Such a letdown after the excellent first volume. All of the interesting character interplay between members of The Illuminati is gone, replaced by portents of gloom and doom that, at least in this volume, lead nowhere. We get it, something bad is coming. Get on with it, already!
And a personal pet peeve...Why does Marvel let Jonathan Hickman fill dozens of pages with white space, lists of the teams roster, strange glyphs, and characters speaking in a fucking code that you need to translate yourself? (They don't even TELL YOU THAT THERE IS A KEY TO THE CODE AT THE BACK OF THE BOOK, so that you could attempt to translate it when you actually need it. By the time I found it, I was half-past giving a shit.) There were easily two issues worth of space wasted on the aforementioned nonsense and blank pages....so stupid. I'm paying by the page here, Marvel!
Also: I hope that this is the "Superior" Spider-Man that is appearing in this book, otherwise Hickman has no clue how to write Peter Parker. If it IS Doc Ock in disguise, this is one of those times that a recap page, or the much-maligned caption box would come in VERY handy.
This is my spoiler free review of the first 2 volumes of hickman's avengers (Avengers 2012 issues 1-17 and New Avengers 1-7)
Jonathan Hickman is an author that I've never been able to get into, but by reading this book, I'm starting to see why people love him. Hickman's style is oriented to a grand sense of story telling. He does not write stories that can be wrapped up in single issues, but instead sprinkles in bits of story arcs that will be paid off way down the line. This means that in the short term, his books are confusing. You don't know why things are happening and nothing is explained or even seems relevant, but given time, the world building pays off in epic ways that have made me appreciate Hicman as an author.
The story itself revolves around the avengers deciding to plan create an emergency network of heroes to protect the world in case of emergency, and then fighting off an alien threat. Meanwhile, there is also the building blocks of a multiversal level threat that the Illuminati must prep for. (This is vague enough, but trying to avoid spoilers). The entire story continously builds on itself in a way that shows there is a great threat approaching. Hickman does a great job of world building and suspense creation.
Lastly, the art and paneling is done amazingly for this book. I'm excited to see where it goes and can't wait to read the finale in Secret Wars
Some great big superhero fun, occasionally poignant, with spectacularly rendered art throughout. This is all clearly leading somewhere crazy and I'm glad to be along for the ride.
Avengers 11: Avengers letí do kasína zjistit, o co jde AIMu. Každý člen zvolí trochu jiný přístup při sběru informací. Zábavná práce s postavami. Art TOP. 5/5
Avengers 12-13: Tahle linka nerozvíjí ani jeden z těch velkých rámců, co Hickman uplácal, ale Holly shit, HYPERIONOVA ŠKOLKA ZEBŘÍCH DĚTÍ a Bromance s Thorem je muj jam. 100/5
New Avengers 7: Wakanda se kočkuje s Atlantidou, Namor si povídá s T'challou, Reed a Stephen si povídají s Doomem a jeho divnosynem. Napětí mezi postavami je na spadnutí. 4/5
Avengers 14-17: AIM všechno zase posral. Ne, jeden systém Vnímající země rozbil Starbrand a druhý AIM, z představy, co by se dělo, kdyby lidi nechali Ex Nihilův vývoj dojet do konce, mě svědí mozek. 5/5
Suma sumárum Kniha začíná v kvalitě, kterou předchozí kniha končila a neklesá to.

Hickman's Avengers series has so far been an impressive large scale tale. Volume 2 continues the dual storylines of the Avengers and New Avengers and hints that the two may link together in the future. I personally prefer the New Avengers as there is a real sense of tenseness and fear. The theme of heroes struggling with whether the ends justify the means is a compelling one. The Avengers is big, bombastic and has huge potential, yet it still feels like it is in the setup stages so far. Though by the end of this book that seems to be about to change. If like me you're continuing your journey through this story, I don't think you'll be disappointed with volume 2.
I’m thoroughly enjoying this Hickman-led series and the way the overarching narrative continues to escalate. Just when I think the stakes can’t get any higher, Hickman proves me wrong. The writing is sharp, occasionally a bit dense, but always gripping, keeping me fully invested as the story twists and evolves. I also love seeing groups like AIM, the High Evolutionary, and other classic villains get meaningful moments that actually feel earned. Despite the massive cast, every character gets room to shine, making the book feel like a true ensemble rather than a story centered solely on the big three: Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man. I do wish we had Peter Parker as Spider-Man in this run instead of Otto Octavius, but I’m still glad he’s part of the narrative. The mystery woven throughout the universe keeps pulling me deeper in, and the artwork is nothing short of spectacular. Overall, this is a fantastic volume, and I highly recommend both it and the series as a whole. Grade: B+
This was really good, just wasn't as cohesive as the first one. A lot of fun side adventures and back stories of the characters - including some really touching moments between them.
Did pick up suspense and ramp up the action in the latter half, but I did miss having more of the Illuminati arc (there's only one issue included in this one vs the 6 in the last book).
This wasn't bad, but it definitely had the slow moving pacing that a lot of stories in general have when building up to a big event. Also the Illuminati were not as prevalent. Still a fun read but falls under the "slow build up to big event" issue.
A bit more aimless than the first volume, I don’t really feel like much happened There’s some great character moments in this one though. Love Hyperion from basically one issue, and I hope there’s more of this Thor moving forward. He’s really fun. Also that heist issue?? Excellent!
It makes me sad that this isn't really that good of a run outside of New Avengers. Everything else going on is too long and not really interesting enough to want to continue to follow the plot outside of knowing that it leads to Secret Wars.
It feels like Hickman is building towards something cool, but I thought the first volume was more interesting. Still really excited to see where this run goes!
