Alexei and Graysen's story is painful past for both them . He is the sexy hockey guy. She's the shrink at the hospital where he is sent. The minute there eyes meet its a connection that can't ignore. He had demons to get rid of she has a past life she is running from.
I've read a lot of this authors books and before I started doing this review I glanced at previous stars I've given and the vast majority have been pretty good with only the occasional lower grade. Sadly this particular book is the lowest I've ever given. For me this one is a real stinker. I found very little character development and no sizzle between Alexei, the hero and Greyson the heroine.
This is the fifth book in this series about a fictional pro hockey team, the Chicago Blaze. We've already met Alexei in previous books. He's the twin brother of Anton, the hero of first book and a great book by the way. Alexei came across as a player who while filled with talent, was so busy partying and drinking and whoring around, he didn't come close to playing up to his full potential and I got the sense that there was an interesting story there. He played for an opposing team but in this book he's been picked up by the Chicago Blaze because he was dropped by his previous team for DUI and smashing into a barn. He has one chance but he has to go to and complete rehab.
Greysen is the leader of the small group he's out in and it's her job to see he sticks with sobriety. It all sounds like a great set up but the book suffers from the unforgivable sin of being completely and utterly boring. Alexei, in this book, had next to no personality and the only reason I finished the book was because it was so short. Alexei is boring. Greysen is boring. There is next to no storyline and this book is the classic example of telling not showing. Add to that some major plotting errors; one example where Anton and Mia from the first book adopted twin baby girls in this book but in one scene she's breast feeding adopted babies. Huh?? Sloppy plotting.
I also found it very frustrating that just as the author started delving into why Alexei had issues, it was dropped - completely. When he and Anton were just young they were sent to America by their parents and then pretty much abandoned. There has to be a lot of angst there but nope, barely mentioned. The relationship between Anton and Alexei sounds dysfunctional with Alexei feeling the failure of the two but then that's glossed over. What could have been compelling storyline is ignored.
I didn't care for the character, I didn't care for the story and I don't care about the book. Sadly I'm going to be leery going into the next book considering a disappointing disaster I found this one.
I know 1 star may seem overly harsh and in some ways it is. But I know what this author is capable of and it just isn't in this book at all for me.
My advise for fans of this author is to skip this one and instead reread another book by Brenda Rothert.
Alexei knows he has really hit rock bottom and run out of chances when he wakes up in hospital after being in a medically induced coma for 72 hours. He is on the verge of losing everything he has worked so hard for in his NFL hockey career as well as the respect of his brother Anton. His actions could have life changing consequences if he doesn’t do something about his lifestyle now.
He agrees to go to rehab and deal with not just his drinking but the reasons behind his behaviour. He has always felt like he was second fiddle to his perfect brother Anton, he has never felt good enough and it has eaten away at him for too long. He loves his brother but feels cold living in his shadow.
When Graysen walks into his group session as his assigned counselor things are looking up for Alexei. She is beautiful, kind, empathetic and genuinely wants to help him. Alexei uses his good looks and charm as a weapon to try and pull information from Graysen. If he is freely opening up about himself, surely she could at least do the same?
It has been a long time since Alexei has really felt that he had someone on his side, someone who believes in him the way Graysen does. He knows it is genuine and he is sure he can feel a mutual attraction growing between them - it can’t just be one sided.
Graysen prides herself on her professionalism but she has never felt so tempted and attracted to man like she does with Alexei. She has no intention of acting on it but admitting it to herself and him takes the connection between them to a whole new level. When Alexei is released from rehab he makes a promise to not just himself but to Graysen. If he can keep his promise he knows that it will give him the greatest reward, something life changing and a future he never imagined he would have.
This is a beautiful story about love and redemption :)
I think the thing I enjoy the most about the books by this author, is that her characters aren't perfect. They have real problems, and that makes them seem more real, easier to relate to. That's the case with this book, with Alexei and Graysen. To me, I think it makes this a much better book, than the ones whose characters seem so absolutely perfect!
From the outside, Alexei seems to have the perfect life. I mean, he is a player in the NHL. But underneath, he has a problem, even if he can't see it as one. And his problem has caught up with his real life and it's now destroying everything he has worked so hard for. Except, he has one last chance. Even if he doesn't think it will change anything, he is going to try, even if he has to fake his way through.
Graysen is a helper. Her entire life is dedicated to trying to help the lost ones find their way back. She knows that everyone has problems, and it's her job to help them find safe, productive ways of coping, instead of ways that destroy lives. But who helps Graysen? Who makes sure she is taking care of herself and coping with everything that is thrown at her on a daily basis?
This book took what could have been a hopeless situation and made it into a HEA. It took what could have been a bleak end for Alexei, and made it into something he could be proud of. And as amazing as his recovery was, he also found love and happiness, and to me, that was just amazing! This was a book that dealt with some serious topics, but in the end, it was a sweet love story, one that healed a lot of hurts, and mended the bridges broken by addictions! I think the author put a lot into this book, and came out with a definite winner!
Alexei has intrigued me in this series. He is Anton's brother and he very much feels that he lives in his brother's shadow. Anton is the brother that doesn't screw up and mess around whereas Alexei ...is. He messes up one time too many and is made to go to rehab in order to salvage his career. Graysen is his therapist / counsellor. Because of Professional Codes of conduct and ethics these two cannot do much about their attraction to each other until Alexei is out of rehab. This is my least favourite book in the series. I love this author's work - she is a one click author for me. There are lots of great reviews out there and I did enjoy aspects of the book but it isn't one I would pick up and re read. I found it hard to connect with either the Alexei or Graysen and there didn't seem to be the spark between them that is usually to be found in the other books in the series.
Confession time: I have consistently enjoyed Ms Rothert’s Chicago Blaze series, but I wasn’t sure how I felt about Alexei being a hero. I was even less sure about the idea of his therapist being his romantic leading lady.
I should have known better and known to trust Ms Rothert to deliver a thoughtful book that respected Alexei’s journey, Graysen’s role in that journey, and the blossoming relationship between to two.
What I’ve seen of Alexei in previous books, I didn’t really like. The glimpses we saw of his inner thought process as he went through rehab gave us clues as to why. I appreciated the way he committed to the process, worked to repair relationships, and stuck to his guns to be successful. It didn’t take long for me to not only start liking Alexei, but to start respecting him too.
Graysen was a character that I liked and rooted for from the beginning. I liked how she put someone else’s long term success ahead of her own short term desires.
While Alexei was a book I went into with a few concerns, I came out the other side with a warm and fuzzy feeling. A book about a hockey bad boy turned into a book about repairing relationships and forging new paths, setting aside old wounds and creating new bonds. It’s a definite must read.
This one was a little different in that the romance took a bit of a backseat to NHL star Alexei's (Anton's hard drinking brother) journey to getting his life back on course. Despite the romance between Alexei and his therapist (Grayson) not being the main focus of the book, it was still a page-turner for me , an eye-opener, and a story that had me tearing up a time of two. Was the romance believable (and hot)? Absolutely. I just wish there was a bit more of it. Like maybe 50 more pages worth? :) Looking forward to the next book in this series about teammate Easy... 4 1/2 stars
The writing for this wasn't bad, hence the 2 stars, but the pacing was weird and the buildup just led to cheese... Too insta romance for me without a legit foundation!
I wasn’t sure of how to rank this book, but I wish there was more. It’s too short. I wanted more after Alexei graduates from rehab. There was no real climax to speak of. But, it does tell true to life facts about addiction. That’s all I’m going to say. Read Alexei’s story and see how he deals with his alcoholism and the outcome of the romance with Greyson. It will hug your heart...

This was a first time author for us and we have to say that our first time read by them was quite enjoyable.
We enjoyed the story it was heart felt and engaging and had character's that were all flawed. This story had a serious under- tone and had it's character's living with some sort of addiction some owning it and others others refusing to face their reality just yet.
Alexei was one of those cocky bad boys that never thought about much more than his next party and next willing women until a little slip of a women made him start questioning his life and his life choices. I have to say we really loved Alexei from the moment we met him a new he was going to be one of those characters that would have us smiling throughout the story.
Graysen was one of those character's that was down right love-able who truly cared about helping others and truly care about all her patients even the difficult ones.We found her sweet kind and loved how her own families dysfunction lead her to helping others.
Overall we enjoyed the story with these flawed characters and how they worked so hard to atone for the mistakes that they made some learning to live with them and others moving forward .We loved seeing the unlikely relationships & friendships forged. We also enjoyed that the story had a complicated love interest that lead to one party finding their soul mate. I loved the unusual courtship that went on between Graysen and Alexei as it was kind of sweet and different and we loved that.
Final thoughts are that we loved that love was found in one of the most unlikely place.
This story was both romantic as well as moving. Alexei is the rebellious partying brother of our Chicago Blaze team captain Anton. Alexei lives life on the edge and parties as if there is no tomorrow. His athletic ability has come too easily for him and now he is about to pay the piper. Graysen is a therapist at the rehab center where Alexei is sent to complete a sobriety program as well physical therapy so that he may come clean and earn the right to play on his brother's team. No one knew that the real work was about to begin both physically and emotionally and it included an attraction that they both needed to fight in order for Alexei to achieve his goals. The road to conquering addiction is not easy and it touches the lives of all those involved not just that of the addict. I will warn you this story can be raw at times but addiction in any form is a long hard struggle, fought daily, and sadly not all can bare the cross alone nor forever. Brenda Rothert will bring you to the brink and then bring you back to a place of warmth and love and more importantly understanding and acceptance.
I enjoyed the storyline, it's well written, entertaining from start to end and I found myself turning the pages late into the night.
I loved watching Alexei and Graysen come together, I enjoyed their relationship and I respected the way they were able to work through past hurts and support each other to a healthier mind space. These two belonged together, I was very happy they got their happily ever after.
Alexei is a wonderful addition to the Chicago Blaze series, each book can be read as a standalone and I highly recommend them all!
Felt very insubstantial. The romance was perfunctory. The hero's issues felt glossed over. The entire pace of the book felt fast forwarded. Overall this is pretty forgettable.
Alexei has always had a reputation of being the life of the party and enjoying women and alcohol to the excesses but he has always refused to acknowledge that while in the beginning it may have been a choice it is now a necessity. When his latest escape finds him about to lose the hockey career he values about all else he agrees to go into rehab just to please others but his counselor is not about to let that happen.
Graysen is a woman who is determined to use her past to help other. She is drawn to Alexei in a way she has never felt before but getting involved with him personally could mean the end of her career. She is determined to deal with what is causing his behavior and not just the behavior that is the result but when it is time for him to leave will it be a beginning for both of them or the end?
This is a sweet and sexy story about love, healing and second chances. I liked that both Graysen and Alexei realized what was truly important and had to come first and if they were meant to be then it would happen the right way.
Alexei by Brenda Rothert was emotional, touching and deals with some tough issues but the author does a great job weaving Alexei and Graysen’s story around them. On the surface, Alexei has it all. An NHL player with everything at his fingertips. But life is never as it seems and Alexei needs to turn his life around if he wants to keep playing hockey. Enter Greysen.
Graysen sees Alexei in ways he does not even see. She wants to help him, but he needs to want to help himself as well. I loved how patient and caring Graysen was. It may have taken a bit for Alexei to see the changes he needed to make, but once he does, he is all in. I loved the chemistry they shared, even when they tried to fight it. Alexei by Brenda Rothert was a bit angsty, full of so many emotions and heart-warming.
Read and reviewed for Sultry Sirens Book Blog. Happy reading!
Alexei is book 5 in the Chicago Blaze series, while this story is in a series this book can be read as a standalone.
Alexei has made some bad choices but always thought he was in control, when he winds up in hospital, he has 2 options; Retire or head off to rehab. Alexei is going through the motions because this is what has been asked of him, he is in denial until he isn’t. When he finally comes to terms with how he has been living his life he opens new doors including one to his heart.
I personally loved this book; I have been a fan of this series from the beginning and the moment Alexei hit my kindle I blocked out my day and read in 1 sitting. I cannot wait to read book 6 Easy, we got a small glimpse of him, but he is mostly still a mystery.
I always get that giddy feeling when I see start a new Chicago Blaze story and with Alexei, there was a frisson of excitement to see how this bad boy and self-imposed black sheep of the family would fall into the fold of the Blaze.
Alexei has hit the proverbial rock bottom, without even knowing he needed to. He's confronted with the fact that out of a job unless he gets clean. He certain he's not really an addict, he just likes to party. It's only in getting clean that he can look back and see how his actions indicate there was something driving him to drink. Therapy is the best thing that could have happened to him, and meeting Greyson, his in treatment therapist, allows him to see things much more clearly and provides the opportunity to fall in love.
I loved this story for both the honest portrait of addiction and recovery, and of two people so unaware they found their person in each other. Rothert handles the scenario by injecting the story with a "forbidden" aspect as Greyson is forced to deny her attraction to her patient. But Alexei will have none of that, he's feeling something he's never felt before and he's not convinced that his recovery is jeopardized by a relationship and their connection is beyond simple attraction. In fact, who could be better for him?
There's a bit of drama in the therapy group, but there's also incredible friendships formed as well. One thing I loved is that they were perfectly balanced to provide each other with clarity and what the other person needed. I just really liked both characters. I thought they were immensely likable and deserved happiness. Both characters experience personal growth and their togetherness made me happy.
It's a long circuitous path for Alexei, but the second line of the Chicago Blaze just got an injection of pure heart. He ends up right where he belonged, closer to his family and in love with life. And Greyson finds a man who provides her the much needed emotional support and protection, and membership in a family that deserves her loyalty and love. 5 Stars and recommendation!!
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
In this book we get to see Anton’s brother Alexei. Alexei has been broken for awhile. He continues to party hard and doesn’t care who he will hurt as long as his pain will go away. So when he wakes up in the hospital with broken bones and given a ultimatum to give up playing pro hockey or go to rehab he needs to think fast. He soon realizes that it ain’t a walk in the park but meets someone who feels he can talk to. Grayson is a doctor who is also flawed and finds herself attracted to a patient which is not allowed. Can she help this hard group graduate and stay sober. Can Alexei stay on the right path or will his inner demons take over. This is a very realistic and strong story. Highly recommend even to those who do not like sports romances
Alexei lost control of his car, his blood alcohol registered three times the legal limit. Awakening from a medically induced coma, he’s disoriented.
He blacked out damaging a barn and dislocating his hip, his resuming a spot playing hockey is contingent on sobriety.
Graysen is twenty-nine, a sociology major hoping to change the world one patient at a time working on their pain and addiction. An experience she personally understands. Pain and shame.
I’d be much better off if I’d dislocated my shoulder instead of my hip. The possibility of arthritis in my hip hitting home about forty years too early. Not to mention that I’m seriously concerned about whether I’ll ever be able to properly f**k a woman again.
“I’m Dr. Graysen Wells, and I’m your group leader. In this session, the four of you are my only patients. Six days a week, you’ll do individual and group sessions with me. Today we’re going to just get to know each other a little bit. You have just been through a long intake session about the rules and expectations here, but I find it best to go over my own expectations.” I put on a mask of serious concern, trying to convey that if she wants me to share my feelings and weep into tissues, I’m here for it.
Dr. Graysen’s tone is warm as she delivers this verbal blow, but I still don’t like it. I have to convince her I’m seeing the light, but it’s hard for me to pretend I’m some out of control alcoholic. “I guess it has. But wasn’t it mostly just poor judgment? If I had called an Uber, none of this would have happened.” “Do you think maybe your judgment isn’t as sound when you’re drinking?” I grunt in response, tired of this charade. She continues. “You’re not alone—that’s the case for most people.” I smile flirtatiously. She softly exhales through her nose, as if she’s counting to ten in her head. She’s aggravated with my attempts to disarm
I’m gonna have to be a little more subtle with my seduction of her, but I don’t mind. Flirting with Graysen is no chore, even if she is shutting me down. We’re clearly incompatible, but I can’t deny she’s attractive, in a sexy librarian kind of way. I’ve got time, though. Thanks to my f-g hip, I’m in no shape for hockey yet. I’ll keep attending my therapy sessions, including the physical rehab that starts soon. I just nod as I walk out, because clearly she’s not in the mood for a wink. Graysen’s a mystery I’m going to have to unravel. If she’s got a man, charming my way to a quick graduation from rehab is gonna be harder than I thought.
Alexei’s moment of clarity. Grayson’s words from one of their sessions ring in his ears. ‘You wouldn’t be here if drinking was a choice you made just to have fun. It’s not a choice anymore—you have a physical and mental addiction to it’, she’s right. I may be sitting on a couch, but inside, I’m climbing the walls, jonesing for a release that I could put my fist through a wall. And it’s not just booze. I use sex the same way. The realization makes me look at the empty doorway and pray for Graysen to walk through it. I don’t know what to do with this newfound information, and I need her advice. Christ, am I an alcoholic? I think…I am.
She is on a date imagining the worst “Hey, I’m Jake and I love kids, dogs and hiking. Check out my attractive photos and by the way, let’s get together so you can find out my real name’s Jeffrey Dahmer and I want to wear your skin after I cut it from your dead body.”
This is about mental health, therapy, medications, and other forms of treatment in a positive light that might help others want to take the step towards overcoming their own addictions. It’s an arduous road to trust, acceptance and recovery.
He respects her conditions of dating him if his sobriety exceeds the stipulated nine months to see her socially.
5 star Review Alexei (Chicago Blaze #5) by Brenda Rothert
Although this is the fifth book in the series, it is a stand alone and it is not necessary to have read the previous books. However, do yourselves a favour if you haven’t read them and one click.
Alexei is so swoon worthy, perhaps because there is so much more to him than just being a bad boy hockey player. His strength and determination in overcoming his self inflicted injuries as well as his addiction was inspiring.
I freely admit to numerous snort worthy, laugh out moments whilst reading and I was riveted from the first to the last page.
Brenda Rothert has written a story that you cannot help but become invested in. There were times I laughed and times I cried and on a few occasions I wanted to scream in frustration. However through our it all there was a feeling of hope, strength, and determination in facing down situations that might well knock others out.
This is at times an emotional roller coaster of a read as Alexei and his group at the Rehab centre for substance abuse, are forced to face the harsh realities of their addiction.
Dr. Graysen Wells was the perfect heroine for Alexei, her kind, compassionate and beautiful heart was exactly what he needed and deserved; not to mention her tough love.
Initially Alexei expects to sail through his rehab, just planning to tell his therapist what she wants to hear, but Graysen really challenges him to look deep inside and what he finds certainly opens his eyes to a lot of emotions. It also surprisingly opens his heart to a possible relationship.
Graysen knows the smart thing to do would be to keep things professional and yet she has a hard time ignoring the feelings that Alexei beings to the surface.
Ms. Rothert has written a story that is thought provoking and challenges us as readers. It was extremely well written and she certainly tackled the issues of addiction and rehab with dignity. I cannot wait for the next book in the Chicago Blaze series.
Alexei is book 5 in the Chicago Blaze Series but it can certainly be read as a stand-alone and its a must read for all lovers of hockey romance as well as romance lovers. Brenda Rothert has given us an emotional roller coaster that will make you smile, have you shearing a tear and at times have you screaming at your e-reader. Alexei is a beautifully written love story that touched me on so many levels, I was captivated by Alexei and his group at the rehab centre and I found myself hoping and praying for the right outcome as this group becomes friends while fighting their own demons and addictions, my heart broke for every single one of them. Alexei is a bad boy hockey player who has been told get yourself straightened out or walk away from the game and it’s Dr Graysen Wells who comes to his rescue by her straight talking and telling him as it is not what he wants to hear, she is beautiful, caring and compassionate and just what he needs but lines will have to be crossed for this couple to get their HEA and will she be prepared to risk her career for feelings she can’t hide for much longer..... This book may take us to some dark places with rehab and addictions but it’s also a wonderful love story and as I got to know Alexei I really connected with him and the reasons for his struggles. This is a great addition to a great series and I highly recommend you read not only this book but the rest of the series as well. Can’t wait to see where this very talented author takes us next .
Alexei is probably one the most serious themes tackled in the Blazes series dealing with addiction and alcoholics. If you've followed along we know Alexei is Anton's brother. He's been an excessive partier and drinker always in trouble. This time he hit rock bottom he crashed into a barn was in a coma and hurt himself. His team released him and the owner of the Chicago Blaze gave him a second chance if he completes rehab and gets back in shape plus stays sober. I have to note Alexei's kinda looks like Tyler Seguin from the descriptions here which was amusing.
Greysen is Alexei's therapist and while there was some attraction earlly on I'm glad she stuck to her ethics. She really helped Alexei I would day confront issues and why he drank. It took a lot to keep going strong and stay true. These two had a slow burn which worked well since patient and therapist rules. I'm happy that even with acknowledgement of feelings and all that they kept it about recovery. They stuck to the timeline too about relationships after completing rehab. So refreshing.
Aside from all that seriousness it the hockey team is a great bunch like always. Supportive. Alexei grew a lot in this book it was so nice to see. Addiction is complex and all that no every story ends well. Brenda Rothert mixed hockey and that in a good way. I actually liked Greysen and Alexei they worked well together even outside therapy. They got each other too imperfect. I'm excited to see Easy's story next.
This story was both romantic as well as moving. Alexei is the rebellious partying brother of our Chicago Blaze team captain Anton. 3.5⭐️ - Der 5te teil, also dieser ist mein erstes Buch aus der Reihe
- Sucht Therapeutin x süchtiger Hockey Spieler Trope
I wasn't sure I would like this one, not sure that Alexei wouldn't come off as being forced into rehab and petulant, like a toddler. While it might have been that at first, he seemed to really change the longer he was at rehab, wanting more out of his life. I liked the friendships he made with the others he was there with, hated how some of those relationships turned out, but life as an addict is a hard one.
I also wasn't sure about the relationship between Alexei and Graysen. What really worked for me was that they didn't cross any lines while in rehab. They talked about things and if they were attracted to each other, but Graysen really wanted Alexei to stay sober for himself not her. I also like that they didn't jump into a relationship right when he got out, it was slow and steady, which worked.
I loved how this one ended, it was perfect for Alexei and Graysen.
On a side note...the team trip to the Chinese buffet was so great! 😂🤣
This one is a different romance story from your typical man meets woman. These two meet as patient and doctor. But they don’t technically start a physical relationship until months later. The emotional relationship start date is a bit fuzzy. You make the call.
Alexei and Graysen are perfect for each other. Alexei ends up in rehab and does a 180 with his life. For the better. He respects her when she draws a line in the sand. These two are a very supportive unit. Oh and the scenes with Anton and his family - I loved them!
I really enjoyed this one. My one complaint - no epilogue. I need something Brenda!!!
Possible triggers - This story does deal with an alcoholic overcoming his addiction. These are mentions of alcohol killing someone and someone relapsing.
P.S. Fruit salad!!!! Ha ha ha!!! (You’ll understand when you read this one.)
I love this Chicago Blaze series. Alexei and Anton are twins from Russia. Alexei has always been the bad boy and getting into trouble. When he gets himself into some real trouble, he has to go to rehab. This is where he meets his therapist, Graysen. I wasn’t crazy about Alexei in past books, but I was glad to see another side to him in this book. I have always heard that many people have to hit rock bottom before they get help. Alexei hit his bottom and found some truths about himself he never realized. Graysen is such a good therapist and knows how to bring people to talk about their demons. I was surprised about Graysen’s background and how she became a therapist. I feel bad for the people who do t make it and don’t want to change.
There is an especially funny part in this book with the hockey team. I was laughing out loud just imagining it! This is a good book that I strongly encourage you to read. I was given a copy of the book and voluntarily wrote a review.
I feel like I struggle with what to write about with Brenda Rothert’s stories because I seriously love every one of them that I have read! In this slow burn book, she takes two main characters from the story that have childhood struggles that follows them into adulthood. Their life experiences makes them the perfect match for each other and sets a great story line. One of my favorite scenes from the book is when Alexei describes one of the dreams he had to Graysen. I won’t divulge details so you can experience it yourself!
