EMP blasts started the apocalypse during Tom and his family's return flight to San Francisco from Hawaii. Surviving the crash only caused them to confront the chaos of the apocalypse head-on. Their fellow survivors were helpless and lacked the skills to survive. Tom, his sister, and their Grandma survive the perilous trip from San Francisco to their ranch in Southern Oregon using their prepper skills to keep them alive during the anarchy around them.
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
A.J. Newman is the author of over 22 novels that have been published on Amazon. He was born and raised in a small town in the western part of Kentucky. His Dad taught him how to handle guns very early in life, and he and his best friend Mike spent summers shooting .22 rifles and fishing. He read every book he could get his hands on and fell in love with science fiction. He graduated from USI with a degree in Chemistry and made a career working in manufacturing and logistics, but always fancied himself as an author. He served six years in the Army National Guard in an armored unit and spent six years performing every function on M48 and M60 army tanks. This gave him a great respect for our veterans who lay their lives on the line to protect our country and freedoms. He currently resides in Kentucky with his wife Patsy and their three tiny mop dogs, Sammy Cotton and Callie.
While there were some average to decent "prepping" ideas here, there were a lot of editing issues. Punctuation (you field dress a deer not a dear...unless there is a murder going on). The dialogue is stilted and not very realistic. Some parts were rather silly-their flight is in jeopardy, and Bill suggests one of the MC's, Jackie, lead them in some songs, so she gets a flight attendant to do it. The family dynamics of Tom, Jackie and Granny B are curious. Jackie is always telling Tom he is mean to others even when some of them are clearly bad people (e.g. Paul). The three of them are supposed to be close, yet there are clearly a lot of family secrets and emotions that they have chosen to never articulate...until the apocalypse. They seem to spend a lot of time thinking about and talking about sex and actually find people to attach to while fleeing for their lives. Tom ends up with three possibilities and some are unceremoniously removed to make way for his choice. One person is part of a group that kills members of "our" group, yet she gets to stay because her eyes are pretty? One character is running from her drug lord mate who, in spite of an EMP, is able to use a spy that happens to wind up on a nameless ranch in Oregon, to lead him to her (and how did he get there with an EMP destroying so much transportation-oh maybe drug lords keep a lot of pre-1980 cars...yeah). After hearing about a spy, Tom et al just never wonder about that again. Too much unbelievable plot and dialogue for me to continue.
This story supposedly takes place in the future. There is no information about what that future life is like. It immediately goes into an apocalyptic scenario that is just plain silly. A Flight Attendant leading passengers in a sing-a-long apparently to relieve their stress about crashing, as well as other ridiculous events! The main characters reminded me of The Beverly Hillbillies with their use of "ain't" .. "reckon" .. "what in tarnation" and other words and actions. I could go on but read for yourself. You will then know that anyone can write an apocalyptic book.
~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book. ~
Oof. I have loved some of the EMP books I’ve read in the past, but this one is a HUGE miss.
This is a future EMP story, but the lack of worldbuilding gives me little context as to anything about the future. A few hints are when the MC refers to what i assume is covid with “... back in the twenties with that China virus.”. The other context about the changes is: “I’m sure all of you remember the riots in Portland and Seattle last summer. The government executed that anarchist group's leaders after they were found guilty of bombing the federal courthouse. The animals went berserk.” I’m not really sure why it had to be set in the future; perhaps it will become more relevant in future books, but I won’t be reading them.
Our core family in this story hit all the stereotypes: ex-military, a nurse, trained in firearms, physically fit and already living the prepper lifestyle. Don’t forget that our MC also won the lottery recently and therefore, due to him being a prepper, was able to upgrade his stuff and make sure they were more ready for the apocalypse.
The dialogue is also horrible. People just have no subtlety in the story. Real people don’t talk like that to people. They verbalize things in completely unrealistic ways making it very clear who we should root for and who not to root for by making them really black and white. Ah, yes I just love to talk about how I like to murder and rape people because I want to make it clear I’m the bad guy really quickly. The discussions about the abuse and rape the women faced is also just kinda bizzare. Maybe because I spent 10 years working with traumatized youth, but it just didn’t ring true for how these discussions go.
Book is sexist. The women are not well written and the internal dialogue of our MC is gross: “She might be the bitch from Hell, but she was a beautiful bitch and apparently knew she was gorgeous.” “Yes, she is a bitch but perhaps not worthless.” He also refers to some women as bitch out loud.
The story also has near constant attempted rape and sexual assault.
Narration: Hated the voice for Granny B it was grating. I liked this narrator in some of the litrpg he has done, but it didn’t really work for this book.
The story is ok...writing is very immature , characters are somewhat unlikable
I was prepared to like this book, the premise is interesting. However the characters come off as bossy know it all's. Although this book is set in the future the writer didn't use their imagination to create the future. The constant use of slang came off immature and off putting. It was clear to me that the authors favorite word is asshat.
Clumsy writing. Inaccurate terminology (e.g., airliners over the ocean do not lose contact with the “tower”; they do not lose elevation, they lose altitude, etc.) Ham-fisted character development. Prepping insights weren’t. Not worth the time.
This book was okay, definitely better than the average post apocalyptic book as far as having a beginning, middle, and sort of end goes. The characters became a little confusing at times, with most having absolutely no development at all. It seems that the main characters are affected very little, until the end, by so much violence and so many casualties. It just didn’t come across as genuine at all. And as far being prepared, this family had it made. It almost seems like the apocalypse was just an excuse for the family to get into a fight with a drug lord. Need a reason to shoot and kill someone in the book? Wait just a minute - we’ll just make up another killing that we’ll say caused this one. There are two other books in this series, but I think this one may be it for me.
Like all tales of the end of civilization caused by a emp detonation is false. If one would happen it would only effect electronics that are operating. Those machines turned off would be fine,so at least 1/2 the air force would be fine.the army more so. What is going to kill us is disease. Don't believe me? Hey we have just lost 400,000 lives with more to come. Having said all that negative stuff I liked the basic story but I rea!lose it's fiction so I buy the next book in this series.
Sorry but this was not well written. The brother and sister talk like they are children and granny b treats them that way. Meanwhile they are trying to save themselves and others during an apocalypse. The main thing they collect is weapons. This seems to be their main concern as they walk cross country to their underground bunker that is already supplied because of course they just happen to be preppers . Somehow 9 people manage to carry loads of guns- enough to arm a village along with them. This book just seemed unrealistic to me, from the relationship behaviors to the living conditions.
A family of peepers on vacation in a Hawaii return flight survive the EMP tragedy but their plane crashes running out of fuel. The family survived the clash due to their prior planning and luck. They work their way up the California on their way home to discover their planned ranch taken over and burned to the ground. Then next chapter will be in ridding southern Oregon of the crooks and gangs trying to resurrect some of the comforts of civilation
This is another AJ Newman classic series start. I was a bit surprised we got as far as we did ... Some of his other series stop well before this one did I thought some of the themes were familiar, but that’s my fault for reading all his books, and how much can you change the initial premise. If you into his books, and the themes he uses, then you will enjoy this .... Personally I look forward to book 2
There are several good things about this book. Fairly well written. No typos and good sentence structure. May be spoilers!!! The grandmother character added nothing to the story. She tried to pull off a southern accent a few times but then was back speaking well later. I always say that when the author has to start naming all the guns and ammo used then the story is lost
Written by a an who knows absolutely nothing about women. It’s an apocalypse and wow al the women want to date the hero of the story. I think you’ll find that women will be more interested I surviving than they would thinking about dating. The author is living out his fantasy through his book. Good idea, sort of, very badly written. I hate a story when the main characters just happen to win the lottery and just happens to be prepared for everything.
7 pages in and I already think this is going to be a dnf. I'll give it another 10 and if it doesn't get better I'm out. So far, this author has a very bad case of tell rather than let the reader figure it out. Also, stilted dialogue. And Tom recently won 10 million. His share was ONLY 10million. That 'only' might be the nail in the coffin. 3 more pages and I'm out.
I enjoyed the storyline, the characters into bona fide preppers. Their motley crew evolves into a caring unit that helps them survive despite daunting challenges! Waiting anxiously for the next book to find out who the spy is & see what happens to the drug dealer Carlos!
Another reviewer that will state that they know foe a fact that this or any book is a bad read from the first page / chapter is not a truthful reviewer, this book though not a technical novel ìs a goòd read. The characters are well thought out and believable .the mistakes they make are all plausible. Though never to be al classic it is nevertheless worth the read
I loved the premise of this book, the plot was good, but the characters let it down, I thought Tom was a bit naive for a 'prepper' and easily taken in by Sam, Granny B was a much more interesting character. I'll wait for book 2 to see where this series will go. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
Review of A.J. Newman's "Prepper's Apocalypse" Series.
Ever wonder what YOU would do if an EMP struck, leaving you without electricity, food, water, internet, automobile, home or safety?? This series tells it all, from the viewpoint OF a trainec prepper! Want a good read, with scads of ideas on surviving when TSHTF ?? Then this series is for you. Heartily recommend it!
This novel is a good start to a new series, the story line is good and not lots of story lines to keep up with, great character s looking forward to the next book. Thanks for a.great new series.
Can't wait for the next book. Typical Newman adventure and action. Plain writing and usually reflects my own views on life. Recommend for any fan of post apocalyptic fiction.
Brilliant, fast reading, great characters, Hero’s, villains, all surviving, some trying to take over by using power and abuse. from start to finish, your left wanting more.
Well I very .such enjoyed the read ebook forward other next book in the series I hope that e will not be !omg to!l it is published he left us hanging big time thanks for a good read.
If you're looking for a prepping "to do" list, than this is your book. If you're looking for a good story, take a hard pass. The dialogue is cringe from the start. If anyone says "what in tarnation," please kick them.
Lacks plot development- reader gets dumped in the deep end. I was hopeful at first and kept telling myself, just 20 more pages... it’ll get better ...but I had to stop - I just couldn’t pull through it.
Too many cliches. Too many fecal references. Plot twists were good. Character development was sophomoric at times, especially regarding developing relationships. Conversations between characters was often superficial for the situations they were in.
Imagine taking a holiday only to be mid flight and see several explosions. All communication dies. After surviving a plane crash you need to get home. In a time of flight or flight the journey to home is long and fraught
A nice change, a different approach, I enjoyed it very much , I must admit the amount of knowledge about guns surprises me, I guess that's because we hunt with rifles and that's it.
