In the aftermath of a global solar flare that has decimated the human population and wreaked havoc on Earth, Dr. Riley Poole embarks on a treacherous 1,500-mile journey to learn the fate of her two youngest children. After making the heart-wrenching decision to leave her injured daughter, Julia, in Virginia, Riley and her new husband, Coop, strike out into the wilderness toward Colorado.
Along the way, they cross paths with old acquaintances and combine resources to travel together. Riley and Coop soon get life-altering news and learn that one member of their group has put them in grave danger, forcing them to stay one step ahead of a hostile, rogue government. Will Riley have the wit and courage to survive the journey and reunite her family?
Really enjoying this series. My usual read is epic fantasies but my son gave me S.A. Stirling, Dies the Fire last year and the EMP post-apocalyptic survival type is a nice change. I have always enjoyed survival road trips and this fits the bill. Also appreciate that it is not a novella that some authors/publishers seem to pass off. Characters are well rounded. The adversity that compromises their travels are nonstop and kept me reading well into the night. Almost like Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. Keeping my eye on when the next book becomes available.
Of all the characters characters in this story, Riley is one that stands out. She’s strong, determined and very stubborn. Not perfect but Riley has the heart of a lion... or a mama bear! Of course she is just one of many interesting and flawed characters that help make this an exciting read. She, Coop and their friends must make the trek to find Riley’s other two children. Chock full of danger, every step could deliver death from illness, malnutrition, accident or a bullet. I got so involved that I reacted emotionally, even when it was Riley being impossible. And I loved this book!
The author obviously has no experience with horses. They aren’t just some magical solution to the lack of mechanical transportation. They require a lot of care to stay healthy and strong enough to move you and your supplies over long distances. With all the times she left them in their tack in the rain, they would have had sores all over their back in a short amount of time and then been worthless.
Less detail on a long long trip. I'm still upset by the sudden appearance of everything that is needed but I do like happy endings. Continuity is not good so I would not recommend this book to hard apocalyptic readers. But do recommend it for easy reading with happy endings
Love this series fast pace adventure of servival in a world with out modern conveniences. Can't wait for next book to see how it all comes together glad coming out next month .would recommend this series to anyone that enjoys clean adventure into how people can work together to over come hard times.
When you see cracks and fractures it's time to search out a source before they result in the full blown disaster faced by this quintet of heroes/heroines. Solve one problem and learn there another mountain staring you in your face. Could this story be our "caution" light or are we changing to a full out warning?
I'm really enjoying series. I can't wait for the third book to come out in April. I don't usually my book. I usually rent them from the library for free when they become available but these are so good I've been buying them.
Fighting her way toward Colorado with Coop as her husband, many hardships are faced. Love the characters and cannot quit reading. Looking forward to book three.
I’m loving this series and I’m so attached to the characters. The action never stops in this series and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one.
