My parents are alive. So why have they avoided me for 20 years? And why am I different from other electromagicians? I've searched off and on for years, but now I won't stop until I get the answers I need. If that means I have to team up with the one man I despise most in the entire world, then so be it. I just hope I can find them before Torden figures out a way to take my powers and kill me. No risk, no reward, right? Then why do I feel like I don't want to hear what they have to say? Probably because it might drag me into the middle of a war I don't understand.

Keith Soares is an independent American speculative fiction author who has a potentially unhealthy obsession with Godzilla, so it’s no coincidence that kaiju have made it into some of his stories. His favorite question to ask when writing is, “How would I respond if that really happened, right now?” If he saw a raving, bloodthirsty shamble, he’d call it a zombie. If he suddenly couldn’t be hurt by fire, he’d call that superpowers. If he could harness electricity at will, he’d call that magic.

More than anything, Keith writes stories about family, whether that means the parents that gave birth to you or the friends you’ve had for years. His characters are fiercely loyal, though they often feel like they aren’t up to the job of whatever disaster they’re living through. We all feel that way, sometimes.

Keith's novels include The Oasis of Filth, the John Black series (beginning with For I Could Lift My Finger and Black Out the Sun), the Lightning Hopkins series (beginning with Struck), and White Fire.

Lyn has reached her limit: she has travelled to Geneva to find her parents, to learn why they left her twenty years ago, disappeared and never made contact again. She needs to know how and why she is so different from other Electromagicians (EMs), what caused the ideological rift among EMs, and what she can do to avert the burgeoning threat of war between the factions, and regular humans as well.

Lyn figures that her extremely powerful arch-enemy, Torden Detonde, knows how to contact her parents. He gained his power level by killing fellow EMs to steal their power, and he has sworn to Lyn that he will take hers, too. Taking advantage of his imprisonment by the High Order, she kidnaps him and keeps him subdued with a magic Quell Node, while maneuvering him to meet her parents. Will Lyn be able to reconcile with her parents and get the answers she seeks? Will she be able to maintain control over Torden and get him back to High Order custody, or will she be just another notch on his belt?

This is another well-written story with a lot of action that drew me in and kept me turning pages to the end. I hope there are more stories in this series, and I highly recommend you grab a copy of “Struck”, the first book, and read right straight through – it's a fun trip!
