1001 Dark Nights Press is excited to present the winners of the 2020 short story challenge...

This year, we held a contest where romance authors could submit a short story to be included in a 1001 Dark Nights anthology, and we were blown away by the results. We received hundreds of entries, and while we wish we could include everyone, we’re thrilled to introduce you to these thirty-six incredible authors:

Fiona Archer ~ Louisa Bacio ~ Laura M. Baird ~ Kait Ballenger ~ Asa Maria Bradley ~ Eden Bradley ~ Boone Brux ~ C.G. Burnette ~ Cara Carnes ~ Caraway Carter ~ Sierra Cartwright ~ S.A. My Review

I read Zoey Ellis’s contribution it’s set in the beholden duet world.
It features King Allandis and princess Elyanna
and how they first met.
It was a short but very satisfying omegaverse read that had heat and no angst.
It was a quick but still very enjoyable foray into that world almost a glimpse behind the curtain if you will.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of A Royal Harmony.

A Royal Harmony by Zoey Ellis : ⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

I've been anxiously anticipating this anthology since I learned Zoey Ellis' origin story, A Royal Harmony, from her Beholden world (featured in A Savage Debt & A Tainted Claim) would be included. It didn't disappoint. The chemistry between the Alpha, Allandis, & Elyana was tangible. This is the only Omegaverse story in this anthology, but even if you haven't read Omegaverse yet, I think anybody who enjoys fantasy romance will enjoy this short story. Well-done, fairytalesque Omegaverse short stories are some of my favorites. Candescent: A Myth of Omega Standalone & Compulsion: A Myth of Omega Standalone by Zoey Ellis are some of my favorite Omegaverse short stories with a fairytale feel.

The rest of these authors are new to me :))

Assasin's Fate by Ella Sheridan : ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 stars

One of my favorite stories from this anthology! Um, the writing was good. When I read anthologies like this, I often skim stories and I only stick with a story if the prose is good and grabs me. This was the case with this story. It reminded me a bit of Trust Game by Kitty Thomas & was probably one of the darkest themed short stories in this collection. There was good storytelling here. It starts out with a woman drowning in a car, and you learn from her inner mono she's escaped from her abusive husband. She's rescued -- but the man who's rescued her isn't all that he seems. The sex was hot & I was cracking up that he was searching for the flash drive during foreplay, lol. I'm def reading the rest of this series. I think it's the Assassins Series by Ella Sheridan.

Forbidden by Eden Bradley : ⭐⭐⭐1/2 stars

Omg I loved the beginning of this short story so much!!!

I'm very picky & very hard on contemporary romance. I've never enjoyed rockstar cntmp romances before, but I liked this one???

So what made this one likable?

The H is a rockstar, but he's come back home for his best bud's wedding. There he meets his best friend's little sister again

I've never crushed on rock stars, but this guy was so down to earth, I fell in love with him. I would have rated it four stars, except this should have been a full length story with more time for their reconnection to occur & develop. The "kinky" dialogue was too cheesy for me too (Does this author know young guys? Young guys don't constantly think & say they're "kinky" over and over again fyi). Besides that this story was great, one of my favorites in this anthology. I may try more by this author.

A Dark Reaper Short Story by Boone Brux : ⭐⭐⭐ stars

A short story consisting of demons & reapers. I think it will appeal to PNR lovers who like reading about demons :))

The Crown of Wings and Thorns by Mary Ting : ⭐⭐⭐ stars

A good angel PNR story

Her Mafioso's Honor by Patricia D. Eddy : ⭐⭐⭐ stars

A good darkish mafia romance story. I don't typically read mafia romance, but I'll keep this author in mind if I'm ever in the mood.

Honorable mention to The Forbidden Fiancé by Zoe Hill . It was well-written, and I'll be keeping this author on my radar.

THE REVIEW FOR THE BOOK: THE CABIN BETWEEN US.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a short story included in the latest 1001 Dark Night Anthology...which have a number of amazing authors💋🔥🥰 @1001darknights_blueboxpress @danireneauthor

I have read a lot of books by 1001 Dark nights and I have never been disappointed by the collection of authors they provide us with.

Anthologies are a way to find new authors but also to just get a glimpse of your favorite authors latest work...and Dani Rene has done it again with her slow, angsty, emotionally Raw story of Calandra and Colton...they had a short story but in that time alone, I was emotionally attached with them and I hope we will be seeing more of them in the future.

The Cabin between us is a short story of a couple who were separated due to some issues but now have been granted a second chance in life.. whats left to see is if they will grab this opportunity or will it all go to waste?

Believe In Me by Sierra Cartwright

Part of the Hawkeye series, Brant had to leave Kara in the middle of the night and he didn't come back for a couple of months. Her heart hurt, she moved away thinking she would never see him again until he turns up in the coffee shop she's working in. This was a very quick, very short read as Brant tries to explain and make up to Kara why he had to leave and why he came back. Even though it was really short, there was a lot of emotion packed into the chapters. Will Kara forgive Brant and take him back or will she be the one to walk away this time?

Prince of Hearts by Caraway Carter

Oh my, what a delicious story, it’s tiny but o so worth reading! With delightful humor I loved.

Books are magic! In Grady’s little library lies a little gem.
Bam! Grady lies on the cobbles with a dog licking his face, Matthew’s dog it is. That’s the way he meets Matthew for the first time!
Their fate is sealed by an accidental kiss.

As I said, a delightful story, with accents on all kinds of little details made it all feel like one big story instead of a short one.

All those kisses, I loved them.
Excellently written story!

This book is full of short stories by fantastic authors some I knew before and some are new to me and I have fallen in love with. There are a lot of short stories and some I have not got to yet, but I definitely plan to, so here are my reviews on the stories I have read so far:
Her Mafioso’s Honor by Patricia Eddy:
In this story we are instantly introduced to Evelyn who has been captured by some mafia guys. She is treated horribly but she is strong and can hold her own. Damian is the nephew to the current mafia boss who thinks it is horrible the way his uncle has ran the family into the ground so he is out to right the wrongs and he starts by saving Evelyn from an even worse fate. At first Evelyn is very skeptical a guy like Damian wants to help her and cares for her well being but their attraction is undeniable. The story is a short one, but I loved it so much and enjoyed the characters. A fast paced intense read with an incredible alpha and tough as nails heroine.

Real by Magan Vernon:
In this cute read we get to see the banter between two individuals who entertained me and made me laugh. Wren is starting a paper for her English class and starts to email her professor so she can get a few things approved but the TA answers to response. This TA comes off as abrupt, kind of mean, but she does not know it is not her professor but instead his TA, Wolf the school bad boy. Wolf is smart and knows what he likes, and he knows his stuff when it comes to the class he works for. Their back and forth arguing is so good that you know they love to get a rise out of each other but know it may be kind of forbidden. I loved Wolf and the way he was straight forward with Wren. I also how Wren could give back as good as he could and that they were so attracted to each other just by arguing.

The Cabin Between Us by Dani Rene:
This story was cute, and it followed Calandra who left her hometown to try and make it in Hollywood, but we find out when she left town she left behind her heart. She is returning because her mother has decided to sell their cabin but she has so many memories there it’s hard for her to see it go, but when she gets home Kolton her heart and soul at one point is there. Kolton let the love of his life go but now he has a plan to make up for lost time.

A Royal Harmony by Zoey Ellis - omegaverse

My only complaint is that because the stories are so short, the second-chance romances (and they make up at least half of the anthology) don't allow for a believable redemption. I don't believe the guys who took off actually proved they are now going to do right by their ladies. In most cases, there wasn't adequate explanation of what happened. So they were ultimately unsatisfying.

However, reading all the different authors did allow me to see some authors I did want to read more of and the opposite as well.

I started with Kait Ballenger's One Night with the Cowboy Wolf. This short story takes part in her already awesome series Seven Range Shifters.

If you haven't started this series and you love awesome hero's, the Seven Range Shifters is a must read.

One Night with the Cowboy Wolf introduces the reader to Walker Maxwell and Anna Lee Adams. These two have a history, being a part of the Grey Wolf Pack in Wolf Pack Run. So for the readers of the series, the landscape is familiar. For the new reader, this story is enough of a teaser to make you want to pick up the first book and read through to catch up with all the action.

Walker and Anna Lee shared a night together years ago, but that's all it was, a one time hook up. Now Walker is back, but is it for good?
Jump into this quick story to find out, get yourself comfortable and grab the other books in this series, it's a sure thing.

Ballenger has created a world filled with awesome characters, seat of your pants suspense and out of this world heros. I've read all of this series and can't wait for the next book to come out to pick up where we've left off.

5 stars, each, for two of my favourite authors – Zoey Ellis and Cara Carnes

A ROYAL HARMONY by Zoey Ellis
What’s not to like about this short Omegaverse tale featuring a dominant Alpha king and a spirited Omega princess? One who’s certainly not interested in catching the king’s attention? How about some humour, feisty backtalk and unique, explicit acts – that only Alphas and Omegas can deliver? If that sounds good, then you’re sure to enjoy this entertaining and very steamy story.

EXIT WOUNDS by Cara Carnes
I’ve loved every one of Cara’s stories set in her paramilitary world of The Arsenal and this short story is no exception. There’s something about these men – the Masons, which goes beyond dedication and commitment. When Callista arrives seeking the kind of help that they excel at, there’s no hesitation. In addition to some military action, there’s some drama, humour, suspense and a sweet and steamy reunion in this entertaining story.

This is a short cute story that's meant to be part of an anthology, but also it gives us the origin story for the universe of the beholden duet. Since the story is incredibly short, it's relatively drama free, but the characters are still worth getting to know, and the story is sweet and fairy-tale like. I wouldn't say it's the typical book Zoey Ellis normally makes, but it's worth reading it.

When king Allandis summons everyone royal to pick a wife (or several), Elyana knows she's not going to be the one. In fact, the only reason she's going to the party is to appease her mother, except once she gets her all her plans fly out the window when the king talks directly to her. She's covered in dirt and doesn't know his native language, yet he can't seem to be able to take his eyes off of her. Maybe she's not meant to stay alone, maybe he can accept her for who she is. And maybe, they're more alike than they know.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

This is my review of Zoey Ellis' A Royal Harmony, an Omegaverse short story. This story features Allandis and Elyana, an Alpha and Omega that come into each other by mere fate. Allandis is the typical overbearing growling Alpha, brute and rough, and Elyana is unlike many of the other Omegas; she doesn't want to be noticed. Elyana wants to be lost in the sound of magic that is ever present in her world and in her gardens. When she meets Allandis, the new king, there is a surreal pull that neither can deny. She is shocked at what her body yearns for and he knows exactly who and what she is to him. Their connection is so visceral, you can feel the elevated pheromones through the pages. As is always in Zoey Ellis fashion, she creates a fantastic world, weaving in elements of magic and Omegaverse, culminating is a titillating tale that you just do not want to quit. I absolutely loved A Royal Harmony

What a marvelous compilation of authors and their short story romances. It's a great way to discover a new-to-you author or reconnect with a favorite. There are billionaires, shifters, a vampire, a reaper, demons, angels, a witch, a fortune teller, a virgin, an astronaut, an FBI agent, a rockstar, an assassin, a recalcitrant princess and a king. There are second chances romances, a bride with cold feet, best friends falling in love, a hostage rescue, a kidnapping, a prankster TV show, a fertility clinic mix up and more. You'll be marooned in a hurricane, get a whimsical new take on a fairytale, be stranded in a rainstorm, attend a masquerade, and speed date to name a few. Enjoy!

Her Mafioso's Honor by Patricia D. Eddy is the prequel to her new series debuting in 2021. Damian Furlan9 rescues Evelyn Mass from two of his uncle's henchmen. He cares for in the aftermath of her beatings and torture. He ten volunteers to help obtain the information she needs about her sister. Although he gains her trust, she chooses to walk away. Falling in love was not part of the plan.

I'm so out of touch lately, if it hadn't been for seeing a post on Facebook I would have totally missed these, that would have been a shame you know?
I don't know most of these Authors and honestly so far I've only been reading the ones I know, little bits of rewards for myself 😁
Fiona Archer gave us a great story with Kayla and Gabriel, they had a chance to make it right, would they take it? Was a good, fast read, maybe can nag for an expanded story at some point? 🤔
Also read Patricia Eddys story since she's never let me down in a read either! Didn't this time, was so good as well.
Guess I'll be randomly picking some more to read, here we go.....eenie, meenie, minie, moe....
I expect it will be an exciting adventure 😁

What an amazing anthology of authors I have read before and so many new to me authors. As I read through these quick shorts, you can really get a flavor of the author's styles of prose and a great escape for an afternoon. A few stories that stood out for me:

Marooned by A.D Justice - Sometimes it takes a life and death situation for someone to realize what is really important in life.
Crown of Wings and Thorns by Mary Ting - Mary Ting writes stories that pull me in and make me want so much more. I love angel stories.
Free to Wish by Tracey Jerald - This is a quick second chance story for Jenna from the Amaryllis series. Jenna's wish is long time in the making but an encounter brings her the HEA she always wanted.
The Cabin Between Us by Dani Rene - Another second chance story love story and the opportunity to reveal truths to heal hurts.

Thank you to the organizers for giving me the opportunity to find more authors to love.

This is my review for “A Royal Harmony” by Zoey Ellis. I received an ARC copy for my honest opinion.
I really enjoy reading stories written by Zoey Ellis and this one wasn’t the exception. It is very short but it doesńt lack an interesting plot, amusing characters, a strong and hot alpha and a funny awkward omega.
Elyana is an omega princess who lives in her own world and is convinced she will never find an alpha who understands her. She is taken by her mother to meet the new king hoping it will be over soon so she can go back to her interests. But you dońt always get what you expect. This was a such a great story to read, I hope it would be a little bit longer.

I was given Zoey Ellis’ story and can only review that until I read the others. What a perfect little Alpha/Omega tale. With Elyanna content to just lay in the garden and listen to all the magic it presents, she resents having to go to the castle to offer herself as a possible mate to the new king. I love that she arrived all muddied and didn’t care, in fact, hoping that he would be repulsed by her and leave her alone. But she didn’t realize who this man was and how he would affect her. I would love to have this story fleshed out to see how their magic would work in this world.
