and in technology. She succeeded through hard work, intelligence, and an unquenchable belief that ultimately she would succeed on her merits.
Through her career she faced subtle and no-so-subtle sexual discrimination on many levels. She never let it get her down, proving by example that it was unwarranted and showing other woman the path to equality.
Her personal life was also marked by poor treatment, which she overcame with remarkable equanimity. She never complained, but got on with the job, and with life.
Ann was born in England in 1939. She showed a remarkable aptitude for maths and became one of the UK’s first female computer programmers. She became recognised as a leading authority on software development and the emerging field of database management.
She moved to Australia in her early 30s when she was headhunted to work on the biggest computer implementation in the country. She became a leading figure in the Australian IT industry and a noted educator and champion for women in the profession.
Ann has written a fantastic story. She covers the IT Industry from its inception to well into the current century. The Australian section was brilliant, my IT career spanned the same era and I felt connected to many of the events and people cited.
As for her personal life. How one person can have such a full life both professionally and privately leave me in total awe.
Well done Ann, and thank you so much fro taking the time to put this story into print.
Oh wow. This was a fantastic read. I was enthralled, enlightened, intrigued, shocked, and tons of other great adjectives. It’s brilliant and I loved it, and learned so much. Many cameos by some other great names in the industry too. I’m so glad Ann wrote it all down (we all know how important documentation is hehe). What an amazing lady. Highly recommended read for other women in IT.
