How can Megan and Tom create the perfect life together, when their dreams risk tearing their family apart? Making the Best of It is the sequel to Goes Without Saying. If you like heart-warming, insightful tales with relatable characters and plenty of witty humour, you’ll love this latest novel in Luisa A Jones’s page-turning contemporary women’s fiction series.
Making The Best of It (Dreams of Field Book 2) by Luisa A. Jones ‘Making the Best of It’ is the sequel to ‘Goes Without Saying’ and it continues Tom and his wife Megan’s story. However, it could be read as a standalone story but the reader will understand the couples backstory better if they have read the previous book. I thoroughly enjoyed both books and was pleased to be back with Tom Field and Megan, and of course Greta, the camper van! This novel is a wonderfully written enjoyable and engaging read with a touching and uplifting storyline. I was hooked from page one and could not put this book down. I loved the characters, both Tom and Megan are likeable, realistic and relatable and the author has a way of making the characters come to life which made me feel more invested in their story. Tom is basically, making the best of things but he is at breaking point as all his responsibilities have gotten in the way of his dreams of leaving the city and moving nearer to the sea. Both Megan and Tom are grief-stricken following a disaster and whilst this makes Tom feel that he can’t keep putting his life on hold any longer he is aware that it could cost him his family and destroy his marriage. Meanwhile, Megan is desperate to find her father who she previously did not want in her life, before it’s too late to get answers to her questions. However, Megan’s need to find her father has left her mother and sister feeling betrayed and Toms pipe dream of abandoning the city that she actually loves threatens to turn her world upside down completely. The question is can Megan and Tom create a perfect and happy life together despite their differing dreams which could split the family apart. This is a page turning, heartwarming and insightful novel about families and marriage. It has plenty of drama and the narrative flows well making it an easy read and I enjoyed the witty humour in it making the story more lighthearted. I definitely recommend this novel.
I was so excited to hear there was a sequel to Goes Without Saying. I loved the first book and was intrigued to find out how Tom and Megan (and of course, Greta) were getting on. Tom is having doubts about his work / life balance and then a terrible tragedy makes him even more determined to change his story. Megan is happy and settled and has no desire to uproot the family. She does however become fixated on her absent father and imagining what her perfect extended family will be like. There are laughs, tears, lots of drama and totally realistic, that’s what makes this such a good read. It is genuinely warm and the characters are so relatable that you could imagine yourself in their situation. The wonderful writing and humour keep you hooked throughout and I didn’t want it to end. I now want to move to rural Wales and love by the sea. Thank you Luisa A Jones for another great book.

Wonderful characters with depth and totally relatable flaws. Totally recommend this series. Thanks Luisa, I look forward to the next chapter in Tom and Megan’s story.
Making the best of it by Luisa A Jones. Fields of dreams book 2. Tom Field is at breaking point. He’s been making the best of things, letting his responsibilities get in the way of his dreams. How can Megan and Tom create the perfect life together, when their dreams risk tearing their family apart? Omg another brilliant read of loss family arguments and joy. I really enjoyed this book. I loved Megan and Tom. Wasn't sure how I felt about her dad. I didn't trust him. Olwen who I didn't like I grew to like. I do hope there is more to come. 5*.
Making The Best Of It (Dreams of Field Book 2) by Loisa A. Jones The continuation of the story of Megan and Tom Field from the first book 'Goes Without Saying'. Tom is making the best of things, but his obligations are getting in the way of his hopes and dreams. Megan didn't think she needed her father in her life, but she wants answers to the questions she's has kept locked inside. Sadly her search opens old scars for her mother and sister. I want to thank TBC for a free copy of this book to review.
The adventures of Tom and Megan continue, with appearances of Greta, the camper van. I feel like the characters properly came to life in this sequel. Families are complicated entities and everyone has their own viewpoints. A delightful exploration of people with their ups and downs.
Loved the adventures of Tom and Megan. Loved goes without saying and thoroughly enjoyed book 2. Glad I read goes without saying first as you get to meet Tom and Megan and book 2 follows them but you could read making the best of it as a stand alone.
Having just read the previous book I was wondering where the story about Megan and Tom could go next. Another brilliant book. Complex relationships described so well. Couldn’t wait to get to the end to find out how it would end. Is there another book coming. Will be interesting to see what happens next. Thank you
This is the second book in the series and continues following Tom and his journey. Luisa has written another thought provoking read, characters are well developed and relatable to. A perfect cosy read Thank you
A follow up from Goes Without Saying, this follows Megan and Tom a couple of years on from the events of the previous book. This time, both of them face a family crisis - in some ways similar, but in others very different. Both sides are again told sympathetically, and the story is ultimately satisfying, although I did find that the story at times skipped sections - maybe I was too invested in Greta! Well worth the read, and all the characters are very well drawn.
This is the second in the series and was well written. I was curious to see what happened to the characters of the first book.A very good cosy read with a dash of humor
Another great read which deals with the effects of bereavement, work life balance and the pressures of family life in an engaging and realistic way. The story is told with humour and warmth but there is also a clear message about the fragility of all relationships and how much commitment and effort they take. I hope there will be a third book about Megan and Tom!
For me the sign of a good read is when you close the final page you feel bereft, you are losing contact with characters you have grown close to, invested time with and you want to know what happens next. This is how I felt about Tom and Megan. "Making the Best of It" is the sequel to "Goes Without Saying", so I already knew them and was eager to read more. I found the story and characters well rounded and fleshed out. I am not a man in my early forties but I found Tom a very believable, recognisable figure, his responses to a family tragedy rang true. This time round Megan's impulsive and emotional nature comes to the fore, having consequences for all around her. Megan's need for stability clashes with her desire for the truth and a sense of belonging. Greta the VW camper van has her own subplot after her dramatic role in "Goes without saying". Luisa A Jones has a promising writing career ahead.
Really loved this second book written by Luisa the small Welsh touches makes the story feel close to home. It's a tale of family, friendships, love and heartache. These two books explore the lengths people choose to go to when they love one another, embracing the rough times along with the smoothe. Really enjoyed and would recommend!
