Christmas in July

Can you find the Christmas spirit in the wrong place, at the wrong time?

As Riley scores a job on a feature film, she’s eager to prove herself to Damian, the famous director she can’t stop thinking about. When they fly to Queenstown, New Zealand, to film on the snowy mountains in July, she’s ready for any discomfort. What she’s not ready for is a snowstorm that cuts her off from the rest of the crew or an unexpected visitor who seeks shelter in her cabin.

Any other girl would love to cozy up with Jonas, a gorgeous ski instructor carrying bags of party food. Not Riley. She’s desperate to get back to her job, back to Damian. The last thing she’s looking for is a protective Swedish guy telling her what she can and can’t do. But as things start to slip out of her control, Riley is forced to rethink her priorities.

Is she headed down the wrong path? And is it possible she has more in common with the Swedish guy than she thought?

Enni Amanda is a Finnish–New Zealand rom-com author who writes warm, funny love stories with real-life bite.

She immigrated from Finland to New Zealand in 2006 and promptly fell in love with the scenery, the people, and the strange thrill of not having to defrost a car every morning. After years spent studying filmmaking, running a film festival, and zig-zagging between two countries that really should be closer together, she discovered screenwriting, which eventually led to writing books (a slippery slope).

These days she lives in the Waikato (close to the rolling hills of the Shire), raising two energetic boys, designing things, and writing books while heroically avoiding housework.

3.5. A short romantic christmas novella, I liked it!

Riley is in New Zealand working on a film and is staying alone in a cabin in the mountains and one day Jonas, a ski instructor is on his way to a christmas in July party and they get stuck in the cabin together.

Its a short novella so it was a fast read and there wasn’t a lot of space for development so I would definitely like to have gotten more from this story because I liked the concept and the characters. I loved that Jonas was Swedish too, that was just a bonus for me as a swede

Overall it was cozy and cute and I would recommend it, I just wanted a bit more tho and it was predictable. Maybe it needed more depth too

I loved the idea of the story but I kept getting annoyed at Riley's self absorbed and arrogant nature. I felt like there were quite a few contradictory flaws in all the characters personalities and the ending was just a bit too rushed. Overall though I loved the use of metaphors in the book and thought plot was cute and witty! I also loved the idea of mid-winter Christmas! xx

Just as it says : a romantic short read; a sweet New Zealand novella.
It was fun little afternoon read while snowed in at home.

Riley is in New Zealand working as a script supervisor on a film, but rather than staying with the crew she’s sent to stay alone in a cabin in the mountains. A huge winter storm hits and she winds up stranded with a cabin mate, Jonas, who is a ski instructor that was on his way to a Christmas in July party so he’s stocked with food. Too bad Riley is hung up on the film’s director, Damian, and is anxious to get back to him. She barely avoids catastrophe trying to get down the mountain. She and Jonas save each other and have some sparks. But Riley still feels that she must return to the film set ASAP. She may never see Jonas again. Are Damian or this job worth missing out on what could be? Could she have another chance with Jonas?

There can’t be too much development in a short novella, so I’d definitely like to know more and see more in this story. But it’s fun to just take it as it is. Stuck in a cozy cabin during a snowstorm with a handsome ski instructor? OK! More romance could’ve been good. But the pull of real world job opportunities kept butting in. Yes, it wraps up too easily, but it gave me what I wanted. I found it to be an enjoyable quick read.

Sweet short novel

I found this book on the kindle store for free and thought it looked like the perfect cosy winter book and I was not left disappointed! The characters in the book were endearing, realistic, and very well described making that story have depth too it even though it is a short story (65 pages). I found that by the end of the book I wished I could have read more of the story. I was definitely rooting for Riley and Jonas! A great wintry read perfect for any journeys and lifts your spirit!

A great little short story that took me around an hour to read!
It was very predictable, and I have read books with similar storylines but it was still an enjoyable story - just obviously not an in depth book.
If you need something easy to read, then this is the book for you!

Christmas in July - Enni Amanda

Can you find the Christmas spirit in the wrong place, at the wrong time?

As Riley scores a job on a feature film, she’s eager to prove herself to Damian, the famous director she can’t stop thinking about. When they fly to Queenstown, New Zealand, to film on the snowy mountains in July, she’s ready for any discomfort. What she’s not ready for is a snowstorm that cuts her off from the rest of the crew or an unexpected visitor who seeks shelter in her cabin.

This is a very short novella, so there is no time to connect with any of the characters. Set in a snowstorm in New Zealand, this book is a cosy read for winter. By the end of the book I found myself wanting to read more about Riley and Jonas.

If you are looking a quick, easy, wintery - but not really Christmassy book then this is the book for you. Such a sweet romance, without the usual filler.

A short, mostly sweet and slightly sensual "snowed in" romance with lovely exchanges and warm chemistry between immediately likeable characters. Highlights for me were the subtle and not-so-subtle cultural and regional winks, and the cute tropey moments that Enni Amanda pulled off to perfection. CHRISTMAS IN JULY is the download to keep in your back pocket for when you need a heart-tingling pick-me-up on the go.

Adorable!!

A short, sweet, christmassy-but-not-really-christmas story about two people forced together by a snow storm with some near death experiences thrown in for good measure. It was so good that I'd gladly read a full length novel following Riley and Jonas if it were available. The authors writing is so easy to get lost in so I absolutely flew through this and all I want now is more!

I enjoyed reading this book. It was a nice read with a bit of danger and romance. There was nothing extraordinary about it, but it was a good winter romance. There wasn't really much christmas going on, but the setting was a log cabin in the snowy mountains so I let that go!

An enjoyable, but overall average, read.

Randomly found this little one on Amazon. Short and sweet Xmas tale.

Riley scored a job on a feature film with a well-known and genius director! She is eager to prove herself to him and move up the chain and someday direct her own films. They fly to Queenstown, New Zealand to film the final scenes on a snowy mountain. What she's not ready for is a snowstorm that cuts off from the rest of the crew and leaves her stranded with a stranger. Any other girl would count themselves lucky to be stranded with such a gorgeous ski instructor who is carrying bags of party food, but Riley doesn't have time for that. She needs this storm to hurry up so she can join the rest of the film crew. However, things start to slip out of her control so she maybe has to rethink her priorities.

I really feel like this should've been a longer novel. I would've loved to see them together more. They were adorable together and he was just the dang sweetest. Sure one part made me shake my fist at him, but I loved them together. I really think they needed more time!! Maybe I'm just biased ;) but yesssss I wish this was longer.

They were adorable though. A very sweet romance. And a pretend Xmas celebration. Super cute and cheesy.

Gah. I wanted to shake Riley though. How could she be so blind about that dang director???????? Especially after the story Jonas told her!!! Gah. Daft girl. But love/lust is blind for sure. I also really wanted to shake her when she tried to take off in car. Gah again.

But yes - this was cute and short and sweet. Riley needed a good shaking tho, but they were cute. I really wish this had been longer. The love was too quick for my liking for these two completely different people. I'll give this 3 stars as an overall.

Riley is a script supervisor on a movie set but when weather turns bad, for some strange reason, they send just her around the mountain to an airb&b cabin where the weather will be even worse. She is just getting settled when she suddenly decides to head back to the set for the evening production meeting.

But it seemed that in only thirty minutes so much snow had fallen she could barely find her car, and now there was a man in her driveway next to his car insisting she could not go anywhere in this crazy snowstorm. Then he grabs her and forces her back into the cabin, yet she doesn't seem overly concerned but will position herself near the kitchen knives just in case.

Then we've got Jonas stripping down to his long underwear and sitting with his legs spread and again, Riley isn't worried, but now getting a little turned on. REALLY?

And how does this work - "Jonas hummed something in Swedish"? How would Riley know if it was Swedish? HE WAS HUMMING!!

Also, it appears the cabin they get stuck in has a front door that opens OUT, - weird, extremely dangerous, and just NO!

Plus, Jonas was driving a "much sturdier four-wheel drive with a front grill" in the beginning and by the end it turns out it was a station wagon! Ugh!!

This book just kept taking one odd turn after another.  It most definitely could have used some serious editing. Lots of typos and missing words, and just all around wrong directions in the writing.

A good story is all about the details and this one was serious lacking.

This is a sweet romance read with a little bit of heat.

Heather's Notes
This story was cute and short. More short than cute really. I ended feeling somewhat sorry for Jonas and felt like Riley needed a kick in the pants. Still in the end she got her act together, and us readers got our happy ever after.

This story is a quick interesting read. While it's really not Christmas time, it is winter in New Zealand. Riley is part of a movie crew that the director wants real snow for his movie. The living arrangements leave Riley on a mountain miles away from the rest of the movie crew. The weather has been nice but turns nasty while Riley settles into her cabin. To make matters worse there's a stranger needing shelter as the weather is getting really nasty. The guy is a Swedish hunk but Riley is not interested. The weather gets really nasty and Riley is unable to leave the cabin to go to a meeting with the film crew. Matters get worse than that and as things come to a head and Riley gets into real trouble trying to get to the rest of the film crew. Romance does abound and Riley finds her HEA. I received a copy of this book with the promise of an honest review which I am freely giving.

Enni Amanda is my first new-to-me author of 2022 and her writing style is very enjoyable. I'll definitely be reading more of her books in the future.

As for 𝘾𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙢𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙅𝙪𝙡𝙮, I loved that it was set in New Zealand - somewhere I've always wanted to visit. And the snowstorm? Definitely gives this book a Christmas-y feel.

I don't know that I'd really classify this little novella as a romance. I was 60% into the book before anything happened at all. The last chapter and a half? Definitely romance. But the rest of the book? Mostly just two people stuck in a cabin during a blizzard.

Like many novellas, this is a very quick read. If you're looking for something little to finish out a month with or kickstart your reading, this is a great one to pick up.

This novella is about ski instructor, Jonas, a Swede who gate crashes at the cabin where Riley is staying. They are stuck together in a snowstorm and have to share the cabin and one bed.
Jonas was a likeable main character, caring and kind. The way his character was written portrayed him to be foreign with his mannerisms and reactions. Riley, I found to be self absorbed and irritating. She was rude and irrational and obsessed with her job. She wasn't an endearing or likeable main female lead.
There wasn't much to the storyline and there was no build up to their relationship. The story felt like it had two parts where they were sort of getting to know each other and then the next part they were together for six months already.
It was a quick, clean read and I rate this book 3.5*.

Short with interesting Xmas quirk!

It is an interesting tale but I find it a little frustrating, US girl so enamoured by the stardom of LA and her boss as a film maker gets frustrated and paranoid about her job when she is stranded in a snow storm with a hunky stranger. Seriously wouldn’t you be more worried about the stranger, food or keeping warmth. The saving grace for me was that she did realise the truth of her boss even if the love at first sight thing happened. I found them rather unmemorable characters as we learn so little about them that they remain a little 2D but that may just be me. Fun and short.

I usually read m/m romances but I liked the premise of Christmas in July, so I decided to give it a go and I wasn’t disappointed.

This is a cute short story of two people realising, when viewed by the eyes of a complete stranger, that what they think they want is not a good life choice.

Riley is an American script supervisor trying to make it in the cutthroat world of filmmaking, and Jonas is a Swedish ski instructor. They are snowed in together on a New Zealand mountain, which does not go smoothly... 4 stars

Riley is in a cabin on a mountain in New Zealand when a huge snowstorm hits. She meets Swedish ski-trainer, Jonas when he seeks shelter from the storm. Although they are both drawn to each other, Riley is focused on her director, Damien and Jonas on getting to the woman who may give him a better job. I liked how this came together in the end, but I would've liked a proposal with a ring and as much as they've been together, a pregnancy announcement would've been good too. I would love to read of their travel adventures and their future together.

Riley is part of a movie production team, and they go to New Zealand in July to finish some winter scenes. On the way to her cabin accommodation on the mountain, she gets caught in a snow storm, and a stranger asks her for refuge for the night. The stranger in Jonas, a Swedish ski instructor stranded on his was to a mid-winter "Christmas" party.

I found Riley to be so unbelievably stupid, with zero self awareness, and lacking in common sense. She was so obsessed and infatuated with her boss, that she risked death (I am not joking), just to show him how devoted she was to her job and to make sure that she was still the best to him.

Jonas was wonderful. He was thoughtful, caring, and was there to catch Riley after every stupid mistake she made. It is because of him that I gave this novella 3 stars. Otherwise, it would have gotten 1 star for Riley.

I stumbled across this because it was very cheap in the kindle sale and it looked cute and wholesome and that's exactly what it was ! A lovely story. I'm trying to branch out more into different genres and I enjoyed this romance. I like the way the protagonist has a moment of realising her self worth and the importance of finding somebody that treats you with proper respect. Yes in parts it felt a little predictable and there were some moments of almost unbelievable serendipity but it was a beautiful quick read with relatable characters achieved in such a short novella.

Cute cozy romance

When I started reading this story, I thought it would be more about the film industry. The surprise snowstorm changed everything for the main characters. She was so focused on her career that she kept putting herself in danger and he kept rescuing her. Quick interesting read. Enjoy.

Sweet little unexpected romance.

I enjoyed this short story, lots of feels, and more dimensions than I'd expected. She's trying to become a direct. But to her dismay stuck in a rental cabin during a snow storm.
He's cute, and stuck in the storm, who h grows fierce around them.
And more solid than the director she's crushing on.

Christmas in July is one of those books you immediately feel has wrapped you up in a warm hug. In which the characters & their story creep gradually & unobtrusively under your skin, wind around your heartstrings. This is a beautifully understated but gloriously romantic love story, featuring fully-rounded relatable characters with ordinary, everyday lives and ordinary, everyday problems.

Short and quick read!

This is a short, sort of cute and quick romcom read if you're looking for an hour of escape binge reading something! I'm in the process of reading of a couple of heavy books on history and philosophy that this lil book was a good escape mechanism.
Also, a nice reaffirmation that one can fall in love under any circumstances.
