The Rainier Series #2

In Light of the Summit

Rate this book
The much-anticipated sequel to IN SIGHT OF THE MOUNTAIN!

After Anna Gallagher’s first climb on Mt. Rainier, she faces a new challenge—enduring the ridicule and threats that come with breaking tradition. In 1890, being a young female mountaineer makes polite society uncomfortable, even angry. But despite the threats and inherent risk, she still has plans for another climb, even if it jeopardizes her family bookstore, and puts her in more danger than she ever imagined.

Emily Watson has always been close with the Gallagher family. As a young girl she dreamed of a wealthy husband, a fine house, and a future in Seattle society and now she finally has it. Her desires couldn’t be more different than Anna’s, but she’s confronted with her own invisible mountain to climb when she’s suddenly poverty-stricken. She must decide what matters most, and whether true love is worth waiting for.

IN LIGHT OF THE SUMMIT is a captivating story of ambition, heartbreak, and redemption. It’s a tale of two childhood friends navigating womanhood in the late 19th century, with as much grace as they can muster, while still figuring out how to be true to themselves.

It’s Friday! The work week is over and it feels nice to know we have the weekend to take a second to catch up. With all of the turmoil happening in our country and a lot of places expecting us to act like nothing happened has been hard. This isn’t an issue that can just be swept under the rug again. I’m planning to take a second to catch my breath, but then we need to get back to calling for action.⁣

In Light of the Summit by Jamie Mcgillen released this month and is the sequel to In Sight of the Mountain. I don’t want to give the synopsis for this one since it takes place right where the first book ends. So let me tell you that this series is about Anna who is a woman in the 1890s determined to summit Mt. Rainier. We also follow the stories of the other women in her life. ⁣

❤️Review❤️⁣

In Light of the Summit was kindly sent to me by Jamie herself. She is one of the sweetest authors I’ve ever had the pleasure of interacting with. I really enjoyed this sequel. It was less than 300 pages, which made it an extremely fast read. I love how independent, strong, and brave the female characters are in this book. We truly see them reach into themselves to be the truest they can to themselves no matter what the cost. I also love how Jamie weaves in the story of the indigenous people during this time period. It’s truly a unique and captivating story. It makes me as a woman want to go summit my “mountain”. It’s a literal mountain in the book, but I think it really is the message of woman having the power to set a goal and work hard to attain it. This book has something for everyone. It has female friendships, romance, mystery, history, and adventure. If you are looking for a new historical fiction to try out, look no further than this series! I can’t wait until she publishes the 3rd book!⁣

I can’t wait to chat with Leighellen’s group about this one at the end of the month!

5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣

What’s a book you recommend that has strong female characters?⁣

In this sequel to In Sight of the Mountain we get to return to Seattle and I was so excited to read the next book in the series.
This one has dual narrative and I love following these two.
I again was left wanting more. McGillen has out done herself with this series.
4 stars and I recommend the series.

Jamie you’ve done it again! In Light of the Summit is the perfect sequel to In Sight of the Mountain.

The book jumps right into the action, from page one. The pacing in this novel is incredible and spot on. I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough. I read the first 60% in one sitting, and within 24 hours I had devoured this book. I have always been a fan of short chapters which end in cliffhangers!

I loved getting to know all of the supporting characters and their backstories. As a reader, watching all of the sub plots come together is so satisfying.

In Light of the Summit is absolutely delightful and inspiring!

It is 1890 and Anna Gallagher has her heart and soul set on completing the climb on Mt. Rainier this time. What comes with that are angry townsfolk and a society not ready to accept what a young lady in polite society is set out to do. Besides risking her own name, she also affects their family business, their bookstore from some acts of violence and danger thrown against them.

In an alternating story line, we also learn about Emily Watson, whose life gets turned around in an instant after an unfortunate medical procedure gone awry.

McGillen deftly writes these women’s stories, hardships and struggles and also a satisfying redemption when everyone and everything just seems so set against them. This story is a perfectly painted picture of women’s life in the late 19th century for those that break molds and pave the way for future generations. This was simply stunning!

*Possible spoilers ahead*

After getting so invested in Anna Gallagher’s story in Jamie McGillen’s first novel In Sight of the Mountain, I obviously was really anticipating this sequel to continue Anna’s journey to summit Mount Rainier! I love the time period, the setting and all of the backstories within both novels, but even more so this time around! There were reunions, the coziest winter wedding, tragic deaths, new courtships, threats and ridicule, and so much overcoming of adversity! Did I mention there are bookish references from the time period!? I was here for all of it! Not surprisingly, I was routing for Anna the entire time! There are a couple of great twists towards the end that I definitely didn’t see coming... and maybe caused a slight heart attack for a hot minute! I highly recommend both novels in this series, especially if you are a fan of historical fiction with plenty of adventure and no shortage of girl power!

We meet Anna Gallagher again, in hopes of overcoming past feats and new threats and challenges as she journeys to summit Mount Rainier. In 1890, being a newly married female mountaineer creates quite the stir. But Anna proves determined this time around to reach the top of the beautiful mountain that has always been a beacon of light in her life. There are many changes happening within Anna’s circle in Seattle while she prepares for her summit. It is evident that Anna is strong enough to make her goal a reality, but it’s also the love and support of her family and friends that pushes her to accomplish that final climb and set a glowing example for other women who dream of being mountaineers!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Upon hearing that this book was in the works, I was absolutely enthralled. As an aspiring female mountaineer, knowing that a book that would write about the history of mountaineering for women in the United States and how they have historically had a hard time from other was heartening.
This book continues Anna Gallagher's story from In Sight of the Summit and her continuing endeavor to summit Mt. Rainier in the 19th century.
This book is absolutely breathtaking. The descriptions and character development by McGillen are stunning and there is a sense of mystery and awe that is spread throughout the book.
I found myself tucking the book into my purse in order to get reading done throughout the day when I would be out running my errands.
My best description is that it really reminds me of a more grown up version of the American Girl books - taking on different historical issues that have plagued women throughout the years in a way that is accessible to anyone.
This is a wonderful book for any women, young or old who wants to explore what women are really capable of.

Wow! Another great story about Anna Gallagher! This was a fantastic sequel to In Sight of the Mountain! I HIGHLY recommend reading in Sight of the Mountain before you dive into this novel.

I was hooked from page one and couldn’t wait to catch up with the characters that I enjoyed so much in the first novel. I really enjoyed the supporting characters and their own stories. I love how their lives intertwined with Anna’s so beautifully! If you enjoy historical fiction with strong, adventurous, female characters, you should definitely read this series!!

It was so fun to return to Seattle for this second novel in the Rainier Series! This time around, there is a dual narrative that follows Anna and her friend Emily.

Again we meet up with the spicy Anna Gallagher, this time she is planning another summit but with her husband. Unfortunately, several townspeople (and her father in law) want to keep her in her place. They believe she should be starting a family, not a tour company. So they begin to attack the bookstore owned by her grandfather and where she works.

Emily is also back but her life is not what she expected. After marrying for money, her husband falls ill and she is left with nothing. As she begins to start over, she finds herself once again attracted to her childhood sweetheart, who sadly is courting her boss' daughter.

While the two women are dealing with two entirely different issues, they both suffer from the same problem - the limitations that women during this era have placed upon them.

"You've never quiet understood how badly women have it. I'm a pawn with no power and no rights. But I can take blame and debt, can't I?"

Overall, this book was wonderful. It's a sweet YA historical fiction book set in one of my favorite places during a really interesting time in history. I devoured it far too quickly. My issue with this book is that it was too short! I wanted a little more of everything this time around.

We also only get brief interactions with her Duwamish friend Heather this time. I wanted more of Heather's story. After investing in so much of her in the first book, I really wanted more of the Duwamish people and their transition into society. I would have loved to get more of how she was received in town and even if her child would be allowed to attend school. After talking with Jamie, I'm happy to say that it sounds like we will get more of Heather in a future book.

This was fun to read and fun to discuss with my book club. I love how Jamie adds so many other literature references to the story, which truly makes this book lovers heart sing. I'm thankful Jamie joined us live for a chat and answered all our questions. We look forward to all the next books in this series!

I’m reading this book with the #thereadroversbookclub this month. I read the first book in the series last month and loved it and I couldn’t wait to read In Light of the Summit. In this book Ann and Ben get married and we learn more about Ben’s parents. We also learn more about Anna’s friend Emily. It’s a beautiful ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ historical fiction book. If you like Ann of Green Gables or Little House on the Prairie you will definitely enjoy these books.

Anna Gallagher recently was among the first women to climb Mount Rainier; however, she didn't reach the summit.  Although Anna did find passion,  renewed confidence in herself a man who appreciates her the way she is.  Now, Anna is planning a wedding and a second trip up Rainier where she can hopefully summitt alongside her new husband, Ben. As they prepare for their adventure, someone in Seattle repeatedly attacks Anna's grandfather's bookstore to show their disapproval for Anna endeavors.  Meanwhile, Emily Watson, a long time friend of the Gallagher family is dealing with the death of her husband, a husband that was supposed to give her everything she wanted in life, but left her with his debt.  Emily finds that what she wanted all along might have been right next door all these years.
Picking up right after In Sight of the Mountain, In Light of the Summit continues with Anna and Ben beginning their life together.  After Anna accounts of climbing Rainier are published, an unforeseen incident causes them to think about their next steps.  While the attacks were awful, they unfortunately weren't surprising for the time and I was surprised that so many people were accepting of Anna's adventures.  I did very much enjoy getting to see Anna and Ben preparing for the wedding and building a life together.  Although, this story focused more on her brother Levi and his romantic interests with new widow Emily.  Emily's story is intriguing as she finds out what she really values in life.  She surprises herself when she figures out that money, nice dresses and  high society isn't what fulfills her.  I also enjoyed the historical detail of 1890's Seattle's history with its founder, Henry Yesler and the opening of the Seattle Public Library.  My favorite parts of the story remain when Anna is ascending Mt. Rainier, although Anna and Ben did not begin their climb until about 70% of the way into the story.  As always, the description of the mountain and the view along with Anna's feelings are amazing.  The climb provided for some extremely suspenseful moments that I hope will be resolved in another installment of the Rainier series.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

Full disclosure, I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. And I honestly loved it. I read "In Sight of the Summit" by Jamie McGillen and really enjoyed it last year. When I got my copy of "In Light of the Summit" the second in the series almost a year later I couldn't wait to start reading it. Once I started reading it...right from page 1 it felt like no time had passed. It was as if instantly I was transported right back to my favorite bookshop with a dear friend. I was carried back to the early days of Seattle when Washington was in its early statehood.

I really like the main character. She's someone I'd spend time with in a heartbeat. A strong independent woman who loves books, reading, and Mount Rainier? I'm in! What's not to love about this book? I devoured the book in one go, cover to cover. And no spoilers here but what a plot twist! I didn't see it coming and I'm still smiling about the surprise a day later. What a fun read.

Overall 4 out of 5 stars
Performance 4 out of 5 stars
Story 4 out of 5 stars

Self-discovery. Defiance. Reflection. Understanding. Anna did what no one expected of her. Now life for her is so much different than what it could have been if she would have went the proper young lady route. With this second installment to the series we get to see Emily along with Anna. They both face challenges and changes to their lives. They both find a way to deal with it and move forward. Breaking traditions and making a way has consequences each young woman must tackle. Come in and watch their challenges make them better women.

The second book in the Rainier Series, In Light of the Summit continues to follow Anna's journey as she tries for a second time to summit Mt. Rainier, this time with her new husband. We also get a closer look at the life of Anna's childhood friend Emily, and I have to say, I absolutely LOVED Emily's story. She is such a relatable and well-crafted character.

This time in history was such an exciting but also scary time for women as they started to gain more rights and more public visibility. I think this series does a fantastic job portraying that sentiment. This is the kind of book you love to read cozied up on the couch with a coffee and blanket. The characters are like old friends. It fondly reminds me of a PNW Anne of Green Gables!

Fantastic read! I read this as a stand alone and immediately wondered how I missed the first book in this series! With that said I dove into this book and read in a single day! A truly captivating story about a the struggles that Anna face as a woman and a mountaineer in the 1890s. It was interesting too learning about this as well. This book has dual stories with Anna’s friend Emily’s story entwined made it more enjoyable. I loved seeing them fight through and overcome the negative and hard times while refusing to give into what society thinks is acceptable. A beautiful story I highly recommend to all lovers of history. I look forward to reading more books by this author!

I really enjoyed revisiting the characters and setting of the first book. I was happy to see Anna at such a good place as well as the storylines of side characters. This book is shorter than the first and has less conflict (which can be both a pro and a con). There were some spots I thought could be tightened up with a bit more editing and some smoothing in the transitions with flashbacks. But overall a really engaging and heart warming story of a woman pursuing her dreams and finding the ability to fulfill multiple roles.

I really liked this look at the early mountaineers in Washington state, with a female character who almost summitted Mount Rainer in the previous book, and is preparing for a second attempt with her new husband. There's drama due to people who think a woman mountaineer is unnatural and should be stopped.

I won this in a Goodreads Giveaway and am grateful to the author and publisher for the chance to read about these fascinating characters.

This book is a sweet work of historical fiction for YA readers that gently introduces critical thinking around gender, race, and class within the context of 19th century Seattle. Anna Gallagher, the series' protagonist, aspires to summit Mt. Rainier despite the many obstacles set by the terrain itself—and more importantly, by the provincial attitudes of her contemporaries. The two primary female characters each have a romantic plot line while also providing contrast to one another; in the course of the book, both young women are forced to consider, and reconsider, their deepest values. Love for the natural settings and historical details in and around Seattle is evident all throughout the book; many scenes evoke a strong sense of time and place.

In Light of the Summit is the second installment of the Mount Rainer series by @jamiemcgillen. We are back in the majestic PNW to follow up on Anna's adventures and eventual nuptials to Ben.

This book picks up as Anna and her family are planning her wedding to Ben. Of course she is still living on the high of her almost summit of Mt. Rainer the year before and is determined to summit again, but this time with her future husband. However, not everyone believes the mountain is for a woman and they let her know. Meanwhile, Anna's childhood friend, Emily has to navigate through her own tragedy and loss. This puts everything that she believes she has always wanted into question. This multi-POV edition gives a great portrayal of two friends trying to navigate their lives in 1890s, while trying to live the life they chose, not what is chosen for them.

While this was a delightful read, I still think the first book grabbed me a bit more. However, I did devour this book in one sitting. As in, I sat down at like 8am Saturday morning and was done just after 10am. The next book in the series, In the Heart of the Paradise, is out soon and will be the Rovers Book Club November pick! I can't wait to see how Anna grows with her family while continuing her mountaineering.

The mountains are calling..... and I’m ready to seek them. “In Light of the Summit” picked up straight where we left off in “In Sight of the Mountain”. I’ve been patiently waiting to hear if Anna was finally able to summit the mountain.

In Light of the Summit is so beautifully written. Being a mountaineering woman myself, the author transports you straight to the meadows and prairies with her vivid explanations. I could vision myself at the bottom of the mountain looking up at all it’s glory and light.

I find it fascinating how even though this is a historical fiction novel, the times are still ever changing in the outdoors. I found myself longing for summer so that I can take my turn to ruffle feathers and find adventure.

P.S. Jamie, I don’t think I can wait very long for the third book of the Rainier Series.

In this book, a sequel to In Sight of the Mountain, the author focuses on the friendship of traditional Emily Watson and her adventurous, mountaineering friend Anna Gallagher. A tale of friendship, ambition, and navigating womenhood in the late 19th century. In Light of the Summit is also enjoyable as a standalone book, as enough context and background is given to understand the characters and their history. Great for lovers of historical fiction and Americana.

My review might be an unpopular opinion but here it goes. I understand that times were different back in the day but some of the things mentioned sound so exaggerated and extreme. Like Peter burning the bookstore? Attempting to kill her?? I also didn't like how readers were tricked into thinking Ben's dad was the bad guy when he actually wasn't. Like his views were different because he's older but he didn't take those extremes against his sons wife... Last I didnt like Levi's courtship ending and him starting a new one right away, I feel like even back then that would've been looked down on. Regardless of that I loved how he handled ending the courtship and how he followed his heart.

NOW on to the good things!!
I love that Anna and Ben went to climb the mountain together! I love that they both reached the top regardless of the obstacles. I love that Conner actually went away to have a proper family with June. I love that Emily got to be happy again, and Levi finally got the girl he always wanted. Heather moving into town made my heart happy. (I hope book 3 includes her being accepted by everyone).

After reading In Sight of the Mountain earlier this year, I couldn’t wait to read the sequel. I am so excited to get to be on Jamie’s launch team for this book. This book was just as wonderful as the first. I loved seeing Anna and Ben take on a new adventure together. There love is beautiful and I admire how they stand up for each other. I also love how we saw Emily’s story unfold. With more love, mountain climbing, and a little mystery, this was the perfect sequel. I highly recommend reading In Sight of the Mountain and In Light of the Summit.

.
Inspiring & heart warming, to say the least!.

Can be read as a standalone.

Based in the late 19th century, this story talks about the times when women were supposed to be feminine, graceful, homely bodies with special emphasis on the kindof clothes they should wear.
.
Pointers: a strong minded woman, a family bookstore, childhood dream to reach the summit, friendships, true love, societal ridicule & restrictions, support & love of dear ones. A revolution.
.
This is a story based around 1890 about two friends, Anna & Emily.
.
Anna has a family bookstore, is an avid reader & at the age of 17 wants to reach the summit of Mt. Rainier. She resides with her grandfather & step but kind grandmother. She lost her parents when she was young & her grandfather says, she is as obstinate as her mom😅. I loved their relationship. His grandpa was against her decision to go mountaineering as it was considered a man's arena but later he felt, ppl need to change with time. She has a childhood friend cum lover, Ben who supports her in every way possible. Someone tries to burn down their bookstore twice in an attempt to jeopardize her plans to attain the summit. Even Ben's father displays his disapproval, clearly. Society, at large also keeps on giving their piece of mind to her & her family but nothing shakes her resolve nor his family's support. Ben supports her, they both read books & go mountaineering together which was so beautiful to feel through..
.
"When she was with her grandfather, the world seemed easier to endure." I so missed & relished the memories I had with my grandpa, here.

While the story of Emily keeps on going. She leaves her best friend cum lover & marries someone who is more financially stable & would provide for her & her family needs but as fate would have it, he dies pretty young leaving her with huge debt.
