On the day that set everything into motion by altering the course of their life ...

I am not a fan of prequels being long prologues, with issues resolved in an other book, especially about a book I have not read yet, but I have read some bonus stories set after Inferno, and while they were not the resolved story, they gave some nice and lovely insights of the journey Con and Rhi had to accomplish before their well deserved HEA.
So this novella is set on the day everything went down for the couple and a third party who found herself unexpectedly involved. It is heartbreaking from Con and Rhi’s POV, and much sad for Erith as she got herself involuntarily trapped in an inextricable tragic situation for having simply trying to help.
A sorrowful tale which will definitely bring you to jump straight in Inferno if you had not already read it.

Told from 3 povs-Rhi, Con, and Erith’s-Of Fire and Flame explores Rhi and Con’s breakup and subsequent consequence of decisions made in haste, even when with good intent.

While answering a a couple of questions I had regarding events in Inferno and tying events in to the various books timeline, I’m now left with more questions, but in the best way possible! Like the last two novellas, the emotions poured of the page, and pulled me in. I would love to delve in to more detail but if you haven’t read Inferno, I don’t want to spoil anything! This short read is not a stand alone and I think it would benefit to read Inferno before tackling this short story. Think of this as a companion piece to the surprising events revealed in Inferno.

I received an advance reader copy from the author. This is my honest review.

If you're wondering about the break-up of Rhi and Con this will fill you in. Plus there's Death intervention with the twins. There was no romance just a lot of history plus we still don't know how Death got the twins from here to where we see them in Dragon Revealed

This is one of the hardest reviews I have written. Donna Grant is a fabulous author and one of my favorites. Her Dark World is one that I have delved deep into, trying to find the mystery of Rhi’s Dragon King. With that puzzle solved, we come to the end of the Dark Kings series and the beginning of the Dragon King series. This book spans the two.
The book is well written, like all DG books. This book only gets 3 stars from me, because of the sheer number of inconsistencies. It rewrites the history of Rhi and Con’s break up, clues that some dug deep for. Do these errors/rewrites take away from the bigger picture? For that I am hesitant to decide. Can I recommend this? Depends on how you feel about the details. Can you see past trees to find the forest? Do a few altered trees change the forest? Only time will tell.
I received an ARC of this novella for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

A prequel to the series. Told in three parts from the perspective of Rhi, Con and Erith during the time when Con and Rhi broke up.

After the beautiful story told inHeart of Gold, I was really disappointed with this book. It didn’t make me cry or make me feel anything the way Heart of Gold did and there were huge plot holes and inconsistencies with the timeline and overall plot of the series in part three (Erith’s part). I couldn’t enjoy the story because I couldn’t stop thinking about the inconsistencies.

I gave this book 3 stars because it made me see Con differently. That he is not an emotionally bankrupt jerk. I am 100% team Con now.

Series: Dark Kings #18.7
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

This novella is basically the missing scene of Con and Rhi’s breakup. It's told from Con, Rhi and Deaths POV so you get a sense of how everyone reacted, and how their feelings and thoughts impacted everything.

I have mixed feelings about this novella. So I should probably say that I have never been a fan of the Rhi and Con relationship. I did like their book, but I never imagined them as a couple while reading this series over the past few years. While this little novella is a nice little addition to have, I don’t think it was necessary for the series, especially since it does change events that happened in previous books.

Also, I still feel Con was being ridiculous in pushing Rhi away. He does it for the other kings but you know they would have kicked his ass if they knew that was the reason for it. They would have seen how stupid it was and stopped him from ruining their relationship, even if they were jealous of their happiness. They still would have supported their relationship and pushed him to be happy.

I think in the end, while it was nice of her to write this missing part of their story, I don’t think it was necessary. So this novella just gets three stars from me because while it is good for what it is, I don’t think it brought anything new to the series.

This is a very short peek into what happened shortly after Con had ended his relationship with Rhi. And he didn't even do it himself. He had sent Darius to do the dirty deed.

This story is told first from Rhi's perspective, then Con's, and finally Erith's. It doesn’t really add a lot to the overall story. It does give the reader some insight into Rhi's actions and her feelings. I felt very strongly with her, and I have to admit, at this point I didn't really care so much about Con's heartbreak. It was his decision, after all, that had brought them to this point. Erith's chapter added some extra information, most notingly about the twins.

It's probably not necessary to read this to stay in touch with the world as a whole, but it is useful in providing some background and motivations for what had happened. It is highly emotional.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am going to address the issue when it comes to this book first, because I want my review to be honest. If you remember every detail of every Dark World/Dark King book, you may have an issue with this one. Are there some inconsistencies? Yes. Honestly this doesn’t bother me as much as it does some people. There might be something that was in one book that isn’t in this one, or the timeline might be off. If you take Of Fire and Flame as it’s own story you will enjoy it. I sure did. Of Fire and Flame is about a moment in time. It follows Con, Rhi and even Erith following Con ending his relationship with Rhi. As bad as it is I loved watching Con’s heartbreak. For so long he was the stoic leader, in this story you see his pain. Rhi will always be on of my favorite characters so getting to go through the event through her eyes was a real treat. Now since I am being totally honest, I was very mad at Erith after Inferno… I am still pretty mad at her for what she did, but this gave insight that lessened my anger towards her some.

There's very little new here that wasn't previously covered (or hinted at) in other novels or novellas. Yes, there are more details about when Con broke up with Rhi and how miserable they both were. Then there's Erith and the twins. Ultimately, it brings to the forefront details of how Erith, Con, and Rhi are connected to each other. Too short and somewhat disappointing.

This author recently released a novella titled Heard of Gold which gave us insight into the Con & Rhi's relationship, and I loved it! In Ms. Grant's newest novella we are taken back in time even more - we will see how it all started from perspectives that we didn't know about - Rhi, Con, and Erith's way. It will tie some past doubts, but not only that 0 it will give us some answers, but not only that! I was left with some more questions than I even thought about! It was a great addition to the overall story!

This book is a prequel.

Have you ever wondered what happened between Con and Rhi? Why were the twins not born and raised with either Rhi or Con? How did Erith become involved with the couple and how did she know where the twins were?

Well, this book answers those questions and a few more. It may be a short novella but it packs quite a punch. I believe that it will also help propel us into the newest saga about the Dragon Kings.

This was an interesting take on 3 different point of views, however, I don't feel like I really learned much more than I already knew from the series. I recommend it because anyone who likes Donna and likes the series, should still read it. Everyone seems to get different things from books, so don't rely on my review too much.

When I first heard DG was releasing this book I had my doubts about it. Don't get me wrong I love her books. Since the series ended I was satisfied with how Con and Rhi's story was explained. In my opinion this book just wasn't needed. I do understand she wanted to explain their story and why choices were made. This book is from three points of view, Rhi, Constantine and Death. One of my problems was that there were some inconsistencies and that made it hard to read. Several times I went back and looked up the information to see if I was wrong.
Donna Grant writes great stories and has great characters that makes you hate and love them at the same time.

This book is well written as always and the characters are awesome but with the writing of Heart of Gold this book left me disappointed. Would I recommend it? Not sure with the inconsistencies probably not. But I will end with this, I DO love her books.

A triad of despair

Three sides of a bad situation told by Rhi, Con, and Death. Each in untenable positions. Each making the best decisions possible for their side of the same situation that put them on divergent, heartbreaking paths.

This title, Of Fire and Flame, along with the last novella Heart of Gold are novellas set in the world of The Dragon Kings. They are designed to give us the back stories of the main characters in the series. I am not a fan of these novellas, especially as they are just backstories with no plot. I would have preferred to have the backstories within the context of the novels themselves. Now I understand that authors may not have all the ideas at the time of the novel. I get it that characters sometimes reveal these tidbits at a later date. If they are important to the ongoing plot lines, I would prefer to have them be part of the next novels. They can be flashbacks or segments revealed through another character, but as stand-alone books, they are unfulfilling. It’s nice to know some of the backstories, but they feel disjointed and lack a plot line.

Donna Grant has granted us the greatest of gifts as she continues to give us these short stories of the lives that our favorite couple led in the millennia they were apart. This story is actually three distinct stories from the POV of three characters we have all fallen in love with over the years and we get a lot more understanding of what led these three down the path they lived. While the story isn’t distinct and certainly can’t stand alone I consider it to be a continuing epic epilogue that just gives us more and more greatness. Each POV gives us the story of a single day and how it changed so much in the lives of these three and the hundreds of characters that depend on them. Rhi’s story began with her getting her teeth kicked in when she is told she is no longer wanted by the man she thought was to be her forever mate and how her life devolved from there. Con’s view is the consequences of his decision to push Rhi away and all the danger and loss that came after that. But the surprising third character was Erith, aka Death, and how she affected these lives, even inadvertently, as she did what she thought was the best for everyone. I loved learning more about this time in their lives and learning a bit more about how and why Erith was forced to keep the existence of the twins from Rhi and Con for so long. We also got hints of why they are still fighting rejoining their parents and how powerful they have been from the beginning. I am looking forward to seeing more of their story, not just in these continuing epilogues, but in the new series by Donna (Dragon Kings) and the continuing Reapers series as well. Ms. Grant is one of my favorite authors and she truly understands what makes her readers love her stories and gives us what we want, while sticking to her own style every moment. Pure magick, Donna, and we are dying for more.

This is a novella in the Dark Kings world, and it absolutely must be read in the order of the series or you will not understand what is happening, and there are also spoilers for events in previous books. With that being said, we see the point of view for Rhi, Con, and Death in this novella. I don't want to say a whole lot because, as I said, they would be a spoiler for previous books. And I definitely don't want to ruin anything for anyone still reading the series for the first time. What I will say, each person's POV is set up like their own mini book in this novella. And the first two completely broke my heart. Especially the first one. I read about what happened and knowing the reasoning and emotions involved? It's absolutely heart breaking. Death's POV showed exactly how much heart she really has, and the things that she will try to do to help not only the people she cares about but the world in general. I, personally, loved it. I loved getting their feelings and thoughts. I loved getting Con's thoughts on his decision, and knowing exactly how that truly affected him. And while some things didn't match perfectly with previous books, I am not one to take a book apart and kill it for something like that. There are a lot of books and stories involved, and I am going to be honest. I really didn't even notice them because I was so involved with the story and the emotions involved. I just read the book and remembered exactly why I love this author (and the series she creates) so much.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS: We finally know. Donna Grant’s latest release, “Of Fire and Flame” opens new, in depth insight into the time that Constantine and Rhi spent separated. Previously in Grant’s “Heart of Gold” for Valentine’s Day, we were given a closer look into the deep and passionate love that Con and Rhi share. We saw in Con’s own words, as Rhi read his journal(s) of those time. His passion and eternal love for his mate; his shattered heart as he sent Rhi away to save the Dragon Kings. In the last few book releases, we learned, through the memories of Con and Rhi, of their mutual heartbreak when Con sent Rhi away – and the ecstasy when she returned – about the crushing news that there were children, twins, products of their union that Erith took from Rhi during that dark time to save both the children’s and Rhi’s lives.

“Of Fire and Flame” is a first person dive into the naked emotional pain and suffering that both Rhi and Con experienced when first separated. Grant’s passion for her characters can be heard and felt, taken down to the bare bones, as the reader experiences the wrenching emotion and devastation both Con and Rhi experience(d). The reader is also gifted with deep insights into the goddess Erith and her role during this time as she secretly watched both Con and Rhi from afar, and then so much closer. Most revealing is how Erith decided to save Rhi and the unborn twins. While the raw pain and heartbreak of both Con and Rhi are difficult to experience, the reader can comfort themselves knowing that this is in the past. Holding on to that knowledge affords the feeling of a safe and warm place to be after one experiences the emotional desolation and loss of both Con and Rhi during those darkest times.

It is always exciting to be able to gather these insights into events that are only discussed briefly in other books. It seems like this is an important link into finding out more about some of the characters and their origins, especially how the twins came to be. It is a necessary read that will open up other doors into the world of Con and Rhi as they pursue meeting their children for the very first time.

The day it all changed for Rhi
In this “slice of life” installment in the story of the Dragon Kings, we learn about the event that changed Con, Rhi & Erith. We finally know what happened to each of these beloved characters when Con had Darius tell Rhi is was over.
We always knew how devastated Rhi was when her relationship with Con ended. Now we know what happened to her when she walked through that Fae doorway. We also get little clues about Rhi’s connection to the Fae realm that just grows over time. We knew she was badly hurt, but not how she got hurt or how bad it really was. What we finally learn is how devastating breaking up with Rhi was for Con. The little cracks in his impeccable armor started when he had to push away the love of his life for the sake of his brethren. Many of us guessed Con was the one to find Rhi and now we know he had help in finding her. That help came from Erith who loved them both without either of them knowing that. We knew she took the twins but we learn why she had to keep them from their parents.
Donna Grant has created a vivid world for her readers. She has been kind enough to give us these insights into these complex characters whose storylines intertwined long before we realized. This tale does not further the storyline so some people might not think it is necessary, but when readers have loved characters for so long, we want more details about the how & why the characters are the way they are. As always, Donna Grant took us on an emotional ride and I am looking forward to what happened next.

Avid readers of the Dark Kings series have been begging for more of what came “before” regarding the storylines of Conn, Rhi and Death and Donna Grant does not disappoint.

I can only imagine how difficult it would be to take a rich tapestry - such as this beloved series - and go back to insert more color around established storylines. Donna Grant did a solid job pulling the threads together. It’s more challenging to write a review of this book because you must keep in mind, this series is many, many books long. And as in every grand tale, some details are more important than others to keep the story intact and the characters true to who they are. For this reader, the integrity of the characters and overall storyline was much more important than making sure every single detail was matched element for element. I have little patience for nitpicking.

I appreciate it very much that Donna wrote what the characters would have her write. In my mind’s eye, I’m picturing Conn, Rhi & Death sitting down with Donna and telling her what they recall about certain events. To me, THIS is the backbone of OFAF… to share with readers the details we didn’t know and to prepare us for what is coming next. Because sometimes, in order to understand where you are going, you need to reconsider where you have been.

I am very much looking forward to what comes next. Thanks Donna!

I am extremely grateful we have been given this novella to read. To have it in a small book form instead of just a flashback in one of the other novels really was great. I liked getting the perspective from the 3 people who were involved in the break up and it definitely answered some questions. I could feel Rhi's sorrow and heartache from page one and I could feel Con's urgency in saving her from what had happened to her. Most of all, Erith completely redeemed herself in my eyes. I had so many mixed emotions after reading about her part in Inferno and to see what really happened and why she did what she did made things easier to handle. This was the one scene that I had always wanted and Donna delivered us a great explanation and experience. There were a couple timeline instances that made me take pause but overall I was still able to fully enjoy the novella. To get some answers made it all worth it. Also, Donna chose the best time to release this book. My emotions were invested 100% more than if we had gotten it as just another prequel to a series. By putting it at the end of the series I could feel their heartbreak so much more and it also segued us into the new series by leaving us curious as to the decisions made by future characters at the end of Of Fire and Flame. I am excited to embark into the next journey of the Dragon Kings.

OF FIRE AND FLAME is a prequel novella in Donna Grant’s DARK KINGS paranormal/fantasy romance series focusing on the Dragon Kings and the women they love. OF FIRE AND FLAME is a short story that reveals some of the history between Constantine, King of the Dragon Kings, his mate and Light Fae Rhiannon, and Erith aka Death.

SOME BACKGROUND: The DARK KINGS is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland, including the latest spin off about the Fae executioners known as the REAPERS.

Told from three third person perspectives (Con, Rhi and Death) OF FIRE AND FLAME is a quick read; a short story that focuses on the emotional heart break of Con and Rhi’s break up in the face of Con’s need to protect the dragons he rules. As Rhi struggles to find a place in the world, a trip to Fae finds Rhi battling for her life, a life that is about to change for all eternity. Meanwhile, Death must face a loss of her own, banning a fellow Reaper in the face of betrayal but as Rhi’s life hangs in the balance, Death takes responsibility for the lives of two young souls.

OF FIRE AND FLAME is a revealing, heart breaking and emotional short story of turmoil, sacrifice , desolation and grief.

I’ve been reading this entire series and I love every single one. However, things end up getting twisted or skewed along the way. (Donna has mentioned she doesn’t plot her books and maybe that’s why) From the very beginning, I’ve always said it had to be a big enough reason for Con to break things off and to add salt to the wound not do it himself. I’m sorry but in my opinion it’s not enough. I understand his reasoning but they could have worked it out. Another concern I have is that throughout the series it was mentioned that the fae door she went into was one that no one ventured into, to go inside is certain death. Obviously, that wasn’t the case. Yes, she was harmed but I feel like it had to be written that way. Rhi even said fae come and go all the time. I think it would have made more sense if it was a completely different realm. Things just don’t add up. Those are my thoughts anyways.

Other than that, I think this is a great addition to the series. I loved reading each POV. You’ll have to overlook some mistakes though. I hope we get more like this in the future but maybe ones that help connect the missing pieces regarding the Kings mates. So many questions still remain that I hope get answered.

This novella gives us the opportunity to go back and see what we knew had happened. This book is broken up into 3 parts. In each section we are given the true and raw emotion of Rhiannon, Constantine and Erith, and what they endured.

First, we see the break up of Con and Rhi. That message was carried by Darius, “It’s Over”. This quick and short message shattered her heart. We then get a glimpse into how Rhi handles her loss.

That brings us to Con. We see his inner struggle with whether he did the right thing. To handle his distress and guilt, he shifts in to his dragon to fly, then sleep to try to ease his mind.

The third story is Erith, who we know as Death. Her part is crucial in not only saving Rhi, but also to save the children she is carrying, unbeknownst to both Rhi and Con.

This book was a heart clencher, you could almost feel their grief. It was a necessary book to experience their break up and how that formed them into who they are when they finally got back together. The only part I found distressful was the babies, and why as infants that were not much more than conceived, can they refuse to be back in the mother. That really needs to be expanded on!

Anyway I loved the book, it was a great quick read.

Review originally posted at Rantings of a Reading Addict

In Of Fire and Flame, we go back to the beginning of Rhi & Con's relationship. We also get to see what happened to Rhi when Erith finds her.

I was terribly heartbroken for Con & Rhi throughout the book. Con, despite knowing his reasons, had me wanting to yell at him. They suffered so much just to protect the Kings. I still get a knot in my stomach remembering the heartbreak.

One thing did stick out. Something that is said in of the Reaper novels contradicts Erith's part in what happens to Rhi. I read this before I read the Reapers, but when I got to that part, I was like, hey, wait a minute, that's not true. I'm not sure if this is because they really are two separate series and it may have gone unnoticed, but the part Erith plays in Of Fire and Flame makes this a blaring contradiction.

Besides that, I was really interested in learning the story behind one of the biggest relationships in the whole series. If you followed this series, I would highly suggest you grab this novella. It answers a lot of questions.

Rhi, Con & Erith ... non-stop emotions

From beginning to end Donna Grant has ensure that OF FIRE AND FLAME will pull on every emotion possible. I just didn’t know how much pure sadness my heart could cope with. I have always wanted to know exactly what transpired when Con and Rhi separated, and Donna has answered every question superbly.

“Con was her best friend, her love, her... everything. ... And her heart ... was gone.”
“She was the balm to his soul, the other half of his heart. She balanced him in a way that no one else could. She was, to put it simply, everything to him.”

OF FIRE AND FLAME is such an intense novella. Telling of the deep pain and anguish Rhi, Con and Erith suffered over situations they faced. Yes, there may have been a couple of minor inconsistencies in Erith's section, however I don't feel that they took anything away from the overall story that I have grown to deeply love. Donna's writing still traps me in her story and allows me to escape reality for a while. Her words and imagery are pure magic.

Having adored Rhi, Con and Erith since the very first time I was introduced to them. This novella ensured that I had an even greater understanding of their thoughts and emotions during times that would greatly affect them. Erith's section has me waiting impatiently for the twins' stories. Another wonderful read from Donna Grant.

I highly recommend this short read, its a page turner, and I could not put it down. I wanted to learn more about what has happened behind the scenes....

Heart wrenching to read about the pain both characters experienced and the choices Erith has had to make. Donna Grant is such an amazing writer the reader feels and experience's the same pain. This short read these characters experience so many emotions grief, resentment, pain, heartache, revenge, loneliness, love, loss and so many more.
This is such a great read, it is an eye opener into these amazing characters and help the avid reader understand what has helped transpired these actions and choices they made.

This book gives the In-depth look into the emotions, heartache, the pain both Rhi and Con went through when Con broke up their relationship. Rhi was confused cause she was never given a reason why he broke it off. Con felt guilty that he had to send someone else to break off their relationship, he knew he could not go through with it if he tried to tell Rhi.
This short read also gave the reader an idea of what Erith went through and why she made the decisions she had made.

This is a very short book, and it deals with three of the characters from Donna Grant’s Dark World series of books: Rhiannon-who is a light Fae; Constantine-a Dragon King who is King of Golds and King of Dragon Kings; and Death -also known as Erith, a woman who appears to be a goddess. The story gives a little history of their character, and how and why their interactions are important to the overall series. If you are a fan of Donna Grant’s series (which is many books-over 55 total in 4 different series) you will enjoy reading this explanation of events that are still influencing this ongoing series. Series referenced are Dark Sword, Dark Warriors, Dark Kings, and Reapers; new series continuing on with new characters from the Dark Kings books will be the Dragon Kings series. If you are a new reader, this is not the book to start with, but if you’ve read most, or all of the series, this book will fill in some of the holes that were intentionally left blank. An interesting read, and I always enjoy learning more about 3 of the most important recurring characters. I received an ARC of this book from the author, and this is my honest opinion.

The answers that we've all been waiting for are here. What happened that fateful day? Three points of view. Each heartbreaking in their telling. And a determination - one to move on and forget, one to remember and hope that love will find it's way back, one to cherish what is held with a promise to love.

What you need to know: This is NOT a stand alone. This is what long time readers of Ms. Grants books have longed for - an answer as to what happened that day. It is told from three different points of view. I won't spoil anything, but if you've read the Dark King and the Reaper books, then you need to add this to your collection.

Some have said that there are inconsistencies in the story lines. Yes, this is true. But did you bother reading the "Dear Readers" before the story? Ms. Grant is aware of that and said that in over 60 books written, it'll happen!

I've also seen where someone said that it didn't add to the story arc. I feel that it does. It gives us answers as to what happened. It gives more depth to the story that I hope will bring resolutions in the Dragon King spin off series.

Of Fire and Flame is a novella in the Dark Kings series which gives longtime readers a bit of insight into the breakup of the epic love story between the King of Dragon Kings Constantine and his Fae mate/queen Rhiannon. Told from three points of view, Con, Rhi, and Death; readers are given a new perspective on the breakup of the couple which took place eons ago.

I easily devoured this novella in one sitting. Con and Rhi have always been my favorite couple and I simply cannot get enough of their story. Although devotees of the series may be able to find some minor inconsistencies in the tale, this does not take away from the heart wrenching storyline. It was fascinating to see the breakup from both Con and Rhi's perspective. Although the story is tragic, readers know that the couple have since happily reunited and emerged stronger than ever from their time apart.

The book also gives readers answers to many of the lingering questions about Rhi and Con's twin babies. The fate of the children will no doubt be of primary focus in Grant's upcoming series, and this reader is very much looking forward to their story.
