She never thought she’d love again... In her late 50s and having lived in Tenerife for over 15 years, there’s not much on the island that can surprise widowed Elspeth. Until her hotelier friend asks her to put up a guest after they’ve overbooked – and handsome Charles is suddenly staying in very close quarters.
Long buried emotions are coming back to life.
Devastated by the death of her husband four years ago, Elspeth isn’t open to new romance. Yet something about Charles pulls her in, and they grow closer together. But Charles’ holiday is drawing to a close, and Elspeth needs to decide what she really wants – and how to get it.
The perfect holiday romance for fans of Holly Martin, Sue Moorcroft and Mandy Baggot.
Lilac lives on a Welsh hillside with her very patient husband and incredibly sweet dog, where she grows veggies (if the slugs don't get them), bakes (badly) and loves making things out of glitter and glue (a mess, usually).
She's been an avid reader ever since she got her hands on a copy of Noddy Goes to Toytown when she was five, and she once tried to read everything in her local library starting with A and working her way through the alphabet.
She loves long, hot summer days in the garden, and cold winter ones snuggled in front of the fire, but whatever the weather she's usually writing, or thinking about writing, with heartwarming romance and happy-ever-afters always on her mind.
I really am loving this Island Romance series from Lilac Mills. Each book is a standalone completely unrelated to the others, with the exception of the setting, they all so far are set in Tenerife. And amazingly all in small remote parts of the Island that the average tourist probably hasn't visited.
And it's always refreshing to read a book featuring slightly older than the average age of rom com main characters, proving once again that new love can strike you no matter your age.
Elspeth has been widowed for 4 years and still talks to Ray regularly. She has no desire to move on, and believes she is happy as she is. But when she does a favour for her friends and takes in Charles after a hotel overbooking, just for a few days, little does she know just how much her world is going to change.
It was so sweet seeing Elspeth's reactions to Charles and the re-awakening of long dormant feelings. I also loved the various walks and hikes they went on together, partly just as I'm impressed how fit they both are at their age (I know I wouldn't be able to do half of what they did),
I love how through this book you get to see a different side to life in Tenerife, to the typical expat stomping grounds, and I can't help but think that this story will do wonders for tourism in Tenerife for those wanting more of an active walking / cycling holiday. Well once real life travel is safe again, in the mean time it was fabulous to read some armchair travel.
It's gentle, its touching and its just a simply lovely romance, with a wonderful setting that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Thank you to Canelo and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily,
I enjoy reading Lilac Mills books. They have a minimal amount of drama and always have a hea. The descriptions of the little town of Santiago del Teide sound so refreshing. April would be the perfect month to visit with the sun coming up over the inactive volcano, light rain and year-round greenery giving way to an abundance of flowers. Elspeth Evans is a middle-aged woman, widowed four years. She misses her husband so much. They were everything to each other and it's still hard to believe he's gone. She occasionally rents a few rooms to make ends meet. She meets Charles Brown; her first male to rent a room since her husband has passed and does it ever feel strange to have another male in her home that's not her husband. After her arrives he seems like a nice, presentable and polite gent. As they talk and get to know each other she recommends things to do, like hiking on the beautiful trails. A misunderstanding gets her going along as a tour guide and they have a genuinely good and fun time and conversation. Though she's not ready to meet and mingle she has started noticing how good looking he is and enjoying his company. He's a divorced father of 2 grown daughters. They breakfast together and genuinely enjoy each other's company. When it's time for him to leave will this friendship be swept away in the tides or will the island and her have a magnetic pull on him making him return? The author writes a fun and realistic book from the heart. Family relationships are important, and the characters draw you in to care about them.
Pub Date 25 Feb 2021 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Still raw and fresh from the death of her husband four years ago, Elspeth is not interested in love until Charles walks into her life and is asked to put him up for 3 nights as his hotel has overbooked.
Elspeth's life is in Tenerife but torn to move back to the UK, will she make the right choice?
I love the warmth and joy Lilac brings to her books a fantastic Author which I always find a pleasure to read.
This is the perfect escapism read you can feel that sunshine on your face, highly recommended.
Found this a bit slow considering the second book in the series was quite an emotional rollercoaster. still a nice summer read just wanted a bit more intensity.
This was slightly disappointing when comparing it to the first two books in the series. It was somewhat of a slower pace and slightly predictable. Even though it is set in a beautiful setting, and you could really feel the sun on your face while reading (even though it’s a freezing February day here in the UK), I just couldn’t quite get on board with the characters or the storyline. Elspeth was obsessed with her age, even though we don’t at any point find out what that age is, other than her not being sixty yet. Sometimes she came across young and others times; I would have said she was at least eighty! It had too much of an emphasis and ruined the story of her finding love after heartache. The story was beautifully written about her past and loss, and you really did feel all the ups and downs. However, even though that side was perfect, the story as a whole was lacking. As soon as Elspeth gets the call from Amanda, you know what the outcome is going to be. As soon as Stefan makes a decision, you knew how each of the characters would react and what the answer was. There were no surprises and nothing to keep you hooked. For a short book of only 250 pages, it didn’t move at a quick enough pace for my liking. Even though it was appropriate to the character’s personalities, too much time was spent wandering up and down hills, gorges and mountains. I don’t pick up these lighthearted books to get a tourist information guide on a country. The author has always managed to find the right balance between exploring Tenerife and keeping it lighthearted in the past. However, this book missed the mark and wasn’t quite right for me. So, an unsatisfying third book of this series.

Oh what a lovely book!!!! The more i read book by Lilac Mills the more I love them!!! This one is really good!!! It's such a nice change to follow main characters who are into their 50s, and the fact that the story takes place in beautiful Tenerife is a huge bonus! This book is all about taking chances when you are in your 50/60s, and it shows that your life is not finished whatever your age. I really enjoyed "Sunset on the Square" and I can only recommend it!!!!
I thought this book was good, but I unfortunately am not the right audience. I am a younger adult who hasnt been married. I think because of that i had a harder time relating to the story. I do not believe it was a bad book at all and I strongly believe that in 15-20 years, i will enjoy this book immensely more.
I really enjoyed his book, so much so I read it in one sitting! I love a holiday romance type book especially in winter when you're snuggled up under your duvet trying to keep warm, whilst the characters you read about are enjoying basking in the sun or frolicking in the sea. I am transported on holiday with them.
The book is set in Tenerife where our main character Elspeth lives, widowed four years earlier she is trying to live her life without the presence of her much loved Husband Ray, and thinks she is doing a really good job of it until she has an unexpected house guest. She is instantly attracted to Charles and he reminds her in certain way of her husband, which in turn makes her happy, sad and feeling like she is betraying him all at the same time. Spending her time with her close friends, working part time and walking around this beautiful island, keeps Elspeth busy she realises that she is still young and has lots left to give and plenty life ahead of her.
There is so much I liked abut the book, the amazing scenery painted beautifully by the author, she chose a quite part of the Island full of breathtaking vistas and rugged scenery. Having visited myself a few times, it brought back wonderful memories of my times there with my husband. I also love that this is a second chance at romance for a couple who are in their 50's and 60's just showing you friendship, contentment and love can come to you at any time. It was lovely to see the characters come alive again by falling in love with each other.
Lilac Mills (love the name) is a new to me author but I will definitely be checking out the other books in her collection. I enjoyed this one so much.
Thanks to NetGalley, Canelo Publishing for giving me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review - Publication Date: 25 Feb 2021
My rating scale ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Absolutely loved it! Gave me a warm fuzzy feeling or made me cry. And took me on an emotional rollercoaster. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Really liked it. Will read more by the author and other books in the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - It was just okay, didn’t move me, but don’t feel like I wasted me time reading it either. ⭐️⭐️ - Didn’t like this book and probably won’t read other in the series. ⭐️ - I did not care for this book at all and feel like I wasted my time reading it
The third book of the island series by Lilac Mills though the characters and the plot line are different. Each book is a standalone but nonetheless, truth to say, I have gotten addicted to these island series!
Elspeth is a widow mourning at the loss of her husband Ray. Every morning, before going to work, she would talk to her husband, whose ashes are buried under the orchid tree. Then her life changes when her friends, Amanda and Toni asks Elspeth to provide lodging to a British traveler named Charles Brown and Elspeth realizes she feels dizzy when she is around him...
Just like the previous book I have read from the island series, this book was really good!!! Warm, funny at some parts, I do really like Elspeth as a character--her character is so well written and also I really wanted her to fall in love again!!! While reading the book, I really felt as if I was on holiday in a Spanish island as author used realistic descriptions to make the reader feel like they are on holiday with Elspeth and Charles! The writing was really great and I got drawn into the story. Elspeth is actually a very likable character and so does Charles. And the ending? It was really sweet and heartwarming ending!
Overall, this book is a heartwarming love story and is actually perfect for someone who is looking for a summer read! Worth five stars! I hope there will be a fourth book soon!!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for granting me the ARC of this book. This review is based on my honest opinion.
After absolutely devoured the first two books in this series I have been so excited to read this one and as always I loved it, Lilac’s books never fail to amaze or impress me and this one was no different! Not only was it set in sunny Tenerife it also had one of my favourite tropes (holiday romance) and whole concept was so beautiful especially with Charles & Elspeth being outside of the stereotypical main character age range it added another level of charm to the read 🥰
The connection between Charles & Elspeth was so wholesome I couldn’t get enough of them once they started to really fall for each other - their whole relationship was like being inside a romantic comedy, the way that Charles’ humour always made Elspeth laugh even when she didn’t expect it was the best it truly felt like I was watching my parents fall in love and it was adorable. My favourite scene out of the whole book at to be either the very last scene or the scene at the top of Mount Teide they were soooo romantic it literally made me swoon 🤭🫠
Overall, this book was incredible as I expected, I am so sad that this series came to an end but I am also very happy with the fact that Elspeth & Charles’ story was left for last as their story felt like the cherry on top to the three beautiful stories of love on the phenomenal island of Tenerife (which I now need to visit as soon as possible so that I can hike up mount teide just as these two did! I cannot wait to continue my Lilac reading journey - 14 down 4 to go 🥰
🌺Crossroads for widow Elspeth: great setting, lovely late-blooming romance🌄
I really fell in love with Charlie Brown, the unexpected 60-something lodger who rocks into Elspeth's quiet life of routine on the Canary Island of Tenerife. This later in life romance delves into some serious issues, describing a mature woman who's been hanging on to the past and short-changing her present until Charlie's visit shakes something loose. The dilemmas she faces, particularly related to her grown son and his family, are very realistic and I liked the way Elspeth goes about making critical decisions on her future that will impact others.
The setting is an important supporting character in Elspeth's story. Author Lilac Mills obviously adores the location and has Elspeth introducing Charlie (and the reader) to the terrific sights around Tenerife. She waxes lyrical about the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, the mountains, valleys, coasts and star-filled skies and made me want to be there with the characters.
A bit travelogue with relatable characters and a lovely, sweet second chance romance for a mature couple, Sunset on the Square was a sunny treat of a story. This is an author I will seek out again.
Thanks to publishers Canelo and NetGalley for providing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
It is my first Lilac Mills book, if I am not mistaken there are others with the same romance-vacation theme. . At first, I was amused to hear Espelth's voice, her ideas and insights into single life after many years, after having lived a full life with her husband and son. It shows a side that I didn't understand before about loneliness, and the loss of a husband. At first it was good, but as things progressed it became a bit tedious, right in the middle, but on the last chapters it picks up the good tempo. The central conflict appears and gives new life to the book. . Espelth has to decide what is the most important thing in her life and when one has lived her life in function or accompanying others this task is very complicated. . It is a tender, soft book with a romance that takes place in the best settings in Tenerife. It's one of those books that take you on sensory trips and leave you googling landscapes. . I believe that many people can feel attracted and immersed in the conflicts that a woman of more than fifty years goes through, is kind of life meaning and heart warmer book . Thanks to #NetGalley and Canelo Publishing to let me read and apreciate #SunsetontheSquare that will be published the next 25 Feb. 2021
My traveling these days is like everyone else’s through books and TV programs but after reading Sunset on the Square by Lilac Mills Tenerife is now on my travel bucket list. This is because being a wonderful romance story it is also a wonderful wish I-could-be-there books with its clear but amazing descriptions. Even before I had finished the book I had to go online to check this Canary Island out.
One of the reasons I so enjoyed this story is the fact that the main characters are older. I have no problem with younger main characters but life is not over when a spouse dies. Another reason is because Elspeth was not actively looking to replace her late husband. She was content in her life fort he most part but a change up comes as she helps her hotelier friends.
Funny and poignant, Lilac Mills writes a wonderful different type of romance as it sneaks up on Elspeth and Charles, then blossoms fully. Of course, they are hesitations and bumps along the way. The conclusion is sweet with the happily-ever-after that every couple deserves..
An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I want to thank the author and Netgalley for gifting me the ebook. I enjoyed this book so much! It is just laid back and an easy read. If you are looking for a cute romance story for someone who is in their 50's-60's this is your book. I am use to reading love stories for younger characters and I have to say I found this refreshing. The main characters are very likable. The author's writing is really great and I felt like I was really there. I enjoyed going through the feelings with the main female character and how she started falling in love with a man and all the while she was so distraught on how her husband who passed away years later might have felt. I love a book that messes with my emotions like this and I found myself crying and laughing along with the main character. I could not ever imagine loosing my husband and trying to get on with life. It just goes to show that you can find love any stage of life! Thank you for this really great story.
This is the first book I've read by this author and I loved it.
Part of the Island Romance series, which have all so far been set on the Island of Tenerife, its a standalone, and features a couple of more mature main characters, which makes a nice change.
Elspeth is in her late 50's, and has been widowed for 4 years, and she is pretty certain she isn't going to be looking for love anytime soon, infact she still talks to her late husband Ray.
After a mix up with overbookings, her hotelier friend asks Elspeth if she would mind taking in a guest, just for a couple of nights to help out. Little does Elspeth realise how much her world not to mention her feelings are about to change, as she gets to know, Charles better.
Another thing about this book I really liked, was that it featured some of the lesser known parts of Tenerife, that your average tourist would definitely not be familiar with.
I always enjoy reading stories that feature older characters, women more my own age, and I found this book to be a light, romantic but realistic read.
Elspeth has been widowed for four long years but she still talks to her husband every day. She is happy in Tenerife; she has friends who are supportive, a job she enjoys and the sun on her skin. There are also the incredible walks that she likes to take, Elspeth is no doddery old woman!
A friend asks her to take a lodger for several days due to a mix-up in a booking and she finds herself saddled with Charles. She is so conflicted about him, it is rather sweet to see. He seems lovely and they get on well, but that doesn't have to mean a thing, right?
Great story and even though I have never been to Tenerife, I could just about visualise myself there.
I found this a very refreshing take on your usual romance style novel, set in beautiful Tenerife we meet Elspeth who is in her late 50s. Four years have passed after the death of her husband when she puts up a guest (Charles) from her good friends local hotel where there has been a booking mistake. Soon the sparks begin to fly and Elspeth finds herself feeling things that at first she is very unsure of and shocked by. Alongside the romantic aspects of the book there are other relationships to enjoy, including between her friends, boss and her son who lives in Japan. Overall this was a super quick and enjoyable read, and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
It's been four very long years and yet Elspeth hasn't stopped talking to her husband Ray who is deceased. She's living in Tenerife and has good friends but she hasn't really moved forward. Then, when there's a hotel snafu, she's asked to host Charles, who is on holiday. Suddenly, she finds herself beginning to spark a bit but she's got a lot to think about . It this a legit relationship? He's going home eventually. Sigh. I liked this in part because it features mature characters AND because of the setting. Mills makes good use of the latter (I soooo wish we could travel). She never makes fun of her characters or light of Elspeth's loneliness. You know how this might end, don't you? Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A light fun read.
I was disappointed with this as have enjoyed the others in the series (which are not linked in any way that I can remember).
I thought it was predictable throughout, nothing surprised me and the main character Elspeth was very hard to warm to. Yes, she was bereaved but I found her irritating and how many times did she refer to her age (at my age, at our time in life etc)? I actually went back to check as the way she went on I thought she must be in her 70s because of the way she kept writing herself and Charles off, but was in fact only 58!!
I know people do sometimes fall in love in three days but this just didn't gel with me. Elspeth dreading the two weeks running out felt like months and how on earth she didn't work out that Charles was buying the shop I have no idea.

In her late fifties and having lived in Tenerife for over 15 years, there’s not much on the island that can surprise widowed Elspeth . Until her hotelier friend asks her to put up a guest after they’ve overbooked . Soon , handsome Charles is suddenly staying in very close quarters .
Elspeth isn’t open to new romance after being devastated by the death of her husband four years ago.But something about Charles pulls her in and long - forgotten feelings are coming back to life . With Charle’s holiday drawing to a close , Elspeth needs to decide what she really wants - is she strong enough to risk breaking her heart again?
This is part of the Island Romance series of books. They are all set in Tenerife, with English protagonists, but they are all standalone books. The books are all set in parts of Tenerife which are quieter and less touristy places. Lilac Mills makes Tenerife sound very appealing and it is a great escapism read. This book features Elspeth, a Widow of four years. She is in her late 50s which is refreshing to read about, as most female protagonists are usually a lot younger. I found this book very easy to read, the writing flows smoothly. This is a lovely easygoing and feel-good read, perfect and uncomplicated for relaxing with. Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.
Unexpected Love Later in Life This is a warm and realistic look at finding new love later in life. Many of us have gone through this new birth brought about by finding new love, new life, and new purpose later in life. After going through the loss of her husband, our heroine rebuilds her life around her job and friends. She does not see her loneliness until she meets the most intriguing man. This is a lovely story that many will be able to relate to. It takes the reader through a variety of emotions and will leave you with a smile on your face and in your heart. I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.
This was a digital arc from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This was the second book I've read by this author and it did not disappoint. It had great characters and a really good storyline, not usually addressed in books that I've come across before. This is the story of two older people whose paths meet and their developing friendship. It is also a story of the mental turmoil that a person goes through when they have been widowed and begin to have feelings for another person. It deals with the feelings of guilt surrounding that and follows the decision that Elspeth eventually comes to. A really good read which I would recommend!
Thank you NetGalley, Lilac Mills and Canelo for the ARC of Sunset on the Square. This is my personal review. This was such a refreshing romance book to read. Elspeth is in her late 50’s and several years have passed since she lost her husband. She has a wonderful family and friends in her life and she is happy in her life in Tenerife. She is always there to help whenever and whoever needs her help. Helping leads her to find new love in her life. This is a calm sweet romance that felt good to read.
I think this is the first book I've read by this author but I would like to read more of them. A lovely story about love the second time around after a long marriage and bereavement. Set in Tenerife but away from the bright lights and holidaymakers . I loved the description of the Island and what it was like to live there. I have been to the top of Mount Tiede before you had to apply for a pass to get there so I loved reliving my memories again through Elspeth and Charle's trip there. A really enjoyable story.
As much as I adore lilac mills this book was a bit of a let down. while I did enjoy the story I found that I wasn’t captivated by it and that from the start I could see where it was going. Personally it was just a bit too predictable. Additionally the pace really threw me off, the beginning took forever to get through but then the end was so rushed. On a positive note though mills’ writing is so detailed and transportive. This series is set on the Canary Islands and is perfect if you’re looking for a getaway series.
I really enjoyed this book it was nice to read about an older couple rather than some 20 something ....... the characters were well written and had depth, there was no “padding” the story flowed and I was caught in that circle of wanting to finish to see what happened and wanting to slow down to savour the story ...... pity it’s winter as I could imagine reading this book In the garden with a nice glass of wine ..... grab a hot chocolate and curl up beside the fire instead
I didn't want this story to end, and wondered (sighed, actually *wink*) afterwards if life cannot have more of these happy endings...
And will you believe that when reading a romance novel not long ago, I indeed wondered if the senior characters in the book might be the main characters in a novel... Their age doesn't disqualify them for being so! Happy with Lilac Mills thinking likewise.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
This was a rather sweet romance where the main character is a woman in her late fifties. The book was a bit slow in the beginning, but it ended up being a lovely escape novel. I think women in their fifties don't often expect to find love again after the death of a beloved partner, but Elspeth discovers there is a whole new future for her.
