Another epic Superman story for the ages by the team of Bendis, Romita Jr., and Janson!
A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.
Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.
Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.
Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.
Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.
Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.
He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.
You know I pretty much do not review single issues of digital floppies, and that at times I make exceptions. As I keep losing track of which volume is where (I finish a story arc and try to find the TPB list) the best I can answer is that Action Comics The House of Kent will hopefully be collected a some point in late 2021.
If it is-read it, especially if you like Superman. I was very skeptical about Bendis taking on the character, as I had always felt a little let down by Powers. The thing is that Bendis seems to get what are the core concepts of the main characters, even when he includes two Superboys in a story arc. Lois is a Lois for 2020 and 2021, and even Jimmy Olsen isn't a lame character by the end of this arc.
This a story Bendis has been building towards. The Invisible Mafia of Metropolis that runs crime in Metropolis has always avoided confrontation with Superman. A newly added powered individual has flouted that rule, and not only confronted Superman but killed one of his friends.
Now, with Jonathan and Conner Kent, Kara and Clark himself the battle is one. Lois is dealing with the Mafia's head and the FBI investigation into the Daily Planet.
What helps sell this story in Romita Jr.'s art in conjunction with Bendis' writing. The pacing is top notch, and as he showed on The Eternals and his brief time drawing Sentry in World War Hulk, Romita Jr. can do EPIC. You believe that these mythological beings are doing battle on a grand scale.
The difference between Romita Jr. and my other favorite epic comic book artists is that Romita Jr. can do the small mundane things such as Lois Lane confronting Cameron Chase in The Planet's offices. (Sorry, Jack Kirby, George Perez and Phil Jimenez, but Romita Jr. does these small scenes better than you in my opinion).
One of the most fun and fulfilling Superman arcs in a long time.
