I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and have lived in suburban Minneapolis, Minnesota for the past forty-five years, with occasional sojourns here and there. My interests range far and wide, but
I don't do windows and I'm not a good dancer. I do like to cook, though, and am especially fascinated by steam power, sailing ships, airships, streamlined locomotives and automobiles, and all things streamline moderne.

Author CW Hawes is at it again with his fabulous character Justinia Wright, investigator par excellence. Tina, as she is known to friends, with brother Harry and his wife Bea are challenged to free Gavin Gamble from prison.

Tina is a six-foot, cigar-smoking, and classical musician with expensive taste and lifestyle. With her background in art forgery, ex-CIA, and connections in every meaningful place is up to find the real killer of James Bowen. An attractive offer of $750K to succeed is only one reason Justinia takes on the case.

CW Hawes writes with an effortless style that keeps the pages moving. His character and plot development continuously improve with each book in this series. He grabs you early with enticements, then you willingly hitch a ride to find out all the twists and turns of this mystery.

"A mother picking up her newborn for the first time would not have been as gentle as Tina was in removing the protective styrofoam and extracting the four bottles out of the box. And to my knowledge, Tina's never produced a newborn.
When she was done, there was $45,600 in rare vintage madeira sitting on her desk. All from the vaunted 1808 vintage. Three bottles of Terrantez and one of Sercial.
"Are you actually going to drink that stuff?"
She didn't take her eyes off the bottles.
"Maybe. Some day when there's something special to celebrate."
I shook my head. She just spent over forty-five thousand bucks on four bottles of wine that she probably won't ever drink."

Author Hawes has mastered prose to activate the senses, place reader interest into overdrive, and make his fans beg for more. The relationship between characters is unfalteringly consistent. Tina needs to find the who, but the more challenging aspect is proving it so justice can be effectively served. This mystery will keep you on the edge of your seat, with no guaranteed outcome!

I totally recommend this cozy mystery that combines easy reading in a Who Dun It like the game of Clue. Undoubtedly, CW Hawes story style, with a larger-than-life Investigator Justinia Wright, is like Rex Stout, with Nero Wolf. Readable and enjoyable more than once! I'm guilty; I read this twice as it was that good.

It's All In The Family

I thoroughly enjoy the well-defined characters in CW Hawes Justinia Wright Mystery Series. She’s a former CIA operative turned private investigator with a taste for classical music, rare wines, and gourmet food. At six feet, the stogie-smoking Tina as she is affectionately known as by her brother, towers over her sibling and most of her clients. Like his well-known sister, brother Harry has elevated tastes in food and wine. He’s mad for his wife Bea and together with their cats and I believe there’s a dog somewhere in the menagerie too have a household forever in chaos trying to solve unusual cases. In this story the dynamic duo of Tina and Harry Wright set out to free Gavin Gamble from prison. Gamble was charged with murdering his uncle. Witnesses found Gamble standing over the victim with the murder weapon in hand. Gamble was quickly convicted and spends his days depressed and unwilling to fight for his freedom. Even Gavin’s wife is convinced of his guilt. Tina and Harry along with small army of assistants investigate several suspects to find the real murderer. Like a game of Clue, it’s a mind-bender to figure out whether it was Martin in the kitchen with a revolver or Richard in the billiard room with a pistol.
This cozy mystery is the perfect book for a lazy post-holiday afternoon snuggled under one of the ten throw blankets received for Christmas. I highly recommend it.

The eighth entry in CW Hawes' cozy mystery series featuring ex-CIA operative Justinia Wright finds our heroine grappling with a difficult puzzle. In what appears to be an open and shut case of murder, Gavin Gamble was found with his dead Uncle James, who had recently cut his nephew out of his will. Gavin is now languishing in prison and even his wife Molly believes he must have committed the crime. But a mysterious note sent to Molly after the trial suggests another story, and, after reading it, Tina's instinct tells her Gavin is innocent.

Proving what her gut tells her is no easy matter, even for the supremely confident redhead. Assisted by her brother Harry, his wife Bea, and her go-to army of paid surveillants (not to mention the Wright family's three cats and affenpinscher, Buddy), Tina must put together the pieces of an elaborate murder plot. Along the way, she puffs cigars and indulges in her beloved vintage madeira, while Harry cooks up his usual gourmet lunches and dinners. And Bea, determined not to become "a drag on the organization" introduces her new professional look.

James Bowen is dead, murdered, and Gavin Gamble has been convicted and sent to prison. He’s the inheritor and obvious suspect; the circumstantial evidence is damning, and the other potential suspects have solid alibis. But when a lawyer comes to Justinia Wright for help, he makes the case that the wrong guy may be incarcerated. Then the fun starts; Justinia, her brother Harry, and crew step into action, unpacking the stories of the unsavory suspects remaining at large. C.W. Hawes keeps managing to improve what is already a terrific series of mysteries. His straightforward prose, nicely etched characters, and exceptional plotting skills make this classic whodunit hum along. Engaging in this series will not disappoint even the most serious mystery aficionado. Highly recommended over a glass of Bual Madeira.

Private detective Justinia Wright, ex-CIA, ex art forger, current concert pianist, and her brother Harry, take cases from the wealthy. So this not about a struggling P.I. who works hard and gets little money. These two are both millionaires. And Tina (Justinia) is very smart, perhaps a genius.
This time, they are hired for $750,000 (including expenses) to Right a Wrong and get a man released from jail by finding the actual killer. Their only clue to begin is a letter stating one of the witnesses may have given false testimony. But what witness and what testimony?

It’s a difficult case, but then, Tina is very smart.

It’s a good whodunit, and Tina is a well developed and unique character. If you are not bothered by hearing each and every item they ate during the investigation, I recommend it for you.

Who really killed James Bowen?
Justina (Tina) Wright is at it again! To right a wrong done to Gavin Gamble. There are many players on the field that Tina and her brother have to sort out. You may be able to figure out the key players, but the challenge comes into play to figure out how. Being a genius isn't easy. Reading between the lines is easy for her, proving it is another. With the killer tying up loose ends, will Tina be able to get it sorted before the killer gets away with murder?
I don't want to give away too much, except to say it will keep you guessing! I look forward to reading more from CW Hawes in this Justina Wright series!

Fun and Witty Mystery

Justinian Wright has a way about her, a sense of style and justice which she brings to every case. When asked to help the wife of Gavin Gamble prove her husband innocent in the murder of his uncle, she accepts, for an outrageous fee. As the case goes on, members of the family underestimate Justinia’s intelligence, leading her down a different path. I especially liked the “Finale”. It reminded me of Poirot, and the way he wrapped his cases by going back through the evidence. Enjoyable, witty mystery with colorful characters. I recommend this book to fans of Agatha Christie!

I love the recurring characters in the Justinia Wright mysteries. To Right a Wrong was a fascinating mystery. I do not want to give anything away so let me just say that I could not put the book down. This time Tina will have to break an unbreakable alibi if she is to free the client from jail. I am always in awe at how Mr. Hawes manages to make sense of all the chaos. Don't miss this great mystery!

Another winner by CW Hawes!
I first read one of the Justina Wright series a month ago, and I’m hooked. The characters are so multi-faceted, I can’t wait to turn the page to see what they’ll do next. The plot was more complex this time, with more twists and turns, and even more danger!!

I have a deep appreciation for old-fashioned mysteries when private detectives gathered clues, some real and some imagined, sorted them out, and gathered various and sundry suspects together, usually in the drawing room of a mansion, before revealing the villain in an atmosphere filled with bitterness, fear, jealousy, and suspense.

In his newest mystery, To Right A Wrong, CW Hawes has managed to assemble all of the key ingredients of those old-fashioned, drawing room mysteries of Nero Wolfe and Agatha Christie and bring them into a modern world replete with cell phones, GPS devices, and phone hacking systems.
The investigation is orchestrated by one of the most intriguing literary private eyes of all, the unflappable Justinia Wright, who stands six-feet tall, smokes cigars, drinks high-dollar vintage Madeira wine as though she’s sipping water, once forged art to make a fortune, and drives as though she should have arrived yesterday even though she only left this morning.

A millionaire is dead. His nephew, Gavin Gamble, sits alone in the darkness of a prison cell, charged with his murder. The case was open and shut against him.. Ask anyone. Two witnesses testified they saw him standing above the deceased with the smoking gun in his hand. He had a motive. He had been cut out of the dead man’s will.
Gamble’s own wife believes he is guilty. His attorney is convinced of Gamble’s guilt. The facts, CW Hawes writes, “remain wickedly present and impossible to dismiss.” So why does Gamble insist he’s innocent? And is anybody listening? Justinia Wright is.

She believes the murder was motivated by greed. She says: “Greed will drive people to sell their mother and sister into prostitution. It will turn friends into enemies. And it is the curse of such a death. I think greed is the worst of the seven deadly sins. Greed is desire gone awry.” She methodically works her way through the suspects. And there are many. To right a wrong, Justina only has to find one answer. Who was the greediest suspect of the bunch?

The story moves along at a leisurely pace, the dialogue is laced with biting and sometimes dark humor, and in the seedy rich man’s world of lies and deceit, the first liar never has a chance. To Right a Wrong is my kind of mystery. Modern technology doesn’t solve the crime. Old-fashioned investigative work does just fine.
